PursueaBachelorofEducationin one of two ways:Consecutively: This approach allows students to complete four semesters of teacher education after the completion of an undergraduate degree (B.A.,B.B.A.orB.Sc.)orequivalent.

Concurrently:Takenatthesametimeasanundergraduatedegree(B.A.,B.B.A.orB.Sc.),thisapproachrequiresaminimumoffiveyearstocomplete both degrees. To pursue the concurrent program, students apply during the second semester of their first year at Crandall.

BAChELoR of EduC ATion oPTions Consecutive B.Ed. degree ThisisavailabletothoseindividualswhohavepreviouslycompletedaB.A.,B.B.A.,orB.Sc.degree,orequivalent.(Note:EquivalenciesarebasedonCrandall’sstandardsandguidelines.)Itisafoursemester,60credithourprogram.

Concurrent B.Ed. degree Thisisavailabletothoseindividualswhohavecompleted30credithourstowardsaB.A.,B.B.A.orB.Sc.degree,orequivalent,andareinterestedincompletingthetwodegreessimultaneously. The two degrees combine into 180 credit hours, but in certain instances thismaybereducedto168credithoursshouldelectivesbeavailablefromthestudent’sinitial undergraduate degree. The concurrent program begins in the student’s second yearandrequiresaminimumoffouryearsofstudybeyondtheinitialyear,foratotaloffive years. Elementary stream Requirements TheB.Ed.(Elementary)degreeisgranteduponcompletionof60credithoursofEducationcourseswhichincludethespecificrequirementslistedbelow.AllrequirementsforaB.A.,B.B.A.,orB.Sc.degree,orequivalent,mustbecompletedpriortotheawardingoftheB.Ed.degree.Courseworkisrequiredinfourareas: Foundations of Education (18 credit hours), Areas ofStudy(21credithours),Electives(6credithours),andFieldPracticum(15credithours).Aminimumof168credithourswillberequiredtoearnthetwodegrees,butthisispossibleifsomeEducationcourseshavebeencompletedaspartofone’sfirstbaccalaureatedegree.MostconsecutiveB.Ed.graduateswill have completed 180 credit hours. Literacy Education–This course focuses on literacy at the elementary and middle school levels with application at all levels. The emphasis willbeonthedevelopmentofliteracyskills.Studentswillbeexposedtotopicssuchaslanguageacquisition,readingandwritingprocesses,andtheoreticalbasesforinstructionalprocedures.Listening,reading,speaking,writing,andrespondingskills,aswellaslessonplanningandvariedgroupworkwillbeemphasized.Avarietyofresourcesandprocedures appropriate to the students’ developmental levels will be emphasized as well.

Mathematics Education–This course focuses on the investigation of approaches to mathematics instruction at the elementary and middle schoollevelswithapplicationatalllevels.Effectiveusageofvariedmaterials such as manipulatives will be developed through class/group activities, unit and lesson plans, as well as through a variety of classroom discussionsandinvestigations.Anumberofotherareaswillbeexploredincluding unit and lesson planning, integration of math with other subjects, classroom presentations, and current trends in mathematics education.

instructional and Learning Processes: Elementary–This course examines classroom practices, strategies for instruction, organization for instruction,brainbasedresearch,assessment,andteachingframeworksrelated to the elementary grade levels. This course will help teachers facilitatethelearningoftheirstudentsintheearlyyearsofschool,K–5.

Language development–Thiscourseexaminesthesequenceof language development throughout the span of humans’ lives. Emphasiswillbeplacedonmajortheoreticalapproachestolanguagedevelopment and on related areas such as cognition and literacy.

Children’s Literature–Thiscourseincludesclassicworksofchildren’sliterature(suchasGrimm’sFairyTalesandAliceinWonderland),Canadianchildren’sliterature(suchasAnneofGreenGables),andbothTolkien’sTheHobbitandLewis’sNarniaseries.Throughout,attentionwillbe given both to understanding this rich literature and to considering how it might be taught to children.

technical Education at CrandallTheBachelorofTechnicalEducationDegree(B.T.Ed.)isa138credithourprogramintendedtoequipindividualswhopossessprevioustechnicalskillsandtrainingwith21stcenturyteachertraining.

