September 10 1934. One of Maris's bigest accomplish ments

hapened in 1961. He hit 61 homeruns that year. He broke a

record that has been set by Babe Ruth in 1927. Maris's record held

until 1998, when slugger Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs. Maris

received the American Leagues MVP award in 1960 and 1961. He

dies in 1985.
