>>> In Business

As a young child, I loathed August. The month meant back-to-school and that the “there’s nothing to do” were already in full effect. While age hasn’t dissapated my August loathing, I’m much more forgiving when it comes to the month.

In fact, as I consult with a number of small business owners, I constantly advise them to take advantage of the “back to school” mentality, and evaluate their businesses. I believe that as the kids prepare themselves for a new year, so too should a business owner. The back to school season is an opportunity to stock up on a number of business goals.

First, review the goals you set in October, November, or December of last year. Where are you on keeping or accomplishing those goals? Most of the time the answer is, “what goals?” Small business owners get packed with the simple and mundane tasks of owning and operating a business. Unlike your friends and neighbors, you job doesn’t fit the “simple” 9 to 5 routine, and for most, it’s never mundane. You fill your days with invoices, purchase orders, and a subtle, but constant, worry about the next paycheck.

That’s why having goals for your business are important. The goals should follow your 1, 3, and 5 year business plan, and should be adjusted regularly, to avoid stagnation or failure. If you’ve already accomplished your net productivity goal for the year, set something higher for the next four months. If you’re not going to reach your sales goal, take a look at why not, and determine ways to improve your productivity in that area.

The thing with business goals is that they’re set to keep you motivated and to help you continue to love your decision to own and operate your small business. Unlike our naive personal weightloss goals, our businesses, and our personal self-esteem, crave success, even in small measure. Make and keep achieveable, but not too easy, goals for your business.

Second, evaluate your sales strategy for the upcoming holidays, and give away some stuff. Quite simply, my greatest successes in my legal world have come because I have been willing to give away free legal advice. Business owners are always afraid to give away products or services because those giveaways ultimately take away from the total bottom line. Unfortunately though, your ideal customer won’t value your product unless they can see its benefit. As my mother-in-law says, “there’s only one thing better than free, and that’s two for the price of free.” Remember, freebies help, not hurt your business.

Finally, recognize and market to your ideal client. In conjunction with your strategy for September through December, you need to identify and market to your ideal client.

I recently discussed important factor with a recently-solo painter I know. The painter does high-end jobs, using high-end materials. This man was frustrated because he would submit bids for projects and never receive a closing contract. I asked the man who he targeted, and why. He explained that because he was new, didn’t have a large client base, and obviously needed to pay his bill, he was hunting every job. We discussed the jobs and discovered many of them were “not the right fit” to begin with. We quickly narrowed his target market, and discovered by hunting those customers, he could make more money, find continued satisfaction with his job, and provide the quality services his customers deserved.

As your businesses “go back to school” this August, take some time to evalute these three business metrics.

The GarageThere’s been a recent wave of businesses

moving to Edmond from nearby cities. One of the newest ones is The Garage, from Norman. We are no stranger to this establishment, as we have frequented it on a few occasions in Norman and we are thrilled they’ve decided to open up shop here in Edmond.

The Garage boasts a full bar, tons of TV’s, cool Americana decor and some of the best burgers you will ever sink your teeth into. With all their burgers you have the choice of having them made with Turkey, Beef or Bison. We stopped by on opening day and I had the Bacon, Avocado, Ranch burger with Beef. In a word, it was awesome. Definitely one of the best burgers in town, seriously. They make Taco’s too and on our next visit I’m going to try the Fish Taco.

The staff at The Garage is helpful and very friendly. The Garage will quickly become a hot spot in town. Go check them out, they are on Bryant, just south of the Lowes shopping center.

Vin DolceThe Wine Bar 16 S. Broadway in Downtown Edmond

Melanie Chesser, owner of Vin Dolce, opened her doors in Nov. 2011 and to an excited customer base that had been waiting forever for an ambient atmosphere to enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers in Downtown Edmond. Melanie’s mission was to offer a setting to enjoy and sample wine and to offer a selection to help new wine enthusiasts find their favorite. Vin Dolce offers small plates, wine from their “winestations” by the taste, half or full glass or bottle, craft beers and cocktails.

