Preparation: Learn more about International Day of Friendship

Human beings are social creatures and have always valued the importance of friends in their lives. To celebrate this noble feeling it was deemed fit to have a day dedicated to friends and friendship. Accordingly, the first Sunday of August was declared as a holiday in US in honor of friends by a proclamation made by US Congress in 1935. Since then, World Friendship Day has been celebrated every year on the first Sunday in August. In honor of Friendship Day, in 1998, Nane Annan, wife of Secretary-General Kofi_Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the worlds Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations. But in 2011, the United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Friendship with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, and cultures can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. The UN wanted the day to involve young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding, peace and respect for diversity. It is observed on July 30 each year.

On this International Day of Friendship, let us cultivate warm ties that strengthen our common humanity and promote the well-being of the human family.

Dividestudents into small groups and hand them the slips of paper with words.

Askthem to separate the ones related to friendship and the ones that arent related.

Checkthe result with the students. Related words: love, best friend, birthday, care, dear, happy, hug, funny, smile, kiss, remember, celebrate.

Askthem if they know about the International Friendship Day and supply some information about it.

Handstudents the worksheets with the Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe and read the ingredients.

Goto the school kitchen to prepare the cookies.

Readthe recipe and explain the vocabulary through mimicry: pour, mix, etc. Invite them to participate as much as possible. Invite different students to help you.

Whilethe cookies are baking, dictate a short paragraph about a four legged friend (explain that they are pets with four legs.) and ask students to draw it. E.g. My four legged friend is a cat. Its names Tuti. Its four years old. Its black, brown and white. I love my four legged friend. My friend eats cat food and drinks milk. It lives with me.

Askstudents to show the drawings to the group.
