INSIDE THE EFLINSIDE THE EFL50 YEARS OF EFL FOOTY

Welcome to our 50th season of EFL football. While the league’s grassroots can be traced back to the early 1900s, the league as we know it today began in February 1962, making this year’s premiers the 50th fl ag bearers.Celebrations are set to be enjoyed across the season as clubs are invited to participate on a number of levels. Read more inside this week’s record for more information about how your club can be recognised in what is an important milestone for the league and all clubs involved.Once again, the EFL has continued to grow with three clubs joining the league this year. Over 11,000 players are set to take the fi eld each week across the divisions and in excess of 40,000 individuals are involved on match days each weekend. The league will formally welcome Silvan to the competition as they travel to South Belgrave for the “mountainside derby” today. We also welcome Park Orchards to division four as it fi elds a Colts side for the fi rst time today. Lysterfi eld becomes the league’s newest junior side and will make its fi rst appearance in the junior competition on Sunday, April 3.Junior team numbers have expanded again, with 305 teams set to compete each weekend. The junior competition has expanded to four divisions over all age groups for the fi rst time, meaning six more premierships are now up for grabs from an extra 30 fi nals spots that are now available. The biggest growth has been seen in the under 8s age group, expanding from just six teams in 2010 to 14 in 2011, with their competition now being spread over two venues.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMIn 2011, we will have more Colts sides than ever before. With 41 Colts teams currently registered, we are confi dent that the future of the EFL’s senior clubs remains sound.Acacia Learning and Development Solutions has joined the EFL this year to offer a youth development program for Colts at most EFL clubs. The program includes fi ve workshops covering respect and responsibility, alcohol

and drugs, nutrition, injury prevention and management, skills and tactics, time management, communication and presentation skills, fi rst aid and personal fi nance. Participants who complete the program will receive a Certifi cate II in Sport (Career-Oriented Participation). The qualifi cation is nationally recognised and can ultimately form the basis for future opportunities in sport, further enhancing both Acacia and the EFL’s aim of not only training better players, but better people. There is still time for those clubs not yet committed to get involved.

HAWTHORN FC PARTNERSHIPThis week we announced a new partnership with Hawthorn Football Club. This will result in Hawthorn players supporting several community programs with the EFL throughout the region. Hawthorn players will act as ambassadors for the EFL in the EFL Eastlink Road Safety Program, the Junior Lightning Premiership, the Almost Little Legends Clinic and ‘Thanks Ump’ weekend. Hawthorn will also be involved in other community initiatives including a junior player academy and development program held at the Club’s elite training facility at Waverley Park. With plenty of Hawthorn players, including Sam Mitchell, being products of the EFL, we are excited as we anticipate the season ahead with Hawthorn as a partner.

SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEW

DIVISION 3 This is the Division where the really even battle will be in 2011. With no threat of relegation at the season’s end, all the teams will have everything to win and nothing to lose this year. Doncaster came so close last year after coming down from Division 2 the year before, and will be keen to make amends while Brett Moyle’s North Ringwood will be looking to prove that they have the goods after failing to deliver at the business end of the season last year, going out in straight sets in the fi nals. Coldstream will be an improver and will be trying to shake off the ‘best of the rest’ tag it has held for the past few seasons. The biggest surprise may be the resurgence of Mitcham. The Tigers are a proud club and whispers I am hearing from Walker Park suggest that have been very proactive in the off-season with the recruitment of former Melbourne Demon and Norwood player Simon Godfrey. After a tumultuous preseason, 2010 fi nalist Warrandyte will be determined to cement its position in the top four and with new coach Brett Davidson at the helm, look for an improvement from Chirnside Park. In their fi rst season in Division 3 last year, the Panthers fi nished ninth with fi ve wins, so the goal will be to step up in 2011 and challenge for a fi nals berth. On the back of a clubroom upgrade and premiership in Division 4 last year, Templestowe will still be

riding the wave of euphoria and should be able to cope with the step up in intensity to Division 3. Templestowe coach John Brown has suggested that the Dockers are not there to make up the numbers this year and September action is not out of the question.Ringwood makes it fi rst ever venture into Division 3 this year after a disappointing year in 2010. The Redbacks have appointed Nick Tennant as coach and have shown faith in their playing group from last year who were unlucky to be relegated. With some solid recruiting occurring at Boronia throughout the offseason, the Hawks will be a force to be reckoned with this year. They have added experienced AFL big man Ben Holland, former Basin captain Pat Garrity, and experienced utility Rod Church (Bayswater) to a side that already boasted dual EFL best and fairest winner Dean Grice. Coach Peter Bennett has said that they identifi ed the areas that needed improvement and the goal this year was to challenge for the fl ag and try to take the club to Division 2. The fi eld this year is wide open and the Pioneers will not be taken lightly. Although I think they face the toughest battle I’m sure they will take some big scalps throughout the year.

MY PREDICTION Premier – BoroniaRunner-Up – North RingwoodBiggest Improver - Mitcham

Each year we hear that every team has had a fantastic preseason and has been ‘fl ying on the track’ during the long hot summer. On the eve of the 50th anniversary season for the Eastern Football League, Peter Baird takes a look into the crystal ball and assesses

how the teams in Divisions 3 and 4 shape up for the year ahead.

SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEWDIVISION 4

With the bye a thing of the past for Division 4 in 2011, the inclusion of Silvan will bring a new lease of life to the competition. The new kids on the block will be competitive in 2011 and with the inclusion of ex-Vermont premiership player Mark Cullen along with Jarrod Rowe from Lilydale, the Cats will have plenty of experience under their belts. Coach Chris Goodlet will be determined that his team makes an impression early in the year and this may start against one of the favourites in this division in Round 1 when they host South Belgrave in today’s big radio game on 98.1 Eastern FM. The term ‘unfi nished business’ is being bandied around by Nick Cox’s boys from South Belgrave and I genuinely believe that they have identifi ed the areas that they need to improve. They turned their recruiting binoculars to those particular areas, adding Alex Bakens (Knox) and Cameron Smith (Rowville). The Saints were the only team to upset last year’s premier, Templestowe, during the fi nals series and proved that they have the goods to match it with the best. I think they will be the team to beat this year in Division 4. Ferntree Gully was gallant in 2010, but the side’s experienced legs will be another year older in 2011. They led the way in Division 4 last year and have a super group of experienced and young players. Expectations are high for the Gully and they won’t settle for anything short of a premiership.