The Signs Of ChangeLet’s face it, Edmond isn’t really known for its bustling nightlife. As little as a year ago, if you were looking for some date night activities your options in town were pretty limited. But now that all seems to be changing and it’s all happening in downtown Edmond. With the addition of places like Italian Jim’s and the Bella Forte Glassblowing studio, The Vin Dolce wine bar, Cafe Evoke and the new location of Paint Your Art Out, downtown Edmond is turning into a pretty happening place.

Page 13: Edmond Active Issue 28

Paint Your Art Out 10 S. Broadway in Downtown Edmond

Renee & Ben Deakle are the originators of the “art entertainment studio” and we’ve loved this concept since their beginning in December 2009. While located north on Broadway, the concept has rooted with Edmond residents and their love for this business and its owners is apparent. Paint Your Art Out has a local artist who leads artist lead paint sessions Tuesday through Saturdays, Jay Tracy, who is as fun as the Deakle’s! Paint Your Art Out’s move to 10 S. Broadway on August 2, 2012 provides all of us in Edmond a perfect area for evening entertainment, amazing ambiance and the creative buzz of what’s to come! Look for boutique finds soon in their lobby, along with larger class sizes.

Jenni and Jason Duncan started out in 2005 as mobile coffee caterers. Their mission was to bring high end & quality coffees to events. It shows off the fun & whimsical attitude of these two creative owners, and offers an affordable & delicious assortment of beers, wines, small plate meals & desserts, and of course coffees. My Pinterest fascination, this year, peaked in the coldest month of January. Our 16 year old master bath wallpaper, with shiny metallic peach stripes

and blinding shiny brass, non removable shower enclosure and whirlpool fixtures were wearing thin on our eyes.

In perusing Pinterest, I ran across a blog, sponsored by Lowes, showing a brass shower door enclosure primed and sprayed with a Rustoleum Metallic-finish spray. The blog had step by step instructions, and a conclusion which seemed almost too good to be true. My knowledge of sponsored blogs had led me to be skeptical of this blogger’s conclusions, for the obvious reasons. After 8 months of contemplation, and much discussion, we decided to go ahead and try the project ourselves, because no matter how hard we tried to ignore the peach floral brassy mess, it wasn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

Being very, very skeptical of the spraying process, we were about to do, I tested some pieces that weren’t being returned to the bathroom. We tried rusted metal primer (a reddish color) and the dark brown metallic spray. Thankfully, we tested it and it

turned out a light milk chocolate color. It didn’t match the fixtures we had selected that included burnished bronze and copper. So we went with the very orangish hammered metallic copper spray instead.

To our delight, the copper paint over the rusted metal primer was an exact match to the copper highlights in the sink fixtures. You might be asking why we decided to paint the enclosure and some fixtures and the answer is: Cost. For a shower enclosure the size of ours, the quote we received for a basic chrome shower enclosure started at $1,100. And since our shower enclosure was in perfect condition, this was a less costly cosmetic fix. And again with my Pinterest fascination, I had even tried to remove the brass finish with a few topical suggestions by bloggers, and this brass enclosure refused to let go of its brassy finish. The fixtures on our whirlpool tub, for some odd reason, are not removable and the brass finish was corroding, making them candidates for this treatment, if only for the anti corroding benefits of the primer.PREPPING, PRIMING & SPRAYING METAL SURFACES

To be clear, we followed the instructions on the primer can and

paint can very closely, including making sure that this process would be appropriate for this application. Once we were sure of this, we started to prep the surface by very lightly sanding the metal surfaces; we cleaned it up with soap & water, and let it dry. While it was drying we taped off all surfaces not being sprayed, then cut drop clothes to size and secondarily taped off all glass and all surfaces. We then sprayed the primer on all metal surfaces we would use the Copper Hammered Metallic paint on. You can spray the paint almost as soon as you apply the primer, but that is up to you based on your ventilation conditions.

