Merced College’sBusiness Resource Center is committed to supporting the education, enrichment, and adventure needs of our community . Whether you want to improve your skill set through classes, trainings, or workshops or are looking for personal development, travel, or certification options, Merced College’s Business Resource Center is where you need to be .

Community Services: Provides opportunities for trips and tours, enrichment opportunities, and personal and professional development classes . The offerings are fee-based, not-for-credit ranging from arts to fitness to certifications . We host a wide variety of excursions throughout the year, including national and international tours as well as trips to sporting events or cultural functions . College for Kids: Since 1976 Merced College has offered the summer College for Kids program targeted at 2nd-8th Graders in the community . Classes, aquatics, and sports camps reached an all-time record high this last summer year with over 1,950 enrollments . We are adding new offerings every year and believe we will continue to grow our enrollments each summer . Registrations are now open . Sessions begin and run through June-July/August .

Career Advancement Academy: Provides training and certification programs for students interested in computers in business and medical assisting . These Noncredit educational pathways are designed to provide instructional programs for adult learners to meet the current workforce needs of the community’s businesses and medical offices . Workplace Learning Resource Center: Provides local employers and citizens of the greater Merced area with customized training, leadership, and development programs . The programs offered are functional in context to the job by providing skill enhancement that employees can apply immediately to their job after training . Gateway Adult Education Network: This is a partnership between schools and service providers to improve access and success of adult learners in the Merced County-Chowchilla-Mariposa County region . The Network is governed by a board of representatives from the High School Districts, County Offices of Education, and Community College District in the region . Noncredit: Merced College knows that education does not stop after high school or college . It is a lifelong process . Continuing Education offers Noncredit classes that help your continued growth, whether you want to update current job skills, acquire new jobs skills, or seek classes for personal enrichment . More than two hundred noncredit classes are offered each session at 33 sites throughout Merced County and the surrounding area . Deputy Sector Navigators (DSNs): The Center for International Trade Development (CITD) provides quality training and services to small and medium sized enterprises that are potential or current exporters or importers . Often the this DSN offers business conferences, workshops, and seminars designed to provide information and tools to help capitalize on global business, reference, and referral services, regulatory and operational challenges . ■ AikidoThrough the understanding of the fundamentals of emotional and physical conflicts and by implementing basic Aikido techniques including basic body movement, synthesis of breathing, physical and mental applications, students will gain an overall understanding of the philosophy of Aikido and how it relates to both self-defense and conflict resolution . Sensei’s, Ron Duran and Brandon Wolff-Hunnicutt each hold black belt ranks with over a decade of Aikido practice in this beautiful Japanese martial-art, known as Aikido .

■ Beginning Sign LanguageIn this class you will have fun learning the basics of American Sign Language .  Learn how to communicate with others without even saying a word! Students will learn through playing games, signing songs, and telling stories in this fun and interactive class .

■ Beginning Spring Vegetable Gardening

The class is for beginning gardeners and those wishing to learn more about vegetable gardening . Join the wave of urban homesteading by learning the basics of setting up and growing your fall vegetable garden, with an emphasis on raised bed gardening and growing organic . Topics covered will be site location, soil preparation, seed and plant selection, propagation, soils, fertilizers and mulch, pest control, general plant care, harvest and more . Please dress comfortably as we will be doing hands on projects!

■ Dancing for BirthHave fun learning how all expectant moms (vaginal/VBAC/Cesarean) can move to music, before, during, and after birth, using special dance techniques to get more comfortable during pregnancy, encourage babies into optimal positions, and promote recovery after birth . This class is for community members who would like to participate in a Shakespearean production “Coriolanus”, co-produced by Merced Shakespearefest and Merced College Theatre Arts . Participants will receive instruction as actors, stage managers, and/or technicians . The class will culminate in public performances for a paid audience in January 2018 . ■ Okinawan Karate/Self-Defense

A study of weaponless self-defense and conflict resolution through the practice of the ancient and time tested martial art of Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate . Learn how to prevail and defend against an attacker that may be armed with a weapon . Practice the usage of the body’s limbs, hands, and feet as blocks and strikes and learn how to generate the power needed for self-defense by way of bio mechanics, regardless of one’s size or physical stature . These classes will be taught by Sid Rayford, a 9th Degree Black belt with 46 years of training and his wife, Amy Rayford who is well known in the martial arts community as a female self-defense specialist with 16 years of training . Shorin-Ryu is known to be the “old school” of karate which comes from the feudal era of Okinawan history . This martial art has been around for centuries and is not for competition, but is instead dedicated to surviving diverse attacks .

This course is designed to challenge and enhance the photography and composition skills of each photographer . Together we will study famous images as well as the photographic and design principles that were used to create them . Then we will start

to photograph and create great images . It is neither necessary to own a high priced camera, nor have extensive Photoshop skills in this class . It is more important to be open and willing to experiment and have a lot of fun

■ Technical Office OccupationsThe Technical Office Occupations program is geared toward the adult learner who desires vocational training in a business office setting . In this program students will learn Microsoft Windows 7 as well as Microsoft Office 2010 . Software programs include Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook . Students will also be trained in general off ice procedures and practices .

We are a Certiport Authorized Testing Center . Our certif ications include Internet & Computing Core (IC3) certif ication and Microsoft Off ice Specialist certif ication (MOS) .

Out medical Office Technology course focuses on the duties of an administrative medical off ice professional . Students will learn the Medical Manager Software Program . Students will also learn about the medical setting, communication, managing information, third-party billing, grammar, style, and terminology . Bloodborne Pathogens is a National Safety Council instructor led certification course that helps to safeguard employee who face potential occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials and what to do if an exposure occurs .

In the Medical Assisting course students learn to work in a medical office and clinical setting assistingphysicians with patients and maintaining the office . In the administrative side of the course, students will learn medical terminology, administrative office procedures, the computer program Medisoft, and Electronic Health Records (EHR) . In the clinical side, students will learn vital signs, medications, clinical office procedures, laboratory procedures, injections, and EKG’s .

Students will have the opportunity to gain work experience through an externship .

REFUNDPOLICYFORCLASSES&TRIPSCommunity Services realizes that extenuating circumstances do arise . However, Community Services does not receive any state or federal funding in order to operate . We are a fee-supported entity of the college . Your enrollments pay for the cost of the program and the office support . In many cases we are unable to recoup the costs incurred if you drop a class or trip after the drop date . In regard to this, we have established the following policies:

Class Refund Policy If you need to cancel an enrollment, please contact our office at least 7 days before the start date . You will be charged a $10 cancellation fee per person, per offering, except in cases where our office is responsible for the changes . If you need to cancel 7 days or less before the start date, you may write a letter of request to our Director, Becky Barabé, and these requests will be reviewed for a potential full or partial refund, based on your particular circumstance . Once an offering begins, we will not refund any portion of the fee . If you paid by cash, the refund will be by check and will arrive by mail . If you paid by credit card, the refund will be processed as a credit back to the same card that was used . Refunds take approximately 4-6 weeks to process .

School Initiated Cance llation – Community Services reserves the right to cancel any class . Full refunds are automatically granted if a class is cancelled by our office . Occasionally there may be adjustments to the schedule for a class due to college facilities usage . We will notify participants of any of these changes as quickly as possible . Thank you in advance for your understanding .

Trip Refund Policy If you need to cancel your bus trip, we need to have at least 30 days notice before the departure date to receive a refund . You will be charged a $10 cancellation fee per person, per trip, except in cases where our office is responsible for the changes . If you cancel the trip after the 30 day deadline, refunds will not be given unless there is a replacement for you on the trip .
