Facilitators’ Guide: Martian Math The intent of the facilitators’ guide is for each facilitator to write your own notes as we move through each section. We will be stopping after each section to provide time to share thoughts and ideas about how best to facilitate that section with your teachers. This approach is also intended to model a way to have your teachers develop and write their own concept lesson around the concept task. It is only by having teachers actively engage in thinking about and developing their own concept lessons that we will change classroom practice. Overview Teacher Task i. Rationale ii. Facilitators’ Guide: Martian Math Objectives:

The objectives of the day of professional development are:

1. Teachers will explore the mathematics of Algebra 1Unit 4 (Teacher Task)

2. Teachers will deepen their understanding of the central role that symbols and symbolic manipulation have in Algebra, especially in the context of Unit 4 (Teacher and Student Task)

3. Teachers will investigate a conceptual task that explores the basis of symbolic reasoning (Student Task)

4. Teachers will plan and discuss the implementation of task that requires critical thinking and symbolic reasoning of their students (Lesson Plan)

5. Teachers will plan and discuss the implementation of a task for all their students including EL, SEL and students with disabilities (Lesson Plan)

6. Teachers will learn about the web 2.0 and its power as a community tool (wiki sharing)

7. Teachers will share thoughts, ideas and their experience about the concept lesson and task in a web forum (wiki sharing)

Critical Question to askWhat makes Unit 4 different from the other Units in Algebra 1?

What did the facilitator do to introduce the activity?

What additional steps might you use to introduce the activity?

What are the objectives of the activity?

What questions will you ask your teachers as you facilitate the activity?

How did the facilitator close the activity?

What additional steps might you use to close the activity with your teachers?

Critical Question to askWhat are the unifying characteristics of all of these sample questions?

Critical Question to considerWhat accommodations could you make for teachers who may be struggling with the mathematics?

What are the objectives of the activity?

What questions will you ask your teachers as you facilitate the activity?

How did the facilitator close the activity?

What else might you do to introduce this task to your teachers?

How will your teachers be grouped for this task?

How will you respond if teachers say “I teach my kids to use FOIL/The box Method/etc. so I don’t need to do this task with them”?

What questions will you ask of teachers who might be experiencing difficulties starting the task?

How will you close this activity?

Key idea!

It is essential that teachers understand that part A of the task revolves around the distributive property. All polynomial multiplication is based upon this idea. This overall goal (and that of having the students think critically) must be central features of their lesson planning.

Write your own notes about using the wiki website.

Every facilitator must have logged in and used the site before attempting to demonstrate its use in a Professional Development with teachers. [Anything that can go wrong – will go wrong, so being very prepared is essential!!]

Student Task: Part B GeneralizingThis part of the task will probably take a very short time for teachers to complete. It is the planning and discussion of the objectives of this task that are critical.

Having the students write the general rule gives an opportunity for students to work together and employ their social and writing skills in the mathematics classroom.

When facilitating the task it is important to have the teachers write their own rules.

Note: The rule should not be FOIL, or some other procedure, the objective is to have the students (and teachers) focus on the pattern that results in the coefficient of x being the sum of a and b, and the “constant” term at the end the product of a and b.

What questions do you think teachers will have about this part of the task?

Facilitators’ Guide: Martian Math Critical Issue:

The most important planning questions are A), B) and C) in the “Critical Issue” box.

How will you have teachers discuss and share their thoughts on these questions?

Facilitators’ Guide: Martian Math For students the key to this task is writing and thinking critically.

Many teachers teach factoring by using “guess and check” methods or will teach students skip from step 1 to step 4. If your teachers are unfamiliar with factoring by grouping then showing them an example where the same method works despite more difficult coefficients might be useful.

Example:

Concept Lesson: Part C GroupingThe teachers’ planning must focus upon giving their students the time to discuss and explore the different steps of this process.

It is also vital that the students be given the opportunity to practice their writing skills.

How will your teachers be sharing their information and ideas?
