Read the following passages and answer the questions that follow. Comprehension Passage 1 3m (Understanding + Application of knowledge ) WATER POLLUTION

People, and all living organisms, need food, water, and oxygen. Each must be clean and available for humans and other living things to survive. Unfortunately, water pollution throughout the world can be a problem for people and living organisms in need of safe drinking water. Water pollution is dirty, unsafe water and cannot be used for drinking. Though there is plenty of salt water in the oceans, the pollution causes problems for aquatic life living in the oceans of the world.

The water pollution occurs when different particles, chemicals, and other substances cause the water to become unsafe. Sometimes the pollutants flow directly into the water from a factory. It can also flow indirectly from rainwater mixed with farm chemicals, construction sites, or other places that release unsafe chemicals. All rainwater eventually seeps into the ground and then flows into rivers, lakes, or streams that may be the source for drinking water.

Sometimes water pollution can occur naturally, such as by volcanic activity, excessive algae, animal waste, and silt from storms and floods. Human causes include sewage,

pesticides and fertilizers from farms, chemicals, and trash from people littering. Water pollution can be sorted into several different types.

Nutrients pollution takes place due to excessive algae and plant growth when too many nutrients are released into the water. Wastewater, fertilizer, and sewage are the sources of the excessive nutrients. Surface water pollution occurs when unsafe substances reach the surfaces of the different bodies of water, and either dissolve in the water or remain on top of the surface of the water. It may include litter or other discharges in the water.

When decaying matter is released into the water, microorganisms grow and just like algae, they use up oxygen. Oxygen depletion is another type of water pollution. Groundwater pollution occurs when farmers, gardeners and others use chemicals to help their crops or plants grow, including grass. The excessive chemicals seep into the ground, causing the water underground to become polluted.

Other types of water pollution include microbiological, when people drink water directly from untreated rivers or streams, and the natural pollution causes illness to humans and to fish living in the water. Suspended matter are pollutants that do not dissolve in water, such as substances, particles, and chemicals that sink to the bottom and kill organisms living at the bottom of a body of water. Finally, oil pills may cause problems in the spill area and spread for many miles. Many fish die, and seabirds lose their ability to fly.

Regardless of the type of pollution, much of the human causes of pollution can be prevented. There are 14 billion pounds of mostly plastic garbage dumped into water every year, and in the U.S., 1.2 trillion gallons of sewage is dumped into water each year, and nearly 90% of wastewater flows untreated into lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. All can be reduced or prevented.

Some of the ways people can do their part in preventing water pollution is to reduce the amount of water used, such as taking shorter showers and using less water when brushing teeth or washing dishes. Disposing and recycling paints, oils, medicines, or chemicals properly, and not littering on the streets or in bodies of water. Planting more trees and flowers can lead to more rainwater being soaked up instead of mixing with chemicals from the area.

Over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with water, and 70% of the body is made up of water; water pollution can have a devastating effect on life. It is important that everyone in the world can have safe drinking water.

Passage 2 3m (Understanding + Application of knowledge ) THE WATER CYCLE

English H.H.W. / Class VII / Page 5 of 7

The water cycle is the continuous movement of water between the surface of the Earth

and the air. The water cycle involves several steps involving evaporation, transpiration, condensation, and precipitation. It is a continuous cycle where water evaporates into the air and becomes part of a cloud, falls down to earth as precipitation, and then evaporates again. This repeats again and again in a cycle that lasts forever.

Evaporation is when the sun heats up the waters in oceans, lakes, and other bodies of water. The water then changes into a gas. The water or moisture, now a gas, then evaporates into the air. This continuously takes place all over the world.

Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water in the form of water vapor. Transpiration is similar to evaporation by getting the water vapor from plants back up into the air. It is also a part of the Earth's water cycle. It takes place continuously as plants grow using the water that passes through the roots of the plants and is then released into the air.

Condensation occurs when the water vapor in the air becomes cold and changes back into a liquid. During the water cycle, clouds are formed due to condensation. It is also condensation when water droplets from the air form on the outside of a cold drink. Condensation also occurs following a hot shower. The water from the shower changes to a water vapor and the droplets cover the mirror and other objects in the room.

