Welcome to the second issue of the Egypt Exploration Society’s Cairo

Newsletter. The first issue represented a big step forwards for us in our efforts to raise awareness of our work in Egypt, not least due to its being published in both English and Arabic, and I’m delighted to say that we ran out of copies very quickly! The first few hundred were distributed to colleagues throughout Egypt but most were taken by visitors to the British Council buildings in Agouza, Cairo, where our office is based.

We have also now created a Facebook page dedicated to our activities in Cairo, ‘The Egypt Exploration Society - Cairo Friends’ (http://goo.gl/G8hw6c) to make it easier for you all to keep up to date with our lectures, classes, publications and other activities. Please be sure to visit us there if you haven’t done so already! The number of EES members in Egypt continues to rise but we want more! By joining the EES you become a part of one of the oldest scientific institutions in the country (see p.2 on the history of the Society), and can be proud in the knowledge that your subscription fee goes towards our work, helping to safeguard Egypt’s heritage.

In order to attract more members this year we have decided to increase the benefits of joining, giving you improved access to our library and publications, including the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology. For more details (please see p.8)We hope that any of you who are already members will try to persuade others to join, and that those of you who are not yet members will consider joining yourselves! We continue to run a very busy programme of events. Since the last issue we have run practical classes on ‘Drawing Archaeological Objects’ and ‘An Introduction to Ancient Egyptian Pottery’, and a variety of lectures on the latest discoveries by EES projects and other colleagues including Dr Daniela Rosenow, ‘Roman and Late Antique glass finds from Tell Basta, Tell Mutubis and Tell Foqaa’, Prof Miroslav Barta, ‘In the realm of Osiris: latest discoveries in Abusir’, Prof Alejandro Jiménez-Serrano, ‘Recent excavations in the Middle Kingdom funerary complexes at Qubbet el-Hawa (Aswan)’ and Dr Joanne Rowland, ‘The Sacred Falcon Necropolis at Quesna, Minufiyeh Province’. We also hosted a day of lectures by specialists on the first great age of ancient Egypt, the Old Kingdom. The

The Egypt Exploration Society was founded in 1882, as the Egypt Exploration Fund in order to explore,

survey, and excavate at ancient sites in Egypt and Sudan, and to publish the results of this work. Today it is one of the leading such archaeological organisations.

In the winter of 1873-74 a redoubtable English lady novelist and travel writer, Miss Amelia Edwards, was driven by wet weather in Europe to the sunnier and warmer climate of Egypt. With several friends she hired a houseboat, a dahabiyeh, and they travelled up the Nile from Cairo to Abu Simbel, a journey which Miss Edwards described in her book, A Thousand Miles up the Nile, first

published in 1876 and reprinted many times since. The book became a bestseller, not only for the fascinating view it gave of nineteenth century Egypt but also for its description

of the antiquities of the ancient civilisation which were, at that time, largely unexcavated and neglected. Amelia Edwards, together with Reginald Stuart Poole of the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, founded the Egypt Exploration Fund in 1882 in order, as announced at the time in several daily newspapers, ‘to raise a fund for the purpose of conducting excavations in the Delta, which up to this time has been very rarely visited by travelers’, and this was the begining of the EES.

programme for the coming weeks is also very full – (please see p.6-7) for further details. We hope to see many of you at some of these events in the coming weeks and months – all are welcome! Of course, in addition to our activities in Cairo our archaeological expeditions have been hard at work in the field in recent months at sites including Luxor, Merimde / Beni Salama, Quesna, Tell Basta, Tell Buweib and Tell Mutubis during Spring 2014 (see p.3). We are delighted to announce that we will be supporting two projects led by young Egyptologists in the coming year through the Society’s Centenary Fund, one led by British archaeologist James Bennett at the Delta site of Tell Gumaiyima, and a second by Egyptian archaeologist Mohamed Megahed who will be conducting a survey of monuments in the pyramid complex of Djedkare at Saqqara. It’s a pleasure for us to be able to support the next generation of archaeologists working in Egypt in this way, and we are especially pleased that for the second year running, one of the projects will be carried out by an all-Egyptian team. Last year we gave a Centenary Award to Dr Hany El-Tayeb, to enable him to continue his work at the beautifully decorated mastaba of Rashepses at Saqqara, and you can read his report on (p.4-5).

