Principal’s Message If you take a look at the school web site you will see a promotional video about our school. This was our entry into the “Great Schools’ Showoff” competition submitted by a group of our students under the guidance of Ms Lumkin. We have been lucky enough to be chosen as the South Western Sydney Regional winner. Our winning entry will now go into the next State round. We will receive our prize as part of Education Week Celebrations at Homebush.

During Education Week we have been show-casing our school through a number of events such as our Primary School Visit Day, Morris Gleitzman’s visit as a writer in residence, our Visual Arts Exhibition and our student dancers and choir have also performed as part of the celebrations.

Students in Year 10 and Year 11 have had their laptops upgraded and they now contain the latest software and applications. Some students unfortunately still have not submitted their laptops to Mrs Muriankary and will find that their laptops will not have the upgraded software and will not be covered for warranty repairs. It is important for all students who have been issued with DER laptops that the regulations and conditions of use are adhered to.

Year 10 students are at present working on subject selections. Students need to ensure that that they do their research into what is the best subjects that will suit each student’s future. My advice is to choose subjects that you are interested in, that you will enjoy studying which will help lead to your success. Avoid choosing subjects because your friends are doing it. Talk to your teachers and other students who maybe studying those courses and do a little background reading so you make an informed choice.

Our Year 12 students are now in the final term of their schooling. They must maximize time and their learning to ensure that they make the best from the feedback given by teachers after the trial HSC examinations.

Thank you to those students who have contributed to this edition of “GLIDES”. Enjoy your reading! David Hargrave Principal

Deputy Principal’s Report It has been a busy start to Term 3. Year 10 have been attending a Taster market and presentations by the Board of Studies Liaison Officer and VET/TVET personnel in preparation for their subject selection for the senior years. This is the first step in an important process. Girls need to carefully consider the subjects on offer and what best meets their needs and future career choice. Year 8 will also have the opportunity to choose their subjects for Year 9 in the near future. I have been hosting a Deputy Principal from the Niagara Falls District in Ontario Canada for 10 days. Mr Bill Klasson has been looking at our Education system and especially the programs that we have in place to enhance the learning opportunities for our girls. Mr Klasson asked me to thank the staff and students for their warm welcome and helpfulness during his stay at the school. He was very impressed with the friendliness and politeness of the girls and the quality of their classroom work.

In celebration of NAIDOC week that occurred in the school holidays, a special Aboriginal Family Partnership meeting was held on Tuesday 26 July 2011. Local Aboriginal Elder Aunty Mae Robinson was a special guest and presented certificates to the girls who showcased their work. The school choir sang the National Anthem in the

Dharawal language and English and also performed another song as well. Some of our Aboriginal girls spoke about their art works, scholarship program, Artist in Residence and Writer in Residence programs. Special thanks to Mrs Normand, Mrs Coleman and Ms Knott for their work in preparing the girls for this special meeting. Mrs C Screech Deputy Principal

Grand Opening of Liverpool Hospital

Liverpool Girl’s High School choir was invited to perform at the grand opening of Liverpool Hospital wing. The new upgrade has been a long time coming for the community of Liverpool and Liverpool Girl’s was delighted to be part of this event. The choir students performed the Australian National Anthem both in English and in Dharawal language after being taught the native language from the Aboriginal Education Unit recently. The performance was watched by many prestigious guests, hospital staff and representatives and members of the local community. Thank you to all students involved! By Mrs Normand Music Teacher

Curious Questions Answered

1. WHY do we all yawn?

Some theories explain yawning as a reflex in response to low oxygen or high carbon dioxide levels. Other theories suggest it stretches out the lungs and nearby tissues, preventing tiny airways in the lungs from collapsing and developing chest infections.

2. Why do we never forget how to ride a bike, yet can’t remember names of

old school friends or phone numbers?

When you first learnt to ride, you were learning a motor skill. The muscle memory of riding a bike is stored widely across the brain, unlike names and phone numbers.

3. Should you really feed a cold and why is chicken soup recommended?

Eating not only helps your body combat a cold, but can also help you feel better. Dutch researchers found that eating stimulates the same immune response that destroys cold-causing viruses. But you must eat a healthy diet. Chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties, and studies haves shown that it can reduce the movement of the white blood cells that cause cold symptoms.