Canterbury may be the big improver in Division 4 for 2011. The Cobras had a real breakout year in 2010 to fi nd their feet in the EFL and began to string consecutive wins together. On ‘The Huddle’ last Wednesday night, new coach Tony Rowe was ‘up and about’ and suggested thay he believes that they can not only make the fi nal fi ve but also challenge the top teams. The Glen Waverley Hawks have promised so much over the last couple of years and they will continue to be a powerhouse in 2011. The key for the Hawks will be keeping their stars on the park and delivering the results in big games. Unfortunately, I think that the rollercoaster ride of inconsistency between wins and losses will continue this year for both Heathmont and The Basin. Both teams had horror years last year with injuries but are capable of matching it with anyone on their days. Kilsyth will return to Division 4 in 2011 and will be better for having spent a year in a higher division. Surrey Park will be determined to gain some respect in 2011 and climb out of the cellar. The talk coming out of Nunawading is all positive and with a new logo, and a renewed enthusiasm, the future looks promising for the Lions.

Anthony Thomas 200 Games for Chirnside Park

Congratulations to Anthony on achieving this milestone in his football career. Anthony is the second player at Chirnside Park to have played 200 games and joins Glenn Wyngaard in this elite group.

Anthony played his fi rst reserves game for Chirnside Park in round four, 1997 as an under-19s player. He played two reserves games that year before becoming a senior player in 1998.

He has played every year except for 2004 in reaching this signifi cant milestone. During his career, he has captained the reserves side (2008/2009/2011), served on the committee for every year since 2005 and collected a memorable reserves premiership in 2010. While his senior total now sits at 200 games, his junior career at Chirnside Park began in 1985 and adds to his total, putting it at more than 350 club games; a truly outstanding effort.

As can be seen Anthony has been involved with the club not only as a player but as a committee person and is held in high esteem by all for his commitment to helping the club in all aspects. Congratulations, Anthony.

BOUNDARY BANTER BOUNDARY BANTER with Ben Warren-Smith and Ben Waterworth.

Ben Warren-Smith: Take those headphones out of your ear young man.Hello? Are you even listening to me?

Ben Waterworth: Hey, come on, I was just getting into the groove of things.

BWS: I can’t believe you, seriously. The EFL season starts today and you’re listening to tunes. Probably tweeting also.

BW: Us young blokes can handle two things at a time. And you don’t even know what I was listening to!

BWS: Probably some hip-hop rubbish your generation listens to these days.

BW: It was actually a song from your fossilised prime years.

BWS: Something like ‘Everybody’ by Backstreet Boys, no doubt?

BW: First off, that’s just plain embarrassing. Secondly your prime teen years were before the mid 90’s. Try early 80’s.

BWS: I was barely alive then!

BW: Well it’s ‘I’m So Excited’ by the Pointer Sisters.

BWS: Cheese, pure cheese. Why would you be listening to that?

BW: Perhaps because that’s how I truly feel right now – super excited the footy is back and better than ever for season 2011.

BWS: You dug yourself out of a massive hole there Benjamin. But totally agree, cannot wait for this afternoon’s round of footy.

BW: Of course we start off with divisions three and four today, while divisions one and two start next weekend.

BWS: We don’t want to blow all our bullets early, so let’s just focus on three and four for now.

BW: Fair enough my bald-headed friend.

BWS: Oh my God. It’s started already has it, sauce-head?

BW: Couldn’t resist. Division four premier prediction for 2011 please.

BWS: Ferntree Gully will be all guns blazing to return to division three next year, however I really liked the look of South Belgrave at the end of last year and have the feeling the Saints are ready to take the next step. Yourself?

BW: I can’t go past Ferntree Gully Eagles mate. They’re probably the most complete team in division four, a factor that should get them over the line in September.

BWS: What about the new kids on the block – Silvan?

BW: No idea – literally. But one thing I can guarantee is today’s match between the Cats and South Belgrave will be full of plenty of emotion.

BWS: Should be a good crowd too. Only the A-Listers made it out there today, so hope you boys enjoy the free feed.

BW: We will think of you out in the cold as we’re wined and dined.

BWS: Bloody moochers! You prepared to give us your tips for division three Benny-Boy?

BW: Yes Benny-Boy. Forest Hill, Eastern Lions, Ferntree Gully Eagles, Canterbury, Glen Waverley Hawks and South Belgrave – just.

BWS: I concur. It’s funny how we go for the favourites all the time in round one, but I bet we will be proven wrong somewhere this weekend. Normally division two is the tightest of all four groups, but I reckon division three could easily be 2011’s tightest group. Good call/Bad call?

BW: Excellent call. Thorough call. Well-researched call. So many questions to be answered in the third division this season.

BWS: Exactly. Can Doncaster bounce back after last season’s close grand fi nal loss?

BW: Will Boronia rise to glory with a host of big name recruits?

BWS: After moving up a grade, how far can Templestowe go?

BW: Can level four accredited coach Brett Davidson take Chirnside Park to the next level?

BWS: That last question will increase Davo’s ego immensely.

BW: Shaun Kelly-style.

BWS: A 2011 division three premiers tip from your good self please.

BW: Boronia. You?

BWS: North Ringwood.

BW: Interesting, you just can’t see past red, white and black can you? Can they get the start there after this weekend?

BWS: Lock it in; an away win at the start of the year really gets you going.

BW: Couldn’t agree more.

BWS: That’s why the EFL pay me the big dollars.

BW: Coldstream, North Ringwood, Templestowe, Boronia and Mitcham to win this weekend. Agree?

BWS: I’m going for Donny to beat Coldstream otherwise we are on the same page again.

BW: Now, Benjamin.

BWS: Yes, Benjamin.

BW: Even though the EFL players are back doing what they do best on the fi eld, some certain Cleo Bachelor of the Year nominees are back doing what they do best on a Wednesday night on one certain radio station.

BWS: You are the king of shameless self-plugs.

BW: I’ll be here all week.

BWS: It is gripping stuff though. Tune into ‘The Huddle’ every Wednesday night from 6-7pm on 98.1 FM for your mid-week EFL fi x.

BW: We will once again be out to fi nd the best hamburger in the league with Hamburger Hunt. So if you see one of the two of us, or a very large specimen by the name of Peter Baird, or ex-Heathmont colt Dyson Baker strutting around EFL grounds, give us a taste of your burger and we’ll be more than happy to give it a massive plug.

BWS: Any terms or conditions?

BW: They must taste good.

BWS: Nice.

BW: So glad footy’s back – at all levels too.

BWS: Don’t get too cheeky – The BANTER has begun!