Part of the aim of these projects is to recover as much information and archaeological remains as possible before it is lost – a problem which has been particularly acute recently due to the increase in illicit excavations since the revolution. In addition to our efforts in the field we have also been active in trying to prevent the disappearance of antiquities from public to private collections through sale at auction. In September the Society opposed the sale of a group of objects excavated by Flinders Petrie at the site of Harageh near the Faiyum in a statement issued jointly by the EES and Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology (see http://goo.gl/m58hT3). Fortunately, the objects were withdrawn by the auctioneer and a sale negotiated privately that would allow the objects to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New

York, where they will remain accessible to the public. We remain concerned that similar sales may take place in future however, and are committed to assisting the Ministry of Antiquities by doing everything we can to prevent this from happening.

Several publications have appeared in recent weeks, including David O’Connor’s volume on The Old Kingdom Town at Buhen, and a second volume in Penny Wilson’s series on her work at Sais, Sais II: The Prehistoric Period at Sa el-Hagar. We will also be reprinting the fourth edition of Who Was Who in Egyptology which was originally published in 2012, and the 45th issue of our magazine Egyptian Archaeology and the 100th volume of the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology will both appear in the next few weeks. All of our publications are available from the Cairo Office, with special discount prices available to EES members. (Please see p. 3) for further details.

Our London office has felt a little more like Egypt in recent times thanks to our six Egyptian ‘EES Scholars’ who were in London during September to use our library and archives and to visit various colleagues and institutions. It was a wonderful experience for the EES team in London and we are very much hoping to be able to bring further scholars over in 2015. A fuller report on their visit appears on (p.5-6). The response to our offer of English language training for Ministry of Antiquities employees has been overwhelming with well over 100 applications received for just 12 places. We are extremely grateful to our friends at the British Council for their generous support of both of these initiatives.

The Old Kingdom Town at Buhen (350 LE)David O’Connor

This long-awaited volume publishes the excavations by the Egypt Exploration Society of the Old Kingdom Town at Buhen, directed by W. B. Emery between 1962 and 1964. Following Emery’s unexpected death in 1971, the material was prepared by David O’Connor, who had been a Site Supervisor at Buhen. The volume presents the location, excavation and extent of the Old Kingdom Town, descriptions of structural and architectural features and a discussion of Egyptian ceramic as well as Nubian sherds, followed by catalogue of lithic artefacts.

Sais II: The Prehistoric Period at Sa el-Hagar (350 LE)Penelope Wilson, Gregory Gilbert and Geoffrey Tassie

Sais II: The Prehistoric Period is the final publication of the EES/Durham/SCA excavations carried out in 2007 in the ‘Great Pit’ at Sa el-Hagar, ancient Sais. It contains a full discussion of the layers dating to the Neolithic and Buto-Maadi Periods, with specialist reports on the chipped and ground stone tools, small finds, pottery, animal bones and flora. As the only Neolithic site so far excavated on the Nile floodplain in Egypt, the site has important implications for understanding the Neolithisation of the Delta and the development of Predynastic settlements in the north of Egypt.

Who Was Who in Egyptology (4th ed.) (175 LE)Morris L. Bierbrier (ed.)

The civilization of ancient Egypt has been a source of fascination for explorers and scholars for centuries, and has occupied a special place in the imagination of the public ever since early travellers’ descriptions and illustrations of the strange culture of temples, tombs and hieroglyphs began to circulate around the world. The story of Egyptology from a hobby for the educated and wealthy to a highly formalized academic discipline provides the key to understanding how and why we know what we know about ancient Egypt. This biographical dictionary tells the stories of the most important contributors and will be an indispensable reference tool for scholars and enthusiasts alike.

funding reSearch aT Saqqara and Tell gumaiyima

In March, we invited applications from early-career Egyptologists for grants from our Centenary Fund. This year, the Society was able to make a total of £6,000 available for these Awards, an increase of 50% on the previous year.