Disclaimer 1: Drop cloths are your friend. Drop cloth every single surface you can think of. We had a fan blowing during the priming process, preceded to primer the tan carpet in neat little red squares, all due to the fan slightly blowing the drop cloth around. After 3 tries with my carpet cleaner, the carpet is finally tan again.

Disclaimer 2: Ventilation and Masks. If you do not have a properly ventilated space (like us), use a mask and attempt this project at your own risk. Open every window and door in your home, use all fans available to you and start this process in the

early morning to allow for full ventilation before you need to shut your home up.

Disclaimer 3: Be careful of your spraying technique, as drips will occur. You can sand the area of drips, as we did, and respray. It will just produce a more hammered appearance.

Disclaimer 4: Don’t be impatient in removing tape. Yep, it happened to us and we waited the 48 stated on the can for drying (deadline for shooting after photos for this story). In a lesser ventilated area, the spray will not cure in 48 hours and my personal suggestion would be to wait at the very least 4 days and still be very careful. On the removable parts of the whirlpool tub, these parts dried outside and were fully dry before placing back into the tub, with amazing results, and no chipping so far. The fixtures on the tub, as well, have not chipped, either. However, the bottom edges of the shower enclosure did peel away when the tape was removed at exactly 48 hours, due to the paint still not having dried fully. After 1 week of showers, there still are not any other areas where the paint is coming off, to our complete surprise. We will have to go back and re prime & spray the sections at the bottom that peeled, due to tape removal.

Page 20: Edmond Active Issue 28

>>> My Home

Overall, this is one miraculous treatment. We used 3 cans of primer and 3 cans of spray paint to cover every part to our whirlpool tub and shower enclosure, and for only $42. I’ll let you know if one day we have copper paint flowing down the drains, but as of this writing… nothing but a beautiful result!YOU CAN PAINT OVER WALLPAPER?

I checked with numerous people, designers, painters etc. over the years about what to do with my bathroom’s wallpaper situation. Not only did I want the peach metallic striped paper gone, but there was a very well pasted layer underneath consisting of mauve & blue flowers in the same exact pattern. Our attorney and friend gave us a fantastic tip of spraying apple cider vinegar (which worked well in my kitchen on 1 layer), letting it soak then peeling, but in the inconspicuous area I tried it on in the master bathroom… it peeled the sheet rock. Oops. So after speaking to so many, and after numerous hours of research, I decided to paint over it. I had been asked by many, ‘You can paint over wallpaper?’ Yes. But that came with prep, as well. We sanded down the seams lightly, with fine sandpaper, and we sealed anything that was loose. Like I said, both layers of wallpaper were amazingly well applied.

We used Glidden’s Duo Eggshell finish, from Home Depot, which consists of primer and paint. This process went very quickly, with the exception of our black lab walking through the paint tray and then submitting when we gasped with horror, to which he just laid his entire body down in the paint tray, after shaking his feet wildly to get it off. This cost us a day, but what is painting without a priceless story like this to tell. And yes, this paint comes right out of the carpet, if you steamclean it while it’s still wet. It will however, come out of the carpet even when dry if you scrub & clean often.

We purchased 2 gallons of paint for a total of $46 and we still have a half gallon left over. Not bad for a room this size and the difference is astounding.IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS

We replaced both chrome & brass faucet fixtures with oil rubbed bronze fixtures found at Lowe’s, totaling $176.

We replaced the brass knobs & pulls with oil rubbed bronze replacements from Home Depot, totaling $28.

We changed the brass doorknobs to oil rubbed bronze knobs from Home Depot, totaling $46. We didn’t change any of the hinges as the current hinges are all dark brown and they can be changed at a later date for the purposes of keeping the cost of under $500, and once you change

the knobs & pulls, the old darkend hinges no longer stand out.

