Message from president, cii

R Seshasayee President, CII

The youth of the country who embody energy, enterprise and excellence, have a mammoth task at hand. They have to work towards completing an ongoing agenda – A developed India. And, the youth alone are empowered to do it. The Young Indians exactly represent what Margaret Mead said long ago: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” The youth have the best credentials to bring in change. They do not carry the burden of the past. They have the self-confidence to venture, to try the untried. Fear of failure does not stall them. If they can resist settling for anything short of the best, if they are aware that Rome was not built in a day, then they can truly change the world.

For inspiration – and a very practical tip – for the youth of India, I would like to recall the sagely suggestion from President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, who noted that the best way of doing something positive for the country is to strive to be the best in whatever one was doing.

Yi has been able to bring together young Indians from all across the nation and garner strength, develop focus and most importantly undertake a holistic approach to nation building with a ‘We-can We-will’ approach,”. I am delighted to note that the Young Indians led by Mr Narayan Sethuramon, with his competent team has been successful in engaging the youth in the development process of the nation.

Knowledge should be transformed into an idea, in turn to Innovation and finally to enterprise. “If you have a bright idea, you will find money available to support the enterprise”.

I wish the Young Indians great luck in their journey to making a better India.

The Indian youth of today is extremely optimistic about the future, even as they believe

that changes in the social fabric and governance are critical towards changing the world order.

The Confederation of Indian Industry’s Young Indians are intent on, and involved in shaping tomorrow’s India - particularly relevant for a country with one of the youngest populations in the world, with 54% of its population under the age of 25. In fact, India’s demographic assets are at the core of its competitiveness and future potential. The world has started looking at India as an emerging global force of “peace, progress and prosperity”. India is now the laboratory, the shop floor and the back office for global businesses. Meanwhile, more than a quarter billion people have lifted themselves out of poverty between 1980 and 2000. The average Indian can hope to live twice as long i.e., 63 years as compared to his life-span of 31 years in 1947. Technology has percolated down the pyramid, adding efficiency, comfort and confidence.

Message from national chairman, yi

Dear Young Indians,

“Engaging Young India for Building Developed India”

Before we realized it, another work year at Yi has sped past us. At the start of the year, we had identified “scaling up Yi” as the key objective since this was essential for Yi to make meaningful progress and create an impact towards the larger objective of building youth leaders as well as a movement of youth, all engaged towards realizing our dream of a developed India.

We are fortunate to be at a defining moment in time when India is truly recognized as the next great growth opportunity globally, has moved on to a higher plane of economic growth

and is beginning to see trickle down benefits of this growth towards creating a better quality of life across the spectrum of society. However, it is also now recognized and accepted that the pace of these trickle down benefits is simply not adequate. There has to be a concerted action in various spheres towards sustained development leading to “Inclusive Growth” in India. Yi, as an organization, believes that this challenge actually offers a window of leadership opportunity to Indian youth because of the following reasons:

• Youth normally ascribe to the fact that there are two primary choices in life - to accept conditions as they exist or accept the responsibility by changing them.

• Young Indians have a natural mindset that any real growth has to be inclusive for all of India

• Young Indians have a great strength in developing the service economy which provides a tremendous opportunity for all sections of society to participate

• There is not the drawback of suspicion on the motives of young India which older generations faced.

• Young Indians in the 21st century are not burdened with the ideological dogmas of capitalism, socialism and communism.

During the year, Yi made meaningful progress by engaging youth towards an “Inclusive Growth” Agenda for India by focusing on grassroots and participative action in the following areas:

• Leadership development

• Primary Education

• Employability

• Environment

• Healthcare

Towards Leadership Development, Yi organized expert talks, best practice sharing sessions, visits to centres of excellence, meetings with industry leaders and Summits both by itself and jointly with CII.

In the area of Primary Education, the “Yi Akshara” initiative saw rapid growth with 12 new Aksharas being launched during the course of the year, which together with the 7 already existing, have benefited more than 5,000 children. This initiative will see even more rapid scale up during the upcoming year.

In the area of Employability where Yi has a national MoU with Dr. Reddy’s Livelihood Advancement Business School, more than 300 youth have benefited through job skilling and placement.

The Healthcare and Environment areas saw a number of varied initiatives being undertaken across the country, focusing both on awareness creation and positive interventions.

The Yi Net initiative saw tremendous progress during the year with a number of new initiatives across the country. Most significant among them was the visit of 92 youth to a village in rural India for a weekend. These youth were so affected by the lack of electricity in this village school that they went back, raised funds, bought Inverters and went back to the village to give them to the school. This is a classic case of “impacting a difference”. Today, around 3,000 students spread across 35 Nets around the country are members of the Yi Nets and are actively participating in developmental projects.