The Centenary Awards are intended to fund small research projects that would otherwise not be undertaken, and to provide not only funding but also valuable experience in planning and delivering a fieldwork or research project – usually in Egypt. Recipients are expected to share the results of their work online, and through the Egypt Exploration Society’s publications and events programme. We had twenty-five applicants for the grants – an increase on the number in 2012, and the highest number for at least 10 years – and the quality of the proposals was extremely high. The Society’s Fieldwork & Research Committee and Board of Trustees had a difficult job in deciding which of the wide range of interesting projects to fund, because, as ever, the available funds were not sufficient to support as many as we would have liked. We are delighted to announce that awards will be made to fund the following two projects:

• James Bennett – Survey and excavation of Tell Gumaiyima• Mohamed Megahed – Documentation of the pyramid complex of Djedkare in Saqqara • We are very pleased to be able to fund James’ and Mohamed’s work, and look forward to sharing the results

in due course. They follow in the footsteps of previous Award winners, many of whom have gone on to become distinguished Egyptologists and to hold senior positions at institutions around the world. We wish James and Mohamed the same success!

• The Society is committed to supporting the next generation of Egyptologists, through these awards and also bursaries to assist students attending the annual Current Research in Egyptology conference. We anticipate that the next round of Centenary Awards and the next EES Scholarships for Egyptian researchers will be advertised in spring 2015.

RESEARCH GRANTSCENTENARY AWARDS 2014

In 2012 I was awarded a grant from the EES Centenary Fund, which enabled him to excavate the burial chamber

of the Saqqara tomb of Rashepses. The tomb of Rashepses (LS16), dating to the reign of King Djedkare, is situated just to the north of Djoser’s Step Pyramid complex at Saqqara and has been known since the early 1800s. However, a large part of the mastaba had remained unexcavated until 2010 when I re-started archaeological work at the tomb for my PhD. Neither the burial chamber of the tomb nor its point of access are mentioned in previous studies (Lepsius, Denkmäler, pp.165-170, pls 60-64; Porter & Moss, Topographical Bibliography III2, pp.494-496; Quibell, Excavations at Saqqara (1907-1908), pp.23-24, pls 60-61.2) so one of the aims of the renewed exploration was to investigate the tomb-owner’s burial apartment. In 2010, a square shaft (1.90m along each side) was found in the area north-west of the false-door room. The shaft fill consisted of a mixture of local limestone, sand and fragments of pottery, with a few human bones. At a depth of 11m an entrance led from the south wall of the shaft into a large burial chamber which measures 5.4m x 5.0m, is 2.5m high and has painted decoration. Painted burial chambers are known at Saqqara from the late Fifth/early Sixth Dynasty but Rashepses’ tomb, of the reign of King Djedkare, seems to be the earliest known example. At Giza the earliest painted burial chambers date to the time of Djedkare/Unas (e.g. that of Senedjemib- Inti - see Kanawati, Decorated Burial Chambers, pp.43–46). Three walls, those

on the east, west and north, of Rashepses’ burial chamber were decorated. Cut into the bedrock, they were first plastered and then the scenes were painted. Some parts of the decoration are in bad condition and damaged, but

On 1 September 2014 six of the brightest young Egyptian Egyptologists visited the UK to spend

a month at the EES and elsewhere pursuing research projects and gaining experience relevant to their work for the Ministry of Antiquities. The idea behind the scholarships was very s t r a i gh t fo rward . Access to high quality Egyptology research libraries in Egypt is very limited, and puts our colleagues who are studying there at a disadvantage. Meanwhile, in London, the Society has one of the finest Egyptology libraries in the world. We knew that if we could find the funds to bring one or more of the most promising researchers to London to make use of our resources,

it would make a significant difference to them and to their work for the Ministry of Antiquities. From the outset we were committed to offering the scholarships in open competition to ensure that they would be

