Filipinos m o v e t h e

world! Fili-pinos have gained the reputation of being resil-ient and pro-ficient in Eng-lish. Because of these

qualities, Filipinos are present all over the world, employed in various occupations and helping the world economy. We are in your homes, factories, offices, schools, ships, hospitals, and research centers. If you wish to hire Filipino workers and professionals to work in Taiwan, the MECO is here to help you. MECO can also assist you in hiring Filipinos for your businesses in the Philippines or any other location in the world. MECO maintains a listing of Filipinos who have had ex-perience working with Taiwanese com-panies. Working with other government agencies, we can help you find the per-fect fit for your needs. You can visit our MECO Labor Affairs’ website (www.meco-labor.org.tw) to ac-cess our online database (ODB) applica-tions. The MECO Labor Affairs Center web-site offers the following online services for Taiwan Manpower Agencies (TMA): * Registration of licensed TMAs for passwords * Viewing TMA profile * Application for document verifica-tion * Request for information update

Aside from the regular hiring sys-tem through manpower agencies, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO), in coordination with our respective government agen-cies, namely: Philippine Overseas and Employment Administration (POEA) and Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training (BEVT), are implementing the Special Hiring Program in Taiwan (SHPT), also known as the direct hiring Program through Taiwan’s Direct Hiring Service Centers (DHSC). The SHPT is another recruitment chan-nel where workers may be hired without the intervention of manpower agencies in Taiwan and in the Philippines. Taiwan job market lures back OFWs

Filipinos will have another crack at work-ing in Taiwan as the job market in the country begins to normalize. Reydeluz D. Conferido, director of labor affairs of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) here, said there are signs of recovery in the horizon for Taiwan’s job mar-

ket both due to a new stimulus package of the government and the recovery of the electronics sector. “We are hoping this positive trend would continue. But Taiwan remains vul-nerable to the conditions of the world economy,” he said. Conferido said about 2,000 of 5,000 permanently dis-placed overseas Filipino workers in Tai-wan due to the financial crisis are now back to work in the country. This along with more deployment has resulted in net jobs created as of October this year of about 10,000, Conferido said. Displaced OFWs who have been sent back to the Philippines are given priority in re-hiring because of their experience in electronics and other related positions. Data from the MECO shows that cu-mulatively the number of OFWs in Taiwan now totals 70,537 from around 61,000 in the same period in 2008. The Philippines is the fourth largest source of foreign employers in Taiwan. At its peak in the 1990s, Taiwan had about 120,000 OFWs here but competition from countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand slowly eroded the Philip-pines’ share in the Taiwanese market. Conferido said the new stimulus package of the Taiwanese government would open jobs in infrastructure and short-gestating rehabilitation work.

Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson, de-tained here on modified drug charges, smiled at family and friends after he was allowed to post bail of HK$1 million (P5.81 million) by the Tsuen Wan District Court Thursday morning. The prosecution had rejected the bail application on grounds that Singson, 41, had no “local ties” and only friends, and that he was facing “a serious offense.”But Principal Magistrate Ernest Lin grant-ed the application after two guarantors, Hong Kong residents Derrick Wong and Annie Shek, agreed to secure a cash surety bond. Singson is not allowed to leave Hong Kong and has to surrender his travel papers, including his diplomatic passport, by 5 p.m. Friday. While on bail, he will stay with Wong in the latter’s flat in Sai Wan Ho, and is re-

quired to report to the North Point police station from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily. He is also expected to show up on time for his trial at the district court on Sept. 7. Marikina Rep. Romero Federico Quimbo, who attended the hearing on Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr.’s instruc-tion, said recent findings that Singson car-ried a smaller volume of cocaine than earlier reported had prompted the court to grant his motion for bail and amend the charge from drug trafficking to illegal possession. A reexamination by Hong Kong authori-ties showed that Singson had 6.7 grams of cocaine, and not 26.1 grams, as earlier re-ported, according to Quimbo. “That’s the reason he was granted temporary liberty,” Quimbo told the In-quirer in an interview by phone. Singson’s father, Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson, and his girlfriend, starlet Lovi Poe, were present at the hearing for his motion for bail. It was, according to defense counsel

