Though “success” is a subjective concept with no widely-accepted formula for precise calculation, I’m inclined to agree with the late motivational speaker Zig Ziglar, who said success could be measured by the amount of
good you do for others. By that standard, Pitt Community College was eminently successful during the 2018-19 academic year.
I felt a tremendous sense of pride as I took stock of everything the college accomplished. Greater still was the joy I felt thinking about how our educational programs and services have helped people in the community improve their lives and, in turn, helped area business and industry improve their efficiency and effectiveness. Behind PCC’s many successes are administrators, faculty and staff dedicated to serving the community — and doing so with excellence. Their devotion is best illustrated by the three-year commitment PCC made in 2019 to partner with the prestigious
Achieving the Dream National Network in order to improve student outcomes. By doing so, the college sent a message loud and clear that ‘good enough’ simply isn’t good enough.
While much has changed at PCC over the years, our fundamental purpose for being here remains the same. As former PCC President William Fulford concluded in 1965: PCC has “a clear-cut mandate for excellence” and “something special to contribute” toward meeting the region’s educational needs. It is my sincere hope that if you take nothing else from this annual report, you’ll come away with a crystal clear understanding of PCC’s desire to continually improve and offer more and better learning opportunities to those we serve. Our mission to educate and empower people for success is as important and relevant as ever and leaves no room for complacency.
Dr. Lawrence Rouse President, Pitt Community College
FROM THE PRESIDENT
“In this publication, you’ll discover PCC’s achievements were many and wide-ranging. You’ll read about alumni distinguishing themselves in their workplaces as well as current students earning awards for academic achievement and leadership. You will also see examples of the power of teamwork at PCC.”
As a Pitt Community College graduate, serving on the Board of Trustees is an honor. PCC is a special place that has given me and many others in the community an opportunity to improve our lives through higher education. In a little more than a year, PCC will celebrate its 60th Anniversary. The college has expanded since 1961 in terms of enrollment, employees, facilities and programs, but its mission to educate and empower people for success remains unchanged. Today, Pitt Community College is continually demonstrating the power of education to transform people’s lives for the better. We’re a major player in the region’s economy, and this Annual Report to the Community is testament to our contributions toward development of a skilled workforce that attracts new business and industry to eastern North Carolina and ensures our current employers thrive.

Pitt Community College Trustees took a moment during graduation in May 2019 to show their appreciation to an employee who demonstrated outstanding service to the college and community for more than three decades.
During the ceremony, trustees presented a Distinguished Service Award to PCC Vice President of Institutional Advancement Susan Nobles. Making the presentation on the board’s behalf was Miles Minges, who worked closely with Nobles as chairman of the PCC Foundation Board.
“When speaking about the commitment and contributions to the mission of Pitt Community College and the N.C. Community College System, you will not find anyone with more heart, determination, loyalty and passion than Susan Nobles,” Minges said. “… She has been a driving force behind creating an active and visible Institutional Advancement Division.
“… She has led efforts to secure gifts and donations for scholarships, capital projects, and program expansion and growth that supports our students and the college.”
A Lenoir County native, Nobles began working at PCC in 1987 as director of Marketing and Public Relations before she was named vice president in 2000. She was also the PCC Foundation’s executive director and led capital campaign projects and secured gifts and donations for student scholarships and various educational activities.
In 2017, Nobles received the N.C. Community College System’s Staff Person of the Year Award. She retired in July 2019 after holding the VP of Institutional Advancement position for nearly 20 years.
Dr. Dennis Massey Retires from PCCExcerpt from Dr. Massey’s message to the college on June 3, 2018:
‘Over the years, I have used the Janus image or theme at the beginning of the calendar year to look forward and backwards simultaneously, usually in relation to Pitt’s strong foundation and future goals. But the Scholarship Fundraiser Gala in honor of me on May 18 sponsored by the PCC Foundation has evoked personal reflections. I have had almost a 50-year career in higher education which centered on teaching a variety of learners, including secondary teachers in Japan, fifth graders in inner-city Baltimore, inmates at an Ohio prison, and many others before taking on
leadership roles in private universities and then community colleges. This last stage of 28 years with two-year colleges has been an especial delight and extremely satisfying.