awarded to the most deserving c a n d i d a t e s . We received approximate ly 100 applications for the six places which made for a lot of work at the shortlisting stage, but also offered a wonderful opportunity to get to know the field much better than we had up to that point. In reading the applications, i n t e r v i e w i n g

many parts are surprisingly well preserved, still showing the bright colours used by the ancient artists. The east wall contains three niches with floors slightly higher than the floor level of the chamber. Each niche measures 1.0m x 1.4m. The lintel above the niches is inscribed with the titles and name of the tomb-owner: ‘..Seal-bearer of the King of Lower Egypt, Hereditary Prince, Chief Justice and Vizier, Overseer of the Scribes of the King’s Documents, Overseer of a Troop-house/ Work-place, Overseer of the Nomes of Lower Egypt, King’s Liegeman, Staff of the rekhyt people, Juridical adj-mer Official, Support of knmwt, Priest of Maat, Rashepses.’ Rashepses’ title of Vizier is otherwise found only in the main entrance of the tomb and on some blocks that were discovered in the last season. Of his 33 known titles, Rashepses lists only 11 in his burial chamber; perhaps the ones that he considered most important or significant. The west wall of the chamber has two niches: a large one, which contains a limestone sarcophagus, and a smaller niche probably intended for the canopic jars. A fragment of a human skull (probably that of Rashepses himself) was found inside the sarcophagus, and a part of a limestone canopic jar was discovered next to the small niche. The walls of the niche are decorated with the palace-façade motif. The north end of the west wall is covered with a beautifully painted scene, which depicts rows of different animals (all males). The scene consists of five registers described here from top to bottom: Register 1 shows four partly damaged oryx, which were called in ancient Egyptian ma-hedj. They have typically long and only slightly curved horns, and they are painted white with red-brown throats and bellies, and with dark brown colour around their eyes. Around the necks of each oryx is a rope tied to a wedge in the ground. Register 2 contains four screw-horn antelopes (ancient nu-dju). The front parts of their bodies

are painted a bright azure colour while their hind-quarters and legs are white. They also are tied with ropes around their necks to wedges. Register 3 displays five Nubian ibex (wild goat, ancient nia), which are marvellously coloured. The first ibex is coloured light brown, as is the second one though only its head and legs are visible. The other three are painted brown, with individual dark hairs executed by the artists over the background hair-colour. Shadows visible around the figures of the animals provide evidence of the artist’s corrections, as he at first painted them too large and had to revise his drawing at a smaller scale. The ibex are also tied to wedges by ropes around their necks. Register 4 is much damaged but still shows parts of four gazelles (ancient gehes), painted red, with only their bellies and mouths white. Above the first and the second gazelles are the remains of a badly damaged hieroglyphic text describing each of them as a ‘young gazelle’. The ropes around the necks of the gazelles can be seen but the wedges are lost. Register 5 includes a damaged scene of slaughtering cattle with the first two butchers carving a white and black ox whose throat is red with blood. Above the scene, a hieroglyphic text reads: ‘choice cuts of a young ox’. Three more male figures are partly preserved in the register; two seem to be dealing with another bull, and the text above them reads ‘pull toward you strongly’. The third man has a large knife and the text above him says ‘sharpening of the knife’. The decoration of the rest of the burial chamber includes offering lists, depictions of offerings and offering-bearers. From the south part of the chamber, a sloping passage leads up to ground level. It is closed by a large limestone block and has not yet been explored, but probably leads from the floor of the open courtyard to the burial chamber. It will be investigated in the coming season.

Their visit confirmed what we had already known: that researchers in other countries are generally better provisioned, in terms of books, journals, but also research tools such as the Online Egyptological

BibliographyTopographical Bibliography (‘Porter and Moss’), and the skills to make use of them, than their counterparts in Egypt. But the visit seems to have been at least as useful in other ways as well: in providing the opportunity to meet colleagues studying or working in similar areas, to see how Egyptian but also other kinds of artefact are displayed and conserved, to see how archaeological and historic sites and monuments are looked after and interpreted. During the course of the month the group visited The British, Petrie, Ashmolean, Fitzwilliam and Garstang Museums, the Griffith Institute and Highclere Castle and we are extremely grateful to colleagues at these and other institutions elsewhere who gave so generously of their time to show the scholars round and to discuss their research and work with them individually and as a group. They also had the opportunity to attend lectures and other events hosted by Ancient World Tours, UCL, The Friends of the Petrie Museum, the British Museum, and British Egyptian Society. The scholars themselves contributed presentations on their work at EES events at Doughty