4. Does cracking your knuckles give you arthritis?

Another popular myth, his one probably started to stop people from doing it because it’s annoying. It may make your joints sore but there’s no way evidence that occasionally cracking you knuckles causes arthritis. But if you do it all the time, you could injure cartilage and cause joints to swell. Continue doing it and eventually it might lead to degenerative joint diseases, such as arthritis.

5. Is it true sleep before midnight is better than after?

Upon falling asleep at any time, most go through a 90-minute cycle of non REM (rapid eye movement) sleep follow by REM sleep , and the ratio of non-REM to REM changes across the night, the earlier in the night , the greater the propensity for non- REM sleep. This means an early-to-bed person will

have a sleep pattern biased towards more non-REM sleep, and dream less. IS THIS BETTER? WHO CAN SAY?

6. Do diet cola drinks damage your bones?

Research has confirmed that regularly drinking cola- including diet varieties- is bad or women’s bones and may increase the risk of osteoporosis. As part of the normal aging process, bones lose calcium more quickly than it can be replaced, leading to a reduction in bone density. As a result, bones gradually lose their strength and become more brittle. The National Osteoporosis Society recommends cutting on fizzy drinks to keep bones strong.

7. Does wearing antiperspirant deodorant contribute to breast

cancer?

No truth to this yet has been revealed by extensive research. Your armpits are not a route for ‘toxin’ excretion. It also false that aluminium salts in deodorants, are absorbed into the body and block lymph gland. No chemicals in deodorants have been found to be harmful.

Interesting facts You burn more calories sleeping, than you do watching television. The first product to have a bar code was Wrigley's gum. American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by eliminating one (1) olive (from

each salad served in first-class). Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise. (Since Venus is normally

associated with women, what does this tell you? That women are going the 'right' direction...?)

The first owner of the Marlboro Company (cigarette) died of lung cancer. So did the first 'Marlboro Man'.

Dentists have recommended that a toothbrush be kept at least six (6) feet away from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting from the flush.

A duck's quack doesn't echo and no one knows why.

Indigenous Excursion Day

No. 1 Fan On Wednesday the 15th June a group of Indigenous students went to the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre to see an exhibition called No.1 Fan that celebrates the passion and fanaticism of Rugby League supporters and fans. The girls participated in the creation of a banner and flag that will be sent to the Indigenous All Stars team in Queensland as an expression of their support and admiration. They also got to meet and have Q&A time with Brad Tighe and Timana Tahu, two Indigenous Panthers players. After which they had a BBQ lunch and walked around the exhibition. A great fun-filled day was had by all. By Skye Cheatham Year 10 and Ms Sparkes Creative Arts Teacher

Best Friend Poem

I may not show,

And you may not know.

I’m always here,

With an open ear.

Even if you leave,

I still believe.

That someday I will see you again,

However, I don’t know when.

And if the time arrive,

And we’re still alive,

We shall see each other,

So you need not bother.

Because we’ve been friends so fast,

And I’m hoping it would last.

Our bond.

Serve Mine Love

Little bit of love, Little bit of sugar, With your smile,

For my morning breakfast,

Do not add bitter, Or sour,

Not even salty or spicy, Into my delicious lunch,

Especially I dislike, Your coldness love, Your tasteless meal, our heartless look,

Appear where I am eating,

The romantic dining room, With the golden plate,

The shiny glass of wine, Under the beautiful light of love,

Don’t make me wait,

Or you will die, So serve me well,

My beloved servant.

Funny Man

There once was a funny looking man, who was unique in his own way. He couldn’t care less about what anyone thought or said and he definitely didn’t care about love. Until he meet a beautiful girl who stole his heart from the very first sight. There was something about her that light up the funny looking man’s heart. His thoughts racing with the words:

You are my hope

And that’s how I cope When everything pulls me down I know, you’ll always be around

You taught me to care And you taught me how to share You taught me how to be honest

So don’t be modest You taught me how to love

That was my wish from above You made me live To care and to give You are the reason

That I survive every season I know I might look funny,

A man without money But I am sure that you love me

Just the way I am So come with me

And forever we will be Just like birds, we are free

The Anonymous

Button a·non·y·mous

[uh-non-uh-muh-s] Meaning to remain unknown. The anonymous button is the option to state your name or remain name-less on social websites such as formspring or tumblr. It could be a wonderful thing, asking someone you don't know well where they get their shoes and such without having the feeling of embarrassment, however some people abuse this option by writing insults and negative comments. Negative comments such as "You're ugly, Go die, No one likes you" are seen on my home page or dashboard at times.