Neither teaching nor administration was what I had considered as careers before and during college, but my students and colleagues in various settings have shown me what positive results can occur in places like Pitt Community College, especially in terms of “democratizing” education in the U.S. Looking forward, I am extremely optimistic that the foundation developed here will continue to evolve to benefit our state and local area in vital ways which are dynamic and beneficial to residents and employers alike. I truly feel fortunate to have played a major role along with the President’s Leadership Team, faculty and staff over the past fifteen years in this evolution and look forward to remaining in Greenville and watching the College’s impacts multiply.”

Dr. Lawrence Rouse Selected as PCC’s Fifth President
Dr. Lawrence Rouse began his work as PCC President on August 1, 2018, following the retirement of Dr. Dennis Massey. Prior to joining the staff and faculty at PCC, Rouse had served as the President of James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville, NC, since 2005.
A South Carolina native, Rouse earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Voorhees College in 1978, a Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina in 1992, and a Doctorate of Education from N.C. State
University in 1998. Rouse, who has more than 36 years of experience in community college administration and leadership, received the 2016 N.C. Community College System President of the Year Award. His professional background includes work as Dean of Students at Johnston Community College and associate vice president for Enrollment Management/Dean of Students at South Carolina’s Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC). He also served as Director of Cooperative Education and Placement Services and as an admissions specialist with CCTC.
In addition to his professional service, Rouse has been active in civic, fraternal and community organizations throughout his career. He and his wife, Janie, are residing in the Winterville community.
Rouse is the fifth person to serve as PCC president in the college’s 59-year history, joining Lloyd Spaulding, William Fulford, Charles Russell and Massey.
New Leadership
Cox Named VP of Institutional Advancement
Marianne Cox joined the college in 2011 to serve as coordinator of the VISIONS Career Development and Scholarship Program. She was named the program’s director in 2015 before being promoted three years later to assistant vice president of IA. In her new role, Cox oversees a 19-member staff responsible for alumni relations, fundraising, marketing, media relations,
scholarships and VISIONS. Each year, the division organizes numerous outreach events and fundraisers, including the Down East Holiday Show and Accelerating the Future Scholarship Auction. IA staff also manage the PCC Foundation and PCC Student Ambassador Program.
Sigmon Promoted to Executive Director of the Pitt Community College Foundation
Georgia “Beth” Sigmon is now serving as executive director of the college’s chief fundraising organization. In her new role, Sigmon, who was hired as PCC Director of Development/Campaign Manager in March 2018, works with PCC Foundation Board members on developing and implementing fundraising strategies.
She also oversees IA staff responsible for event planning, alumni relations and resource development/donor data. Prior to working at Pitt, Sigmon spent 15 years with Vidant Health Foundation.
PCC Trustees Select Evans as Their Board’s Chairman
Gary Evans was selected again as chairman of the college’s Board of Trustees—a position he initially held more than a decade ago. Evans, a 1984 PCC graduate with associate degrees in agriculture business and agriculture chemicals, first chaired the trustees board in 2007. Though his first term as a trustee ended in 2010, Evans was back on the board seven years later. All told,
he has nearly a decade of experience on Pitt’s governing board to go along with 16 years of service as a VP with Alliance One and now General Manager of Procurement with Pyxux Agricultural USA, LLC.

Growth & Improvements
PCC administrators sent a clear message about the college’s dedication to improving student success by announcing in January 2019 that the school is now part of the Achieving the Dream (ATD) National Network.
