Radius was specifi cally developed for the packaging sector and together with its associated Business Intelligence system it gives Firstan a management information system that can grow with the company as it expands.

By linking its production hardware and software systems with the Radius system, Firstan has seen increased effi ciency and faster sales enquiry responses, with staff able to view live reports across a range of business and management topics. The ERP system simplifi es management tasks and handles advanced analysis and reporting requirements seamlessly and effi ciently.

Established in 1978, Firstan now employs 149 people and produces more than 500 million folding cartons each year at its premises in Godmanchester, which is about eight miles from Cambridge.

Replacing a Bespoke System

Originally Firstan had developed a bespoke SQL based MIS inhouse over a 20-year period, but as the company expanded it started to look for a more comprehensive enterprise solution with greater functionality, integrated data handling capabilities and the potential for JDF compliance.

Paul Murden, currently the IT manager, oversaw a lot of the development of the original system. “We outgrew it,” he says. ”We’re manufacturers at the end of the day and trying to keep up by developing your own software isn’t the best use of resources. So we replaced it with EFI Radius.”

The Firstan staff worked closely with EFI’s specialist team throughout to ensure a successful transition to Radius. Richard Green, senior implementations consultant at EFI Radius, was the project manager for the Firstan implementation. “He worked very closely with us, and it would have been much more diffi cult without him,” said Tom Donaghey, former IT manager. “You can’t take a big ERP live easily, but Richard made it as smooth as possible.”

Linking the Processes

Since 2010 Firstan has used information from the Arden WEBcnx system to help prepare estimates on the Radius system, based on the CAD data for the cartons.

“The Arden system is very much a workfl ow tool and it’s browser based,” says Murden. “The Radius system is data storage and manipulation. The workfl ow lets us set people tasks and alert them as to when things need doing. With the integration into Radius it saves a lot of double entry. Previously we had to transfer information manually and there were mistakes.” Now the information is transferred directly, with no re-keying. “An order is raised in WEBcnx, passes directly into the CAD system and straight into Radius without anyone touching it, which greatly reduces the chance of introducing errors,” he says.

EFI Radius in Action

Simon Lacey, commercial director, says: “The Radius Estimating system is a huge improvement on what we were using previously. We can now take live data from the factory and use it to ensure that our estimates and quotations are as accurate as possible.

“The big plus is the data capture and planning. We are able to see the capacity we are using on the factory fl oor, looking at overtime, holidays, and so on for planning. We use it for purchases and factory management. We can now make accurate quotations and know that the margins we aim for are what we will actually get.”

Using the Radius system has changed the way Firstan’s staff can access their production, sales and analysis information. Account management, estimates and customer service are all treated as one process. Once an order has been placed, it goes to the planning stage. “All the information is now on-screen. This shows live status and how long it will take to produce,” says Murden.

“From where we were to where we are now has changed a lot, especially in planning,” says Steve Watchman, the print manager. “We used to have physical planning boards with T Cards. Now I see the plan on the screen and oversee it to make the changes. I know the presses in use, and when and how they can do the work.”

“The shop fl oor operators all have screens by their machines and they enter their status as time progresses. For instance, making ready, waiting for board, a fault, running, washing-up, logging off , etc, so we see how the job is progressing, step by step.”

Firstan, the UK’s leading independent manufacturer of pharmaceutical healthcare and specialist food carton packaging, has seen signifi cant gains in effi ciency, reduced lead times and access to real time data analysis since installing its EFI Radius ERP software almost four years ago. “We have generated greater effi ciencies through achieving tighter margins across the business,” says managing director Andrew Hartwig.

Business Intelligence Visualisation

Firstan was also one of the first UK users of EFI Business Intelligence, powered by QlikView. This is a multi-dimensional data analysis system developed by QlikTech, a business partner of EFI. “This enables you to pull data from the Radius system and show it in a data visualisation engine,” says Steve Rice, business intelligence director at EFI.

Murden says that “it’s very much an analysis tool, which is its main intended purpose. We use it extensively for KPIs, because it’s very good at that. From a commercial point of view it’s very good at pulling out sales data, customer data, location data, that sort of thing. It’s mostly a monthly usage system; although we do use it day-to-day, it’s not for operational requirements.”

The main users are department heads, including commercial director Simon Lacey. “It’s particularly useful as a sales tool, and sales analysis is where it’s helped us the most, as we can see where are markets are” says Murden.

Some four years on from the purchase decision, Firstan continues to work with EFI Radius to continually refine and further integrate the ERP system within its operations. Currently it is in the progress of upgrading to the latest standard release to take advantage of the newest features and integration capabilities.