SEASON LAUNCH A HITSEASON LAUNCH A HITBen Waterworth for a comprehensive preview of all divisions. It was a fast-paced review that many audience members described as a “horse race” that drew plenty of laughs as the boys managed to cover every single team, their pre-season, recruits and 2011 prospects in less than ten minutes.Montrose coach Troy Simmonds, Ringwood’s new coach Nick Tennant and Balwyn’s man at the helm in Daniel Harford joined Tony Jones for a number of light-hearted stories about AFL and EFL in the years gone by and how things have changed in 2011. According to Tennant, more AFL-style plays will come to the fore this year.“It’s always the way,” he said.“It seems to follow a pattern that the EFL sits a couple of years behind in terms of game style, so we should expect to see more zones and pressure styles this year.”The league also announced that in 2011, a team will be selected from a large number of EFL players who have gone on to play AFL/VFL over the past 50 years.Clubs are also invited to write a short history and nominate individuals who have signifi cantly served their club over the past 50 years, with those individuals to be recognised by the league with awards for services to the game (read more on page 18).League offi cials and clubs alike are excited about the celebrations that will encompass the entire season as the league welcomes new sponsors and clubs alike on board for season 2011.“The concept of “Club” is stronger than ever before with now all but one of our senior clubs maintaining an affi liation with vibrant junior organisations,” Chairman Halbish said.“This is consistent with the league’s aim of providing much more than just a game for those that play, umpire, watch or follow an EFL club.”

Last Wednesday, the Eastern Football League launched the 2011 football season and its 50th year of operations with a well-attended event hosted by Channel Nine’s Tony Jones.Over 300 guests includ-ing club representatives, sponsors and league offi cials packed Ferntree Gully Holden to celebrate the start of the season and recognise the contribution of a number of league stalwarts. “EFL football is cleaner and more disciplined than it has ever been and the skills and standard of play continues to rise,” said EFL chairman Graham Halbish on season launch night.“There is clearly something the community of the east feels very good about in going local for their footy at the EFL.“This will be our 50th year and we intend to take time to recognise some of the individuals that helped build the EFL to be what it is today. Rather than celebrating with one or two signifi cant events, we will recognise the milestone throughout the season with a range of match day and league presentations.”The league’s fi rst secretary, Mr Frank Bibby, was recognised for his signifi cant contribution to the EFL’s foundation, as was Mr Les Ferguson who has become a most recognised fi gure at East Ringwood Football Club. The EFL media team made an appearance, with Radio and Video Producer Shaun Kelly joining members of The Huddle (Wednesday nights at 6pm on 98.1 Radio Eastern) Ben Warren-Smith and

Eastern Football League life member and original EDFL secretary Frank Bibby was honoured at the league’s recent season launch, recognised for his services to the game over the past 50 years. The fi rst secretary of the then Eastern Districts Football League upon the founding of the league in 1962, Mr Bibby is one person who has witnessed 50 years of the Eastern Football League.

Mr Bibby, now 86 and certainly looking fi ghting fi t, began in the role in 1958.

“In 1958 the Croydon Ferntree Gully Football League were looking for a secretary,” he said.

“So I took the job on and that’s where it started.

“In 1962, we were attracting clubs from inner-suburbia, such as Doncaster and Surrey Hills, so the name Croydon-Ferntree Gully just didn’t fi t the new league, so we changed it to the Eastern Districts Football League.”

The name was changed to the Eastern Football League at the end of 1997, which Mr Bibby says he doesn’t mind, “as long as it keeps the name ‘Eastern’”.

As well as secretarial duties throughout the League’s formative years, Frank also served on the Executive Committee of the league throughout the 1960’s, and is one of the oldest living life members of the EFL. He also spent a number of years as President of Fitzroy Football Club in the then VFL, before returning for “one more year” at the EFL in 1980.

Since 1994, the player who is best on ground in the division four grand fi nal is awarded the Frank Bibby Medal.

While Mr Bibby does not attend many matches as he would like to, he says he still enjoys the game as much as he did in those formative years.

BIBBY & FERGUSON REWARDEDBIBBY & FERGUSON REWARDEDThe league incorporated just one division at that stage, and a very different list of teams.

“From memory, I think there were 12 teams, each fi elding fi rsts, seconds and under 18s,” Mr Bibby said.

With his great-grandson currently playing EFL juniors, the Bibby legacy will no doubt continue its presence in the EFL for many years to come.

League stalwart Les Ferguson was also honoured at the season launch, recognised for his services to the game as a premiership player, committee member and loyal supporter of East Ringwood. Mr Ferguson was also recognised for his role in pioneering the EFL radio coverage in the 1980s.

He introduced the Friday preview and Sunday review programs, with the Sunday program still running on 98.1FM Radio Eastern in 2011. The Friday preview now appears on the EFL website. Les was also present for the fi rst fi nals broadcast and has been instrumental in the development of many media team members.

On season launch night, Mr Ferguson chose to single out one of these media team members he recalls most vividly for his talent and determination to make it in the industry; the late Clinton Grybas.

“He showed so much promise in the time he spent at Radio Eastern,” Mr Ferguson said.

“It is such an honour to be rewarded with something like this, especially having worked with so many wonderful people.”

Les can still be heard as part of Radio Eastern’s Saturday sport coverage and the EFL would like to warmly congratulate Les on his many years of service.

The Stats Bench welcomes all Eastern Footballer readers back for the 2011 season as the EFL celebrates 50 years. The Stats Bench in 2011 will feature a head-to-head tally for all matches as well as a brief look at a number of teams across the divisions.

DIVISION 3 ROUND 1Wins Wins Draws

Coldstream 6 Doncaster 4 –

Whitehorse Pioneers 2 North Ringwood 2 –

Templestowe 11 Warrandyte 11 –

Boronia 2 Chirnside Park 0 –

Mitcham 32 Ringwood 39 –

Last time Mitcham played Ringwood was in 2006 when both clubs were in Division 1. The Tigers start their fourth season in Division 3 hoping to improve on last season’s fi ve wins and two draws. Ringwood’s four wins in 2010 would usually be enough to stay in Division 2, but not last year, so they face their fi rst ever season in third Division. (All previous matches between these teams were in Division 1).Interestingly, six of the 10 teams in Division 3 this year have previously played in Division 1.Near neighbours Templestowe and Warrandyte resume battle after a couple of seasons' break.

This week's winner will take the lead in the head to head stakes.

DIVISION 4 ROUND 1Wins Wins Draws

The Basin* 19 Forest Hill 25 –

Eastern Lions 12 Surrey Park 6 –

Ferntree Gully 12 Kilsyth 25 –

Nunawading 0 Glen Waverley Hawks 2 –

Silvan 0 South Belgrave 0 –

* Records slightly incomplete

Not too many teams have met in all four divisions. Ferntree Gully and Kilsyth’s rivalry extends back to 1969 in Division 1, through part of the 70s and 80s in Division 2, part of the 90s in Division 3 and apart from last year since 2003 in Division 4.Any more than 40 meetings makes "traditional rivals" in my book so on that basis, The Basin and Forest Hill qualify. Their rivalry is spread over three divisions since 1970 including the 1984 Division 3 Grand Final, and now extends to 28 seasons. Silvan returns to the EFL after a 46 year break and will meet South Belgrave for the fi rst time in the EFL in the “mountainside derby” today.By Noel McPhee

COACHING CHANGESCOACHING CHANGESWhile 2010 brought more coaching changes across the divisions that most could get their heads around, one would think the latest off-season would be a little less head-spinning. Whilst it was a little more tame than last year, a few changes still took place that are certainly worth noting.

