r e l a t i o n s h i p , c o n f ig u r a t io n of f a i l u r e s u r f a c e , t o r s i o n a l t o u g h n e s s ,
and u l t i m a t e t o r s i o n a l c a p a c i ty .

c o m p le x . The f a c t o r of s a f e ty in u l t i m a t e s t r e n g t h d e s ig n is u s u a l l y
de f in ed m e r e l y a s the r a t i o of c o l l a p s e o r f a i l u r e load to the s e r v i c e
load. In w o rk in g s t r e s s d e s ig n the f a c t o r of s a f e ty i s the r a t i o of the
load a t which the m e m b e r b e g in s to y ie ld to the d e s ig n load. F a c t o r
of s a f e ty i s an i m p o r t a n t index but i s in s u f f i c i e n t by i t s e l f . One m u s t
a l s o d e s c r i b e the p r e d i c t e d m o d e of f a i l u r e and th e a s s u m e d load p a t t e r n
f r o m w hich it r e s u l t s . Then , w i th th i s p a r t i c u l a r lo ad p a t t e r n , i t i s

II. O b je c t iv e s of th e Study
The p r o b l e m w a s to i n v e s t i g a t e the b e h a v i o r of p r e s t r e s s e d
c o n c r e t e m e m b e r s in t o r s i o n . T o r s i o n f a i l u r e s a r e e s p e c i a l l y sudden
in p l a in an d r e i n f o r c e d c o n c r e t e . P r e s t r e s s i n g i n c r e a s e s the t o r s
iona l s t r e n g t h of a m e m b e r . But f a i l u r e s in p r e s t r e s s e d c o n c r e t e
a r e a l s o d e s c r i b e d a s " s u d d e n " a n d v io l e n t " . S o m e t i m e s a p a r t i c
u l a r a m o u n t of duc t i l i ty , the a m o u n t depend ing on th e fu n c t io n of the
m e m b e r , i s sought. M o n o r a i l b e a m s p r o v i d e an e x a m p l e . The b e a m s

s t r e s s e d c o n c r e t e m e m b e r s s u b j e c t e d to t o r s i o n . P h a s e s of b e h a v io r
s tu d ie d inc lude i n i t i a l c r a c k i n g p a t t e r n , l o a d - d e f o r m a t i o n r e l a t i o n

The in v e s t ig a t i o n w a s l i m i t e d to r e c t a n g u l a r b e a m s with a
d e p t h - t o - w i d t h r a t i o of a p p r o x i m a t e l y 3 to 1. The beam 's w e r e a x i a l l y