For the final finishing touch, we changed out the 2 old brass Hollywood lighting fixtures for 2 beautiful oil rubbed bronze fixtures found at Lowes, totaling $156.

As you can see, the change from an outdated master bath to a crisp, clean spa like master retreat took only 7 days and for $494. If you want to do all of this and you already have light fixtures you really like, just not the metallic finish, consider priming & spraying them for a full custom finish and the project is then under $340.

Overall, this project was well worth the effort, has the maximum affect we were aiming for, cost 1/3 the price of a new chrome shower enclosure. Hopefully this project will give you some inspiration for updating a favorite space in your home before your holiday visitors arrive!

Concussions are a serious problem in football. There can be serious and long lasting effects from concussions depending on the severity and number of concussions a player receives during their football career. There have been steps taken to improve player safety through helmet design, rule changes and teaching proper technique, but concussions will still be a part of the game.

Edmond’s Edmond Physical Therapy has been providing athletic trainers to all the area High Schools for years. However, starting with this season they have begun baseline concussion testing with all the football players.

To better understand what this means for our high school football players, we sat down with Scott Delcamp, who works with Edmond North football team as their Athletic Trainer, to get more information on baseline concussion testing.

What is baseline concussion testing? The baseline concussion test is just another diagnostic tool to

help us decide return to play criteria. It doesn’t help diagnose the level of concussion, that’s up to the doctors. By doing memory checks and balance checks, those tools help us determine if there is a concussion. But when the symptoms go away and the balance returns, this gives another tool to tell us that the brain is working properly. It’s just a series of tests that we do. We baseline test the entire team before the season starts. It’s broken up into 9 or 10 different games; some are memory, some are reaction time, some are deductive reasoning, some are simple math problems. Each of those tests checks one part of the brain and gives us a score. If there is a concussion later, we can test them again and get an idea of what part of the brain has been injured.

It seems like the discussion of concussions in football is just now getting ramped up, even though it’s been prevalent in the sport since day one. Why do you think that is?

It all stems from what we see on TV with the NFL. There’s lawsuits going on with them from their older players. It’s just a raised public awareness. A few years ago it was heat and hydration. Before that it was ACL’s, I guess. Every few years there seems to be a hot topic. It doesn’t really change what we do. We’ve always done the same thing.

A lot of times when a player takes a hit to the head and gets dinged, they don’t say anything about it, because of the fear of getting pulled out of the game. What do you do about that?

Most of them do. We tell them that even if you think it’s nothing, we need to have the team doctor check it out. You can tell when there’s a concussion, most of the time. You’re right about the very minor ones. But you have to have a good relationship with your athletes. You got to have them trust you. We have to educate the guys that it’s more important than missing a play here or there, or a game. They have to think about their future.

How long have you guys been working as athletic trainers for the high schools?

Our company has provided athletic trainers since the late ‘80s. When Edmond went to 3 high schools, we picked up the other two. I’ve been at Edmond North since 2000. We also have two other guys that go to Memorial and Santa Fe. We’ve always had a working relationship with the high schools.

How have the coaches reacted to the concussion testing?

They’re great. Sometimes it’s tough to work in the baseline testing. Ut takes away practice time and meeting time. You have to figure out when to steal their athletes for an hour or an hour and a half. they’re very responsive to findings and data out there about concussions. I haven’t come across the old way of thinking where it’s nothing and they can play through it. Most of them are aware that this is information that we didn’t have 20 years ago and we need to take concussions more seriously.

What about the players? Play time in high school is very important. Have you ever had to bench a player because of a concussion and what was the players reaction to it?

Oh yeah, I have. Most players are fine with it. They know when they’re messed up. When you have a concussion, you don’t feel like playing football. You may want to, but you have headaches, you can barely walk a straight line. It’s serious. There is a range of emotions they go through and it’s something they work through. But it’s usually not that big of an issue.