Brett Davidson makes his return to Chirnside Park in division three having taken over the helm from Jason de Graaf. The highly-credentialed Davidson will head up a young Panthers side that is looking to establish itself fi rmly in division three.

John O’Brien has stepped up to fi ll the top job at Warrandyte following the club’s tragic loss of Neale Carroll in February of this year. O’Brien, a life member of the club and former coach of Upper Ferntree Gully, now faces the unenviable task of trying to replicate the Bloods’ fi nals appearances of the last two years in the cutthroat division three.

At Canterbury, Tony Rowe will move up from his role as reserves coach to take the reins of the senior side. With a young side at his disposal, Rowe will not only be looking to stamp his own presence on division three but also cement the reputation of Canterbury in its third EFL season.

Silvan welcomes former Lilydale star Chris Goodlet as its senior coach in its inaugural EFL season. It will be his second year at the helm of the Cats but his fi rst as an EFL coach as they enter the competition today. Judging by Silvan’s presence at the recent EFL season launch, they will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in 2011.

The Glassborrow name returns to the EFL this season as Patrick takes charge at The Basin. The Bears were shattered to have missed the fi nals in 2010 and will be looking to make amends, starting with their hosting of Forest Hill today.

What was your fi rst job in journalism?I was very fortunate, my fi rst ever job was as a cadet journalist at 3AW. I’d like to think they recognized very raw talent – but in fact I think it was because I chained myself to the newsbooth.

What led you to want to become involved in the media? The respect, the glamour, the better tables at restaurants. Still waiting.

Who do you admire in the media industry? Many, but the fi rst that comes to mind is Laurie Oakes. It’s not just the enormous number of signifi cant stories he’s broken, but his attention to detail in every story he airs.

What has been your toughest story to report on and why?Going to Aceh after the Boxing Day tsunami was the most taxing, both physically and emotionally. The lack of food and water and the sight of so many bodies took its toll. But none of us complained as every day we were interviewing people who had lost everything and in many cases everyone they had.

Are there any stories that you have reported on that really stick in your memory? There are many that stand out because of tragedy, but the one I like to recall is going to Copenhagen for Mary’s wedding. I thought it would be a week and a half of fun – as it turned out I’ve rarely fi led so many stories. The level of interest was extraordinary. But nice to tell a tale with a happy ending for a change.

Who have been some of your favourite people you have interviewed in your job?I normally run a mile from “celebrity” interviews, but: George Clooney was charming, Patrick Swayze a bloke you’d like to have a beer with and Gene

Q & AQ & A

Simmons from Kiss – well most of what he said was unprintable but hilarious.

Is there one person or group you would like to interview or report on in your career?I’d like to have had the opportunity to interview Saddam Hussein, and ask “In hindsight, if you could have done things differently…”

Do you ever fi nd some people are diffi cult to interview, and how do you get around this?Politicians who relentlessy stick to the script regardless of the question. Surely even they get bored with the same rehearsed lines. We do.

Have you ever been in any dangerous situations due to a story you were covering?Yes, any place starting with “B”. I’ve covered wars in Baghdad and Beirut, and been shot at in Bangkok. I even get twitchy going to Ballarat now.

How many hours can you sometimes work in a week? I’ve never sat down to work it out, but there are times, particularly when on assignment overseas, where I would average a couple of hours sleep a night. But boy those two hours were bliss.

You are obviously involved in TV, have you ever been involved in other forms of media, and what have you found are the major differences?Radio was my fi rst love. I worked at 3AW for years, as well as RRR and FOX. The main difference is in TV, you really have to wear pants. Radio, it’s optional.

EDIE MEDAL – DIVISION THREEMatt Price continued his stellar run in the division three best and fairest award, walking away with his fi fth Edie Medal (2003, 2005, 2008/09/10) and his third in a row. Price had his most dominant year in the award, polling 32 votes to fi nish four votes clear of two-time Edie Medallist Dean Grice from Boronia. It took

Price until round 15 to take lead of the count, with the Coldstream captain polling in fi ve of his team’s last six games to help him to the title – his sixth league best and fairest medal in his career having collected the James Medal in 2001. Polling in 12 games for the season and recording nine best on grounds, Price credited a change of coach in the off-season, with more focus on fi tness, on his increased fi tness and performances in 2010. “We turned up with a new coach this year and a new philosophy – and he (Ellis) is massive on fi tness. I went into the preseason pretty hard, dropped a few kilo’s, and it is the fi ttest I have been a few years and it has obviously showed,” he said on Chandler Medal night. Price was not only recognised by the umpires in winning the best and fairest medal, but also the division three coaches, being named captain of the SEN Team of the Year as well. He believes being captain sometimes helps with being seen and heard by the umpires. “I was named as captain, and I have been captain of the club for 8 years –which I am not doing next year, I am stepping back due to family reasons – but when you are captain you do get to shake hands with the umpires, do the coin toss and get in their face a bit … you do what you can and as a midfi elder you are in the face of the umpires.” Whilst the club had a change of coach, they were still unable to break into the top four. Again leaving their run too late, Coldstream had a better second half of

the season, but Price thought the changes at the club with Ellis taking over would take more than a season to take effect. “I always thought when Sean came on board that his second and third years would be our most successful at the club. That way he could look at the division and see what we needed to build as a fi rst year coach, as it is fairly hard. He has now seen that, and with a good preseason and a few new recruits we can go all the way … that is the aim,” Price said. It was not the best of starts for Coldstream in 2010, suffering a 100-point defeat at the hands of Mitcham in round one of the season. The side’s inconsistency was evident when the teams met again in the second half of the year, plus the fact Coldstream were the only team in the second half of the year to defeat eventual premiers Upper FTG. “It was our downfall, we were very inconsistent,” Price said.“Round one was the 100-point thumping and then we played them on the return and beat them by 90 odd points so it was nearly a 200-point turn around. We matched it with Doncaster, Upper FTG and Nth Ringwood on the way home, and in the end Upper FTG won it, and were deserved premiers. You have to take something out of the end of year results, and you need to play more consistently to win it.” In closing Price had a number of people to thank on the night. “My brother is here tonight – he will tell you. He doesn’t mind being in the face of people so you will probably meet him later. The players that I play with, we are not that consistent but hopefully we can turn that around, and if we can get that going, hopefully we will give it a good tilt.”

