    Autumn days are here again

Soon, the leaves will be falling and it will be time totidy up the garden in preparation for winter. Whenwe receive our calendar at Christmas, the yearstretches before us but when we reach September, suddenly the year seems to be racing towards itsend.

For gardeners and farmers its harvest time again, reaping the benefits of all that hard work; preparingand planting in the spring. There is nothing more satisfying than eatingthe produce of your own garden, knowing its history and knowing thatit comes fresh to the table.

At our harvest festival services we shall focus on giving thanks for theproduce of the land, but harvest can come in many and various ways. Its all about celebrating rewards and achievements e.g. the birth of achild; the completion of a task; the passing of an exam.

In countries where there is drought and famine, harvest doesnthappen, similarly there are people who do not enjoy rewards andachievements in their lives for a variety of reasons: poverty, illness, abuse, poor education, lack of support and so on.

We all need to experience a personal harvest, to invest our lives andour time to produce something, however small, which builds up ourself-esteem and sense of achievement. It could be baking a cake, knitting a jumper, a course of study or developing a hobby. We can alldo something and we all need to feel a sense of achievement andsatisfaction, otherwise our lives become moribund, bound withfrustration and discontent.

Jesus told a famous parable about a sower who sowed seed: some fellon a path and was eaten, some was scorched and died, some chokedbut some produced an abundant crop. Even God needs a personalharvest; he sowed a Son and is reaping a Family; children of God.

Unless we sow we dont reap and reaping requires perseverance. So,with winter approaching, what ideas, projects, personal hopes orambitions are you going to sow? Dont sit back and do nothing.Redeem the time as the old Prayer Book says, in other words, takeevery opportunity and use it.

    Christian greetings,

    Revd. Bob Politt

    Boys Voices

    Praise Within Worship

Boys Voices, comprised of about twenty boy singers withunbroken voices, come together weekly to practise. Although

Yateley based, the boys are drawn from schools across quite awide area, and the choir, though non-denominational, is

Christian based. The boys sing regularly at concerts, usually atthe end of school terms and will sing for weddings when

    requested.Now beginning its 13

thyear, the choir has enjoyed the company

of many boy singers and introduced them to some fine music.

Itremains, clearly, a minority interest, but those who embrace the

opportunity both give and receive.By arrangement with Rev Politt, Boys Voices will visit StMarys, Stratfield Saye and sing at the 11 oclock morning

    service on Sunday, 17th

October. In such to the boys quite unusual surroundings, they will give

    voice in Praise Within Worship.

You are warmly invited to attend.R. Lillington. (Choirmaster)

Creator God, we pray for those to whom we owe our harvest, all whose labourand dedication enables us to share in the bounty of the worlds resources Wepray for farmers in other lands especially those in Pakistan who have lost alltheir crops in the recent floods and for the people of Pakistan who are sufferingas a result and are left hungry and homeless. We pray for a suitable responsefrom a world where so many have so much. Help us to share our wealth withthose who have nothing. We pray also for those who bring a harvest from thesea working in all weathers to provide for us food often collected by those whorisk life and limb to provide it. Give to all who persevere in providing for a needyworld patience, dedication and make them wise stewards of your gifts to us.

In the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen

    SEPTEMBER News

    Seeking Planning Advice

The St. Leonards Church extension project has now reached the stagewhere we are in active discussions with the Basingstoke and DeaneBorough Council and the Sherfield Parish Council regarding planningapproval. We are also seeking the approval of the Diocesan AdvisoryCommittee (DAC) and we are working closely with our neighbours atSherfield Court to ensure the final plans have total harmony with theenvironment as well as fulfilling our need to provide the much neededtoilets, kitchen and crche area for the church.

    Being Flexible

We are very excited about our proposed plans but realise modificationsmay need to be made in order to satisfy the planning authorities and ourown budget. But this is all part of the development of such a project andwe need to be patient to take the process step by step. We do notenvisage any increase in traffic when the new facility is in place; it is pure-ly there to enhance and support the community as it exists today.

Thank you for your kind help and support

Meanwhile, our fundraising continues but we still need your help! We areextremely grateful for the steady support we are getting from thecommunity and for this our thanks go to you all. So many of you haveshown interest and support and have made gifts great and small and, asthe saying goes, Every little helps. We would also like to thank BettyManser and her family for generously donating gifts given in memory of

her late husband Arthur at his funeral service which totalled nearly 1000.We are very grateful for this kind and unexpected gift.