Mews, the Egyptian Education and Cultural Bureau and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).the outset, the idea of the scholarships was very well received and generated an enormous amount of goodwill towards the Society, not least among our colleagues in Egypt of course. But the scholars themselves have also acted as excellent ambassadors: for the scholarships programme, for the EES and British Council, but also for Egypt and for the Ministry of Antiquities. Our colleagues around the UK were evidently very supportive of the idea and very impressed by the group. Their passion for their work, and enthusiasm to make the most of the

opportunity to visit the UK, their warmth towards all of us at the Society – staff, Trustees, and the members they were able to meet – and above all the tremendous amount of fun they brought to their time with us, has made the whole experience enormously rewarding and enjoyable for all concerned. We are very much hoping to be able to repeat the exercise next year, and in general to develop and improve what we can do to assist our colleagues in Egypt. Thank you for your support over the last year. Your membership of the Society is vital to us and without it we would not be able to continue our work: to explore ancient sites and monuments in Egypt and to raise awareness of the importance of protecting its heritage.

This has never been more important and urgent than it is now. Since 25 January 2011 Egypt’s heritage has been threatened like never before. Throughout this time our teams have continued to uncover more evidence of the country’s past, much of which might otherwise have been lost. By sharing the latest discoveries with you in Egyptian Archaeology, the Journal (JEA) and through our lecture series, we are helping to raise awareness of the situation and to create a lasting record what has been found. It is vital that we continue this work and, with your support, we now want to extend what we are doing in Egypt.

Subscriptions for 2014-15 are due on 1 September, and should be paid via Essam Nagy in the Society’s Cairo Office (details above) as soon as possible. This year we have decided to increase the rates for the first time in many years. The new rates are as follows:

Subscriptions are now the largest source of income for the Society, and we are therefore heavily reliant on them to continue our work. تاريخ مجعية إستكشاف مرصتأسيس مجعية إستكشاف مرص وبداياهتا:

تأسست مجعية إستكشاف مرص عام 1882م، حتت مسمى صندوق إستكشاف مرص وذلك لعمل التسجيل واحلفائر وتوثيق املواقع القديمة بكال من مرص والسودان، العمل ىف الرائدة املنظامت إحدى حاليا اجلمعية وتعترب األعامل. هذه نتائج ونرش األثرى. ىف شتاء عام 1873م ، 1874م، زارت الكاتبة والرحالة اإلنجليزية السيدة إميليا إدواردز مرص مع جمموعة من أصدقائها. و سافروا من القاهرة إىل أبو سمبل بمركب صغرية ، ىف رحلة وصفتها إيميليا ىف كتاهبا بعنوان ألف ميل فوق النيل، و الذى تم نرشة عام 1876م وأعيد طبعة عدة مرات بعد ذلك، وقد أصبح الكتاب األكثر مبيعا، ليس فقط النه أعطى صورا رائعه من القرن التاسع عرش بمرص ولكن أيضا لوصف األثار واحلضارة املرصية القديمة، والتى كانت مهملة ومل تكتشف بشكل

كبري ىف ذلك الوقت. وقد قامت إميليا إدواردز مع السيد رجيينال ستيوارت بول، من قسم العمالت وامليداليات باملتحف الربيطانى، بتأسيس صندوق إستكشاف مرص وذلك عام 1882م، بغرض مجع تربعات لعمل حفائر بالدلتا، والتى كانت و حتى وقتنا هذا تواجه صعوبة لزيارة مواقعها األثرية.