We all have that annoying person we seem to dislike or hate with a passion, pop onto their ask box type up how you feel about this person, click the anonymous button, and you're done! No harm done right? No.

No one realises the damage they do to the person’s self-esteem, how much it could affect one's self. They might not realise it, but the person they send the hate to could be depressed already, or beginning to. Reading comments such as "you're ugly, pathetic, go die" can make the depression far more worse, it can lead to the person cutting themselves in their bathroom, planning their

death, develop an eating disorder (Anorexia, Bulimia) or attempt to kill themselves. We see this everywhere, bold headlines on the newspaper "Another suicide due to cyber bullying" on the news you see all the families upset, crying over the fact people can be heartless enough to drive their daughter, son, brother, sister or close friend or family to their death. Some people might not realise it but the hate you send, the "message" you type just to relieve your frustration, can lead to circumstances like that. People who enjoy sending hate can be responsible for the death of another. Does it benefit you? Does it make you feel better about yourself? You can always change your appearance with plastic surgery, make-up and more to look pretty, but deep down you will have an ugly heart. Another thing is the anonymous button is not exactly "anonymous." In each computer, electronic device there is a unique I.P Address, anyone can track down the I.P address and have access to your address, phone number, personal details, and so then you are clearly not so anonymous anymore. If the victim decides to track you down… well I guess you’re screwed. Sending anonymous hate can also put you in juvenile detention or jail; this will stay on your record, as a criminal. Having a criminal record can ruin your chances of getting a job, travelling to another country, why risk all that just for one person? 3000 people on average, commit suicide, each time someone dies another 20 people around the world attempt to end their lives. If you think you know someone who’s being bullied, doing self-harm, depressed or having suicidal thoughts please let someone know, you might just save their life.

Athletics Carnival Monday 20 June 2011

After two “false starts” the annual Athletics carnival was held on the school fields on Monday 20th June. The original two dates for the carnival were changed due to wet weather, so luckily the day went ahead, only two days before the Zone athletics carnival. The carnival was held to complement the students’ athletics work in PE class, with events in track events, field events and novelty activities. With a variety of short distance races, long distance running, throwing events, jumping activities and relays, there were many events to keep the students busy and active during the day. Serious competitors were contributing points towards the Hagum Cup – to be won by the sporting house group that gains the highest point tally combined in the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. A team of 60 girls were taken to the Zone Carnival held at The Crest on Wednesday 22nd June – from this carnival 18 girls have qualified for the SSW Region Carnival. Excellent results were gained in all the throwing events (javelin, discus, shot put) and the relay events. Congratulations to Siaa Toa and Bozana Pupovac who gained first and second place (respectively) in the 15 years age group at this carnival. Final results for the school carnival were: 12 Years: Batoul Majzoub (1st) Lillian Feagiai & Alicia Lo (Equal 2nd) 13 Years: Crystal Marsland (1st) Natalie Nixon (2nd) Anavihea Ngunguata (3rd)

Sydney South West Health “Young Mothers” Forum

Year 10 students were recently involved with a Sydney South West Health project where “young” mothers visited the school to let the girls know about their life as a parent. Year 10 students were invited to take part in the young mothers’ forum over three consecutive Thursday mornings in June. The mothers were aged between 18 and 22 years of age, and each brought their baby / young child with them to demonstrate some of the responsibilities involved with becoming a parent whilst still a teenager. The young women spoke of some of the difficulties they have encountered with being a mother at a “young” age – such as being a single parent, lack of family support, housing difficulties, lack of finances, no social life and many sleepless nights! It was apparent that all loved their children very much, but they would like to encourage school students to have lots of fun with friends, continue their studies and search for a career before embarking on “motherhood”. The project presented by SSW Health was part of the PDHPE curriculum to give students first hand experience and understanding of the syllabus requirements of exploring “attitudes, behaviours and consequences related to heath issues affecting young people.” Mrs Hayes – PDHPE Faculty