Precipitation is rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground. Precipitation occurs during the water cycle when the air can no longer hold water that had been evaporated. The clouds get heavy and the evaporated water falls back to the earth as precipitation.

Rain forms in clouds when the clouds are large enough to have water droplets. The water droplets collide and form raindrops. Snow is formed when water vapor changes directly to a solid at a temperature of less than 32°F. Sleet is basically rain drops that freeze into ice pellets before reaching the ground. Hail is cooled water that freezes on contact with ice crystals in clouds normally occurring in the summer months, and usually during thunderstorms.

When precipitation ends up on the land it soaks into Earth and becomes ground water. The ground water is then used by plants and animals for drinking. Groundwater may be stored in aquifers. Aquifers are underground layers of rock that are saturated with water. This can be brought to the surface through natural springs or by pumping.

If precipitation runs over the soil and collects in the oceans, lakes or rivers it is called runoff. Runoff is the flow of water that occurs when excess storm water, meltwater, or other sources flows over the earth's surface. Once this precipitation ends up in or on the Earth's surface, the water cycle begins all over again.

In summary the Earth's water cycle continuously occurs throughout the world. The four processes include evaporation, transpiration, condensation, and precipitation. Precipitation is

English H.H.W. / Class VII / Page 6 of 7

water that falls to the Earth through rain, snow, sleet, or hail. As the water reached the Earth's surface it may become ground water stored in aquifers, or if the Earth can no longer hold the water it becomes runoff. The water then flows back into the Earth's different bodies of water.

SCIENCE HOLIDAY HOMEWORK

CLASS 7

We at EICHER SCHOOL always believe that science is not about only reading but observing experiencing , experimenting and creating.

Present scenario through which we are going has compelled us to restrict our movements but we must not forget that mind, imagination and its power has no boundaries and we must harness this power to keep ourselves strong and healthy.

In order to help you initiate this process we have designed some project work for you.Do it to understand the concepts already learneed in a better way.

Save water is the call of today. Going organic is the new mantra for healthy life . In our science classes held in this session till now , we have completed the lessons with topic Water and Fibre to Fabric.

Mask has become a life saving accessory for all of us today. Lets try to be 'ATMANIRBHAR' and ENVIRONMENTALIST.As well as CREATIVE by designing mask in a sustainable way.

1. MAKING COLORED DIY MASKS (activity to be done individually by every child)

(To create a mask using the organic dyes at home with minimum cost)

Step 1. Collect water left after washing vegetables in a bowl.

Step 2. Add some dried petals of marigold flowers in this water, leave it for 2-3 hrs .

Step 3. Soak a white cotton cloth in this water. (you may use some unstitched cotton cloth/ handkerchief /new kitchen duster / new white cotton socks )

Step 4 . After 4-5 hrs take the cloth out, squeeze lightly and dry . You will notice the cloth got dyed with natural colour .

Step 5. Repeat the experiment :

RO waste water + dried peels of 2 pomegranate

Ac water + turmeric

Waste water left after washing fruits + red cabbage

After drying the fabric use your imagination to make a mask out of it .

Please note : you can make decorative designs or sketch out face ,lips outline using soap water as paint on turmeric dye and red cabbage dye

Subject: Science

We all know that water is precious for life. But fresh potable water is becoming scarce day by day due to irresponsible behaviour of humans.

This is reversed by aware citizens who conserve water by adopting sustainable technique and practises.

Let us come together to explore the good work being done in our country in this field. This will make us aware of the need and ways to conserve water in every possible way.

For this investigatory project the class is divided into groups as follows

GROUP A :ROLL NO 1-5

GROUP B :ROLL NO 6-10

GROUP C :ROLL NO 11-15

GROUP D :ROLL NO 16-20

GROUP E :ROLL NO 20-25

GROUP F :ROLL NO 25-till last roll no.

Each investigatory project is divided into 3 stages:

STAGE1: CASE STUDY

STAGE 2 : MAKING A QUESTIONNARE BASED ON THE PROJECT (MAX 8 QUESTIONS)