هذا مصــر، إستكشاف مجعية تدعمها التى املئوية ملنحة األثار جمال

جنية 6000 إىل املنحة لتلك املخصص املبلغ زيادة من متكنا العام

بعد حصولة عىل منحة مجعية إستكشاف مرص، والنتائج منشورة ىف جملة

رع دفن غرفة بعنوان: واملقال اجلمعية تصدرها والتى املرصية األثار

ىف الباحثني من القادم اجليل بمساندة اجلمعية تلتزم بسقارة. شبسس

ملساعدة الدراسية املنح أيضا و املنحة تلك خالل من املرصية، األثار

عن اإلعالن نتوقع املرصية، لألثار السنوى املؤمترات حلضور الباحثني

املنح القادمة ىف ربيع 2015 م.

حجرة دفن مقربة رع شبسس يف سقارة:اسييس، جدكارع امللك عهد إىل سقارة يف شبسس رع مقربة ترجع

ويعد رع شبسس من كبار رجال الدولة يف عهد اسييس حيث نال العديد

اهلامة، حيث كان وزيرا ورئيسًا الوظائف الكثري من األلقاب وشغل من

السفل.. مرص أقاليم عىل ومرشفًا مرص صعيد عىل ومرشفا للقضاة،

تقع الرجل. ناهلا لقبًا 33 إىل وصلت التي األلقاب من العديد وغريها

حوايل بعد وعىل جرس للملك اهلرمية املجموعة شامل شبسس رع مقربة

ستة أمتار فقط من السور الشاميل للمجموعة اهلرمية سالفة الذكر. عرفت

املقربة منذ بدايات القرن التاسع عرش، حيث زارها العديد من الرحالة ومن

أمههم الربيطاين جيمس بورتون ، مل يرد أي ذكر حلجرة الدفن يف الدراسات

السابقة عن املقربة لذا كان من أهم األهداف إلعادة إكتشاف املقربة العثور

عىل حجرة الدفن، ويف عام 2010 يف املوسم الثالث من احلفائر عثر عىل بئر

مربع طول أضالعه 190 سم، يقع البئر شامل غرب حجرة الباب الومهي

كتل عن عبارة البئر يف الرديم وكان املوسم نفس يف البئر تنظيف وتم

وقليل الفخارية، القطع وبعض ورمال ملقاة، املحيل احلجر من حجرية

جدا من بقايا عظام آدمية، وعىل عمق 11مرت ويف اجلانب اجلنويب من البئر

عثر عىل فتحة مربعة تقريبًا تؤدي إىل حجرة كبرية إىل حد ما، لكن املدهش

يف األمر أن احلجرة كانت مزخرفة، مما أدى إىل تغيري معلومة تارخيية غاية يف

األمهية أنه مل تظهر حجرات دفن يف سقارة منقوشة قبل عرص ونيس وربام

الدفن حجرة هبا املزخرف املقابر تأريخ وبدراسة السادسة، األرسة قبل

القديمة عىل الدولة دفنه يف أول من زخرف حجرة أن رع شبسس يظهر

اإلطالق. ثالثة جدران مزخرفة يف حجرة الدفن كالتاىل: اجلدار الرشقي:

أرضية مستوى من قلياًل أعىل مستواها كبرية كوات ثالثة عىل حيتوي

من أفقي سطر الثالث الكوات أعىل تقريبا. متساوية مقاساهتا احلجرة

الكتابة اهلريوغليفية يمثل ألقاب صاحب املقربةوهي كالتايل: ) ... حامل

أختام ملك مرص السفىل، األمري الوراثي،، رئيس قضاة ووزير، مرشف عىل

كتبة وثائق امللك، مرشف عىل بيت اجلند أو العاملة، مرشف عىل أقاليم مرص

السفىل، األول بعد امللك، خادم الرخيت ]العامة من الناس[ أو املتحدث

باسم الرخيت أمام امللك، موظف قضائي أو حاكم إقليم، املدعم لكنموت

وهم طبقة املعدمني من الشعب، كاهن ماعت رع شبسس(. كام زخرفت

حلملة منظر أيضًا ويظهر قرابني، قائمة من تقريبا متطابقتني نسختني

احلجر من وهو التابوت هبا الكربى كوتني به الغريب: اجلدار القرابني.

