Egnater News August, 2012 Bulletin b www.EgnaterAmps.com b Volume I. Issue 4 A message from Bruce Hello and welcome to our August, 2012, bulletin. is subject comes up oſten with some confusion. Let’s first define the two terms as they pertain to audio. MONO: A sound reproduction method where the audio source is reproduced equally through one or all loudspeakers in a “system”. STEREO: A sound reproduction method where the audio source is divided into dif- fering audio sound components and each of the components is reproduced by at least two loudspeakers requiring separate power amplifiers for each. Typically used in a leſt and right loudspeaker configuration. Now, think about your guitar rig. You have a head and a speaker cabinet. By definition this would be MONO because you have one sound source (the head) and one loudspeaker. Let’s say your head has an effects loop with one send and one return jack. Can this be stereo? No, because we still only have one source, one power amplifier and one loudspeaker. Is there a way to connect a stereo effects unit into the loop to make it stereo? No, the scenario hasn’t changed. en how do I use my stereo effects unit with my mono amp in true stereo? As we see, stereo means two different signals, two power amps and two speakers. To have a true stereo setup requires adding an additional speaker and power amp to your mono setup. e signal coming out of the effects send jack on your amp is mono. is would go to the single mono input of your effects unit. Now, one output (leſt) would connect to the effects return of your amp. e other effects unit output (right) would go to the separate power amp and speaker. Now when you activate a stereo ef- fect such as echo with ping-pong, or stereo flanging, the effect will automatically “pan” from side to side creating the true stereo effect. As we can also see, when the effects are bypassed (no effects are turned on) the signal passes through…..in mono. It does not really become “stereo” until you turn on an effect that is actually stereo. If you do wish to use a stereo effects gadget with your mono rig, the only option is to program the effects to be mono or you will be missing half (leſt or right) of your signal. You could use a mixer to “sum” or combine the leſt and right outputs into a single mono signal. is would require another piece of gear and would accomplish the same result as programming the effects for mono. If you have a mono setup and your effects stereo (ping/pong echo for example), you will only hear every other ping, or pong, because you can only use one of the two outputs from the effects unit. F ROM THE HUMBLE Tweaker to the fl agship Mod-ular system, the entire line of Egnater amps o ers guitarists great fl exibility for crafting signature tones. However, some guitarists have complained that Eg-

nater doesn’t make a dedicated metal amp. While this isn’t ex-actly true, the fact is that metal has been just one color in the rainbow of tones o ered by Egnater’s various amp models.

With the introduction of the 120-watt Arma-geddon head, Egnater is finally offering the fire-breathing high-gain amp that metalheads have asked for. But while the Armageddon has a more specific range of tones than other Egnater amps, it still provides guitarists the same

level of flexibility when it comes to dialing in their own sounds. Add in a bevy of professional features like built-in ISP noise reduction, a seven-button foot controller and MIDI, and the Armageddon promises to have guitarists bang-ing their heads well beyond judgment day.

FEATURES The Armageddon is a 120-watt, three-channel head powered by four 6L6 and six 12AX7 tubes. The bias section on the rear panel makes it easy to swap out the 6L6s for other power-tube options (EL34, 6550, 6V6, KT66, KT77 and more) and adjust the bias accordingly. Distinctive features include a built-in ISP Decimator G-String noise-reduc-tion circuit, a master midrange section that can be independently assigned to any or all of the three channels and engaged independently with a footswitch, and a footswitchable digi-tal reverb circuit with individual level controls for each channel.

Channel 1 is a clean/overdrive channel that offers ample headroom or a moderate amount of crunch with the gain control all the way up.