John Reading, the third bail application of Singson. His applications on July 13 and July 22 were rejected by the court. The lawmaker was arrested at Chek Lap Kok International Airport en route to Macau on July 11 for possession of co-caine and two tablets of diazepam (a sedative marketed as Valium), accord-ing to court records. The amount of $1 million had been paid as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Singson was seen leaving in a police vehicle by a local media representative. Earlier, Wong and Shek were asked to stand before the court. “As sureties, you understand that you will lose money if your friend does not show up,” Magistrate Lin said. In response, the two nodded. Turning to Singson, Lin told him to “please behave yourself” before reading the bail terms. In Hong Kong, trafficking in a danger-ous drug carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.

President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday does not favor the divorce bill being pushed through by the Gabriela party-list group, but said he was for legally separated couples to be allowed to remarry. “Divorce is a no-no,’’ Aquino told re-porters after attending an international motor show at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. The President volunteered he had looked into the divorce proposal but remained mum concerning his youngest sister Kris Aquino-Yap, to have her five-year marriage

with basketball player James Yap nullified. Aquino said he did not want to give any opinion on his sister’s petition to nul-lity her marriage as this might influence the “workings of the court’’ and even the Office of the Solicitor General, which is under his office. The 50-year-old bachelor President said he was particularly against the idea of Las Vegas-style divorces “where you marry in the morning, and get a divorce in the afternoon.’’ But he said he also recognized there

were “unions that were wrong’’ and cou-ples who, despite interventions, could not stay together. The President said he was for legal separation “that would use stringent (re-quirements) to ascertain there are irrec-oncilable differences (between a cou-ple)... but at the end of the day, they should be allowed to re-marry.’’ We have legal separation today (but they) cant’ marry. Kawawa naman yung mga nag-kamali (Pity those who made a mistake),” he added.

While the show of affec-tion that action star

Robin Padilla bestowed upon Mariel Rodriguez in an interview on “En-tertainment Live” on Aug. 7 had the whole a r c h i p e l a g o swooning in glee, some-one from afar —Aus-tralia, to be exact— is said to have been not as happy with it.

Liezl Sicangco, the former wife of Pa-dilla —and mother of Roselle Eliza-

beth, Kylie Nicole, Sherileen Zel and Ali— is alleging that Rod-

quoted as saying in an article posted in Philippine Entertainment Portal.

According to Liezl, it has been six weeks since Padilla last visited his son, who had been crying when he last talked to his mom on the phone. She also insinuated that Padilla has been teaching Ali lessons on how to handle girls. “As of this early, e, tinuturuan

mga bagay na ‘yan,” said she. Sicangco said that she only

agreed for Padilla to bring their kids to the Philippines after he promised her

that he will take good care of them. “Sabi sa akin noon ni Robin bago sila

umalis ng Australia, hindi raw muna siya mag-aasawa agad para maasikaso niya ang mga bata pero iba na ang nangyari ngayon. Paano nga niya maaasikaso ang mga bata, lalo na si Ali, kung nakatutok siya ngayon at gusto na niyang pakasalan si Mariel?” Sicangco asked. The distraught mother is now appealing for Padilla to return the kids to her care. Robin refused to comment on the is-sue. Mariel, through text, responded on the matter following a query by an online site. She said, “Ms. Liezel can say any-thing that she likes. That’s her right, as free men, we have to respect each other’s views. As a mother, she must protect her children. Totally understandable...”