What are the different levels on concussions? There are different people out there who have different data on the

level of concussions. Basically, all that is decided by our team physician. As far as we’re concerned, a concussion is a concussion. We let the team physician decide what grade he wants to put on it and when they’re going to return to play. That’s their decision. We have some regulations in place that any time we think an athlete has a concussion, he has to see a doctor and they have to be evaluated. That has to come back to us, in writing, from the doctors office. It’s not a decision we make, it’s not a decision the parents make. They’re out, as far as we’re concerned, until we see it in writing from a doctor.

What about cases where you have a player who has been concussed multiple times or they are prone to concussions?

If there is a situation where a player has multiple concussions the physicians will recommend a neurological evaluation. It also depends on how much time has passed between concussions. Once you start getting multiple concussions, the seriousness goes way up. We’ve had athletes with multiple concussion who have given up collisions sports.

The Edmond Memorial Bulldogs were the odd dog out last fall. A rollercoaster ride of a season left them just 3-7 and watching the playoffs at home. For Justin Merideth,

that wasn’t good enough, but the focus to get back to their winning ways is in full swing.

With seven home games and the addition of Deer Creek to their schedule the Bulldogs have reasons to be optimistic heading into this season. The talent level is there as multiple players are competing for starting positions leading up to the opener at Wantland Stadium against Edmond North in the first installment of Edlam.

“We’re a little more talented this year, but the talent is young,” Merideth said.

The Bulldogs inexperience caught up with them last year losing their first three games of the season. However, Memorial swiftly turned that around and won three straight.

“We got our confidence going,” Merideth said. Merideth added that losing the final four was simply that they played four really good teams.

The Bulldog head coach is excited about the opportunity to have a young team with this kind of talent. Merideth said they are young but very talented and very savvy, and that they might not know any better other than to just go out there and get it done.

“They haven’t learned any bad habits yet, and that’s a good thing.”

The quarterback battle heated up with the temperatures this summer and no announcement was made on who would be taking the snaps in week one.

“Everybody stays very competitive if they don’t know who is going to start,” Merideth said. “They see a kid start to get more reps than they do or they see us praise a kid who hadn’t been getting the reps, they see that, and they work harder.”

Merideth listed five quarterbacks on his roster including senior Chandler Henderson (5-11, 165) and junior Luke Booker (6-2, 170). Three sophomore quarterbacks are also driving the competition.

Senior Daniel Smith (5-9, 170) and juniors Waylon Anderson (5-7, 160) and Jake Mammen (5-11, 185) are three Bulldogs who will touch the ball out of the backfield at a position where Merideth again sees intense competition.

“We are smaller in structure, but we have three of the ten

strongest guys on the team,” Merideth said. With more seniors than there are positions on the offensive

line the Bulldogs have an opportunity to use this as a foundation to scoring more points this season. The remainder of the “big guys” on the team are not actually that big but are quick and talented and could provide a boost for the Bulldogs.

Defensively for Edmond Memorial goes the same as the offense. Not just because most of the kids playing offense will remain on the field for defensive assignments but also the fact that the competition amongst each other is fierce and is building up quite a front.

“They are athletic, bigger kids, extremely hard working and football is important to them,” Merideth said. “We’re going to work them hard, and so far they’ve responded very well so we’ll let them play and see where they’re at.”

Clogging up the middle of the field is a regular assignment for Brett Reid. The almost 300 pound junior defensive lineman will face a lot of double teams this year at the defensive tackle position of Merideth’s 4-3.

“If they don’t double him, he’s got to make plays,” Merideth said adding, “He’s a great rusher.”

Behind Reid is the tightest competition amongst the Bulldogs. As many as six linebackers are competing for a starting position this fall.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had six that I could plug in and know they were going to do fine,” Merideth said.

Merideth has about 14 kids who can play the controlling middle part of the defense. Half of them can start and this is a big bonus for Memorial. During the current four game losing streak for the Bulldogs, they’ve allowed more than 100 points. If these linebackers play smart football that number can and will go down in a hurry this season.