Hairspray On Wednesday 15th June 2011, Year 10 Dance, Music and Drama students attended the performance of Hairspray at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney. Liverpool Girl’s High School performing arts teachers have been challenging their students in year 10 to develop in confidence and performance practice for their craft. These students were given the unique opportunity to see the show Hairspray and for many it was the first time they had seen a live performance. Students were overwhelmed at how talented the performers were, how confident they were of their own ability and their skill at learning so many lines and movements. Students reported that they felt like they wanted to go up and dance with the performers as they were so good! The special effects used in the performance included digital backdrops, brilliant colours, smoke machines and these definitely made audience members feel as if they were from the 60’s. The dance routines, singing and acting combined to create an entertaining show that made everyone leave the theatre feeling upbeat and happy. Thank you Mrs Querin for organising the event and giving students at Liverpool Girls another wonderful experience! By Mrs Normand On behalf of the Performing Arts Faculty

Artist in Residence Workshop

On Monday the 27th of June til Friday the 1st of July Helen Proctor aka SYKE artist visited Liverpool Girls High School and ran a “Artist in Residence Workshop” for the first three days with year 8 and 9. On the first day Helen introduced herself to the girls and showcased her artworks and what she does for a living. She also let the girls experience and “get a feel” of spray paint and stencilling. On the second day the group used the process of print, laminate and cut to make their own stencils of the wildlife around Liverpool. They then used year 7’s drawings as a background and spray painted over the top. On the third day they used the same process of print, laminate and cut to make self portrait stencils. This time they took it a step further and used 2 layers of stencils. On the fourth and fifth day year 7 got a taste of the SYKE artist as they made stickers or “tags” to represent themselves. They then stuck it on a big piece of cardboard to represent the walls of the streets. Thank you to Helen Proctor for your time, all the groups/classes enjoyed your lessons and hopes to see you again sometime and wish you all the best. By Shania Tuilaepa Year 9

Important News on Student Travel Passes

Replacement Passes: From Term 3, 2011, Bus Companies and State Rail will not be issuing replacement passes (e.g. for change of address, change of bus company or change of train station), unless the old pass is handed in to the Reporting Office. If your old pass is damaged you must hand it in regardless of its condition. If for some reason the pass has been misplaced, a Statutory Declaration signed and certified by a Justice of the Peace must accompany the application form. Any enquiries regarding students not receiving their new passes, due to not handing in the old pass, will need to be directed to the Bus Company or State Rail by your parent/guardian. For lost or destroyed Bus passes, you must go directly to the Bus Company and pay the required fee, and you will be issued with a new pass. For lost or destroyed Train passes, you will need to go to Reporting Office (at school) and staff will assist you with the process (a fee is also required by State Rail).

Talent Identification Program

Year 11 student Evelyn Addison auditioned and was selected to participate in the regional Talent Identification Program where 150 students auditioned for this project and only 30 students were selected. Evelyn participated in 6 days of vocal workshops with professional musicians, singers and instrumentalists from the area. During the workshops Evelyn was given tuition on vocal technique, performance etiquette, stage presence, diction, song selection and the opportunity to work with live musicians. The workshops finished with 2 concerts where 40 students from Liverpool Girl’s High School attended to support Evelyn and see the talent in the region. Evelyn represented her school with pride in a lively performance of ‘Valerie’ accompanied by a track with live backing vocalists. Evelyn enjoys all kinds of music but her favourite would be jazz and RnB, She found her love of singing at church in the youth choir. Since then, Evelyn has selected music as one of her subjects for the HSC and has been involved in the school choir. She recently participated in the sate choral and instrumental concert at Sydney Town Hall. Evelyn enjoys interacting with her audience and telling her story in song. She hopes to continue her music aspirations after high school.