اجلريي األبيض وغري منقوش وجد الغطاء متحركا والتابوت مفتوح وليس

مججمة من جزء عىل التابوت بجوار عثر لكن املتوىف، ملومياء آثار أي به

بالتابوت زخرفت بمناظر واجهة املقربة، اجلدران املحيطة غالبا لصاحب

وغالبا التابوت جنوب الصغرى الكوة أما مهشم، معظمها ولكن لقرص

كانت خمصصة لوضع األواين الكانوبية.

الفنان بمنظر رائع حيث مثل الغريب زخرف الشاميل من اجلدار اجلزء

صفوف من حيوانات خمتلفة ) كلها ذكور( حيتوي املنظر عىل مخسة صفوف

من النقوش امللونة.

املنح الدراسية لعام 2014خالل سبتمرب املاىض، زار ستة من شباب الباحثني املرصيني إنجلرتا لقضاء شهر ىف مجعية إستكشاف مصــــر، إلستكامل أبحاثهم، وإكتساب اخلربات الالزمة

لعملهم بوزارة األثار. الغرض من هذه املنحة واضح للغاية، وهى اإلطالع عىل املكتبات اجليدة واألبحاث احلديثة . حيث أن مجعية إستكشاف مرص لدهيا واحدة من

أفضل املكتبات املتخصصة ىف األثار. كنا عىل يقني من احلصول عىل التمويل املادى لدعم واحد أو أكثر من الباحثني الواعدين إىل لندن لألستفادة من املصادر العلمية

جلمعية إستكشاف مرص، سيكون له تأثري علمى جديد ألبحاثهم ولعملهم باألثار. ومنذ البداية كنا حريصني عىل إعالن تلك املنح للجميع، وذلك لتأكيد حصوهلا ملن

يستحقها. تلقينا أكثر من 100 طلب للتقديم للمنحة، وذلك لستة أماكن مما تطلب

كثري من اجلهد إلختيار قائمة صغرية، وكانت فرصة جيدة ملعرفة الكثري من خالل

اإلطالع عىل طلبات التقديم، وتم عمل مقابلة مع 19 من املتقدمني، وتم نجاح ستة

هم، عفاف وهبة، مؤمن سعد حممد، حممد مجال راشد، حممد عيل يوسف، ربيع عيسى

حممد حسن، رهيام حممود زكى سيد، ملزيد من املعلومات حول كل من املرشحني

الباحثني خالل الزيارة، إستفت مثل زمالئى بلندن من الباحثني بام يتعلق بالبحث

ىف األثار املرصية، والطرق التى تساعد عىل تطوير ما نقدمة من منح ىف املستقبل.

وأكدت زيارهتم أن الباحثني ىف البلدان األخرى مدعومني بأفضل ما يساعدهم

من كتب، جمالت علمية، وأيضا طرق البحث ىف مواقع اإلنرتنت، واملهارات التى

تساعدهم من اإلستفادة أكثر من نظرائهم ىف مصــر. والزيارة كانت مفيدة لعدة

أسباب منها إتاحة الفرصة ملقابلة زمالء يدرسوا أو يعملوا ىف أماكن متشابه، وملعرفة

كيفية ، العناية باملواقع األثرية والتارخيية. خالل زيارهتم للمملكة املتحدة قاموا بزيارة

عدد من املتاحف منها متحف برتى، األشمولني، فيتزويليام، جارستانج، معهد

جريفث وقلعة هايكلري، نشكر الزمالء ىف املتاحف واملعاهد املختلفة الذين قضوا

وقتا مع الباحثني الستة و مناقشة أبحاثهم وأعامهلم. وكان لدهيم الفرصة أيضا حلضور حمارضات ومؤمترات إستضافتها مؤسسات خمتلفه منها، جامعة لندن، أصدقاء

متحف برتى، املتحف الربيطانى واجلمعية الربيطانية املرصية.كام ساهم الباحثني بعرض أعامهلم بجمعية إستكشاف مرص، املركز الثقاىف املرصى، ومعهد الدراسات

