DearmembersofHOPE,friendsandcolleagues,asIstartedtheeditorialworkforthisnewsletter,Ihadtofacethefactthatwewillsoonarriveattheendoftheyear.Thisalwaysgivesusthereasonandtimetoreviewtheeventsoftherecentperiodandstarttoplanforthegoalsofthenextone.Butitalsogivesustimetocalmdown,totaketimeforourselves,forourfriendsandfamily,so IwishyouandyourfamilyahappyChristmastimeandahealthyandenergeticNewYear.During the winter holiday enjoy reading the news from Ireland, Poland,Slovenia,SwedenandHungary.

GoodintentionsfortheNewsletterDameAgathaChristie(1890–1976)wasthebest-sellingcrimenovelistofalltime.IntheUnited-Kingdomtherewasalonglastingfinetraditiontogive friends “a Christie for Christmas". Now Dame Agatha Christie hasstopped writing, I got another idea to continue this tradition in a newway.Whydon’twepasstheNewsletterofHOPEfromNewYear2017ontoourcolleaguesandfriendstoraiseawarenessforHOPE?Andtherewithstart a circle around us of people who we might call ‘our friends of

HOPE’?Thatwouldbeagood intention forNewYear2017and theyearsahead.Asparkmaycauseabigfire.PerhapsourNewsletterofHOPEcouldbeasuccessfulsparkonceagain.

Who could these “friends of HOPE” be? ReportofparticipationintheENOC20thAnnualConferenceinVilnius,Lituania,20-21September2016byMichelKleuters,ambassadorofHOPE.

Themeofthisconference“Equalopportunitiesforallchildrenineducation”.FollowingourmeetinglastyearwiththeDutchOmbudsperson,Mr.MarcDullaartintheHague,HOPEwasinvitedbytotheannualconferenceoftheEuropeanNetworkofOmbudspersonsforChildren(ENOC).ENOC wants to establish links and share information and strategies with other independentchildren’s rights institutions, children’s ombudspersons, commissioners for children, or focalpointsonchildren's rights innationalhumanrights institutionsorgeneralombudsmanoffices.TheBoardofHOPEaskedme toattend this conference to introduce themtoHOPE, tell themaboutouractivitiesandtotrytomaketheconnectionbetweenthetwoEuropeanOrganizationsforChildren.AfterrespondingtotheorganizersoftheCongressthatwewereveryhonoredandhappywiththis invitation,Ithenreceivedtheprogramofthecongresswiththemessagethattherewouldbe only 10 minutes available for a workshop “Children in Hospitals” where I could give mypresentationonHOPE.Iaskedtheorganizersiftheywouldbesokindastoplaceacopyourflyer,theHOPECharterandalistwiththenamesande-mailaddressesofourBoardmembersandCommitteeMembers,inthe conference foldersof all participants. Iwas veryhappy that they couldaccommodate thisrequest.Now,IcouldfocusonmypresentationonHOPEasaEuropeanorganization.Itincludedashorthistoryofourorganisation,ouraims,ourworkshopsandourcongresses.BesidesthisIdroppedflyersofHOPE,thebooklets“Caringabout...takingcareof”(bothparts),somestress-ballsandsomeboxeswithpostcardsontheinformationtable.Bytheendoftheconferencemostofourmaterials had been taken away by participants. I in turn collected information that I thoughtmightbeusefulforHOPEandsentthistoourPresident.DuringtheconferenceInoticedthatitisveryimportantforGovernmentsandDepartmentsofallEuropeancountriestoreceivechartersandplans intheirmother-language.So IcouldmentionthetranslationsofourCharterastheyarepublishedonourwebsite.