Liezl disapproves of Robin being crazy about MarielCharlie suc-cumbed to co-lon cancer on August 8 at the age of 75. He was laid to rest on the morning

of August 13 at the Heritage Park in Taguig City. Boots Anson-Roa mentioned, how-ever, that  Charlie Davao had quite a sense of humor, which belied his strong Spanish features and serious screen roles throughout his career. "Charlie was very playful and ma-hilig mang-good time," recalled Boots, whose broadcaster husband Pete Roa died of cancer on August 9, 2007. Ricky Davao wept during the memo-rial mass and eulogies celebrating the life of his father that evening. "Underneath that strict exterior, he was a fun-loving family man," Ricky recalled nostalgically. As a good-looking youth from Iloilo, the former University of the East (UE) stu-dent and part-time print-ad model was eager to become a movie star. He au-ditioned upon learning that Sampaguita Pictures was on the lookout for new talents. His showbiz debut was in 1959 via the film Isinumpa. Charlie was particularly proud of his Agent 009 role in the 1965 action flick, Pitong Matahari. A slew of films followed, establishing Charlie Davao  as one of the country's versatile actors. Charlie's first marriage was in 1959 with a Spanish-language professor named Emma Marie. Their union was blessed with four children: Bing, Ricky, Mylene (who died in an accident when she was only five), and Mariella.

Aries - Relationships are a strong focus for you in September, dear Aries. Tending to a partner’s needs is important now, and it would be wise to put some of your own personal projects on

the back burner in order to focus on a sig-nificant partnership. The 8-14 brings romantic excitement, important news, and money op-portunities. Past efforts on the job pay off this month. Some of you may find that your career is moving towards a more service-oriented di-rection. Increased public recognition and pro-fessional success can be had now.

Taurus - In September, there is a scurry of activity surrounding work and health matters, dear Taurus. Nevertheless, romantic matters are strong, and might

be found on the job. Income from foreign sources could also figure this month. The 10-14 is a strong period for work, health, ro-mance, and money. Take advantage! While your work demands a lot of attention in Sep-tember, you are also more able to get away from the daily routine--more transportation options open, for example, or you have (or create) more free time to do so.

Gemini - Romantic and crea-tive energy runs very high this month, dear Gemini. Financial gains may come through a partnership or there may be an

increase in a partner’s income in September. A partnership benefits from more expansive, warm, and intimate energy. A friend comes to you in the first week of the month, whether this is a new friend or one from your past. The 12-14 represents an opportunity period for you, particularly in the areas of romance, children, and friendship. Important decision making and presentations should be scheduled be-fore the 24th.

Cancer - A busy home life fig-ures strongly this month, dear Cancer. Entertaining in your home is especially successful now. Relationships and partner-ships benefit from expansive,

warm energy, or successful new ones are entered in September. The lines of commu-nication open up between you and a special someone. Sharing daily events and goings-on with one another gives you much pleasure. In-come from work activities is strong and could increase. Pleasant and surprising news arrives around the Full Moon on the 15th, and has to do with travel, legal, or educational matters.

Leo - Practical matters and com-munications are a big focus for you in September, dear Leo. More security in your job is likely to boost your confidence. Your natural tal-

ents are more likely to be appreciated by others, particularly on the job. You have a stronger de-sire than usual to communicate your ideas, and siblings, relatives, and neighbors tend to play a stronger role in your life this month. The 4-5 brings romantic and creative opportunities; while the 12-13 can be tricky when it comes to relating with a significant other.

Virgo - Finances are in focus and strong in September, dear Virgo. You might find that ex-pressing yourself creatively re-ally helps to define yourself and to understand yourself better,

and it could lead to some profits as well! You have a stronger ability to hold the attention of an audience in September. Children and romance thrive this month. Love, love affairs, and other social activities help to enhance a healthy self image. You are feeling less private and more open about your opinions and ex-periences now. The 15th brings surprises from a partner.

Libra - A very busy month is in store for you, dear Libra. Opportuni-ties seem to fall into your lap this month, particularly involving edu-cation, travel, and relationships. Material profits come from com-

munications projects. Home improvements, such as real estate or renovation purchases, are favored, as is moving to a new dwelling if applicable. The 10-14 presents stellar op-portunities for partnerships, negotiations, and positive reinforcement in general. The 15-16 brings surprises surrounding work and health matters. The 22-23 is strong for personal fi-nances, gifts, and acquiring new possessions.

Scorpio - Although you may find yourself in demand socially from time to time in September, dear Scorpio, most of your activities are behind the scenes. Relationships with a partner and with friends are

low-key and private. A scurry of activity surround-ing romance or children occurs around the 15th. Chances are excellent that you will find a lovely confidante this month--someone to share your daily activities and thoughts with. Gifts or oppor-tunities may come through visits, short trips, mes-sages, emails, or they could come through con-tacts with siblings, classmates, and neighbors.