PCC was one of the first members of ATD’s 2019 cohort, along with College of Lake County in Illinois, Hudson County Community College in New Jersey and California’s Sacramento City College. By joining the ATD Network, the colleges have made it known they are bolstering their efforts to help students – particularly low-income students and students of color – achieve
their goals for academic success, personal growth and economic opportunity.
PCC President Lawrence Rouse says being part of the ATD Network “is an extremely high honor” for Pitt and one that will play a significant role in the college’s overall mission to better serve students and assure their success.
PCC Health Sciences Dean Donna Neal helped develop Pitt’s application for ATD membership, along with Anna Jones, the college’s research coordinator. Neal says PCC administrators are hoping the college’s affiliation with ATD will lead to improvement in three key areas:
• Student success outcomes, particularly when it comes to retention and completion.
• Achievement gaps directly related to equity among underserved, underrepresented and under-resourced students.
• Use of data to guide decision- making.
ATD colleges are provided a Leadership Coach and a Data Coach. These coaches are community college leaders who are carefully matched with institutions to provide personalized advice and guidance to build needed capacities, align student success efforts, and support change where it is needed.
Based in Silver Spring, Md., Achieving the Dream leads a growing network of more than 220 community colleges representing 41 states and the District of Columbia. Along with nearly 75 experienced coaches and advisors, ATD reaches more than four million community college students. The
organization is making progress in closing academic achievement gaps and accelerating student success through a unique change process that builds each college’s institutional capacities in seven essential areas.
ATD Data Coach Daryl Davis (left) and Leadership Coach Dr. Mary Fifield (right) presented an overview of the ATD program to the PCC campus at Convocation in August of 2019.
Pitt Community College started a new, short-term Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program in May of 2019 by partnering with TransTech.
The Center for First-Generation Student Success selected PCC to join its inaugural First Forward cohort for focusing on first-generation college students.

2019 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Three years after their first day of high school, the first class of Pitt County Schools Early College High School (PCSECHS) students were seniors when they entered a brand-new building to close out their secondary education careers.
Less than a year after construction began on the Pitt Community College campus in October of 2018, a new home for ECHS opened to students, faculty and staff when their fall semester got underway. It was the first academic year that the school featured students in all four high school classes.
“Our students love having larger classrooms [and] a safer building,” said ECHS Principal Wynn Whittington. “I am excited about the new building
and grateful for such a nice facility.”
The new home for ECHS’s 275 students and 16 faculty and staff members is 13,000 square feet. It features eight classrooms and a multipurpose room.
Pitt Community College held an open house in November 2018 to cut the ribbon on its newly-renovated health sciences facilities and give visitors a closer look at the state-of-the-art equipment used in training skilled health care professionals.
PCC renovated former classroom spaces into a 10-bed simulation hospital, simulation laboratories, an Emergency Medical Science classroom and laboratory, a Medical and Cardiovascular Sonography classroom and scanning laboratory, and a hot lab for Nuclear Medicine Technology.
According to PCC Health Sciences Dean Donna Neal, the project, which included new equipment, cost $1.61 million, with much of the funding provided by Vidant Medical Center (VMC) and the Golden LEAF Foundation. VMC, she said, awarded the college a $500,000-grant to help purchase high-tech patient simulators, while Golden LEAF provided a $200,000-grant. As a result of the renovations, Neal said PCC can serve as many as 300 nursing students annually. She said many of them will eventually join fellow health sciences graduates for work at local health care agencies and VMC, which currently employs approximately 80 percent of PCC’s nursing grads.
On July 29, 2019, a groundbreaking ceremony occurred at the future site of the Eddie & Jo Allison Smith Center for Student Advancement. The center’s first phase will consist of 34,000-square-feet of space for classrooms, conference rooms, a student scholarship office, and the college’s Women’s Resources Center and Veterans Affairs program. The facility will also house the Institutional Advancement Division, which includes the PCC Foundation, Marketing and Media Relations departments, and the VISIONS Career Development and Scholarship Program.