Dinosaur Designs and Object Gallery

The train ride was long, the prevailing winds were fierce and there was a forecast for rain but besides all the negatives the culturing sights we absorbed helped us understand the elements of design in a whole new light for instance: Wearable furniture, incorporating culture into design and simplicity vs. complexity. We arrived in the city eager to finally begin the excursion in full. Our first stop was the Strand Arcade this is where many high-end stores are located and the home to the Dinosaur designs store. We had two things to do, to observe all the designs in DD and to look at the layout of the store and the shop-front. The second thing on the to-do list was to have a look around the 2nd floor of the building (for the types of stores etc…). Many of the stores were way out of our price ranges so we could really do was look. Whilst at the DD store we were able to touch the real bone necklace (Courtesy of the workers at Dinosaur Designs). We had made our own prototype of the necklace so it was particularly fascinating to see the ‘real thing’. Once we were done looking at the many fancy stores we made our way out for lunch. We were given some time to grab a bite to eat, look at the stores in the city and really have a little free time. Just a little. Once our time was up we made our way to the Object Gallery. The Object Gallery held an exhibition that featured many designs made by young designers around Australia. They played around with the design elements to make weird and wonderful pieces. Pushing the boundaries of what we consider the ‘norm’. The kind guides who worked at Object Gallery guided us to each of the works. They talked to us about the designs, how the designers were inspired and why they were chosen for the exhibition. They really got us thinking. The day was full of interesting sights, which made me want to design, design and DESIGN. What we had learned in class was actually demonstrated. We weren’t bored to death because there was a balance of work and play! By Casey Byrne Year 10

Elemental Princess by Etelvina Pinto Year 11 Chapter 1 (I found a lost stray) There was a man walking towards me, he seemed translucent, the rain that poured over him somehow was able to pass through him. Unlike him my clothes were drenched and felt heavy on my shoulders, my black jeans felt as if they were going to be pulled down by the weight but luckily the belt held them up, my blue hooded jacket protected my hair but I pulled that off a while ago so now my hair is also drenched. Smart move right? Well it was sunny a few minutes ago.

The cloak he was wearing was the same colour as the clouds above me, the blue jeans looked like a saggy grey, his shoes were torn in several places and you could see his Nike branded socks and the holes in them, the shaggy hat he was wearing had a rim long enough to cover the front portion of his face but even so you could see his mouth in which he held a half burnt cigarette as he walked. He stepped closer to me and I didn’t know what to do. Was he real, was he fake, was it a dream, was it reality? I honestly didn’t know.

Then it happened, he stopped right in front of me, took the cigarette out from his mouth and exhaled. Like magic the smoke flowed around me passing through my hair and leaving me speechless. He tilted his hat up revealing what seemed to be his eyes that were like crushed emeralds being seen through a pond of glistening water that shimmered in place. He opened his mouth to speak. His voice is something that I’ll never be able to forget.

“My elemental princess I am here.”

His words crept around me and seemed to warm my body as if he himself was hugging me in a soft embrace and I didn’t know what to do. He bent down to me a smile tickling his lips. ‘It’s a dream… It’s got to be a dream’ I thought but… I was wrong. I coughed by accident remembering that I had asthma and he stood back. He took his left hand from out of his pocket, took the cigarette from his mouth and threw it onto the floor, stepping on it to extinguish the bud. “I’ve missed you my lady.” He said and he bowed and when I say bow I mean that old school 1950’s bow thing where the man took off his hat and bent down with his left leg extending backwards and with his right leg bent down.

Elemental Princess continued

I coughed again as I realised how cold my body was beginning to be which isn’t good by my standards and I grabbed my jacket to squeeze some of the water out but to no avail seeing as how once that water was out it was instantly replaced by more water and I coughed again. I looked at the guy as he stood up with a strange happy grin on his face as if he knew me. I coughed again and then asked.

“Who are you?” I coughed again and he stared at me confused. I took out my phone from my pocket to check the time. 4:25pm. My eyes widened. “My lady...? You do not remember me?” It’s that late already?!

“I- I’m sorry I’ve got to go!” I told him and sprinted down the street. Towards the shops but heard something following behind me. I turned my head to see if anyone was behind me but there was nothing. I bought what I had to and ran home. No one’s ever called me a princess before... and I’m sure that I’ve never met that guy before.

I slowed to a walk when I heard a bark next to me. I glanced down and saw a cardboard box. I walked closer to it and saw that inside was a little puppy running around chasing its’ tail and with a cute yelp it’s fell over its own paws. Only then did it realise that I was watching it. The puppy looked up at me and I was immediately captivated by its eyes; an electric blue spinning around with its playfulness and it walked towards me. It jumped on its hind legs, its front paws hanging on the edge of the box.