Sagittarius - Stimulating friend-ships and group activities, as well as increased energy, figure strongly for you in September, dear Sagittarius. Personal projects bear fruit, and practical matters

are especially favorable. It’s an excellent pe-riod in which to ask for a raise, before the 24th. You may have more resources to invest into your career or business. Being in a position of responsibility or authority is something you place a high value on this month. Partnerships are friendly, and singles are more likely to find romance in group settings or through friends.

Capricorn - Others are likely to turn to you for advice this month, dear Capricorn, as all eyes turn to you. If you feel that others are judging you for what you have and haven’t done this month, you’re probably

correct! Trips could be especially rewarding for you right now--they can provide a pleasant breather from pressures in your life. You are feel-ing especially proud and even buoyant in Sep-tember, and this confidence enhances all areas of life. Romance may be found through your career and business activities. A private project can pay off now.

Aquarius - A spirit for adventure and intrigue takes hold in Sep-tember, dear Aquarius, when the humdrum simply doesn’t sat-isfy! Friendships move forward, and you may be repaid if you’re

waiting on a friend. A partner is craving more intimacy this month. Singles will find romance when they are out and about, away from home and typical activities. Help seems to be magically there when you need it, and your own awesome strength and faith is always there to draw upon. An epiphany regarding money or possessions occurs around the 15th.

Pisces - Dear Pisces, career mat-ters moves forward this month, and the focus is on increasing business income. Success is indicated. Money from other sources than personal income,

such as through a partner or bank loan, is also strong. A partnership is especially intimate in September. An awakening of emotional con-sciousness occurs around the Full Moon in your sign on the 15th. Stellar days on the 17-22 offer opportunities in the areas of relationships, negotiations, personal income, and family. Partnering with a friend in some tangible way can be part of the picture this month.

Dagdag pa niya, “Sa point of view ko

So, mas gusto ko pong mag-concentrate do’n.”

Claudine’s angry Twitter posts Claudine Barretto has posted recently in her Twitter Account, “You’re not worth it, girl. I’ll keep praying for your soul. Napakasama ng ginawa mo,” some are

saying that the message is for Angelica Panagniban who had word war with her sister, Gretchen Barreto, last July over her comment on Panganiban’s boyfriend, Derek Ramsey. Claudine had tweeted last August 4, Don’t mess with my family... Sana mangyari sa’yo ’to if pakasalan ka... Sana ma-remember mo yung magagandang bagay na ginawa namin ng family ko for you... Di pa tapos ’to...” During that week Angelica apologized to Gretchen through “The Buzz”. During an interview Claudine said I can’t allow them to get hurt, whether they’re family members or friend.”

Goodbye, Wowowee! Hello, Pilipinas Win na Win! “Natuwa” was the reaction of around 1,028 out of the 1,582 online voters, who participated in the poll last week, on the sudden exit of Wowowee. We can only guess their possible reasons. Maybe Wowowee’s poor ratings made the viewers clamor for a new show? May-be the people just wanted ABS-CBN management to seal Wowowee’s fate, which has been in limbo for three months now? Maybe, the publicity blitz did more harm than good to its host Willie Revillame? It’s hard to tell at this point whether it was the show that made the star famous or the other way around. This can be another topic next time. But The Pulse is a proof that people tend to forget things easily. PILIPINAS WIN NA WIN! Its replacement began airing last July 31, and 45.45% of the viewers who have watched think that the show is a “Winner.” However, 32.13% were upfront in saying, “Hindi ko type!” while 22.33% did not watch the pilot episode.

