HANNAH HOBSONLevel 2 Sports Coaching & Fitness Instructing

There was plenty of help and support given by the staff whenever needed. The staff all knew our abilities and therefore pushed us to do over and above what we were capable of. I am really happy that I picked Wigan Warriors for my college education. The course was great, it pushed me to become more independent and allowed me to go out into different schools coaching, gaining experience and learning on the job. After completing Level 2, I was offered an employed apprentice position with the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation. I am now working at Level 3 in Physical Education & School Sport. I still attend lessons at the college as I work though my Level 3 apprenticeship. I am also hoping to do a course that allows me to specialize in coaching children and young adults with additional needs.

JAKE SMITHLevel 2 Sports Coaching & Fitness Instructing

“I attended college 4 days per week for our group lessons, I received 1-2-1 tutoring with any activities that I struggled with and 1-2-1 reviews every few months to view the progress I made throughout the course. The coaching staff help a lot by giving me things to improve on in my sessions. They helped me to be a better coach and person by providing work experience, so I could deliver primary school sessions to kids, I always try to make it more enjoyable for them. A great thing about my course was going out into the different schools, coaching, learning on the job and learning how to control a class. A great experience was working on the Warriors half term camps. This involves working with kids aged 4-14 throughout the week. This is good because you meet lots of new people, you can talk to parents about how their child is finding the camp and whether they are enjoying it or not.

JAMES TEIXEIRALevel 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport

James is currently into his second year studying BTEC level 3 advanced diploma in performance and Excellence and is a robust, hard running back row forward that represents the education academy team and Wigan St Patricks U18s

James “It was a dream come true to represent my country against Scotland and to get on the score sheet, I really enjoy the course with Wigan and hope to secure a place at UCLAN University to study Sports Science next year.

The performance pathway at Wigan and playing for the Warriors Education Academy was a big factor in me choosing to study here, the staff are really supportive and allowed me to represent both the North West Counties and England.”

DANIEL MAKINLevel 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport

“I received lots of help and support from the Warriors teaching and coaching staff. Whenever I needed help with my Level 3 coursework, the teachers would give me advice and were very supportive.

The coaching staff were also supportive, I learned a lot from them when playing for the Warriors Rugby League Academy Team. We had skills training sessions each week and also strength & conditioning programmes to work on in the U19’s performance gym. My coaches would spend time with us all to show us what we needed to do to improve week in week out.

The best thing about my course at the Warriors Sports College where that the teachers were flexible and relaxed and we also had fun at the same time as learning. An aspect of the course I really enjoyed was learning anatomy and physiology because that is exactly what area I want to work in (strength and conditioning).

I am now studying at University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), on a Strength and Conditioning Degree course. I believe that the Warriors Sports College has really helped me on the path to achieving my career goal.”

CAINE BARNESLevel 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport

“I am currently studying in my second year and I am receiving a high quality of life enrichment and personal growth from the education staff and coaches. I also receive a wide range of support from the staff and students, as I am a Wigan Warriors Academy Player I receive the support I need to pursue and excel in my career path. A bonus from attending the college is I am pushed to go forward in my career, and it has allowed me to be able to train with the Warriors first team and gain more experience within my Sport. I enjoy Being able to mix theory and practical sessions together, meaning that I am not just based in a classroom and I am also allowed to interact within the gym and other pupils.

JACK RIMMINGTONLevel 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport

“In regards to Rugby I feel that I definitely improved my own skills through the use of the quality facilities & also the quality coaches that the college team has. The facilities are used by the academy sides as well as the first team on occasions which is a real benefit for your training. The coaches are brilliant and all have experience in coaching and playing at high levels.

The main thing that stands out about the course is the tutors and how they help you achieve the best grades possible. As long as you put in the effort to listen and work hard then you will be in a good position to achieve good grades.

Also, with the class sizes of 15 students, it is much easier to socialise with people and make friends. I interacted and got on well with students from other classes and made friends very easily.

After receiving D* D* D, I am now studying for a Degree in PE and School Sport at Edge Hill University. I was unsure what my ambitions were when I started at college but the course, which involves work experience in this area, showed me that I wanted to become a PE Teacher and be involved in the coaching/teaching of sport to younger people.”