ItispossibletocompletetheB.T.Ed.degreein16monthsifastudententerstheprogramwith69credithoursfrompriortrainingand/orexperience.TheCrandallportionofthisdegreewillconsistof69credithours.Eighteenofthesecredithourswillbeaddressedthroughan18-weekInternshipinaformalschoolsetting,undertheguidance and coaching of a host teacher and Crandall University supervisors.

Successfulapplicantsmusthaveatleasttheequivalentof30credithoursand/orworkexperienceinareassuchasBusinessTechnology,ICT,CulinaryArts,InteriorDesign,Trades,orHospitality.Manystudentswillhavecompleted their education through a Community College or other post-secondaryinstitution(s).Preferenceforadmissionwillbegiventothosewho can provide evidence of successful experience with adolescents.

Q. What prompted you to study abroad through Crandall’s Global Education Experience Program?A.IwantedtostudyabroadtoputmyselfoutsideofwhatIknewas “normal”. This program provided me with opportunities I would not have received elsewhere. I was able to complete half of my internship in Canada teaching high school sciences and then travelledtoMelbourne,AustraliatoteachattheGrade6level.IwoulddefinitelyrecommendtakingadvantageofoneofCrandall’smanyGlobalEducationExperiencePrograms.

Q. how did your experience in Australia prepare you for your career?A.MyexperienceinAustraliaallowedmetotravelandexperienceanotherculture on the other side of the world. The staff at the school I was placed in inspired me, as I got to interact with them and the students each day. My timeinAustraliaopenedmyeyestothemanychallengeseducatorsfaceacross the world. I was able to experience a completely different education system than ours in Canada, which caused me to grow both personally and as an educator.

Q. how did you originally connect with st. Kitts international Academy? A.TheschoolcontactedtheEducationdepartmentatCrandallbecausetheyknewoftheprogram’sreputationintheMaritimesforproducingqualityteachers. I was about to finish my classes at Crandall and the opportunity seemedinteresting,soIheadedtoSt.KittsinJanuary.Istronglybelievethat this opportunity would not have been possible if I had not attended Crandall.

Q. how does a classroom in st. Kitts differ from your Atlantic Canadian classroom experience? A.St.KittsInternationalAcademyisaprivateschoolthatteachesCanadiancurriculum, so I am teaching the same lessons that I would be at home, but the opportunities for me to learn are exciting. I teach students from all over the world and they each have a different perspective on the issues we cover inclass.LivingandteachinginSt.Kittshasinspiredmeasaneducatorbecause I feel that I appreciate the value and power of education more than I did growing up.

Q. What advice would you give someone who is deciding whether or not to pursue a career in Education?A.IwouldtellsomeonethinkingaboutacareerinEducationtogetoutandgainasmuchlifeexperienceaspossible.Lookforvolunteeropportunitieswithin your community and local schools. Most importantly, pursue Educationifyouhavethepassionforit.Itisnotjustacareer,itisalifestyle.AstheysayinSt.Kitts,“Rushslowly.”Weeachhaveourownuniquestoryandweneverknowwhereitmighttakeus.

AnapplicationforadmissiontotheBachelorofEducationprogramatCrandallUniversitymaybeobtainedfromtheEducationAdmissionsOffice.Alongwiththisform,allapplicantsmustsubmitthe following documentation:

1.Aletterofrationalewhichdetailstheirdesire/passiontoteachandthatlinksthatpassiontotheirexperienceswithchildren.Rationalesshouldbetwotothreepagesinlength;

2.ThreeB.Ed.referenceletterswhichassessstudents’suitabilityfor the teaching profession in terms of the student’s character, personalqualitiesandabilitytoworkwithyoungpeople(ReferencesshouldbesealedandsentdirectlyfromtherefereetotheEducationAdmissionsOffice);

3.Officialtranscriptsfromallpost-secondaryinstitutionsattended;

4.DisclosureofCriminalRecordinformation,includingavulnerablesectorcheck;

5.Alistofallpreviousteaching/leadershipexperienceswithchildrenin a resume format;

6.Anon-refundable$50applicationfee.