McCraney Became Third PCC Student to Win Scott Leadership Award
PCC celebrated employee achievements with the 36th Annual Employee Appreciation and Recognition Evening in April of 2019 at the Greenville Convention Center.
The program featured college administrators presenting service
awards to 68 employees with a combined 640 years of service. Recent retirees were also honored, and the recipients of several special awards were announced.Five instructors received Faculty Excellence Awards. From that group, Bernadette Kenny, an Anatomy & Physiology instructor, was selected to receive the Joseph
E. Downing Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The 2019 Joan and Ed Warren Outstanding Staff Employee of the Year Award was presented to Rachel Bridgers, who worked as Career Outreach Specialist with PCC Career Services. Bridgers was one of four Staff Excellence Award
recipients eligible for the Warren Award.
Also recognized during the event were three instructors – Jennifer Addison, Elizabeth Cope and Wanda Tenpenny – who received the Faculty Award for Innovation and Engagement, which is decided entirely by PCC students.
For the third time in seven years, a Pitt Community College student received the N.C. Community College System’s (NCCCS) prestigious Gov. Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. Markus McCraney, a PCC Associate of Arts student also taking entrepreneurship courses, was selected for the 2019 Scott Award from a group of nominees
representing community colleges across the state. McCraney, who has a 4.0 GPA, follows in the footsteps of PCC graduates Jason Donica and La’Quon Rogers, who received the honor in 2012 and 2015, respectively. Established in 2004 to honor a former North Carolina governor and NCCCS president, the $1,000-award is presented annually to a North Carolina community college student
for demonstrating leadership on a statewide level, active campus involvement, and the characteristics of a future community leader.
On track to receive an Associate in Arts degree as well as a
degree and certificate in entrepreneurship at the end of the 2019 Fall Semester, McCraney received an Academic Excellence Award from PCC in Spring 2019 in recognition of achievement
and volunteerism. Prior to enrolling at Pitt in 2017, McCraney was a petty officer first-class in the U.S. Navy before he medically retired in 2016.

Pursuing Extra Measures to Benefit Students
Duke Energy/Piedmont Natural Gas Grant Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas awarded PCC a $200,000-grant to connect students with hands-on training and career development opportunities. The funds will support HVAC, industrial systems, welding and electrical systems training along with the Pitt Regional Apprenticeship Program.
Mayne Pharma Scholars Mayne Pharma introduced the first group of PCC students selected for participation in their newly-established scholars program. The students will receive full scholarships for two years (or eight semesters) to train at PCC for careers in the pharmaceutical industry.
PCC-PCS Technical Academy PCC and Pitt County Schools partnered on a pilot program to provide high school students with training in PCC’s HVAC and Computer Integrated Machining programs. The PCC-PCS Technical Academy was such a success, it was expanded to accommodate more students, more high schools and additional PCC curricula.
Career Services Efforts The Career Services Department partnered with JCPenney for the benefit of students preparing to enter the workforce after graduation. They hosted a ‘suit-up event’ after normal business hours, offering PCC students and their supporters as much as 60 percent off career dress apparel.
Clothing Drive After requesting professional men’s clothing donations from PCC employees, the PCC Men’s Resource Center set up a temporary clothing ‘store’ on campus to give students a chance to pick out suits, shirts, pants, ties and shoes they could wear to job interviews.
Food Pantry The college’s Counseling Services Department established an on-campus food pantry as part of its Student Assistance Program (SAP), which was created to help students in need focus on their studies and complete their educational goals. The counseling department has provided food, gas cards, and other basic necessities.
T.A. Loving Signing CeremonyIn celebration of their newfound employment, PCC held a signing ceremony for six CIT students who accepted full-time positions with T.A Loving, a Goldsboro-based commercial construction company. The honorees received ball caps and hard helmets in preparation for their new roles.
Piedmont Service Group ApprenticeshipsA partnership between PCC, Pitt County Schools and Piedmont Services Group (PSG) resulted in an apprenticeship program that gave a select group of Pitt students an opportunity to train with PSG technicians for careers in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning field.