Please help us with your ideas

We have ideas for events during the coming months and will be advertisingthese in the near future. If anyone has ideas for further fund raising pleasecontact Richard Elphick or one of the other church officers listed at theback of the magazine on page 47.

    Beat Officers Report

Litter: In recent months it seems that parts of Bramleyhave been suffering from an increase in the amount of

    litteringand more seriously fly tipping.

    Discarding waste in

such a careless manner is thoughtless and potentiallydangerous. It poses serious risks for children and animals, increases the risk of fire and encourages rats and mice. Italso costs you, as tax payers, a great deal of money toremove.

Leaving fly tipped rubbish in public areas is unacceptable andirresponsible. It is also illegal and offenders could face a fine of

anything up to 50,000 and 12 months in prison if found guilty in aMagistrates Court or 5 years and an unlimited fine if the case goes toCrown Court. If someone is caught littering there is an on the spotfine of 75.00.

If you have information on potential offenders or you would like anyfurther information on the some of the ways to dispose of wastecorrectly please contact Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council on01256 844844.

Incidents involving dogs: Police have recently been asked toinvestigate an incident involving a dog biting another dog. Thelegislation under the Dogs Act is antiquated but clear that this is notan offence unless it can be proved the dog is dangerously out ofcontrol. As a prerequisite to any action the dog and the owner/handlermust be identified positively at the time.

Police manage these requirements by logging all reported incidentsand warning offending owners on the first occasion; in anysubsequent incidents this can then be called in. This highlights the

need to report all such incidents to Police.

In the current case enquiries have been completed and owing to thelack of satisfactory evidence, no complaint can be substantiated.

All villagers are asked to refrain from judgement in such matters in theabsence of clear evidence pointing to those responsible.

My contact number: Finally, a very kind resident has given me amobile phone, My new number is 07500 212847.

The Parish Council was approached and a piece of land on the Green in thecentre of the village was allocated for their use and this remains the clubs pitch to

this day.The first committee was set up and Fred took on the role of Secretary, an office hestill holds today and from those humble beginnings Fred has overseen and driventhe growth and development of a very successful junior football club which nowruns eleven age groups involving some 200 hundred players.

Fred was dedicated from the word go and after initially playing friendlies he

applied for the club to play in the Peter Houseman Youth League based in

Basingstoke and has held unbroken membership ever since.

It had become clear to Fred that with the continued growth of the club he wouldneed to take the initiative in seeking to provide better facilities and in 1981 the

plans were set in motion to raise funds for a clubhouse on the Green. Fred and

his committee went about arranging sponsored walks, jumble sales, dances and

coffee mornings to name but a few. After some years, the necessary funds were

raised and with the important input of Chairman Brian Gaiger, who was a Borough

Councillor, planning permission was sought and successfully obtained. Great

credit goes to Brian for his contribution to the club which he served in total for 19

    years.

Building work began in 1985 and completed the following year and needless to

say nobody was prouder than Fred when he greeted World Cup winner Alan Ball

to officially open the building on 6 April 1986. Also among the guests attending

that day was the Mayor of Basingstoke.

Apart from Freds tireless work as the Club Secretary he acted as one of the Team

Managers taking his age group on match days and also a training session during

the week. With the countless hours he gives to the club it is just as well he can

depend on a very understanding wife in Jean Berntsen who has similarly served

the Club from the beginning as Treasurer.

FRED BERNTSEN Football legend of LoddonSports Junior Football Club contributed by GarryWard, team manager.

Fred Berntsen has been a stalwart of boys and girlsfootball in Sherfield-on-Loddon for 40 years and althoughnow in his seventies, remains as active and supportive aswhen he first became involved. It was back in 1970when he made the decision, along with George Gardinerto form Loddon Sports Junior Football Club therebyproviding a facility for their mad keen footballing sonsand their friends to play in their own team.

Fred further enhanced the Clubs status when he instigated and largely organised

the first Presentation of Awards evening in1980 and they have been held annually

ever since. This involves considerable consultation with Team Managers to decide

which player should receive an award; ordering and obtaining of the awards and

which venue to hold the event. In recent years the Presentation has taken place

on The Green with some 400 players and parents eagerly awaiting the names of

the winners. The clubs progress on the field is demonstrated by results in that eve-ry year since 1977 one of the clubs teams have won a competition albeit a league

trophy or cup to proudly display at the event. Fred himself has hosted the majority

    of the occasions.