JAMES MEDAL – DIVISION FOURKane Maghamez capped off a success season not only for himself but for his club when he won back to back James Medals. The Templestowe Dockers midfi elder/forward won the division four best and fairest award in similar style to 2009, but the major difference in 2010 was that he did not have to share the award (like he did with

Brendon Murphy in 2009). He polled in nine games for the year, and had four best on grounds, winning the title by just two votes from fellow grand fi nal player Pryce Dalgleish from FTG Eagles. Winning back to back awards was a big achievement for Maghamez, especially with his side featuring in the top fi ve all season, and eventually taking out the premiership.“It is a great privilege,” he said.“This year has been a really good year with all the guys and to win a premiership that means more than anything – (more) than winning the individual awards. It is good to have a few of the boys here tonight for a bit of support.” It has been a rollercoaster ride for the Templestowe players and supporters over recent years, experiencing the emotions of relegation and a premiership within two years. Relegation from division three at the end of the 2008 season gave the Dockers the steely resolve to bounce back as they have in recent years. “We needed to get a group together that was going to take us forward and we recruited really well this year,” Maghamez said.“We picked up some players like Paul Eccles, Emil Ware, Jamie Bain and Matt Groat which provided the team with a good spine. We fi nished off the year well last year, and this year I thought we would have a good crack at it and ended up coming away with the fl ag which was really good.”

After assuming a role up forward in his early years at Templestowe, recent years have seen Maghamez enjoy roles mixed in the midfi eld and up forward. His change of role was helped even more this year by the recruitment of century goal kicker Paul Eccles. “You can’t say too much about Eccles, the way he plays is so strong – you kick him the ball and he wins it 95 per cent of the time so it is great having him down there. We also have Groaty and Ryan Bain that plays down there a little bit so we have had a lot of forward power this year.” Not only was Maghamez the division four best and fairest winner, but he also gained selection in the team of the year on the ball. He had a laugh about his position in the side with fellow SEN Team of the Year player and teammate Ryan Bain. “I was having a bit of a joke with Ryan Bain just before, and I don’t know how I got onball as he (Ryan) played most of the year there, and I played most of the year forward but happy to take it though.” There were a number of people on the night that Maghamez wanted to thank. “I want to thank Browny – he has done a great job obviously with all the players this year. I want to thank all the teammates from the premiership team. Also Greg Tremewen – he is an unbelievable president, no one gets more excited in the games than he does – it was quite good when he had the game over hat on in the grand fi nal at three-quarter time. I would like to thank everyone down at the club – it is a great club play at and I am happy to be there for the next few years.”

50 YEAR NOMINATIONS50 YEAR NOMINATIONSAs the EFL moves into its 50th year of operations, we are provided not only with the opportunity to celebrate what the future brings, but also the events and individuals that have shaped the league and made it what it is today. Rather than celebrating with one or two signifi cant events, the league will recognise the milestone throughout the season across a range of match day and league events.

With 2011 being the 50th year of operations for the Eastern Football League, we would like to invite your club to contribute to this historic milestone.

The league will compile a collection of club histories to be mounted and presented to each individual club as well as appearing at EFL House. These histories will also form part of a weekly retrospective in the EFL’s premier print publication, The Eastern Footballer.

A form will be available on www.efl .org.au for you and your club to nominate an individual you deem to be a true stalwart of the club who has had a signifi cant impact upon football and the club over the past 50 years. All nominations are welcome and will be considered by the EFL 50th Year Steering Committee and recognitions made for services to the game.

As in recent years, clubs have also been invited to nominate senior players under the age of 21 for the Leader Young Gun Award. Clubs have been contacted with more information. Please send your nominations to lwood@efl .org.au

MEDIA COVERAGEThis year, The Huddle will continue in its usual time slot at 6pm on Wednesdays on 98.1FM Radio Eastern. Ben Warren-Smith, Ben Waterworth, Dyson Baker and Peter Baird returned this week. This Wednesday, April 6, the boys will look into the crystal ball to preview divisions one and two. Dyson’s Dish will also return, as will Hamburger Hunt, the search for the EFL’s best burger. The Jason Derulo award for the greatest “head-wobbler” is back, along with a new segment, Frosty’s EFL Thermometer; who will run hot and who will be cold this week?

The team’s tipping competition will also return with the boys offering their certainties in the tipping stakes each week. They will also broadcast live from Hog’s Breath Café Knox during the year.

Always on the lookout for new ideas, the boys welcome your thoughts to huddle@efl .org.au. You can read

more from The Huddle’s Ben Warren-Smith and Ben Waterworth in this week’s Boundary Banter column on page 7.

EFL GAMEDAYThe broadcast will kick off at 1pm each Saturday with all the ins and outs from the previous week’s matches, tips and information. The Saturday ‘Match of the Day’ broadcast runs from 1.30pm-5pm, including fi nal reserves scores, around the grounds progress scores and AFL progress scores. This week, the team will be at Silvan for the “mountainside derby” clash between Silvan and South Belgrave.

The football roundup begins at 5pm and will feature fi nal scores, reviews and reports from around the grounds reporters until 6pm. There will be a full roundup of scores and ladders between 5.50pm and 6pm on Saturday.

EFL SUNDAYThe Sunday morning footy show kicks off from 10am and runs until midday, reviewing all senior divisions, interviewing players and coaches and including ladders, news and discussion. Radio and Video Program Manager Shaun Kelly will again host this program in 2011.

SENThe EFL will again return to the airwaves on SEN 1116 on Thursday nights from 10pm to keep listeners up to date with the latest EFL news and previews of the weekend’s matches.

WANT TO JOIN THE MEDIA TEAM?The EFL media team is a dedicated group of volunteers who work together each week to produce the league’s radio coverage, football record and website content. The EFL media team gives volunteers an opportunity to experience different areas of the media and gives them hands-on experience, which is especially advantageous for students and other individuals looking to forge a career in the sports media. The team also includes a number of people who simply love EFL football and enjoy being a part of the team.

If you are interested in joining the EFL media team in 2011, contact Media Manager Lauren Wood on lwood@efl .org.au, providing your resume and/or background information.

23 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2011

UMPIRES CORNERRULE CHANGES FOR 2011This season sees a few changes to some match day rules in the EFL.

ADVANTAGE RULEThe fi rst is the way the ‘advantage rule’ is now implemented. It is now totally the player’s discretion, as to whether he takes the advantage after being awarded a free kick.

“Where the fi eld Umpire intends to or has signalled that they intend to award a free kick to a player, the fi eld Umpire may, instead of awarding the free kick, allow play to continue if the player of the team who receives the free kick has taken the advantage.”

