from tears to joy!
Reach Out wishes its readers a very Happy New Year and extends greetings on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti
Dear Readers,You may wonder as to why there is a delay in publishing Reach Out! At the outset, I take the responsibility for
the delay, as luck would have it, it was a mixture of business travels, visit of overseas business associates and to top it all I was a little under the weather. However I will make it up by taking out an additional issue of Reach Out, at the end of the year, giving an overview of the year...I hope you will enjoy reading this issue with a cup of hot tea in this wintry time...Yours-In-Rotary
PP Brij Mohan Lakhotia
Makar Sankranti refers both to a specific solar day in the Hindu calendar and a Hindu festival in reference to deity Surya (sun) that is observed in January every year. It marks the first day of sun’s transit into the Makara
(Capricorn), which is the house owned by deity Shani who is the son of Sun. It means Sun visits his son. It also makes the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days.Makar Sankranti is one of the few ancient Hindu festivals that has been observed according to solar cycles, while most festivals are set by the lunar cycle of the lunisolar Hindu calendar. Being a festival that celebrates the solar cycle, it almost always falls on the same Gregorian date every year (January 14). The festivities associated with Makar Sankranti are known to Hindus by various names such as Lohri in north India and also by Sikhs, Sukarat in central India, Bhogali Bihu by Assamese, and Pongal by Tamil and other south Indian.Makar Sankranti is observed with social festivities such as colorful decorations,

Makar Sankranti...rural children going house to house, singing and asking for treats (or pocket money), melas (fairs), dances, kite flying, bonfires and feasts. The Magha Mela, according to Diana L. Eck – a professor at Harvard University specializing in Indology, is mentioned in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, thus placing this festival to be around 2,000 years old. Many go to sacred rivers or lakes and bathe with thanksgiving to the sun. Every twelve years, the Hindus observe Makar Sankranti with one of the world’s largest mass pilgrimage, with an estimated 40 to 100 million people attending the event. At this event, they say a prayer to the sun and bathe at the Prayaga confluence of the River Ganga and River Mela, a tradition attributed to Adi Shankara. In a nutshell, it is the festival of Harvest, welcome longer days, sun worship, celebrations by kite flying, bonfires, fairs, Surya puja in river, feast, arts, dance, socialization.

16 December 2017Early in the morning President Girish Ganeriwala, IPP Sanjay Ganeriwala and PP Brij Mohan Lakhotia started by road to Purulia, with happy memories of the previous visit to RC Purulia for the joint RYLA held in the previous Rotary Year. The memory shall ever remain etched in the minds of those who went on to attend that wonderful project…
17 December 2017The day started with a gift to the city by RC Purulia in the form of a Clock Tower at the town taxi stand. The function was well attended by Rotary Dignitaries – DG Brojo Gopal Kundu, DGE Mukul Sinha, DGN Ajay Agarwal, PRID Shekhar Mehta, members of the district secretariat, members of neighboring clubs, Municipal officials of Purulia. The Clock Tower stands tall with Rotary emblem, reminding the citizens of the good work that Rotary does.
The AfternoonAfter the inauguration a plenary session was held, followed by lunch and distribution of their club souvenir.
The eveningIt is a matter of great pride that one of the

neighboring clubs of District 3291, RC Purulia celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary by taking up yet another noble cause of providing superlative medical care to the people of Purulia and neighboring areas. The area being somewhat remote and far away from metropolitan city medical care that is not easily available and to fill the scarce facility RC Purulia has built a full-fledged hospital in the name
of RC Purulia Service Centre which is a super specialty hospital with all modern facilities, amenities with a team of dedicated doctors and trained staff. It is a matter of great satisfaction for us Central Calcuttans that we also extended our hand of friendship to RC Purilia and handed over a cheque to the of Rs 1,50,000 towards the medical facility…We are thankful to each member of that great club and if I start to write down each name the list will be rather long but I must mention the name of IPP Ganesh Agarwal and President Manoj Singhania for inviting us and looking after us so very well in spite of their rather hectic schedule.
The NightAfter the satisfying time that we spent
at the inauguration of Hospital, we were asked to join for an entertaining programme by hasya kavi Sampat Saral. The program was hilarious and was followed by Ghazal evening and dinner
The ThoughtThis brings us to do serious introspection as to why is our club resting on past laurels! Think – What are we doing!!

Welcoming iFCR Australia to the “City of Joy”
Dear Members,
Rotary International is dedicated to bringing people closer. It has done so across 209 coun-tries with approximately 1.2 million members.
The International Fellowship of Cricket Loving Rotarians (IFCR) has gone one step further. It is bringing people together through the institu-tion of cricket. These IFCR Rotarians play the game not only for competitive enjoyment but also for social reasons, resulting in a sense of cross-border or pan-country fellowship.
This is an important point: India is full of pas-sionate cricket followers across all ages; how-ever, cricket playing is largely restricted to In-dians below the age of 35. In such a scenario, IFCR is playing a unique missionary role: it is extending the cricket playing tradition to those above 35; the average age of an IFCR team is 40 and largely comprising businessmen and self-employed processionals. The IFCR objec-tive is to raise the average age of the cricket playing fraternity in India and evolve what is seen only as a competitive sport into a social phenomenon that brings communities together.
Time has come for IFCR members to take this commitment to a new level. Kolkata IFCR will live up to the city’s rightful reputation of be-ing passionate cricket lovers on the one hand and warm hosts on the other while organiz-ing a unique international cricket tournament against a visiting team from IFCR, Australia from 19th to 21st February, 2018.
This is a tournament with a difference: the sur-plus generated from the event will be deployed to assist sport persons with primary focus to the underprivileged & specially abled.
We need to partner with a respected corporate organization that shares this ideal and philos-ophy. Please supports us.
Sincerely,
Chittranjan Choudhury Kanishka Bahety Madhav Mohta CA Girish Ganeriwala