Celebrity couple Kristine Hermosa and Oyo Sotto to wed soon Kristine and Oyoboy has got to be one of showbiz’s low key ce-lebrity couple. They met duirng the shooting of “Enteng Kabisote” mov-

ie. In fact when they’re asked about the sta-tus of their relationship, they’re quiet about it. That got a lot of people thinking if they’re in relationship or simply “just friends”. If it weren’t for Dina Bonnevie to con-firm the said union, everyone would still be in the dark. In fact Dina flew all the way to Canada to “Mamanhikan” with Kristine’s family. She met with Kristine Hermosa’s Step dad, mom and sister. Everyone is fine between two families regarding the wedding plans of the two. This would be Kristine’s second time to get married, her marriage with Diether Ocampo was annulled.

Love is the greatest gift of all gifts from God to us all. In this series, we will look at the different char-acteristics or qualities of love. We will start with the quality of love

called kindness. We say love is kind because it is not harsh, cruel, inhuman, bitter, ill condi-tioned, ferocious, or brutal. Kindness is caring, benevolent, charitable, good in-tentioned, sympathetic, compassionate, or accommodating. I read about the story of Roy Angel who was a poor preacher with a mil-lionaire brother. It was back in 40’s when the brother hit it big in Texas owning a property and sold it and became a mil-lionaire overnight. He got it big also in the stocks and move to New York. Roy’s wealthy brother visited him one Christ-mas and presented him with a new car-a gleaming top of the line Packard. Roy kept it in a garage downtown. Roy was surprised one morning when he came to get his Packard. He saw a young raga-muffin ghetto boy with his face pressed up against one of the car windows. He was just peering into the new car’s interior with wide admiring eyes. “Hello Son” Roy said. The boy said, “Is this your car mis-ter?” “Yes” Roy replied, “It is” “How much does it cost?” “Well I don’t really know how much it cost” “You mean, you own this car and you don’t know its cost?” No, I don’t because my brother gave it to me as a present.” At this the boy’s eyes grew even wider. The boy thought for a moment…saying, “I wish, I wish...” Roy thought the boy will say, “I wish I had a brother like that. But he didn’t. The boy looked up to him and said, “I wish I could be a brother like that.” He invited the boy to ride in his car and the boy readily agreed and asks if Roy could take him by his house. When they got there, the boy asked if he could wait just for a minute. When the boy got back, he saw the boy carrying a younger brother. The boy sat his brother on the curb and said, “See?” It’s just like I told you. It’s a brand new car. His brother gave it to him and someday, “I’m going to buy you a car just like that!” What impressed you in that story? It wasn’t the millionaire’s gift that impressed us. It was the desire of the boy who dreams of the impossible prosperity so he can lavish it on his brother. That’s kindness! That’s the character of love. Kindness responds to the needs of oth-ers. Kindness tends to exhibit generosity, not stoned hearted or cruelty when others are in need. This is what John means in the Holy Scriptures ( 1 John 3:17) when he said, “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? “ In fact God rewards those who are generous to those in need. This is what King Solomon in Proverbs 19; 17 meant, when he said, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will re-pay him for his deed.” What it means is if you develop kindness to others by being generous, God sees that as something He owes you. In time, God will pay you back more than you ever know.

Kindness is not blind but sees and ac-cept the faults of others as St. Peter (1 Pe-ters 4:8) says, “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly (deeply), since love covers a multitude of sins.” It does not mean you agree with the sin, it means you don’t treat people harshly when they make mistakes or offend you. You don’t become ferocious against them. You show kindness to those who are unkind to you.   Love does not erase the past, but it makes the future different. We create an emotional climate where we can deal with our past conflicts. The same insight we get from the Apostle Paul in Romans 12: 20-21, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”If you want the gift of love from God with all its qualities to be yours, simply invite His beloved Son, Jesus Christ to come in your life. God’s gift of love is in him. He suf-fered for your sins by dying on the cross. Let him in to your heart now by praying this prayer, “Lord Jesus Christ, I invite you into my heart and life right now. I turn away from my unloving sinful life. Forgive me and let your love take reign in my life. Amen.”-------------------------------------------------If you have questions about the article or if you need counseling and prayer, call bro. Paul (02) 28344127 during office hours