Fred has brought more kudos to the Club by successfully arranging annual ClubTournaments at the end of each season. The first Tournament is Invitational andsees many teams return year after year to participate in the competition for theirown age group. Fred cracks the whip to ensure that Team Managers and helpers

are assembled on the Green at 6am on the day and organises preparation of thepitches; erection of marquees; manning of car parks, etc to hold the event. Thesecond tournament is In-house and is a fun day involving all 200 Loddon Sportsplayers featuring both girls and boys competitions. Fred takes great delight insetting up the teams and allocates team names which are usually taken from thelower reaches of the Football League. Also getting the kit bags down from theclubhouse attic to find different shirts for each team! Again it is testament to Fredsextraordinary organisation and enthusiasm that these events take place at all.

Some four years ago Fred observed that a number of parents were enquiring

whether their children could join the club even younger than 6 years old. They hadbeen impressed with the sessions that Fred had been giving to the older children

and were keen for the younger ones to join. After consideration Fred felt that there

was an opportunity to start up a new nursery section which was named Lods Tods

and the original managers Steve Allaway and Barry Brewer were instrumental in

getting this going. This was so successful that a capacity of 60 children was quickly

attained and they could all be found being taught basic football skills on the Green

on a Saturday morning watched by proud parents. When these managers moved

to older groups Fred stepped in to take these sessions along with other coaches

led by Sean Callaghan and has continued to do so each year since thereby

concentrating his coaching skills on this age group. He firmly believes that this is

the future of the club and enables Loddon to get youngsters in to join before other

clubs and bring them on to maintain high playing standards in the future.

Freds most recent project has been organising an extension to our clubhouse in

order to provide more storage room for kit and equipment; a larger kitchen and a

toilet for disabled persons. Fortunately, help was provided by Mark Barrett with

drawings and the planning process. A grant was then obtained towards the cost

and a builder engaged. This work was completed late last year and provides agreatly improved facility.

In May this year Fred was at last shown recognition he richly deserves when hewas nominated for an Unsung Hero Award at the annual A Place to be Proud ofAwards ceremony held at Festival Place in association with Basingstoke andDeane Borough Council and Gazette Newspapers. Despite having the most

nominations in any category he was declared winner and a star shaped cut glasstrophy and certificate was presented by host Anne Diamond. As Fred quickly point-ed out he does not do it for the recognition but because he enjoys the involve-ment but all who were there could see that it was a very proud moment.

Very recently the club organised a Fun Day event to celebrate the 40 th Anniversaryof the club and Fred was able to make contact with some of the previous playersand officials down the years to come and mark the occasion. Fred holds a sizeablearchive of photographs and memorabilia collected through the years and thesewere put on display much to the delight of some of the current parents and players

who spotted pictures of their own Dads in Loddon playing kit! The day was agreat success with various attractions including penalty shoot outs; the cross barchallenge; a bouncy castle and football games. This was rounded off by thePresentation of Awards for season 2009/2010 in which Fred again had a large partto play along with current Chairman Marc Mulley.

In conclusion, it has to be said that Fred has worked tirelessly over 40 years tobring the club to the present level and this could not have been achieved withouthis herculean efforts. It is estimated that some 4,000 children have played in theclubs teams and some have gone on to play professionally. One of the girls haseven played for England at Under 21 level.

Fred has a lot to be proud of but all at the Club are even more proud of him andlong may it continue.

THE WOMENS INSTITUTEReported by Ilene Iles

Our July Meeting was our Summer Party Meeting and was opened by ourPresident, Dee Bulpitt. Jerusalem was sung and the Business Meeting tookplace, including a vote of thanks from Helen Rolton to Val Denny for the tripto Milletts Farm, and also thanks from Dee for all who helped in any way withour table at the Fete. This had been most successful. The formal part of theMeeting was followed by a social afternoon in which Members had beenasked to bring along a bloom in a vase (this was subsequently won byEileen Gulston). The Committee provided photographs of themselves aschildren and Members were invited to guess who was who (this was won byDoris LEnfant). We also enjoyed a quiz and a game of last man left

standing, and Tess Morris recited a poem and told us a humorous story.A scrumptious tea followed and the raffle was drawn.

