I’m certainly glad that wind has stopped! And everywhere seems to be springing into life. Going passed the hedgerows, they are changing so fast and the temperature seems to be on the rise which makes for some good gardening weather. My lawn even had it’s first cut of the year this week, however I know for some people on Station Road that might have happened several months ago. Better late than never? With Easter approaching, it is time to announce that the phone box (on High Street) will be decorated with Easter themed fun from April 1st (that’s no joke!). Simon would really love it if lots of people got involved. There are plans afoot of knitted ducks and crochet chicks. It really is a true village effort so please do contribute. I’ve also printed some colouring pages for fun and a ‘more adult’ Henna Egg (drawn by my sister Helen.) There is, in the organising stages, a Tea Together session on Wednesday afternoons in the Church 2-4pm. For toddlers and children and their carers. These are scheduled to begin after the Easter holidays but please keep your eyes out for more information closer to the time.

Please support your Link Up Magazine. The magazine is brought to you free by a team of local volunteers. Could you contribute content? Could you collect loose change or make a donation to cover printing costs? Do you use our advertisers? Don’t forget to contact us to advertise your events. (Copy date 20th of the month.)

[Business advert rates: Annual: Full page: £120 Half page £60, Quarter page £35]

Jam Jar Appeal Could you take an empty jar and fill it with loose change? When it’s full hand it to me and the donation helps cover the cost of printing the magazine. We rely on your generosity and the support of our advertisers. Thank you.

The copy date for the next Link Up will be 20th April at 5pm. Please note that all articles in the Link Up are taken in good faith. We cannot and will not, take responsibility for any legal queries resulting thereof. The articles do not necessarily reflect our views. We reserve the right not to print some submitted articles.

Call for Content I would really love some more of your stories for the magazine, whether local history or your history. If you want to tell us about how the village

was in the past or something interesting about your own history or adventures we’d love to read it. Is there somewhere you’ve visited locally

that you think other people might like to go? Let us know!

CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup. Call David Gardiner 8

Voter ID Pilot in North Kesteven

Elections on 2 May 2019. For the first time, anyone wanting to vote at a polling station on this day will need to take some kind of identification (ID) with them. This is to prove that they are who they say they are. It is part of a national electoral integrity pilot looking into ways to ensure the security of the voting process and reduce the risk of voter fraud.

Locally, the requirement to bring ID only applies to North Kesteven and only affects people voting in person at polling stations.

You need to bring either: 1 Type of Photo ID OR 2 Types of Non-Photo ID. A full list of the acceptable types of ID has been posted to all registered voters and is available on the NKDC website. If you don’t have any of the accepted forms of ID you can apply to have a Local Elector Identification Document , free of charge, especially for this election. There is an application to complete and your application must be attested by a ‘Person of Good Standing’ in the community. This must be done before 1st May. Get in touch with the NKDC Elections team on 01529 308214 for further guidance. https://www.n-kesteven.gov.uk/residents/electoral-registration-and-elections/

Hello Everyone Over the last few months the churches in the villages have been reflecting on how best to express our Mission and Vision. While we want to be true to the foundations of all we do, our faith, we also wanted to express how we can contribute to the life of the villages in a wider sense. Below you will see what we have come up with, and this is to form part of the Bishop of Grimsby being with us for Holy Week and Easter. Please do come along to as many of the events as possible, which as they are finalised I will publish on the various village social media groups.

Swinderby Group of Churches Mission Statement. The basis of all we do is to encourage the mission of the Church, by putting Jesus’s teaching into practice by being faithful, joyful and confident in all that we do through nurturing and helping to transform the lives of individuals and by helping our local communities to flourish Vision Statement We will live our Mission Statement by encouraging:- Belonging • We belong to God. • We belong to each other. • We belong to our local community • We belong without having to feel

constrained by membership. • We belong for as we are, despite different

life experiences. Connecting • We are connected to God, through Jesus • We are connected to each other • We are connected to our local community

and the wider world • We are connected to our self, knowing that we are precious to God Flourishing • We strive to help our community and individuals to flourish and find life in its fullness • We work that life in its fullness is celebrated • We are sensitive to the needs of others and God’s world • We seek to be generous in all that we are. • We seek to gain confidence in sharing our faith with others through word and action As ever, Andrew

