It is with great pride and privilege that I take over the reins of the Swinderby Link Up, a village magazine that can only be described as a stalwart of our community (it - not me!), and a piece of our heritage. WHAT GOES ON IN SWINDERBY?

SCRABBLE The Scrabblers meet every other Tuesday in the Plough at 7pm. We feel very welcome, a lovely log fire, ’bit of banter’ We usually play 2 games, ’nothing serious’ put the world to rights, home for around 9.30pm. We range in ages & ability but always have a good time! See the Plough page to find out when the next meeting is.

CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup.

COFFEE MORNING There is a coffee morning every Monday at 10.30 am in the Church. All welcome for coffee and a chat. A great way of meeting new people.

VILLAGE CARE Are you unable to drive and need to get to the medical centre or dental practice in Collingham, Bassingham medical centre or to Newark or Lincoln hospital? There is a team of friendly volunteers who will drive you to the above places for a small fee. You do not have to be elderly to use this service! The service is for Swinderby residents only, the charges are as follows, Collingham £1.50, Bassingham £2, Newark £4, Lincoln £7.50. This is for the complete journey. Other hospitals considered, price dependant on distance. We also cater for optician appointments. Call Susan Brook on

BOOK CLUB The book club meets every six weeks or so. Members read and discuss the books. It’s very informal and a great way of coming across new authors. However, as we meet in each other’s houses, there is a limit on numbers. The current one is full but there is a waiting list. Or how about setting up another group? Either way, phone Mikela on 868041 and talk to her about it.

FELLOWSHIP LUNCH This takes place on the first Thursday of each month in the Village Hall. All ages are welcome and for £3.50 you will receive a hot meal, with sweet and cheese. You can just turn up, but it would help the organisers if you could let them know that you plan to attend. The people to contact are Michelle Boddy on ?or Doreen Porter on .They are keen to welcome more people to the lunches.

GOOD COMPANIONS Swinderby Good Companions Club promotes social interaction and friendship for the senior citizens of the village. Regular monthly meetings are held in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm on the second Thursday of every month. Games are played and afternoon tea is served by volunteer hostesses. Outings are organised during the year along with an annual fund raising garden party.

BOWLS CLUB See the Bowls Club report during the Bowls season.

PRESCRIPTIONS This is a service only for people who are unable to get to Collingham to collect their prescriptions. The prescriptions are delivered once a week, on a Friday and the pharmacy must be asked to put it in the Swinderby bag. Susan Brook () has now taken over this service. Although prescriptions will be delivered on a Friday, she cannot guarantee a particular delivery time.

Our New Website I have taken the liberty of setting up a Swinderby Link Up website.

www.swinderbylinkup.co.uk

Here you will be able to download the latest editions of the magazine, but more importantly and useful hopefully, is the calendar. The online calendar is sync-able with digital calendars, such as Google calendar, so you need never have to check what bin day it is again.

Art on The Cover Are you handy with a pencil? Skilled with a brush? Got skills in other areas like felting, crochet, sewing, tapestry or any other medium? Would you like to see your work on the cover of the Link Up? Open to both children and adults alike—I’d love to put your artwork on the cover. Please email me at [email protected] or pop your work through my letterbox appropriately named and addressed so I can return it to you. I may have to be selective as there are only so many issues per year—I hope you’ll understand.

History of the Village

Please continue to submit your stories and photographs of life in Swinderby. They are so lovely to read and reminisce. I haven’t any to publish this month so had a raid through mum’s photo tins and found pictures of some Maypole dancing at the school. If you would like to tell a story but don’t quite feel you want to write it yourself that is not a problem—please get in touch anyway and I can help.

CHOPS REPORT We seem to be living in unstable times with North Korea and Syria playing a key role in the world’s instability. Oil prices initially increased as a result, but have now edged slightly down. They are still higher than at the time of my last note resulting in heating oil around the 40p per litre mark. (+5% VAT) at the time of writing.

There will be an oil delivery into the village on Friday 28 April 2017. The subse-quent delivery will be Friday 18 August 2018. Although this seems like a long gap, most people will be greatly reducing their central heating usage in the very near future – we hope!

Please let me have your orders no later than SUNDAY 23 APRIL 2017. I have

brought forward the deadline by 1 day to facilitate deliveries. This is a permanent

change.