Junior Ashton Antwine (6-0, 165) and senior Sam Kreutzer (6-1, 175) are a pair of receiver / defensive back combos who provide much needed experience to the back end of the Bulldog defense.

“We’ve just got to get better and win games,” Merideth said. “A successful season is if we get better every week, that’s success.”

The Bulldogs can get better every week and have this summer. The test starts Aug. 31 versus the Huskies at Wantland Stadium.

The fall of 2011 will long be remembered at Edmond North high school. For the Huskies, it was their most successful season in its brief 17 years. Jeremy Dombek

entered season number four at the helm and it wasn’t long at all before his kids were winning, and winning regularly.

“We’re trying to build a winning program,” Dombek said. The Huskies marched their way to an 8-2 record and a trip to the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. After a win in the first round, eventual champion Tulsa Union defeated North by just a single point.

“If it does, that’s great,” Dombek said regarding whether losing to the champ will change how his team approaches this season. “We’re just going to keep working to get over that hump.”

The work to get over that hump began in the spring with quite a few familiar faces missing. Graduation cut the Huskies team in half and Dombek said about his new group that, he can’t wait to see how it goes. The 2012 version of the Huskies features half as many seniors as last years.

“This team might be more athletic,” Dombek said. He added that his last group of seniors were great at studying film, good a practicing and had an extremely good work ethic, all things that will go a long way on the field.

This season on offense, the new face taking snaps will be senior Luke Hoskins (6-2, 200). Hoskins got in the game last season, seeing minimal action. The action that was seen by the Husky faithful was successful action. Hoskins threw 15 passes as a junior and completed 15 passes. Hoskins accounted for more than 300 yards in those passes and is ready to make his mark on the Husky program.

“His ability to throw the football is what will dictate how we’ll do.” Dombek said.

As he goes, we go, can be a risky philosophy on offense. The Huskies will balance the risk with a committee of running backs including former Edmond Memorial Bulldog, Michael Farmer. Farmer might be the most physical of the quartet of running backs expected to see time this season. That quartet also includes state qualifier in the 100-meter dash Ezel McIntee.

Senior Marque Depp and junior Lindell Tate could also be handling duties on offense for the Huskies.

The offensive line features a group of kids who do have starting experience. Three of them saw action last year and that provides value in a much needed position for the Huskies.

“You have to work with what you have,” Dombek said. He added he likes to have experience on the line if he had to choose.

Leading that line is the 6-2, 300 pound center, Heath Newland. Newland is highly touted and has a good chance to play Division I Football next fall. But for now, is focusing on leading the Huskies to a better season.

To Newland’s right are two seniors, Kaleb Prough (6-4, 270) and John Tygret (6-0, 245) who both had the opportunity to start last season. Tygret got the call in the State Quarterfinal matchup versus Union.

On the defensive side of the ball this season, there are many questions to answer but there are just as many reasons to feel confident about North. 2011 was statistically the best season ever for a Husky defensive unit.

Opponents in four games never found the end zone last season, which became a new Husky record. North also set a record for fewest points allowed per game as the other eight opponents didn’t find the end zone very much at all.

“We lost eight starters on defense from last year,” Dombeck said. But he added, the ones playing for this year’s Huskies have played. “We rotate so much, they’re new, but they’ve played.”

Brock Byford (6-2, 225), is the senior linebacker that has been in the starting lineup since his sophomore season. Alongside him since that time has been fellow senior, defensive back Curtis Woods (5-9, 170). Byford and Woods will help transition the new starters into the lineup. Farmer will play both ways for the Huskies and Jarech Page could too. Page also will lineup as a wide receiver this year. There are many more looks the Huskies can go with defensively and Dombek praises his coaches for that.

“The Defensive coaches do such a great job with these kids.”