Notes From A Small Parish - March 2019

Well, here’s our casual update on Swinderby Parish Council’s meeting for March. But first some news – The Produce World site on Moor Lane has been sold to Peter Sowerby Homes. I have had a brief introductory phone conversation with Peter who is very pleased to have made the purchase and keen to build something the village can be proud of. However, as yet, he remains tight lipped as to what that something is! I think he is still pulling ideas together. I’m thinking that I might include a small and hopefully interesting ‘did you know’ fact (can facts be small?) about our meetings each month. Something that says not just what we do but also the how and why. So, did you know that meeting agendas and minutes are bound by statute and regulation? This means we can’t just go and have a good old natter about what takes our fancy! So, for example, decisions on an item can’t be made unless it appears on the agenda and the agenda must include certain items - like finance, planning, approval of previous minutes to name but some. The first item is always (fanfare) the public forum. The public forum is always interesting and this months was no exception. An individual (we can’t name names) told us that he has been approached by the new owner and developer of the Produce World site (the carrot factory!) asking to buy his land adjacent to the site with a view to extending the development. His understanding is that he is not the only person to have been asked. He also pointed out that his land is definitely not for sale. The Parish Council have not been approached for our views on any ideas or possible changes to the existing planning permission but we are thankful to the member of public for letting us know. Onto other items; Geoff Lloyd and Simon Longson have been busy planting young trees to thicken up the hedgerow and verge along the Station Road playing field. About 80 trees have been planted in all. These were donated to the Parish Council by Morton Road Nursery last year. The council held a litter pick on Sunday 17

th March. A good group of parishioners

and councillors collected a small mountain of rubbish from the roadsides and hedgerows around the village. The weather was bright if breezy which put us in good frame for the sausage rolls, cake and coffee which followed. Again, thanks to all participants who helped to keep our village tidy. Watch out for the next pick in autumn, come and join in to make a real difference. We have received a notification from NKDC giving us conditional permission to mount the history plaque on the triangle of grass opposite Pacey Close. The conditions related to the upkeep and safe placing of the plaque, were reasonable and have been accepted. The plaque will be planted in the not too distant future so keep an eye out for it.

As I highlighted in my article last month, the county council had sent us and All Saints School a suggested plan for parking restrictions in the area of the school and church. These were for consultation. I had a chat with Zoe, the Head Teacher, for their views and we agreed that it was complex and probably unworkable in it’s current form. We have agreed to negotiate a delay to the decision for three months to give time for an alternative plan to be thought out and presented. Does this sound reminiscent of the ‘B’ word – Brexit? The Thomas Whites Charity, as local land owners, have rekindled their idea to dig three irrigation reservoirs on land adjacent to the ‘carrot factory’ off Moor Lane. This will obviously mean a quantity of aggregates being recovered from the excavations. No planning applications have been made yet but we have invited a representative from the charity to our next parish council meeting to present their ideas. Come along and hear what they have to say. Don’t forget the elections on 2

nd May. If you would like to become a parish

councillor then details of how to stand in the election are posted on the Village Hall and the High Street notice boards as well as the parish council web site. Don’t forget that when the time comes to vote you will need to bring ID along with you, e.g. passport, photo driving licence. And now for a mystery! Some shallow holes have been dug, apparently at random, on the High Street playing field. They were clearly dug with a spade or similar and not by an animal. Though not very deep the holes could easily cause injury to anyone walking or playing on the field. Obviously, people of all ages and abilities use our playing field so we have been along to fill the holes back in, or at least the ones we could find. I’m sure there must be a reason for them but as the land owners we weren’t consulted so it remains a mystery. Don’t forget that we are holding our Annual Parish Meeting on Monday 15 April at 7pm in the Village Hall. This is where you can come along, meet the councillors and talk informally about parish issues, events, ideas etc. and hear what we have been doing and would like to do in the coming year. Local groups are invited to come and say a little bit and promote themselves. There is a loose agenda but the emphasis in on the informal. And finally, you may already know that the entire length of the High Street in Collingham will be closed from 07:30 on Saturday 23 March to 17:30 on Sunday 31 March. I understand that access to the Co-Op, the medical centre, chemist and dentist will be from Station Road.

Reg Ketteringham, Chair. Swinderby Parish Council.

FOUND RING

I have been contacted by a villager who has found a ring. As in a wedding ring/

engagement ring type of ring. I’d say it is a womans ring—but don’t like to judge. If

you have lost one please contact me (details on page 1) with a brief description of the one you have lost so hopefully we

can reunite you.

