The Rich Fool

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, How many of us have ever struggled with money problems? How many of us have ever known a family to be torn apart by money problems? If we are honest, we have all experienced money prob-lems at some point in our lives and we have known families that have fallen apart over money. (Maybe our own family fell apart because of money.) Today, people experience stress, anxiety and worry over money more than any other problem. Yet, we live in the United States with one of the highest standards of living and with one of the strongest economies in the world. Nevertheless, money tends to be the cause of divorces, family break-ups, and disputes after a loved one’s death. And why? One reason is because we spend more than we earn — not always out of necessity — but out of desire for more things. Today (in Luke 12) our Lord addresses what is at the heart of this problem with money, this prob-lem with wanting more than we can afford. Money is not evil. Money is necessary to live, for com-merce, for exchange. However, the love of money is what is at issue and the desire for excessive material objects. This is called greed (or avarice) and St. Paul says this vice is idolatry in the second reading from Colossians. In the gospel, a man asks Jesus to be the judge of a dispute between him and his brother. Our Lord knows that this man’s problem is not injustice but greed, and so He gives the “Parable of the Rich Fool” to demonstrate how dangerous greed can be. The man in the parable has been blessed by the Lord with a bountiful harvest. He thinks to Him-self, “What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?” Notice: He does not think about how he can assist those less fortunate; he does not think about those in his family; he does not think about how he can contribute to the synagogue; he only thinks of himself. So, he decides to build bigger barns to store his harvest so he never has to worry about anyone else but himself. Now, before we criticize this greedy man, let’s look into our own hearts. If my salary (or SS check) increased by $1,000, who would I think of first? Would I start to save to buy a new boat, a new car (or new rims for my wheels), a new gun, new clothes? Would our first thought really be “I should help the poor or the church or a woman in a crisis pregnancy”? Or even if we received an abundance of time: Would we really think to share it with the mission of the Church or would we just rest, eat, drink, be merry? If we are honest with ourselves, we can see ourselves as very similar to this greedy man. Even as a priest, I wish I could be more like St. John Vianney (whose feast is to-day), the patron saint of priests. He gave every extra nickel he had to build up his church, to care for orphans and widows, and provide for the poor. The challenge for us as Catholic Christians is this, especially in regard to money: Do we feel like we have to spend more when we earn more? If so, what are we spending our money on? Do we constantly spend money we do not have (piling up our credit card debt)? If we have an abundance of free time, do we spend most of our time resting and on hobbies? Why would we not think about sharing our time with God (in volunteer work) since He has given us all our days? Ultimately, we do not know if this night your life will be demanded of you. That is why we ought to stop thinking about storing up treasures for ourselves and start thinking about doing those things that are rich in what matters to God.

El rico Insensato Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: ¿Cuántos de nosotros hemos tenido problemas de dinero? ¿Cuántos de nosotros hemos conocido que una familia ha sido destrozada por problemas de dinero? Si somos honestos, todos en algún momento de nuestras vidas hemos tenido problemas de dinero y hemos conocido familias que se han desmoronado por el dinero. (Tal vez nuestra propia familia se desmoronó por el dinero). Hoy, las personas experimentan estrés, ansiedad y preocupación por el dinero más que cualquier otro problema. Sin embargo, vivimos en los Esta-dos Unidos con uno de los niveles de vida más altos y con una de las economías más fuertes del mundo. Sin embargo, el dinero tiende a ser causa de divorcios, rupturas familiares y disputas después de la muerte de un ser querido. ¿Y por qué? Una razón es porque gastamos más de lo que ganamos, no siempre por necesi-dad, sino por deseo de más cosas. Hoy (en Lucas 12) nuestro Señor aborda lo que está en el corazón de este problema con el dinero, este problema de querer más de lo que podemos pagar. El dinero no es malo. El dinero es necesario para vivir, para el comercio, para el intercambio. Sin embargo, el amor al dinero es lo que está en cuestión y el deseo de objetos materiales excesivos. Esto se llama codicia (o avaricia) y San Pablo dice que este vicio es idola-tría en la segunda lectura de Colosenses. En el evangelio, un hombre le pide a Jesús que sea el juez de una disputa entre él y su hermano. Nuestro Señor sabe que el problema de este hombre no es la injusticia sino la avaricia, y por eso da la "parábola del rico tonto" para demostrar cuán peligrosa puede ser la avaricia. El hombre de la parábola ha sido bendecido por el Señor con una cosecha abundante. Él piensa para sí mismo: "¿Qué debo hacer, porque no tengo espacio para almacenar mi cosecha?" Aviso: No piensa en có-mo puede ayudar a los menos afortunados; no piensa en los de su familia; no piensa en cómo puede contri-buir a la sinagoga; él solo piensa en sí mismo. Entonces, decide construir graneros más grandes para al-macenar su cosecha para que nunca tenga que preocuparse por nadie más que por sí mismo. Ahora, antes de criticar a este codicioso hombre, echemos un vistazo a nuestros propios corazones. Si mi salario (o cheque de la SS) aumentara en $1,000, ¿en quién pensaría primero? ¿Comenzaría a ahorrar para comprar un bote nuevo, un auto nuevo (o unos rines nuevos para mis llantas), una pistola nueva, ropa nue-va? ¿ Realmente sería nuestro primer pensamiento "debo ayudar a los pobres o la iglesia o una mujer en un embarazo en crisis"? O incluso si recibiéramos mucho tiempo: ¿Realmente pensaríamos en compartirlo con la misión de la Iglesia o simplemente descansaríamos, comeríamos, beberíamos, seríamos felices? Si so-mos honestos con nosotros mismos, podemos vernos parecidos a este hombre codicioso. Incluso como sa-cerdote, desearía ser más como San Juan Vianney (cuya fiesta es hoy), el santo patrón de los sacerdotes. Si tenemos mucho tiempo libre, ¿pasamos la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo descansando y en pasa-tiempos? ¿Por qué no pensaríamos en compartir nuestro tiempo con Dios (en trabajo voluntario) ya que Él nos ha dado todos nuestros días? En última instancia, no sabemos si esta noche se te exigirá tu vida. Es por eso que debemos dejar de pensar en almacenar tesoros para nosotros mismos y comenzar a pensar en ha-cer cosas que son ricas en lo que le importa a Dios.

The St. Philip Institute will be holding a Catechist Formation Day on August 17th from 9 am to 6 pm at Bishop TK Gorman and Sts. Peter and Paul Chapel for Mass following the training. Catechists, priests, deacons, DREs, and teachers are encouraged to attend. The cost is $10 which includes lunch. (Scholarships are available if needed.) The cut-off date to register is August 14th.