When a free kick is awarded the player receiving the free kick or a teammate of his will elect whether they wish to take the advantage. If they do so the fi eld umpire will quickly call advantage and play will continue. The umpire can no longer recall an advantage, therefore the player has chosen to take the advantage and is legally tackled he will have deemed to have had prior opportunity and therefore can be penalised.

If a free kick is awarded and the player receiving the free kick or a team mate stops or pauses immediately after the whistle is blown, the umpire will reset the mark and the free kick will be taken from where the infringement occurred.

Also, if a player elects to take the advantage and he is within scoring distance and the siren goes to end the quarter, the umpire will not recall it and give the player another kick from where the infringement occurred.

TIME ON AT THE BOUNCEIn senior matches last year, many quarters last well in excess of 35 minutes. This season, the clock will only stop at fi eld bounces when the umpire blows time off. The umpire will blow time off in circumstances when there is a delay in play, such as many players over the ball. For the past few seasons the clocked has stopped every time a fi eld bounce was called. We have undertaken this change to reduce the length of quarters. Time on in 2011 will be added:

1. When directed to by the umpire (by blowing the whistle and raising one arm above his/her head);

2. When the umpire signals a point or goal has been scored; and

3. When an umpire signals the ball is out of bounds or out of bounds on the full.

This change was trialled during a division one senior game in 2011 and looks likely to reduce the length of quarters by about 2 minutes, without affecting the integrity of the game.

DELIBERATE BEHINDSIn 2011 the EFL will introduce the AFL’s deliberate rushed behind rule. This rule was introduced in the AFL in 2009 and the EFL has purposely not introduced it to allow us to monitor its implementation in the AFL. We are confi dent now that any confusion over when the free kick should be paid has been resolved and that all stakeholders in the game are appreciative of the fact that blatant rushed behinds when under no pressure are not in the spirit of the game.

A free kick will be awarded against the player from the offending team who intentionally kicks, handballs or forces the football over the attacking team’s goal or behind lines. Examples can be seen in as the Joel Bowden kick in/rushed behind and some of the Hawthorn GF 2008 rushed behinds. In assessing whether a free kick shall be awarded the umpire shall give the benefi t of the doubt to the defender. The free kick shall only be awarded when the defender is under no pressure and clearly elects to cause the ball to cross the goal or behind line.

Where a defending ruckman taps the ball over the goal line, on the full, from a ruck contest it will be deemed a deliberate rushed behind. The attacking ruckman is not penalized in similar circumstances as he is attempting to score.

In introducing these adjustments we are confi dent it will further enhance EFL football.

EASTERN RANGES V OAKLEIGH CHARGERS

Eastern Ranges had a tough start to their season with a disappointing 103-point loss to Oakleigh Chargers at Visy Park in North Carlton on Sunday.

Jonathon Patton impressed, kicking fi ve goals for the Ranges to be their best player ahead of Ben Slattery and Patrick Lawlor who both played signifi cant roles. The Ranges will look for a better performance when they face Western Jets at Visy Park from 10am this Sunday.

Goal Kickers: J. Patton 5, J. Williams , A. Greenwood, N. Sargent

Best Players: J. Patton, B. Slattery, P. Lawlor, A. Greenwood, L. Cope, L. Palmer

The Ranges’ jumper presentation night was held last week with former Eastern Ranges and current AFL players Ben Griffi ths and Kade Simpson in attendance. An enjoyable night was had by all.

The 2011 leaders of the Eastern Ranges have also been announced as Jonathon Patton (Captain) & Alex Greenwood (Vice Captain).Jonathon Patton was the 2010 best and fairest winner which was a signifi cant achievement given that he was part of the bottom age group. This achievement has been recorded on three previous occasions by players who have all gone on to play at AFL level. These players are Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn), Heath Hocking (Essendon) and Rory Sloane (Adelaide). He represented both the AIS and Vic Metro squads last year and received the prestigious 2010 AFL Life Members Scholarship. As a result, Jonathon will receive a $5,000 educational grant from the AFL Life Members Association. The AFL Life Members Scholarship was named after Alan Schwab and Jack Collins; both of whom contributed enormously to the AFL Life Members Association.Alex Greenwood is currently a member of the Vic Metro training squad. An inside onballer, he has shown leadership qualities both on and off the fi eld.

LYSTERFIELD STORYLYSTERFIELD STORYThis weekend sees Lysterfi eld enter the junior competition as a stand-alone club for the fi rst time. Its fi rst jumper presentation was held on Friday night in what was a well-attended and enjoyable event for players and parents alike.

The Eastern Footballer caught up with Lysterfi eld president Steve Ketzer to discuss the progress of the club and how things came about following a long association with Knox.

EF: What were you able to learn through having the combined sides with Knox over recent years?SK: We have learnt a lot from our friends at Knox JFC. They have provided endless guidance and advice along the journey. Brad McNay was on Knox’s committee for 4 years learning the operational and administrative working of the club. They have a great social and family orientated culture which we are trying to emulate. Things like their ANZAC games and recognition of the ANZAC spirit we will be doing something similar at Lysterfi eld. They have offered little tips to ensure things go smoothly.

Are the players looking forward to wearing their jumpers for the fi rst time in round one, and offi cially being the Lysterfi eld Junior FC? You bet – there is a sense of anticipation that that they are part of something new and exciting. No doubt when the boys return to pre-season training the anticipation will grow. Certainly the parents are looking forward to seeing the Lysterfi eld Wolves take to the ground for the fi rst time wearing the teal, grey and black, and hearing the supporters yelling Go Wolves and the singing of the club song will all be very special.

How did the idea/concept for the jumper and logo develop? There was an extensive process taking a couple of months calling for submissions and ideas. This attracted more than 70 designs from the members and also the broader community. This was short listed to 10 and the members voted on the name and logo. The wolf name and logo was a resounding winner. The jumper colours changed a bit from the original design based on feedback and also advise from the EFL (to ensure colours didn’t clash with existing strips). The original colours and design focused more on stripes and

more traditional guernseys. The teal, grey and black is a far more modern design and has been widely accepted & embraced by the members

What are some of the clubs aims for 2011? To ensure the kids have a good time playing footy is our number one aim. To create an environment and culture where families can come together and enjoy either watching or playing junior football.

How many sides are you aiming to fi eld? We will be fi elding four teams; Under 9’s to Under 12’s. The view is to grow the club a team a year until we fi eld a team in every age group of the competition in 2015.

Is there a buzz around the club? There is an air of anticipation and positive energy driving us toward getting ourselves organised for round one. There is a large group of willing parents to create a great club. There has been a mountain of work to get the club ready for our fi rst season and still more to do, but the thing we are looking forward to most is when the kids run out onto the ground for the fi rst time wearing the Wolves jumper.

