NUEVO MEXICO. This postmark was used by the SANTA FE postottice during the Spanish and Mexic"n regimes, between1800 lind the Americlln Occupation in 1846.The cover shownabove, bearing this postlllark in red, is addressed to theAlcalde (mayor) ot the City at Chiguagua (Chihuahua), trollthe Alcllide at the ·Vil.l.a a Sta Fee-. The numeral 3 manusc_ript is the postage in Spanish reals.NO year date, but mostprobably used litter Mexico got its Independence tram Spainin 1821 - during the early 1820's. This is the first coverto show that this postmark was applied at SANTA FE andit alSO is the earliest recorded use at this postmark bymore than twenty years.

TOME vas established by the Spani5h government in 1695.Locatcd about80 miles south at Santa Fe.on the east side of the Rio Grande River. Itvas a station on the ilL CAMINO REAL.The folded letter shown above.bearing the straightline postmark in red. is datelined at -Bele.ll (Belen]Mayo 20 de 1823".Belen is a little S.W of TOME on the west side ot theRio Grande. The letter is addressed to Don Lorenzo Lopez at Chihugua.Besides the TOME postmarle it bears a large manuscript "3" reals rateot that oltice.Apparently the letter was carried over an alternateroute as it bears a manuscript postmark of "Arizpe 5r.(5anoral" and anadditional -3" reals rate marking below the postmarle. It may have gonethis way because of Indian troubles that frequently plagued the CaminOReal-But,more likely, it could have gone to Chihauhua and then beenforwarded to Ar i lope, which would expla i 1'1 the extra - 3- rea IS charge. This cover bears the earliest use of the TOKE post marie by more then tvodecades.

DSATH OF J.l>D£DIAH S. SMITH ON TIl£ SAMTA F£ TRAILHistoric letter written by William L. Sublette fro~ Walnut Creek, near theArkansas river, on September 24,1831, to Wm. H. Ashley, Placed In the mail.at "Independence Ho October 1st" 1831. Rates 18 3/4 cents to St. Louis.

~k**********************************

"The l"tter is paral1el"d somewhat by t ..o e"tant letters ..ritten fro~ thesame locality on the .ame day, by Austin Smith to his fath"r and brother, and all three letters setting forth the circumstances of the death ofJededlah Smith at the hands of the Comanches, besides detailing PeterSmith's venture< In association with Sam',,, 1 Parkman lin the CalifornialNew MeXican trade. In addition, Sublette's letter give. a much more detailed account of Hinter's being killed by the Pawnees, the only sourceto date the occurrence (stated as June 19, but transparently Hay 19;Sublette dates Smith's death for June 27, a similar mistake for May 27).Moreover, Sublette provides details as to the dissolution of his partnership with David E. Jackson <Smith,Sublette &Jackson), recounts the mOuntain news insofar as it has filtered south to Santa Fe, remarks on thereturns of the traders, and indicates something of the nature of his ownbusiness relationship with Ashley. The letter is a major documentation offur trade history." Dale L.Morgan, October 2,1956.

Decatur, Illin01s.JWle 8th 1962.

Bear Floyd:

I finally located your wanted newspaper item aftertwo trips to Springfield in search of it. This wae quitea chase but still a lot of fun doing it.

First, tho, the encloaed is a verifaJI: from it and 1slousy but they are having photostat copies made for us, infact I expected them all thie week but they have not 001:16in BO far. So I must write and let you know, anyway, thatit has been found. If the photostats do not make completereading I w111 have to just go back and co,y the article infull for you. And w111 gladly do eo.

But the search aleo revealed other interesting thingsabout this Baitor. jo'iret of aJ.l he only pUblishea. tte Bellville Til'l:se for a bit short of three years time and thentook off for the gold fields in the gold rush of '4S. Hswas in a party With Fred Snyder, who dabbled in newspaperwQrk back in Bellville and then in San Francisco on the AltaCalifornian.

There are no copies of Gelwicks paper in the statefiles at all. So I started going thru the :aellville Advocatehoping that that editor would have lifted the piece and putit in his paper. :aut he dtd not do so it appears. Then thehhought occurred that perhaps old Doc Snyder might have clipped the article because he saved everything and pasted themin scrap books. So on the second trip there, lust monday, Isearched the scrap books of old Doc and eventually found thatmy hunch was correct. But in pasting them onto the book pagesthey became uneven on their surfacee and will not reproduceon verifS': for sOllle portions just will not press down tightly.Hencs the trial by photostate. But one way or another you willhave your data.

The Advocate ran excerpts and notations that were of in_terest respecting Uel1by' S COCIll!U1d from time to time. Such as:

June 1 1848: Santa Fe; ~Last night we received a Santa FeRepublican of the 11th llarch. Col Newby and Faymester UajorSigner's clerk left on the Sth for Ta08. ~

U. S.HJLJTARY OCCUPATION OF SANTA FE.

S<lnta Fe ,July 17 /49. Cover beanl the latest recorded postmark under the militarygovernment. Carried up the Santa Fe Tr,I11 by a military express or a civilianfreighter. SEE content of letter on opposite page. It is very probable that KitCarson did act illS their guide. but only long enough to get them started in the rightdirection. In Jilin/Feb of 1849 Charles Fremont spent three weeks with Carson and hewanted Kit to go onto Cal1forniil with him, but C"rsons wife vas pregnllnt and this wasprobably the reason he did not go. She gave birth to their first-born who only sur_vived ill fev months and this could have been the reason he did not go "11 the way "'estwith the Tremaine party. Fremont took the southern route and thllt was probably thesame route followod by the Tremaine party.