Dee welcomed everyone to our August Meeting and hoped that Membershad not been drowned by the cloudburst as they arrived. Jerusalem wassung and the Business Meeting took place and closed at 2.55 p.m.

Dee then introduced our Speaker for the afternoon, Tania Sellwood aDoctor of Naturopathy. A very enthusiastic and knowledgeable young ladywho knows her subject backwards! We were treated to a very interestingand informative talk. Tania began by telling us that lived in Australia for sometime. When she first arrived, as a way of getting to know people, she decidedto join a group of some kind something with an educational slant. Shelearned about massage and aromatherapy and using the plant world to healthe body. In no time, she said that she was hooked and, in her early 30sshe became a full-time student (fully funded by the Australian Government). She took a 4 year degree course and qualified as a Doctor of NaturalMedicine. Tania then said that she has treated people of all ages from 9

days old to 98 years old. She then, by way of explanation of her subject, toldus about problems with finger nails and what various problems with themindicate about our general health and what foods, minerals and vitamins ourbodies are lacking. Tess Morris said that she had followed Ms Sellwoodsadvice, having seen her in the past, and confirmed that her nails werehealed. Catherine Wright gave the vote of thanks for a very interesting talk.A delicious tea followed and the Raffle was drawn.

    Report by Gill Fearon

    Page 35

To continue our Golden theme this year, we had a golden flower evening inJuly. Each member chose a golden (or yellow!) flower to talk about and as it was

a warm evening, we sat outside in the beautiful garden of White Gables. Thefirst flower was that of Rapeseed, which is grown commercially for its oil (high inOmega 3) and produces the glorious fields of vibrant colour which some peopleare allergic to. We considered the culinary and medicinal aspects of our chosenflowers. For example, the Marigold (from Marys Gold) is used for culinarypurposes in South America and also provides a food colouring. Witch Hazelstems can be boiled to produce a distillate which can then be used to treat cuts, bites and inflammations and the Greater Celandine (which belongs to the Poppyfamily) has been used to treat warts, moles, asthma, bronchitis and whoopingcough! The ubiquitous Dandelion is a source of Calcium, Potassium, Vitamins A,B, C and K and Iron. Its leaves can be used to treat digestive disorders, appendicitis, boils, abscesses and cleanses the kidneys, liver and colon while itsroots can be cooked in oil or dried and roasted to make a coffee and of coursethere is Dandelion and Burdock,a naturally fizzy soft drink. It is possible to use the leaves in salads or make intoa tea, while the flowers can be used to make a wine! You would not wish tosprinkle Buttercup flowers on your salad however! These are poisonous toanimals and have a very bitter taste. Buttercups are a Ranunculus which meanslittle frog in Latin, probably because they often grow near water. One of the

earliest spring flowers is the Primrose, the floral emblem of Devon. It is said thatthe petals open before a volcanic eruption. Sadly it is declining in numbers. TheCrocus, of which there are around 80 species (about 30 of which are cultivated),is from the Iris family. The stigmas of the crocus sativus produce Saffron, a spicewhich, comparing weights, is more expensive than gold! One of the things welearnt was that the Greater Celandine belongs to a different family to the Lesservariety. The Lesser Celandine is a Ranunculus, like the Buttercup, and is alsoone of the early spring flowers often found near rivers. The roots of the YellowIris improve water quality and its rhizomes are used in essential oils. Otherflowers considered included Daffodils (an emblem for Wales and the floral

emblem for Gloucestershire), the genetic name of which is the Narcissus. Wealso heard about the Ladys Slipper Orchid which is very rare, the Water Lily,Cowslips (a wild version of the Primrose) and the Pansy. It was a veryenlightening evening and you might be interested to know that the floral emblemof Hampshire is the Dog-Rose. For more information, look at www.plantlife.org.Plantlife launched its County Flowers campaign in 2002 to mark the QueensGolden Jubilee very apt!Our August meeting was a discussion evening. We put questions with a 60stheme into a hat and then discussed the ones pulled out. Topics included ourfavourite books and TV programmes from the 60s, changes in education and thedemise of letter writing. Our next meeting will be a play reading.