CHOPS Report

The delivery which came into the village on the 22 March was again from NWF Fuels – 3 deliveries in a row! The price this time was 43.15p per litre + 5% VAT. Oil prices for Swinderby have been pretty stable over the last 16 months averaging around 45p per litre with only one small ‘blip’ in that time. I hope that this stability continues. The next delivery will be on the Friday the 4 May 2019. For any villagers who don’t use CHOPS, there can be some good savings to be made. For example in late January/early February someone on a regular top-up from one of the big suppliers found out that he was paying just over 15p per litre more for that privilege! This is why I publish the price paid for the most recent delivery, so that villagers are aware of such opportunities. With the better weather at last with us, our oil

usage should be starting to drop as spring

approaches.

Thanks, David

I am delighted to be able to write to you this month as the new permanent Head Teacher of Swinderby All Saints Church of England Primary School, a post which I officially began on March 1

st.

I feel honoured and proud to have been given the opportunity to lead this amazing school onwards and to move it forwards and make it even better. As many of you know, I have been teaching at the school for a very long time; having joined as a young, inexperienced teacher in 1992. I began my teaching career here teaching the Reception Class, a daunting prospect for me but one that despite the tears (my own!!) I ultimately found to be very rewarding. Some of you may recall on my first visit me being ‘paraded’ into the hall to be greeted by a large group of parents of new Reception children, a truly daunting event for me. However, the warmth they subsequently showed me set me off on the right track! During the ensuing years, I have taught all year groups and have been most fortunate to develop relationships with many families, some of which now bring their own children to the school. I truly believe that these relationships are fundamental to the success and longevity of a church school in a village such as Swinderby. I intend to continue to build on these as we go forward. Indeed, education is built on the partnerships between home and school. Through church activities, village bowls and events such as The Good Companions annual Christmas lunch I have come to know many of the villagers and always enjoy a good catch up whenever we meet. The school’s Governing Body is very proactive and keen for the school to become the best it can be. Like me, they want the best for every child in our school and will challenge me on this if necessary. Reverend Vaughan is a regular visitor to our school, working in our classrooms alongside the children and holding Collective Worship in church. Our Friends of Swinderby School are also very active and organise half termly events for the children which are very popular. They support the school in many ways and have recently purchased lots of exciting items for the classrooms. I find this support invaluable. However, I would not be where I am today without the support of my former Chair of Governors Mrs Gillian Murdoch who sadly passed on in December 2018. She had been involved with the school for nine years, educating both her daughters at the school. Through her role she showed her passion for the village school and she was determined that all the children that passed through the doors should have opportunities and go on to succeed in whatever they choose to do. I feel honoured that her belief in me has given me the confidence to continue her vision. Going forward, I want the school to become more outward looking and we are already part of strong partnerships with both our neighbouring schools and those further afield. We have joined the Kyra Educational Partnership through which our teachers can access high quality training. We are heavily involved in Musical events and are taking part in

County Sport’s events. Our new football and netball kits have been kindly sponsored by the Lost Village. We shall be out and about soon planting trees around the play area alongside members of the Parish Council. We are also becoming part of the East Midlands Maths hub and are working with the new English hub at Witham St Hugh’s Academy. This will all benefit our children enormously. I would love the opportunity to show you what goes on at Swinderby All Saints and we

have Open Mornings on Tuesday 2nd

April, and Wednesday 24th

April from 9.15 to

11.15am. If those times are not convenient please call us to make an appointment and I

would be happy to welcome you. Our website, http://www.swinderbyallsaints.co.uk/, and

Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/SwinderbyAllSaintsPrimarySchool/, are also

good places to see what we are up to! We have also been shortlisted to be a Community

Champion for the Coop enabling us to purchase vital new equipment for our Early Years

children. Please vote for us if you can! (www.lincolnshire.coop/ccvote)

On Friday April 5th

at 1.30pm we will be having an Easter service in church when I will be commissioned as Head of the school. I would be delighted if you wanted to join us. There will be refreshments in the school hall afterwards. I look forward to working with you over the coming years. With my very best wishes, Zoë Longstaff