NOTES FROM A SMALL PARISH - APRIL 2017

Public Forum A couple of parishioners attended the meeting this evening with a range of issues to put before the PC. First was Mrs Sandra Troop of Green Lane. Her planning permission to build a house in her garden to house her family had been turned down as NKDC regarded the plot of land as open countryside and not her garden. The PC are in support of the plans as recent reports have pointed out that it is becoming increasingly more difficult for families of people living in rural communities to find affordable accommodation (www.feantsa.org Housing-led Solutions to Homelessness in Rural Areas and webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk Homes for the future: more affordable, more sustainable). With this is mind, Mr Richard Cutler of Bloombridge (more from him later), suggested that Sandra should reapply her application under the new Lincolnshire Local Plan (to be adopted this month) that seeks to address that exact issue. The PC pointed out that they did not comment on the original plan as the form asked if we had any objections to the planning. The form does not, however, ask if we support the plans. If Sandra were to re-apply the PC said it would comment on the form and show their support for the project. Sandra also said there was a problem with speeding on Green Lane and pointed out that cars were travelling both to and from the A46. This lane is not meant to take traffic joining the A46. The Chair asked the Clerk to contact the Highways Division and ask if they could put up some “No Entry - Access Only” signs. And finally she pointed out that Green Lane was becoming a magnet area for flytipping. The PC instructed the Clerk to look into purchasing a new litter bin. Mr Steve Brooks said there was also a problem with speeding on the High Street and said that on one occasion he saw someone driving up the road whilst speaking on their mobile phone. Although he had an independent witness, the post lady, when he reported the incident to the police they said that they couldn't do anything unless he had a clear picture of the driver, the phone and the registration plate. The PC has in the past distributed some speeding stickers around the village, with priority given to those on the approach roads into the village. These have proven popular so the Chair suggested we get some more for the rest of the village and I was tasked to get them. Update from Produce World Mr Richard Cutler of Bloombridge (the consulting firm working with Produce World) attended the meeting to give us an update on what is happening at the site. A planning application has gone in for 120 houses, around 20 sheltered houses, a village green area and parking for around 30-40 cars with a zebra crossing going to the school. However, the PC were not happy to hear that Kisimul School had approached Bloombridge with a proposal to buy a part of the former vegetable processing site to build two more dormitories as we had not been informed of this. Mr Cutler said he would get back to Kisimul and keep us informed on the progress.

Street Lighting On the 22

nd of March I got a very short e-mail from LCC

Highways saying “All necessary work has now been carried out and no further action is planned”. Having had a cycle round I can confirm it has all been done (even the signpost at the approach to the railway station has been up righted) but we have not been given the all new bells and whistles LED lights that they had been lauding on about. I suspect they still have lots of old stock light bulbs that they need to use up before they swap a lamp out. Anyway, if you have any problems with street lighting (or any Highways issues really) you can call them on 01522 782070 (8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday) or call me and I'll get onto them. Update on the History Plaque Cllr Geoff Lloyd wasn't at the meeting, as he was attending a Cluster meeting on the PC's behalf but through a series of e-mails (see, we don't just work one day a month) he managed to give us this. All the text and pictures have been collated but now the firm that produces the plaques do not do the artwork. They recommended a firm up in Liverpool. Geoff suggested that we employ the talents of a local man, we were happy to do this and Geoff has agreed to approach him. (You may have seen his work before, he designed the new PC logo, a copy of which is at the top of this page) Feral Cats - An Update I had a call the other day from Lucy Avery of Cats in Crisis. She wanted to take a tour around the old Fenmarc/Produce World site to see if there were any cats on site. She has set up traps around the back of Station Road and so far has caught 11 cats/kittens. These have since been neutered and are available for adoption. Anyway, after we had a long walk all around the site as well as inside we again found no evidence of cats living on the site. She suggested that if you do see stray cats in and around Station Road or if you would like any more information or would like to support Cats in Crisis in any way they do have a Charity Shop at 39 Redwood Drive, off Brant Road, Lincoln, LN5 9BN. Lucy can be contacted on 07944982079 or via the website www.catsincrisis.org.uk Next meetings The next meeting for your diary is Monday 8

th of May and starts at

7:30pm. The Annual Parish Meeting (where all groups can come along and give an update of what is going on) takes place on the 22

nd of May and starts at 7pm.

All the meetings take place in the small room at the Village Hall. As always, you are all welcome to attend. Cllr Bob Crozier Swinderby PC

Goodnight Mister Tom by David Wood adapted from the novel by Michelle Magorian

Friday 2nd June 7.00pm & Saturday 3rd June 2.30pm & 7.00pm

One of the most uplifting stories ever written, Michelle Magorian’s heart-warming story Goodnight Mister Tom is brought gloriously to life in this stage adaptation by David Wood – the UK’s ‘National Children’s Dramatist’ [The Times]. Set during the dark and dangerous build-up to the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom follows young William Beech as he is evacuated from London to the idyllic English countryside, where he builds a remarkable and moving friendship with village recluse, Tom Oakley. All seems perfect until William is devastatingly summoned by his mother back to London. A moving tale of two broken souls, healed through a friendship which knows no barriers. Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre : High Flying Women – Pioneering Aviators will open to the public telling the stories of female aviators from around the world. The exhibition will enable visitors to discover these remarkable women and their love of flight, speed, adventure and service for their countries. Equally important, the exhibition examines their struggles and rebellion against the conventions of their respective times, in order to realise their dreams; and how they fearlessly took to the air when aviation was a far greater risk than it is today. It will also show that wealth or indeed a lack of it was not an inhibitor of their ambitions. The exhibition will also highlight the role women played in nursing wounded aircrew, against the conventions of the day. See how these extraordinary women took different paths to achieve their dream including entertainment, endurance racing, military and nursing service. They all were and still are, reminders that any dream is possible with determination and tenacity. This exhibition is open to the public from Saturday 1 April to Sunday 24 September 2017. Admission is free. Whilst sorting through some old paperwork at home mum found an edition of the linkup from 1995. Some of you will remember the A4 stapled version with the front colour page. It was so very interesting to read and look back at what was happening, there are some advertisers that are still advertising with us—which is awesome. It gave me an idea to issue a challenge.

What is the oldest copy of the linkup you can find? Do you have one older than 1995?

If so could I borrow it for a short while. Email me or pop it through my letter box named with an address so I can return it to you. A small prize for the oldest edition found.