I could see my reflection in its’ eyes. I could see myself, my dark brown eyes that reminded me of a mud-pie in the spring with a small layer of dew clinging to the top, trying not to slide off and my black hair with its impossible fluffiness that I couldn’t control and the curly waves that were impossible to untangle, my fat nose with the scar that I got because of my clumsiness and, my lips with its dryness and cracks.

I reached out with my hand, the puppy’s fur was a strange colour for a common dog and it was actually bigger than most puppies which led me to wonder what breed it was. The puppy stared up at me with a confused expression. It probably wants me to adopt him. I patted the puppy and it licked my hand then rubbed its head against it. It barked at me and began to chase its tail again, then it stopped, panting with its tail waving frantically and its tongue hanging out.

Its fur looked as if a dull gunmetal grey had been scratched and scarred with dullness and yet outlined by a beautiful black shimmer that framed its face. Patting the dog’s fur was like running my fingers through a boa of feathers that tickled the senses and yet the warmth and softness of a blanket. It’s nose was wet so it seemed to be a healthy puppy and only then did I realise that the rain had stopped. I looked up, the clouds were still there but there just wasn’t any rain.

Elemental Princess continued

The puppy barked at me, begging for attention and I patted its head again. As I stood up and began to walk away, I felt this dragging guilt so I turned back and picked it the puppy up. Most of the time a puppy in a box is an abandoned one. I put the puppy in my jacket and it looked up at me as if confused. I put my finger to my lips and hushed when it barked at me. I patted it’s head and hunched my back, somehow I knew that it was going to rain again. I walked to the front gate of my house and sighed I really didn’t want to go home. I’ll bet anything that they’re fighting again. I walked up to the door and opened it, then heard a bark come from my jacket.

“What do you mean it’s my fault?! How is it my fault?!” My mother’s high voice screeched. Another bark came from my jacket and I looked down to the puppy when suddenly something crashed and the sound of broken ceramics clanked against the ground. I turned around to see it was my mum’s favourite vase.

I looked at where the vase came from but I couldn’t see anyone straight ahead of me. The voices of my parents I knew were coming from the living room. I walked there too see my mum holding the butcher knife, her apron covered in blood pointing it to my dad with anger flaring in her eyes and my dad was holding a monkey wrench in his left hand with oil blotches on his clothes. The strange smell of oil and blood mixed in the air and I felt the need to hurl within my stomach.

I turned around not brothering with them. Whenever I do they just turn their anger on me and hit me as much as they’d try to hit each other. I walked into my room and closed the door then turned the first lock, slid in the second and pushed the third. Yes, yes I have three locks. I took the puppy out of my jacket and put it on the floor, its tail ducked in between its legs and it looked at me. I smiled and bent down in front of him then patted its head, then sat down, it walked up to me and jumped into my lap.

“This is my home and I guess it’s yours now too huh? I’m sorry but right now I can’t feed you. Actually I don’t even know what to feed you.”

“Milk.”I turned around in shock my heart leaping against my rib cage and looked around. It was that guy from before the one in the rain but this time he was wearing different clothes, he was wearing the same clothes at me. Black jeans, black belt and a blue one zipper jacket with one pouch that your hands could enter at either end.

“How’d you get in here?!” I yelled freaked out my heart was still beating like crazy and I was still shock and freaked out. I locked all three locks?! The window isn’t open?! How’d he get in here?!

“I can only have milk right now, my teeth haven’t fully grown yet so I can only eat mashed up things but mostly milk.” He said and I stared at him for a long time, he was standing in front of me in an awkward, embarrassed way and I looked at the puppy. The puppy jumped on me its paw thumping on my chest slowly and I looked at the guy again then back at the puppy.

“How’d you...get in here...?”

“Don’t you mean... ‘who are you?’... I can answer that question just not the one before it.” He told me. His voice was much more husky than the first time he spoke and higher pitched with an edge of awkwardness and confusion in the mix.

I examined him a bit more, his hair was grey, the same dull black outlined gunmetal grey that the puppy had but he still had emerald eyes and at least he wasn’t smoking anymore and he seemed shorter and younger from the first time I saw him.

“Ok...Ok then... Who- Who are you?” I stuttered and the puppy suddenly barked and jumped off my lap. He ran around and tried to jump onto my bed but flailing and falling to the ground in the process. The guy walked past me, he picked up the puppy and dropped him onto the bed.

“My name is Xavier I am a wolf, not a common pup and you are the elemental princess of Shira.”

