Effective energy management
in city transport vehicles
ŠKODA TRANSPORTATION Group
Group of companies engaged in the field of transport engineering, with tradition dated since 1859.
Focused on the transport engineering industry,
its key products include:
•low-floor trams
•electric locomotives
•subway trains, suburban train units
•hybrid vehicles and trolleybuses
•traction motors and complete propulsion equipment for transport systems.
ACTUAL TRENDS
Long term increase
of fuel and energy costs
Environmental aspects
= necessity of effective energy management
= relatively high fuel consumption
= frequent braking and acceleration
= impacts on environment, emissions produced directly in city agglomerations
CHARACTERISTICS
OF CITY TRANSPORT VEHICLES
City transport
= range with high importance
of effective energy management
TRANSPORTATION GROUP
TROLLEYBUSES
• modular design and of electrical equipment
- IGBT based traction equipment software controled
- water or electrical heating
- selection of traction motors and converters etc.
- automatic or manual collectors etc.
• high-tech solutions for device for autonomous drive:
- diesel generator – electrical power 50kW – 175kW fulfilment of EURO norms
- traction batteries – for 12m – 24m trolleybus -designed for different line profiles
- supercapacitor - fitted for the vehicle
TRANSPORTATION GROUP
SERIAL HYBRID BUSES
- Full low floor 12m length bus
- Bus operation in city with frequent stops – electric powered city bus
- Possibility of pure electric operation in the city center up to 10km autonomy
- Measured fuel saving 20-35%
SORT1 35% SORT2 29% SORT3 24%
- Modular solution of the components
- Asynchronous traction motor 120 kW, Voltage 300V
- AC propulsion traction drive with IGBT technology, small converters
- Power source: 160kW diesel generator, traction battery Li-Ion, supercapacitors
Basic configuration of traction drive for serial hybrid

TRANSPORTATION GROUP
TROLLEYBUS & SERIAL HYBRID BUS
Traction drives with new IGBT technology
Higher efficiency compared to previous solutions (GTO thyristor…) = energy consumption about 5 – 10 % lower
= implicit regenerative braking
= weight savings
= longer lifetime
= lower maintenance costs
TROLLEYBUS & SERIAL HYBRID BUS
Regenerative braking
Usage of the energy for auxiliaries (heating, air compressor etc.) Energy savings:
about 10 - 15% in “average conditions”
up to 30 % in optimal conditions (example = experiences from San Francisco)
TRANSPORTATION GROUP
TROLLEYBUS & SERIAL HYBRID BUS
Supercapacitors
Other possibility for effective energy management
= Accumulation of large energy volume in short time
= Quick discharge
= Recover of the beaking energy
Proven results from the projects:
Trolleybus for Roma - around 25% of energy saved
TriHyBus - improvement of dynamics paramaters of the bus
TRANSPORTATION GROUP
TROLLEYBUS & SERIAL HYBRID BUS
Traction batteries
Effective energy storage
= 100% emission free vehicle
= Flexible charging possibilities
= Reducement of the maintenance costs
Proven results from the projects:
Trolleybuses 12m – 18m, Hydrogen bus, Serial Hybrid bus
TRANSPORTATION GROUP
HYDROGEN BUS
- Full low floor 12m length bus
- Bus operation in city with frequent stops – electric powered city bus
- Unique solution of drive : Three sources of energy
1) Fuel cell – supplies continuously small power
2) Supercapacitors – supplies power peaks
3) Traction battery – supplies energy when is long time demand on power
- uphill drive, long distance drive and starts of FC system
Supercaps and traction batteries store energy in case of regenerative braking
Fuel cell is environmental friendly – no smoke in exhaust
– no dust
TRANSPORTATION GROUP
ADVANCED POWER MANAGEMENT
Learning bus
APM
Modification of energy flow according to route profile
= energy savings
= optimization of operational parameters