CincoWhen it comes to the horror genre, Star Cinema is taking chances and awaits with abated breath to see whether their flick could make or break . However,

there’s no denying that ABS-CBN also boasts of brilliant and unforgettable movies in this genre such as Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara, Feng Shui and the unjustly under-rated Wag Kang Lilingon to name a few Star Cinema is once again gambling on its latest offer Cinco. Is it going to tick or not? Signs are pointing positively as the film’s de-vices might serve to lure the viewers. Fans will surely feast on an army of celebrities doing cameo roles along with the original cast. New breed of directors behind the film offer unconventional perspective. Horror fanatics will surely have more than what they can imagine with the film’s use of 5 episodes instead of the typical trilogy. The five episodes are: Braso starring AJ Perez, Sam Concepcion and Robi Do-mingo as fraternity neophytes challenged to stay in a morgue as part of their initiation rites, this episode sadly is a weak opening for the film. Paa, the second episode directed by Enrico Santos, starring Jodi Sta. Maria, the mother who is being haunted by

a vengeful ghost. Mata, the third episode by Director Ato Bautista, which stars Maja Salvador is the girlfriend of an ill-tempered guy (Rayver Cruz) who at first refused to confess her boyfriend’s crime to the police, making her relive (or dream, it wasn’t really clear) the kill-ing scenario over and over again. Mukha, the third episode Mariel Rodriguez is a ruthless, screaming advertising boss who fires the janitor for, of all things, a bad photocopy

job. This factor will latter be explained by the frightening use of the copying machine and freaky photocopies of the janitor’s face in the part where Mariel’s character gets herself screaming and running scared out of her wits.

Hating KapatidViva film’s latest offering Hating Kapatid, is topbilled by the two young women who holds unparalleled prestige in their own ex-pertise, actress Judy Ann Santos and singer Sarah Geronimo. Juday assumes the role of Rica while Sarah portrays her character’s younger sister Maria Cecilia. They run a fireworks shop in

Bocaue, Bulacan with their hip grand-ma Lola Amor (Gina Pareño). Ever since their par-ents (Tonton Gutier-rez and Cherry Pie Picache) left for Libya more than a decade

ago to work, Rica as the elder sister took the responsibility of looking after Maria Cecilia. But in one incident she becomes overpro-tective towards the young girl. At first, all is well between the siblings but problems arise as Cecilia grows into a young woman, and becomes independent, Rica faces her own battle finding it difficult to accept that her sister is “growing apart” from her.

KRIS and JAMESContinued from page 10 Di ko man nabigyan si bimby ng com-plete family, but I can still make sure he’ll al-ways feel the love of both his parents for him. Good night. Matapos ang pagdinig, naging matipid si Kris sa naging kanyang pahayag:  “It’s a compromise agreement na pina-sok namin with the interest of our son.  Siguro, that’s the only thing I can say right now be-cause the judge admonished us to not share what we spoke of with the judge privately.

“Ang sinabi sa amin dito ng judge, and I think klarong-klaro naman sa aming dalawa, ang utmost priority naming talaga is ‘yong well-being ng anak namin. I think that, on my part, I feel naman also, sa part naman ni James, na gagawin namin lahat to ensure that this will be not traumatic for our son.  “Siguro kung marami man kaming mga differences between the two of us, I don’t know, only time will tell kung maayos pa namin o hindi. Pero bukas ang kalooban ko at bukas ang kalooban ni James na subukan naming maayos ang lahat dahil mahal namin ang anak namin. Thank you.”  Ayon naman sa legal counsel na si Atty. Lorna Kapunan, naging cooperative naman ang dalawang panig. “Kasi ang ginawa ng judge, isa-isa sila sa chambers. Walang law-yers! Visitation lang ang issue,” sabi pa ni Atty. Kapunan. Ibinahagi rin ni Atty. Kapunan ang mga detalye ng naging resolution para sa Motion for Provisional Award of Visitation Rights na inihain ni James.  Ayon kay Atty. Kapunan, “The agreement was James can see Baby James three times a week—Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Kapag Wednesday at may games, puwe-deng dalhin sa games.  On Friday, overnight up to Saturday.” Ang bisa ng resolusyon ay sinimulan rin ng Agosto 20, kung kaya’t pag-katapos ng pagdinig maaari nang iuwi ni James ang kanyang anak para sa napag-kasunduang overnight ng bata mula Biyernes ng hapon hangang 2pm ng Sabado.  Nang tanungin kung ano ang naramda-man ni James sa naging desisyon ng korte, sabi ni Atty. Kapunan, “He’s very happy at nagpapasalamat sa court.”