More information relating to the club and other activities can be found on www.lysterfi eldjfc.org.au

BORONIA: Welcome to season 2011 from all at The Hawks. On behalf of the entire Boronia football club, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all new recruits and their families. I am sure you all will enjoy your time with the club. Congratulations on the appointment of all coaches and captains for 2011, let’s get behind them and show your full support. Today we host and welcome Chirnside Park in what should be a good test for both sides. After a long pre-season and a couple of gruelling practice matches I know everyone can’t wait to get into the real stuff, so hopefully we can kick off the season with three big wins.Don’t forget after the game today is the player auction so stay back and bid for your favourite players. The annual Full Moon party is on after round two so make sure you fl uro up. Round three will be the fi rst President’s lunch and with Barry Michael as guest speaker it is sure to be a sell out so See Cam, Pip or Tim for tickets. GO HAWKAS!

CHIRNSIDE PARK: After fi ve months of preseason training we kick off round one against Boronia, and with a revamped coaching panel, new look senior team, strong reserves team and young Colts side we have prepared ourselves well for the 2011 season. Congratulations to Scott Hamill on his appointed as senior captain and Anthony Thomas as reserves captain. Anthony he will play his 200th senior – reserve game for the club today; he is the second player at the club to achieve this milestone and joins Glenn Wyngaard in this elite group. Good luck to the three sides as we strive for an opening round win to get our season off to a good start. To our players and members, we are running a “hypnosis” function at the club tonight starting at 8.00pm - $ 20.00 entrance fee, further info on our website. Our President’s luncheon will be held on 9th April at the clubrooms, please confi rm your booking as soon as possible.

COLDSTREAM: Aaand we’re off!! The smell of liniment is wafting through the air, looove that liniment, and the withdrawal symptoms will soon disappear. Once again I will be sniffi ng around for gossip and anything funny, strange or stupid to write about. So look out, it could be you we’ll be reading about soon. It’s been a hectic pre-season for everyone and we’re all champing at the bit to get the show on the road. Supporters will notice that some of the old faces are no longer on the fi eld, replaced by a whole bunch of fresh faced younger recruits. The club has made a conscious effort to rejuvenate the playing list and so far it is looking like it will pay off. Pre-season form has been good and expectations are high that this squad will deliver the goods. The Committee has worked tirelessly since the end of last season. We now have a new Treasurer and it has increased in size. If the committee’s efforts and commitment are transfused to the playing group, look out we’re in for a bumper season. To those that have left the club, we wish you well in your future endeavours. To the retirees, thanks

for the memories and don’t forget to show your faces around the place. To the newcomers, welcome and have a great season. The season opener is against Doncaster at the Fortress. Great contests between the two last season and this should be no exception. Best of luck to everyone. GO! GO! COUGARS!!

DONCASTER: Welcome all to our fi rst game of the year which has us away to Coldstream. Good luck to seniors coach Adam Bester and team, reserves coach Craig Williams and team and Colts coaches Darren Antrim & Gav Martin and team. Also, a big thanks to President Paul Valkenburg and committee for all off season work. Welcome and thank you to major sponsors – United, Bendigo Bank, Eagle Hire, Ray White, Colby Southern & BEST Travel. Good luck to all for the coming season. Sponsorship and Membership Packages available now, check web site for details. Hang around tonight for whatever.

MITCHAM: Walker Park is the venue for Mitcham's 74th contest with old foe Ringwood. Though we haven't seen them for a year or three, the Tigers haven't beaten the Redbacks since fi rst division days. However, a solid preseason, smart recruiting and impressive practice match form should give the coaching staff every confi dence for a positive start to season 2011. Good luck to our coaches Scott, John and Glenn, all in their second year with the clipboard. FTR: Played 73, Mitcham 32, Ringwood 41.

NORTH RINGWOOD: Firstly, let me offer a big welcome back to all Saints supporters in expectation of an exciting season ahead. Most members are aware that our immediate past president, Kevin Smith, stood down after serving at the club for the past six years. On behalf of all at NRFC I thank Kevin and Michelle for their loyalty, commitment and generosity to the club over that period. Special thanks are due to Climate Control Insulation who are taking a break from major sponsorship after fi ve years. Director John Shinnick, who remains as a general sponsor, has always been a great supporter of NRFC. I would like to welcome John Fautley Motors from Car City in Ringwood as our new major sponsor. We appreciate his support and generosity. If any NRFC members or friends want a good quality used car, please call John for some great deals. Another new sponsor is Airmaster. Airmaster is one of the largest commercial air conditioning service companies in Australia. It is with much pleasure that we welcome the company and its owner, Noel Courtney, on board. This year, we had the usual pre-season diffi culty locating training grounds but were lucky enough to secure the use of a local school oval. This gave the boys the opportunity to run and train hard over the break and it was satisfying to see the new recruits settle in so well. Good luck to Moyley, Brad and Dallas. We look forward to some really exciting footy. Today will hopefully begin our season success. Go Saints!

RINGWOOD: The start of another football season sees the club ready to tackle third division for the fi rst time in its history. A busy off season resulted in us appointing one of our favourite sons and previous senior best and fairest winner as senior coach in Nick Tennant. Nick returns to the club after 12 years in which he had coaching stints with three other clubs within the EFL. The club is very pleased to have Nick return as senior coach and are confi dent with his coaching experience and local knowledge making him the right person to guide our young side back to success. We warmly welcome Nick and his family back to Ringwood and hope it is an enjoyable and successful period in his football career. We also welcome back ex-Ringwood captains in Noddy O'Neill and Smooth Parker who are returning to the club as assistants to Nick and the club are rapt to have them back at Jubilee Park. The club thank all our existing sponsors who are again on board in 2011 and we look forward to working with you again. We welcome our two new major sponsors in MCG Windows & Doors (jumper sponsor) and Trusteel Fabrications (shorts sponsor). We thank you for your support and hope you enjoy being part of our club and that it is a long and successful association. Today’s opening game sees us venture to Mitcham to take on an old rival from years gone by and past glory days in Division 1. We've always had a healthy relationship as rivals and look forward to resuming hostilities today. Good luck to all three sides and let’s hope we can kick the season off on a winning note. Tonight in the rooms commencing at 7pm we have our fi rst social event for the year and a live band will be performing. Cost is $10 per head which includes entertainment and fi nger food with drinks at bar prices. We encourage everyone to get down and support the club and enjoy the start of what we hope is an exciting year for the mighty Redbacks.