The depth will once again be there for the North defense which will help in them stay fresh and keep up with all that 6A-3 has to offer.

There are many reasons to look forward to the 2012 season for Husky fans. They have a quarterback who can chunk it with the best of them. The running game should always be fresh and every player on the defensive side of the ball should be making tackles regularly.

There is no reason we shouldn’t be talking about the best season in North Football history again next winter.

What a season it was for the Wolves of Edmond Santa Fe in 2011. It was the biggest turnaround in the state as Lance Manning led his team from a 1-9 season, to

a 10-2 campaign. The change in ways last year has many people thinking this year is going to be a great year for Edmond.

The Wolves will get the fun started in a hurry as they travel to Midwest City on a Thursday for the first game of the season. Midwest City is a favorite in 6A-3 and Santa Fe the favorite in 6A-4. The two schools are the only non-Tulsa schools considered to have any kind of chance to go for gold in 2012. Something that hasn’t been done since 1995 when the Bombers from Midwest City won their second in a row.

Offensive firepower is on hand for the Wolves and will be in the hands of junior quarterback Justice Hansen (6-3, 190). Hansen is highly touted, heavily recruited and could be the best quarterback in Oklahoma very soon.

“His team believes in him,” Manning said. “That’s important.”

With the whole team behind Hansen the possibilities are endless. He has the ability to run the football, 500 yards and eight scores as a sophomore, though Manning says they won’t play into that scheme as much. He has the ability to throw over most secondary’s, 25 touchdowns and more than 2,500 yards. And, he is very accurate, only eight interceptions.

Part of that team that stands behind Hansen is the talented senior running back, Phillip Sumpter (5-9, 180). Sumpter is athletic and very strong and doubles as another throwing target for Hansen. Sumpter compiled more than 1,000 yards last season rushing and receiving while scoring 12 times.

Sumpter will help with the receiving duties along with junior Cameron Westbrook (5-11, 170), senior Trevan Smith (5-8, 170) and senior Dale Jefferson (5-8, 165). A lot of screens as well as deep balls will go to these guys and defenses will have trouble with that all season.

Jefferson racked up more than 600 yards on offense and reached the end zone nine times. Smith grabbed one more score on more than 500 yards.

As far as the offensive line goes the Wolves will be relying on kids who are new to playing time. Graduation took a lot from

Santa Fe and Manning recognized that.“The offensive line will have to get better.” Manning said.Manning added that with this line, they are smaller but faster

and more agile, which will allow them to run better.“We have a chance to be really good on the offensive line.”Manning added another part of his team that has a chance to

be good, stating that his defense has a chance to be special this season. This from a team that scored more than 37 points per game last year, which was second all-time in school history.

Heading the defense will be another highly recruited player for the Wolves, senior safety Khari Harding (6-0, 205). The hard-hitting Harding punishes receivers and running backs that come his way and his play has drawn interest from Division I schools.

“He makes the big plays, and that draws attention,” Manning said. Harding made three interceptions and 71 tackles as a junior.

Manning raved about the progress Harding has made this offseason. “Fundamentally, his grasp of the game, knowing where to lineup,” Manning said about his improvements. Manning added that Harding is more physical too.

Smith caught another four passes from opposing quarterbacks last season and alongside Dhaniel Bly, the secondary for Santa Fe is set to give a lot of fits to opponents.

Sumpter not only punishes linebackers and defensive backs that get in his way, but like Smith, punishes opposing receivers and running backs.

Santa Fe versus Midwest City on opening night is sure to be one of the best games in 6A all season. The excitement starts in week one and doesn’t stop. After a trip to Yukon, the Wolves will make their first Edlam matchup with North, and then they host Southmoore.

“It’s a great way to start the season,” Manning said. He added that he didn’t mind playing those games early because he knows how it will prepare his team.

Edmond Santa Fe has the talent to compete with anyone in the state. From week one until their finale in December, every game should be interesting and the Wolves should be in the game every time.