Department of Health fears dengue outbreak at the Batasan Hills includ-ing 9 more barangays in Quezon

City, namely: Gulod, San Bartolome, Tan-dang Sora, Culiat, Bahay Toro, Nagkaisang Nayon, Tatalon, Sauyo and Bagbag. Cur-rently, 950 cases of dengue have been recorded in Quezon City alone. The Depart-ment of Health (DOH) warned that Dengue cases could reach a record-high 80,000 this year. The DOH recorded 40,648 dengue cases from January-July 2010, up 48% from 27,473 in the same period last year. Dr. Eric Tayag, head of the DOH’s Na-tional Epidemiology Center, expects more cases to surface amid the rainy season therefore he advised the public to clean their surroundings and get rid of mosquito breeding grounds such as stagnant water. Some hospitals in response to the threat have already set up express lanes in for den-gue patients such as the East Avenue Medi-cal Center and San Lazaro Hospital.

Symptoms of dengue Dengue hemorrhagic fever is an acute infectious disease brought about by the Aedes aegypti, a day-biting mosquito.

When someone has dengue, he will show the following symptoms, according to the DOH:*sudden onset of high fever that may last 2 to 7 days* joint and muscle pain and pain behind the eyes* weakness* skin rashes - maculopapular rash or red tiny spots on the skin called petechiae* nosebleeding when fever starts to subside* abdominal pain* vomiting of coffee-colored matter* dark-colored stoolsThose experiencing any of the above symp-toms are advised to seek immediate medi-cal attention.

Preventing dengueThe DOH has advised the public to clean their surroundings including plants, gardens, canals, and get rid of stagnant water that collect in old tires and other containers. This will help rid the environment of dengue-car-rying mosquitoes. Here are other preventive measures from

DOH, as shared in their website:* Cover water drums and water pails at all times to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.* Replace water in flower vases once a week.* Clean all water containers once a week. Scrub the sides well to remove eggs of mos-quitoes sticking to the sides.* Clean gutters of leaves and debris so that rain water will not collect as breeding places of mosquitoes.* Old tires used as roof support should be

punctured or cut to avoid accumulation of water.* Collect and dispose all unusable tin cans,

jars, bottles, and other items that can collect and hold water.

Agence France-Presse Tucking into more spinach and other green leafy vegetables can reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, a study published on Friday by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) said. The research wades into a controversial area, and its authors caution more investigation is needed to confirm the findings. A team led by Patrice Carter at the University of Leicester, central England, re-viewed six studies involving 220,000 people that ex-plored the link between fruit and vegeta-ble consump-tion and Type 2, or adult-on-set, diabetes. Eating one and a half extra servings of green leafy vegetables cut the risk of diabetes by 14 percent, but eating more fruit and vegetables com-bined had negligible impact, they found.Type 2, the commonest form of diabetes, has spread fast from rich countries to fast-developing economies as fatty, sugary diets and sedentary lifestyles take hold.More than 220 million people worldwide are afflicted with the disease, which kills more than one million people every year, according to the World Health Organiza-tion (WHO). As obesity rates increase, the number of deaths could double between 2005 and 2020, the WHO has said.Nutrition and exercise are known factors in prevention, but which foods work best

and why remain disputed because so few good-quality studies have been car-ried out. Carter’s team suggests that green leafy vegetables are useful because they are high in antioxidants and magnesium, but more work is needed to bear this out.In a separate study published on Wednes-day in the British Journal of Pharmacology,

Chinese scientists said a com-pound extracted from

various Chinese herbs helped

reduce the impact of

Type 2 dia-betes in mice.The prod-

uct, known as emodin,

inhibits an en-zyme called

11-Beta-HSD1, which plays a role in resistance

to insulin, the hormone that helps clear excess sugar from the blood. Emodin can be extracted from Chi-nese rhubarb (Rheum palmatum) and Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspi-datum) among others, the paper said. “Researchers would need to develop chemicals that have similar effects as emodin, and see which if any of these could be used as a therapeutic drug,” said Ying Leng of the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica. Diabetes is controlled by injections of insulin and blood-sugar lev-els. If unchecked, the disease can lead to heart disease, vision loss, limb amputation and kidney failure.