2019 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Serving Our Community
PCC held its first-ever Community Career Fair allowing hundreds of job-seekers to network with representatives from area business and industry. Current students, recent graduates and community members participated. In all, 680 individuals came with resumes in hand to meet with 40 local employers representing more than 175 jobs in advanced manufacturing, business support services, health care, skilled trades and the public sector.
The Health Sciences Division held its 4th Annual Community Health Fair, which featured information booths, displays and basic health screenings. Health sciences students facilitated many of the activities, with support from faculty. In addition to general health tips and blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose checks, the fair included pulse oximetry screenings, information on sleep apnea, and a Pitt County Sheriff’s Department medicine drop.
The 9th Annual 50 Free Back-to-School event took place in Greenville at the PCC Barber School at Altitude Academy. Started nine years ago in the wake of a national campaign against bullying, “50 Free” is held the week prior to a new school year in Pitt County. The goal is to provide at least 50 free haircuts and 50 free backpacks to children in grades K-12, so they can head back to the classroom looking their best.
Minority male high school students came to campus for a series of presentations and workshops intended to help them increase their chances of future success. The 2nd Annual Males Addressing Issues and Needs (M.A.I.N.) Summit, a product of PCC’s Minority Male Success Initiative, welcomed minority males from four of Pitt County’s six public high schools and stressed financial literacy, goalsetting and building character.

2019 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Message from the Foundation BoardPCC Foundation board members are extremely excited about student success—both in the classroom and community. We feel a true sense of pride knowing PCC graduates are working in so many different professions throughout Pitt County and the region.
Looking back on the foundation’s amazing accomplishments during the previous academic year, it is clear those achievements were the result of leadership and support from an active board of directors and PCC Trustees, dedicated employee donors and, of course, the many wonderful volunteers who supported our fundraising events and activities. We sincerely appreciate each and every person’s hard work and dedication.
That said, our work continues, and you can help us continue to grow and support the community’s educational needs. We ask that you take a moment to consider making a financial donation to the PCC Foundation, whether it’s an Annual Fund Campaign contribution, planned giving, attendance at one of our special fundraising events, initiating a scholarship or program fund, or a major gift to name a PCC facility.
To learn more about how you can contribute to our success, please visit our website (www.pittccfoundation.com) or call (252) 493-7287. Your support can make a positive impact on PCC and our community.
Foundation Board Officers (l to r): Randy Collier (Chair), Don Rhodes (Vice Chair), Simone Pate (Secretary), and Ricky Brown (Treasurer)
For the PCC Foundation, the 2018-19 academic year was a time of leadership change, new beginnings and continued fundraising success. It was a year largely influenced by the retirement of longtime PCC administrator Susan Nobles, which resulted in Marianne Cox becoming vice president of Institutional Advancement and my new role as the foundation’s executive director.
Though Susan’s passion for PCC and dedication to student success will be missed, Institutional Advancement and the PCC Foundation are in good hands and remain committed to developing partnerships and securing resources that support PCC students and educational activities.
Between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019, the PCC Foundation contributed $2,138,901.85 toward PCC’s mission to “educate and empower people for success” – and we couldn’t have done it without tremendous support from the community. We’re grateful for every financial donation, in-kind offering, facility-naming contribution, and estate-planned gift our donors entrusted to us and pledge to make the best use of these investments in higher education.
The foundation will need the community’s backing once again in the months ahead, as we raise funds to build the Eddie & Jo Allison Smith Center for Student Advancement. Though most of the funding for that much-needed facility has been secured through our “Accelerating the Future Capital Campaign,” we’re still working to meet our fundraising goal.
As the pages of this annual report show, the PCC Foundation experienced much success during the previous academic year and our future is bright. But, as poet Robert Frost once wrote, we have miles to go before we sleep.