“I’m a what?” I asked but he totally ignored my question.

“Shira was a graceful and peaceful world but it’s now lost in the war between the greed of the nations of fire and it’s advisory of protection, water. Your mother and father are my superiors, they’re being held in the prison of Shira, a cell which strips away power, energy and the life-force which one has.

Before they were captured they sent you through a portal and sealed your powers away for a total of fifteen years. For those fifteen years I’ve been searching for you but because your powers were sealed I couldn’t find you but now I can and I did. I’ve been searching a long time for you my lady.” And I fainted...................................................................to be continued in the next edition.

Chocolate Mousse in Minutes

The middle of the week is a very good time to try out this tasty treat. It's the perfect pick-me-up, especially if you're into chocolate, and let's face it, who isn't? Ingredients (serves 6) • 300g good-quality dark

chocolate, roughly chopped • 3 eggs • 1/4 cup (55g) caster sugar • 1 tbs good-quality cocoa powder,

sifted • 300ml thickened cream, plus

extra whipped cream to serve • Grated chocolate, to serve

Method

1. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water (don't let the bowl touch the water). Stir until melted. Remove bowl from heat and set aside to cool slightly.

2. Place eggs and sugar in a large bowl and beat with electric beaters for 5 minutes, or until mixture is pale, thick and doubled in volume. Fold in cooled chocolate and cocoa powder until combined.

3. In a separate bowl, whip cream until thickened (be careful not to over-beat). Use a large metal spoon to carefully fold the cream into the chocolate mixture, trying to keep the mixture as light as possible. Spoon into 6 serving glasses and chill in fridge for at least 1 hour. Remove from fridge 15 minutes before serving, then top with extra whipped cream and grated chocolate to serve.

Youth Environmental Forum

Miss Craig and four students from the Student Leadership Council attended the Field of Mars and Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre for the first Youth Environmental Forum at Macquarie University on Tuesday 28th June. The keynote speech was by David Smith, the principal of Gibberagong EECs. We heard different stories of how other schools have become more sustainable for example in Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College in Sydney’s north they have banned the sale of plastic water bottles. The school has spent $7,500 installing water bubblers for students to use instead of plastic water bottles. To interact with the other schools we played World Café. This game involves a person calling out a phrase ‘find someone and ask them what their school’s plan is towards sustainability’. For every phrase we have to find and ask a different person. After World Café we attended four workshops; The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) is a youth organisation in Australia. The organisation aims ‘to build a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis, through uniting diverse youth organisations around this common challenge’. The AYCC has 56,000 members and counting. They train climate leaders and run high impact campaigns.

Ready to take action now? Find out more information at www.aycc.org.au/getinvolved. The second workshop was a talk about the carbon tax and emissions trading scheme and why environmental issues and solutions are not recognised in today’s society. We participated in a hands on activity around the campus where we planted native grasses and shrubs in an area that is being transformed into a diverse native understory. After walking around the understory we participated in a treasure hunt around Macquarie University where we had to answers to specific questions regarding sustainability. After the treasure hunt each school made a pledge on how they were going to be more sustainable. Liverpool Girls’ High School pledged to consume less power and the SLC hope to fulfil this pledge by turning off lights in the holidays and switching off unused electrical equipment. On Monday 25th July Liverpool Girls High School hosted Morris Gleitzman as a visiting author for Year 7 & some Year 8 students. Students from LGHS’s Community of Schools were also invited. Visiting students came from Warwick Farm PS, Liverpool PS and Marsden Road PS. At Liverpool Girls’ High School some Year 7 English classes have studied “Two Weeks with the Queen”. Year 7 students remember well their Primary School readings of “Toad Rage” and the “Deadly” series of humorous stories co-written with Paul Jennings.

Morris Gleitzman talked about his many books, including his poignant trilogy on the Holocaust : Once, Then, Now with Felix & Zelda. It was interesting to hear how long an author works on a book and how many times the story is corrected or re-written – helpful information for all students who like writing. His latest work "Too Small to Fail”, about the Global Financial Crisis, has Mr Gleitzman's usual humorous twist on a serious current topical theme.

Students commented: “I came in a hopeless writer and went away with a truckload of ideas” Michelle Tran 7R. Miranda Whitton 7L: “He taught us how to use our imagination.”