The Department of Health (DOH) warned that Dengue cases could reach a record-high 80,000 this year. The DOH recorded 40,648 dengue cases from January-July 2010, up 48% from 27,473 in the same period last year. Some hospitals in response to the threat have already set up express lanes in for dengue patients such as the East Avenue Medical Center and San Lazaro Hospital. On the same note, the Department of Health (DOH) said trends have changed and dengue is no longer just a "rainy season disease" as cases are being reported nationwide throughout the year. DOH Head Executive Assistant Dr. Yolanda Oliveros added that the DOH is closely watching the dengue fatality rate to make sure it does not double in the coming months. Oliveros said the dengue Case Fatality Rate (CFR) should not be higher than one percent of the total number of dengue cases. The CFR has now reached 328 or .8

percent of the total number of dengue cases in the country which stands at 40,648 as of July 31 this year.Highest number of dengue cases During the first seven months of this year, when the country's highest number of dengue cases has been recorded, six regions have already recorded death rates that are higher than one percent: Regions I, II, IV-B, VII, X and Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). In the National Capital Region (NCR), five municipalities have CFRs that are higher than one percent: Marikina, Navotas, Quezon City, Taguig, and Valenzuela. Quezon City, which has the most number of fatalities at 10, has a CFR of 1.3 percent. Valenzuela has the highest CFR at 1.8 percent: out of 221 dengue cases in the area, four patients have died of the disease. Oliveros reminded the public that the most cost-effective way to fight dengue is to keep the surroundings clean. "DOH reminds people to 'search and destroy.' Look for the breeding place of mosquitoes and try to destroy it. That entails household and community participation."

Edna Chuang

Mr. Johnny Si was born in Bag-gao, Cagayan on March 8, 1943. Johnny Si is most popu-

larly known as Big J since his birthday falls on the same day as Jaworski. Before he came to Taiwan he owned a garment factory in the Philippines and was also a general manager of an export business at the same time. But sadly, Mr. Si’s fam-ily business encountered some problems and Big J decided to try his luck in an-other country. Big J was set to go to South Africa but due to diplomatic ties between

the said country and the Philippines he has to stop over in Taiwan to wait for his visa. Big J arrived in Taiwan in 1989 and eventually discarded his plans of going to South Africa when he was persuaded by a Taiwanese friend to open up the Filipino Store with him in Luo Dong, Ilan. But partnership is not his cup of tea so he eventually put up a smaller business but entirely his own. OFWs immediately welcomed the Big

J Store when it first opened back in 1992. It was a haven for Filipinos who were far from their love ones; it is a place where they can meet and bond with fellow Fili-

pinos. Big J Store offers remittance and cargo service as well as Filipino prod-ucts. He even provides delivery and pick-up of boxes, remittances and goods for

Filipinos who cannot go out. Big J also opens his restaurant during Sundays and Holidays so that Filipinos in Ilan can gath-er to eat, sing and enjoy their free time. Suffice it to say that Big J is the pioneer of Filipino Stores in Ilan which caters to OFWs from Chiao Xi, Su Ao, Luo Dong and Hua lian. His services for OFWs in Ilan who comprised of domestic helpers and fishermen go as far as from Ao Ti to Li San area. Currently, Big J is the President of the Filipino Community in Ilan and his group is very active in joining social events such as the Philippine Independence Day. Big J is also active in extending help to his fellow Filipinos who needs his assistance. It is no wonder that he is quite popular in the Filipino Community in Taiwan. However, due to the recent decline of the numbers of OCW’s in Taiwan, Big J cannot help but express his disappoint-ment, but despite of this obstacle he’s still able to maintain his business and continually provides services to Filipinos in Ilan.