الرشقية و األفريقية. القت فكرة املنحة منذ البداية ترحاب ودعم للجمعية، من الزمالئنا بمرص، كام أن الباحثني كانوا سفراء للمنحة، وجلمعية إستكشاف مرص و

للمجلس الثقاىف الربيطانى ، وأيضا ملرص ووزارة األثار. الزمالء ىف إنجلرتا كانوا مساندين للمنحة وسعداء بالباحثني.و حبهم لعملهم، ومحاسهم لتحقيق األستفادة

من زيارهتم ، وترحاهبم باجلميع ىف اجلمعية ، فريق العمل، األمناء، واألعضاء

السادة أعضاء مجعية إستكشاف مصــر،شكرا لدعمكم عىل مدار العام املايض. عضويتكم يف اجلمعية حيوية بالنسبة لنا وبدوهنا لن نكون قادرين عىل مواصلة أعاملنا: ألستكشاف وتسجيل

املواقع األثرية واملعامل األثرية يف مرص ورفع مستوى الوعي بأمهية محاية تراثها. وهو ما أصبح أكثر أمهية وإحلاحا. فمنذ 25 يناير عام 2011،

تعرض تراث مرص لتهديد مل حيدث من قبل. طوال هذا الوقت واصلت بعثاتنا األثرية العمل لكشف وتسجيل الرتاث، الذى يتعرض للكثري من

التدمري. وتبادل أحدث اإلكتشافات يف علم اآلثار املرصية ىف جملة األثار املرصية ومن خالل سلسلة من املحارضات، فإننا نساعد عىل زيادة الوعي

بالنسبة وتسجيل كل ما تم إكتشافه. حريصني عىل أن نواصل العمل، من خالل دعمكم، ونعمل جاهدين عىل توسيع ما نقوم به يف مرص. أما

لإلشرتاكات األعضاء لعام 2014- 2015 فهى جتدد يف 1 سبتمرب، وتدفع عن طريق األستاذ عصام ناجي بمكتب القاهرة. هذا العام قررنا زيادة

العضوية للمرة األوىل منذ سنوات عديدة. كام ييل:

العضو املنتسب: 120 جنيه

العضوية للطالب: 100 جنيه

اإلشرتاكات هي املصدر األكرب لدخل اجلمعية، وبالتايل فإننا نعتمد بشكل كبري عليها ملواصلة أعاملنا. اآلن نضطر إىل زيادة الدخل إذا أردنا أن

نواصل أعاملنا، وعالوة عىل ذلك، سوف نقوم أيضا بتقديم العديد من املزايا لألعضاء )انظر أدناه(.

مميزات العضوية كام ييل:

كل عام سوف تتلقى إصدارين من املجلة اإلخبارية للجمعية- إصدار القاهرة ، و سلسة األثار املرصية. ويف خريف هذا العام سيتم .

اإلحتفال بالعدد رقم 100 من جملة اآلثار املرصية، وسوف يتم توفري نسخ خمفضة لألعضاء بسعر 200 جنيه.

سيمكنكم األشرتاك للحصول عىل األعداد السابقة ملجلة األثار املرصية عرب موقع األنرتنت بأضافة 80 جنيها مرصيا للعضوية .

سيتم تقديم خصومات عىل مجيع مطبوعات مجعية إستكشاف مرص، بام يف ذلك كتب احلفائر والطبعة اجلديدة لكتاب علامء املرصيات، وختفيضات

يمكن ألعضاء مجعية بلندن، كام إستكشاف مرص الرئيسية جلمعية املكتبة إىل اإلنرتنت الوصول عرب إمكانية توفري امليدانية. كام سيتم للزيارات

إستكشاف مرص احلصول عىل نسخة رقمية للمقاالت والكتب التى تصدر بواسطة اجلمعية والتى نملك حقوق نرشها، وملن يريد أن يستفيد بتلك

اخلدمات من األعضاء يرجى األتصال بمكتب اجلمعية باألستاذ عصام ناجى، مع تفاصيل الكتب أو املقاالت التى حيتاج إليها. نأمل أن توافقوا