Yi, this year, actively engaged decision-makers in Government at the District, State and National levels. A number of bureaucrats such as District Collectors, Director Generals of various youth related organizations graced various Yi platforms over the course of the year. The Union Government is beginning to see Yi as a partner with whom they can work on various youth development initiatives.

Yi, along with CII launched the “Integrity India” campaign this year to promote integrity, transparency and ethics in public and private life. Nine programs have been done till date, reaching out to around 15000 people.

On the organization front, Yi launched 8 new Chapters during the work year. As on date, there are 16 Chapters with 730 members. Yi has grown during the year from a City Chapter model organization to becoming a confederation of different types of Chapters viz.

• City Chapters

• District Chapters and

• Corporate Chapters.

Yi has ambitious plans for scaling up membership, chapters and initiatives. A 3-year Plan was drawn up during the course of the year with ambitious scale – up targets in all areas.

Yi has effectively adopted the Balanced Score Card approach for goal setting, measurement and review at all levels of the organization. The year also saw the launch of “Yi Happenings” and “Yi World” as additional communication tools in addition to the Yi Voice, in order to disseminate timely information and other articles of interest to its stakeholders.

This Annual Report captures the major activities of Yi across the country.

As I step down as National Chairman, there is a sense of satisfaction at the growth of Yi during the last twelve months and the achievements during the last two years, though targets in all areas were not achieved in full. I feel enormously privileged for having been involved as an office-bearer in Yi since inception and having worked as part of a wonderful team in converting a dream into reality. I am also grateful for the many new friends that I have made for life.

I would like to place on record the extensive support and co-operation extended by my Vice Chairman, Rajan Navani, all my colleagues in the National Governing Council, all the City Chapter chairs and other office-bearers and the membership of Yi. I would also wish to place on record, my gratitude for the unstinted and excellent support provided by the entire CII-Yi executive team, ably led by Rajesh Menon, Senior Director, CII during my tenure.

I am confident that with the new leadership that is taking over, Yi has strong hands and we will achieve the ambitious plans that have been set. It is now India’s time and Yi will play multiple roles in the transformation of India into a future global superpower.

As always!! I am sure that, We can – We will …

Yi SUMMITSThe Young Indians Summits are platforms where young Indians gather to voice, share, understand and collaborate on issues they feel are critical to India’s development. These issues range from education, infrastructure, information technology, environment, leadership, the Indian opportunity, media and entertainment and many more. These topics of discussion and feedback received then serve as Yi’s future plans of action and focus areas.

Yi Regional Summits

Yi Southern Regional Summit: 14 – 15 July 2006, Coimbatore

59 million Indian children would be out of school. The Southern Region Summit highlighted child labour as a menace in the society and emphasised that Young Indians should act strongly against child labour and partner with NGO’s who are involved in fighting it out. It was felt strongly that India lacks entrepreneurs. With a very large of our population considered “young”, it was suggested that the booming economy of India should produce more job givers as well. Engaging the youth in the development process was yet another major issue of discussion at the Summit.

Yi Eastern Regional Summit: 28 October 2006, Kolkata

India is truly young - with 54% of the population under the age of 25. With a maturing and ever evolving democratic process in India the challenge to ‘foster better economy’ squarely lies on the shoulder of the Young Indian. The Eastern Region Summit shed the spotlight on the role that needs to be played by the younger generation to help India become one among the top three economies of the world by 2050.

Yi Northern Regional Summit: 9 December 2006, Delhi

Today many smart, capable young Indians look go westwards. It is important to motivate and inspire the youth of today by giving them greater exposure to the world-class success stories that are being scripted across the Indian landscape. Providing young Indians with the learning experience to motivate, inspire and empower them to take initiatives and be social contributors in the growth of the country was debated to be the need of the hour.

Yi NATIONAL SUMMIT

2-3 February 2007, Mumbai

At a stage when the emphasis is gradually shifting to knowledge and technology-based industries, this human resource base combined with a favorable labour climate offers ideal conditions for economic growth. The National Summit highlighted the growing divide in demand and supply of skilled manpower.

The summit brought to the forefront the need for vocational training in order to reduce this divide. Emphasis was also laid on the untapped skills and potential among the rural youth. Discussions were also based on how best to motivate and mobilize the rural youth.

The summit also encouraged the Young Indians to take part in the democratic process and contribute to the development of democratic India.