TEMPLESTOWE: Welcome everyone to Templestowe Football Club for season 2011. Today sees the unfurling of the 2010 Division 4 Premiership fl ag played out against league favourites, Ferntree Gully. It was a huge win for us that will be remembered for some time. To cap off a fabulous year for the club, Kane Maghamez won the 4th division best and fairest award, making this a back to back win for the champion. Well done, Kane and congratulations. We welcome Warrandyte Football Club today for the playing of the Yarra Cup, a traditional match set up many years ago between the two rival clubs. Good luck to both sides in what promises to be a great match. To our new Colts team – our fi rst for a number of years – we also welcome you to the club and wish you success. To all of our supporters, a very big welcome back to the club for the year. Please show your support by buying a 2011 Club 250 membership. For any information about Club 250 please see Paul Hay or Russell Smith.

WARRANDYTE: Well....... We have fi nally made it to season 2011. The club has had an interesting pre-

season that has thrown up many challenges that have impacted us both on the fi eld and off. After the tragic loss of Neale ‘Cowboy’ Carroll, the club and playing group have rallied around our new senior coach John O’Brien. The club thanks John for stepping into the role and we consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have someone of John’s ability to lead our young playing list. John is a life member of both the EFL and the Warrandyte Football Club and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position, we know he will give 100 per cent and expects the same from everyone at Warrandyte! Let’s get behind him! We also welcome back Reserves coach Ash Grybas and new Colts coach Gareth Woodcock. Gareth is a well-respected EFL individual who comes to us from Heathmont FC. Heathmont’s loss is our gain and we are very happy to have Gareth on board and looking forward to him developing the next generation of Warrandyte footballers. Today we renew our rivalry with Templestowe when we battle for the Yarra Cup! They seem to have some momentum up after last year’s D4 success and we will need to be on our guard in all three grades to ensure we get the season off to a winning start! Thanks again to all our players, supporters, sponsors and volunteers for their efforts over the pre-season, however the real stuff starts today and three wins would be a great way to begin our 2011 campaign. Remember to get back to the club for a social drink and match awards after today’s games. GO BLOODS!

WHITEHORSE PIONEERS: A big welcome to the new season and in particular all new players to the club. In one of the biggest achievements over the summer, the club has seen progress made for a revamp of the facilities at Springfi eld Park and we look forward to continuing working with council on bringing the plans to fruition. On fi eld, we have been fortunate to once again fi eld an Under 18 side, made up predominantly from players from our junior affi liate club – Whitehorse Colts, and we look forward to having these players associated with our club for many years ahead. We have also been able to re- sign all sponsors from the previous year and once again our major sponsor, LP Bodyworks is on board for their 8th year as our major sponsor, our thanks again to Morry and the crew at LP Bodyworks. We also welcome on board a new sponsor in Barclays Real Estate in Box Hill North and welcome their support. Best of luck to all three sides this weekend and many thanks to our valued sponsors for their continued support - Robinson Gill Lawyers, Pizza Heart, All Range Steel, Miafi ora Motors, Integrated Freight Solutions, KBH Partners, Elastoplast, Box Hill Physiotherapy, Schweppes, Be your Best Chiropractic, R, Innswood Constructions, Harp of Erin Hotel, IGA Licensed Grocer - Kerrimuir, Accurate Bricklaying, Roundabout Meats, Boags Draught, Muder Architects, A1 Offi ce Fitouts, Cygnett, P Smith Plumbing, Hoath Print and the Corkman Irish Pub.

Pre-season started in early November and the boys got stuck into training they knew they had a job to do. With some of our under 18’s climbing the ranks to the seniors and a few new guys, the boys have been training hard since then. Our boys have had a couple of practice matches and they were happy with the results. We are proud to say we have Brent King again in 2011 as our head coach, Paul Capper as our reserves coach and Mick McGrath as our Colts coach. Players in all teams will go out in round one in a new style of jumper thanks to Ray Abley Professionals Real Estate. During the off season we installed lights on oval two at a cost of $130,000, new undercover shelters will be installed next week at a cost of $20,000 and this week we have had approval from council for a new coach/ timekeeper’s box, to be started in the coming weeks. Our number one ticket holders for the 2011 season are Sue McMillan, Mayor of Knox and John Surridge from the Bendigo Bank Ferntree Gully. The committee, players, coaches, support staff and supporters would like to thank our sponsors, Ray Abley Real Estate, Bendigo Bank Ferntree Gully, Demak Timber, POOLS R US, and Ferntree Gully Honda just to mention a few. 2011 launches a new breed of EAGLES!FOREST HILL: After making fi nals last year for the fi rst time in ages the club is looking forward to a bigger and better 2011. you'll jump on board for a huge 2011. Social memberships are still available from the club. See any committee member or player for details and the President’s Club is back, bigger and better. Good luck to all the boys today, let’s get season 2011 off to a fl yer.PARK ORCHARDS: It’s history in the making for Park Orchards as we play our fi rst ever game in the EFL. There is a real air of excitement and anticipation as all those months of planning come to fruition when the Colts run out in the fi rst round today. The coaching group of Tony Weeks (Colts) and Peter Nicholson (Senior) and the team management group for the Sharks has worked tirelessly over the summer months to attract the required number of boys and to set them on their transition from junior football to senior ranks. We welcome our major sponsor AIRMASTER AUSTRALIA which has signed up to the Sharks for three years. Noel Courtney (Managing Director) has been a long time fi nancial supporter of junior football in Park Orchards, and we are delighted and indeed fortunate to now have him now backing the new senior club. Park Orchards is looking forward to getting to know the other clubs in the EFL, and as we do battle with them on the fi eld, we will know that we are playing in the premier local football competition in the eastern suburbs, if not all of metropolitan Melbourne. GO SHARKS!SILVAN: As the Silvan FC enters its 90th year we embark on a new journey in the EFL. The club is celebrating its fi rst home game with a Sponsors & Life Members luncheon commencing at 12:30pm. Australian Cricketer & SEN1116 co-host Bryce McGain will host the luncheon, Bryce is also a three-time senior B&F winner at the club and a member of the team of the century. In the off season the committee & coaches have been working extremely hard to prepare for the 2011 season. The club has recruited strongly with around 20 new players to the club with a good blend of older and younger players. Training throughout the pre-season has been brilliant with consistent numbers throughout. With the move to the EFL the club has secured a number of new sponsors which will complement our existing and loyal sponsors. Round one at the club will fi nish off with a karaoke night commencing around 7:30pm so if you’re up for chat and a few tunes come along. The Colts are still light on numbers so any 17-18 year olds out there wanting to play Aussie Rules who are maybe not getting much of a run where they are please contact coach Hugh Stern on 0412 845 271. There are no fees just the cost of uniform and the club supplies playing jumper. The Basin Football Club would like to thank our three major sponsors in Bendigo Bank, Alchester IGA and Zagame’s Boronia for again providing support for the club. All three sponsors are community focused which is a great fi t for our community club. Please support our sponsors who all provide great services in their respective businesses.
