Science is a way of thinking much more

than it is a body of knowledge.

- Carl Sagan

This year in Biology we have been focus-

ing on thinking about relationships. Stu-

dents are constantly thinking about the

relationship between structure and

function. Grade 9 students have been

thinking about the relationship between

seemingly unrelated topics and ways to

make their thinking visible such as con-

cept maps. Students also bridged the

critical and creative sides of their brains

to create mitosis board games. IB stu-

dents have been critically examining dif-

ferent experimental designs as they

create their own experiments. We have

had great discussions and will continue

to think about how the concepts pre-

sented in class relate to our everyday

lives.

How much did we drink? 18,000 bottles of water (16.9 oz)

Nearly 30,000 oz

507 Gallons

100 x 5 gallon water bottles.

25 baths full of water

Weighs the same as a female elephant!

Same as a 4 hr shower!

507 toilet flushes!!!

Our challenge was to be more aware of how much water we drink and maybe, if needed increase our intake.

Water is extremely important for our bodies and minds.

scrum Attention students ages 11-16:

CIS will be competing in an interscholastic

Scrabble tournament on Thursday, 19th March,

from 4-6pm. We are looking to form a team(s)

of 6.

Here is how it works: In this fast-paced twist on the fa-

miliar word game, teams of 6 will try to fill a Scrabble

board with as many high-scoring words as possible in a

limited time. This exciting team game will get students’

minds racing in the search for the best combination of

words to achieve the highest scoring team board. We will

throw in some unexpected challenges along the way to

keep everyone on their toes!

Please talk to Ms. Ashley before February 27th if you are

interested.

CIS READING FAIR MARCH 17, 2015 IN THE ARC

The Reading Fair will be taking place during Reading Week, which is March 16th-21st. More information will be coming about Reading Week in general, but we wanted families to know about the date of the Reading Fair so that they could get started planning. There is more information attached at the end of the newsletter.

A reading fair provides students the opportunity to share their favorite book through a storyboard display. The fair is set up sim-ilarly to a science fair and students may dress up like a character from their story when presenting.

Students and/or families will choose a favorite fiction story and create a storyboard to take to competition.

The project that is sent from each school will be entered into a final competition at Georgetown Public Library on March 21st, 2015. Island‐wide winners will be de-termined by the panel of judges, and prizes will be awarded at the final compe-tition on March 21st, 2015.

CIS STUDENTS ATTEND CAYMAN ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENT SUMMIT by Hannah E.

Students from around the island got the

amazing opportunity to hear Sir Richard

Branson and Paul Lindley talk at Camana

Bay as a part of the Cayman Alternative In-

vestment Summit. Sir Branson was focusing

on conservation and its importance, especial-

ly for smaller islands. He was using his own

island, Necker Island, as an example, which

will be carbon neutral and powered by clean

energy in about 3 months. He remarked that he felt that Cayman Islands could be carbon neutral in

5 or 6 years if the right action is taken. This action could be in the form of the younger generations

starting to care more about the environment. CIS students, Daniel G. and Cory H., showed initiative

by asking questions about conservation and protecting our resources. Sir Branson said, “It’s about

a balancing act and creating something magical for both people visiting and living.”

Moving from outside on the Crescent to inside Regal Cinemas students got the opportunity to hear

entrepreneur, Paul Lindley, talk about entrepreneurship, getting involved in business, and making a

positive social impact. Mr. Lindley is the creator of Ella’s Kitchen, an organic baby food company

that revolutionized the industry by putting food in pouches. Key parts of his talk were redefining the

steps to success for small business, like having a set of core values and beliefs. He also encour-

aged students to “think like a toddler”, by never giving up and having fun when starting a business.

Mr. Lindley has two other companies, Paddy’s Bathroom, which has similar characteristics to Ella’s

Kitchen, but is a line of children’s toiletries. A positive social impact is a key part of Mr. Lindley’s

business, Paddy’s Bathroom will donate clean water to children in Rwanda and The Key is E en-

courages and supports Africa’s entrepreneurship. Mr. Lindley encouraged students to do even the

smallest part to make a change for issues they care about.

Daniel G. remarked, “I think it was a great opportunity for all students to have to hear one of the

greatest visionaries alive talking about ways to improve our beautiful island.”

With Alison T.

What is your background and heritage? I was born in Cayman however, my parents were both born and raised in Scotland. Which countries have you lived in? I have lived in Grand Cayman my whole life. How long have you been living in the Cayman Islands? I was born in Grand Cayman, so almost 18 years. How many years have you been at CIS?

I have been attending CIS since I was in Kindergarten, so almost 13 years. Describe yourself At least a few of your best and worst personality traits) My worst personality trait is that I am a procrastinator. I will go through small phases where I will want to leave everything to the last minute. My best personality trait is staying positive and being open minded. Are you a collector of anything? What? Why? I accidentally became a collector of shorts. I did not realize, until recently, how often I would buy only pairs of shorts. I have about 50 pairs of shorts in my closet. Other than schoolwork and studying, what activities do you enjoy? I enjoy to dance and play soccer. I have experienced many types of dance over the years which include, bal-let, jazz, contemporary, tap, Irish, and lyrical. I also played soccer in 2nd and 3rd grade but then didn't play soccer again until 9th grade and I still continue to play soccer. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why? If I could have any superpower, it would be to pause time and everyone in the world. I would do this so I could sleep longer or do anything that I want to do without wasting time. Ultimately, I would want to delay the time school starts in the morning. You're about to walk the green mile, what do you have as your last meal? My last meal would be from Al La Kebab. From Al La Kebab I would want chicken over fries with sweet do-nair with a side of hummus and pita. What are your plans after you graduate from CIS? My plan after I graduate from CIS is to attend university (still to be decided which university) and to earn my bachelor of science in accounting.