3rd Indo German Young Leaders Forum:

1 – 4 October 2006

The team of the central topic of the 3rd Indo German Young Leaders Forum

(IGLF) was ‘Shared Responsibilities: Business, Society and the State’

Globalisation drives every economy today. Shrinking of time and distance, backed by

the power of communication have forced countries to introduce reforms which lean more

towards privatization and liberalization. This new development has raised questions

about the (new) role of the state and of business as well as the productive interaction of

different social forces. 45 young business leaders from both the countries came together

for the three days to discuss and deliberate over these issues. The Indo German Young

Leaders Forum was a phenomenal learning experience for all participants.

Yi National Retreat: Chitrakoot: 2 & 3 December 2006

Chitrakoot was chosen as the destination for the Yi National Retreat this year. The Deendayal

Research Institute (DRI), which is involved in extensive research and development of nearly

500 villages in the region, provided vital lessons to the Young Indians on ‘Self Reliance’. The

young Indians witnessed with their own eyes impressively successful case studies of women

empowerment, rainwater harvesting, forest conservation, self-employment and horticulture,

besides others. The DRI and Nanaji were huge sources of inspiration, not only to the villagers,

but also to the Young Indians.

Yi FBn Project

‘Make a Difference in India’ – conceptualized by the Family Business Network (FBN) International

and supported by FBN India, CII and Yi – was an opportunity provided to four international and

and four Indian next generation family business members to work in an Indian community. The

objective of the project was to develop a suitable business model for the community with a

view to improve their earning capacity and change their economic status in order to improve

their livelihood. Kathanpatti, a village in Virudhunagar District of Tamil Nadu was chosen for

the study. Four key areas were given focus – Education, Waste-land development, Income

generating projects and Health of the general public were given importance.

Yi Cross Chapter Events

Young Indians from across chapters got together for a couple of days for learning-

based networking events.

n20 Yi Nets launched with total number of 2148 students.

Yi BRIDGE Youth play a very important role in nation building. For youth to take up and discharge their duties as responsible citizens, they need to be included in, not excluded from their community. It is immensely important that the mind of youth is nurtured with the desire to work towards the development of the society.

Yi Bridge envisions bridging the gap between students and the society by involving them in community development initiatives. Yi Bridge also facilitates greater community awareness and promotes social responsibility amongst students by engaging them in a meaningful dialogue through “Yi Net Response” which provides them a platform to present their view on critical issues affecting the development of the society and the country at large.

ExECUTIVE & MANAGING MEMBERS

ExPERIENCE ChERIShED BY ThE Yi ExECUTIvE MEMBERS :

As Executive Members we treasure our experience with Yi this year as it has enhanced

our personality and developed social and improved communication skills.

This exposure has enabled us to act towards fulfilling the Yi vision to involve Young Indians in

shaping India and provide a platform to realize the dream of a Developed India. We as the Young

Executive Members have been given an opportunity to exercise our minds by interacting, debating

and voicing our opinions .This exercise has helped us to brainstorm and work as a team to act and

to think.

A Yi Executive Member Workshop was held on 4-5 February 2007. The workshop got us to discuss,

deliberate and work out the way forward for Yi. The objective of the workshop was to be able to facilitate

skills to implement Yi goals and objectives across chapters. Most importantly, it was the single time of the

year where the Yi Executive Members got to interact, share and learn more about their colleagues all over

India. The workshop was thoroughly enjoyable and educational.

This Workshop was spread over two days. The first day started with few Yi office bearers sharing their

thoughts and perspectives of Yi Executive Members. Mr Narayan Sethuramon, National Chairman, Yi said

that executive members are the key to any chapter’s success. Mr Rajan Navani opined, “The Executive

Members’ involvement in bringing the members together decides the success of the chapter”. Mr Jayadev

Galla, Chair, Yi National District Chapters, Ms Bhairavi Jani, Member, Yi Mumbai Chapter & Chairperson, 3rd

Yi National Summit, Mr Sivakumar Jayaraman, Chair, Yi Hyderabad Chapter, besides few other members

expressed their appreciations towards the Executive Members dedication.

The next day, Yi Executive Members were grouped into four teams and each team discussed on a particular

aspect of the Yi National Score Card and Executive Members made presentations after the discussions.

Points were extensively deliberated and debated and based on that it was decided to prepare the Scorecard

for the next year. It brought out a sense of bonding and teamwork within the members and the executive

members.

In a nutshell being part of team Yi Executive Members has been a learning!!!