What we’ve been getting up to in School

As a school, we work hard in lessons and celebrate our academic achievements (and rightly so), but we know children are much more than numbers on a page. We are a small school, but do fit in a lot of extra-curricular activities. Here’s a taster of some of the things we have been up to recently. Swinderby performed successfully at the recent Lincoln Music Festival. Our children took first prize in the ‘Small primary schools choirs’ class’ and the vocal quartet. We had a second place in the ‘Boys and girls up to year 6 musicals and light opera class’ with a characterful performance of the Artful Dodgers Song “Consider Yourself “. We had a first place in the ‘Boys up to year 6 vocal solo class’, also singing a song from the musical Oliver, “Who will Buy” - He has been invited to represent our school and perform the piece again at the festival concert. Some Year 5 children attending a Tag Rugby tournament held at Bishop Grosseteste University. There were some anxious looking faces at the start of the day, but smiles all round and muddy knees by the end. As a church school, we continue to enjoy good relations with our Swinderby All Saints Church. We often welcome Reverend Vaughan into our lessons, and enjoy going to church for Collective Worship. Friends of Swinderby School have hosted a disco and a film night which were very well attended; they continue to offer valuable support to the school. Last, but not least. We would like to say thank you to Lost Village, who have kindly

provided new netball and football strips for our teams. The children are looking forward to

showing them off!

COOP Health Walks John and I have recently started joining some of the COOP Health Walks (well, I walk, and he rides in his pushchair.) These are regular walks around local areas which aim to get people out and about and more healthy, but they offer so much more. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and learn more about the local area. They are free to join and run by lovely specially trained volunteers. I joined after Brian, one of the volunteers, visited my WI at a wellbeing event I organised. I really like walking but I guess didn’t walk as much as I wanted because I didn’t feel super comfortable walking long distances just me and John. Its really nice to go for a walk with other people. Last week we joined in the BBC Radio Lincolnshire Walk A Million Celebration Walk at Whisby Nature Park with Melvyn Prior which was such a fun day, very well supported and such lovely sunny weather. The best bit is all walks start and end at the same location, they last between 30 and 90 minutes, most also have a café visit at the end. There are usually varying distances for different abilities and you can just turn up on the day (no need to let anyone know.) Today we did a lap around Whisby Nature Park then up the hill into Thorpe on the Hill and back down into the park. I’ve lived in Swinderby almost all my life and have never walked that route before. The new brochure for the walks comes out very soon so I’ll be sure to grab a couple and pop them in the phone box/at the church in case anyone else is interested in joining any. You can also visit their website, https://www.lincolnshire.coop/community/health-walks The Luminarium

If you haven’t seen it before, the luminarium is difficult to explain. Some people describe it as

like walking through a stain glass window, others like being in a live painting or even being in a

space ship.

Being slightly more pragmatic, I’d describe it as like walking inside a bouncy castle - but its not

bouncy. It’s a massive inflatable structure, which due to the fabric used creates amazing lighting

and colour effects. Connecting pathways, caverns and pods wind around the structure—a walk-

in sculpture by designer Alan Parkinson which

has toured and astounded audiences around the

globe. It is totally enchanting and visitors are

invited to wander, lie-down and sit down and just

enjoy the ambience and the space. It is returning

this April (10th-14th) to the LPAC.

You can book tickets through the LPAC or their

website and some tickets will be available on the

day on a first-come-first-served basis. (The

queues do get long and are outside/not

undercover.)

Transport Festival - Easter Sunday 21 April 2019 10.00 am to 5.00 pm

If you’ve not been to this event before, or even if you have, it’s a brilliant day out (gets better every year,) experiencing some wonderful vintage transport. Situated at the Road Transport Museum (Whisby Road, North Hykeham.) There are visiting classic/historic vehicles, and you can access the workshop and restoration projects. There are refreshment stalls, enthusiasts stalls and as many bus rides (and car rides) as you can squeeze into your day. It costs £8 per adult and accompanied under 18s go free. (Remember to take cash as they are unable to accept card payments!) There are short rides, city centre rides, rural tours and excursions and all included in the admission price. If you are driving there please park at Siemens Teal Park—Park and Ride (you get to ride a vintage bus to the museum, there is only limited parking at the museum for blue badge holders). There’s lots more information available on their website: http://www.lvvs.org.uk/ Please note that dogs (other than registered assistance dogs) are no longer allowed on the Museum premises or vehicles 'in service.' Perhaps see you there? Sarah.