Inmy conversations during the breaks, I noticed that the actual topics “Education for Roma-children”andeverythingaboutthe“Childrenofrefugeesandimmigrants”wasgivenalotoftimeand attention by all the Ombudspersons and other present Organizations. The topic of“EducationforChildrenandAdolescentswithmedicalConditions”hadnotthesameurgencyatthis time.However,everybody I talked towasvery interested inourworkandwerehappy toknow that there is a European Organization who looks after the right to education for sickchildrenandadolescents.IwouldadviseallofyoutocontactyourownNationalOmbudspersonforChildrentointroduceyourselftohim/herandtotalkaboutthesituationofhospitalteachinginyourowncountries.IhavethefeelingthatthiscouldbeverypowerfulandthattheOmbudspersonscouldhelpyouwhereandwhenyouwanttoincreasehospitalteachinginyourcountry.IwishyouallgoodluckwiththegoodworkyouaredoingeverydayandalsotowishyouaniceandpeacefulDecember-season.Warmregards,

Onthe27thofOctober2016,theBoardof Directors visited our hospital schoolin Poznań, Poland. The primaryobjectiveofthevisitwastogettoknowthe specifics of hospital schooling hereinPoznań.Additionally,theparticipantshad the possibility to learn about thebackground of the hospital and toidentifyanyprospectiveissues.

We are one of the three hospitalschools in Poznań, established in 1971,when the Clinical Hospital of PoznanUniversityofMedical Sciences came intoexistence.Now it is the largestpaediatrichospital inPoznan.

As a union of kindergarten, primaryschool and junior high school, we runclasses for children and adolescentsaged from 3 to 18. Our activities areorganized into two equal areas:education and teaching. Our team ofemployees consist of 11 educators, 10kindergarten teachers and 25 teachersat different teaching levels. Theeducators are responsible forextracurricular activities. The teachershelp the students to clear the backlogcausedbytheillnessandgivethemthechancetocontinuetheirschooldutiesatthesamelevel,asattheirregularschools,duringtheir

stay in hospital. Ourstudents also have theopportunitytotakeexternalexamsinourschool.

We work in 14 differenthospital wards. We copewithchildrensufferingfromthe chronic diseases,unfortunately sometimesthese are incurablediseases.

On October 14 and 15 2016, aprofessional team from thechildren'swardattheUniversityRehabilitation Institute Soca,Republic of Slovenia (U.R.I.Soca), participated in a studytourtoBudapest,Hungary.

Two teachers from the school department atURI Soca,which operateswithin Ledina PrimarySchool, also joined the excursion. During the excursion we visited a rehabilitation center foradults,locatedontheoutskirtsofthecapitalofHungary.Welearnedabouttheactivitiesofthelocal paediatric clinic, The Department for the Rehabilitation of Children, Bethesda.Weweregivenapresentationonindividualpatientsandtheirdiseases.Wewerealsoshowntheareasinwhichtheyworkandthespecifictherapeuticactivitiestheyworkwith,suchasspeechtherapytreatment,Conductivetherapy,physiotherapy,etc.OurprofessionalteamvisitedtheCapitalHealthResortSchool.WeattendedaschoollessononthetextofaHungarianwriter.Theteacherexplainedtheorganizationandworkoftheirhospitalschool.Theschoolhasrecently focusedonfindinggoodonlineteachingstrategies for learnerswithlong-termillness.Themorningprogramendedwithamusicworkshop,ledbyamusictherapist.Theworkshopwasattendedbychildrenwiththeirparents,educators,andourprofessionalteam.Despitelanguagebarriers,wecommunicatedsuccessfullythroughthemusic,whichwasevident inthesmilesonourfaces.Our visit concluded with a lecture on sidorsal risotomie. The lecture included the results ofintervention,whichuntilnowonlyconsideredchildren.Theheadmistressofthechildren'swardatU.R.I.Soca,Dr.HerminaDamjan,gaveapresentationontheworkofU.R.I.Soca,withanemphasisonthechildren'sward.ThemeetingconcludedwithaninvitationtothehoststovisitU.R.I.Soca.

TheLeHoProject–LearningathomeandinthehospitalLeHoisanEU-fundedprojectthatdescribestheeducationalsituationacrossEurope(andEgypt)faced by children with medical needs, and investigates the use ofexisting Information andCommunicationsTechnology(ICT)tohelptheirlearninginhomeandhospitaleducation(HHE).

This international network of partners is from both higher and secondary educationalestablishments.

Backgroundtotheproject

Youngchildrenwithmedicalneedsoftenlackaccesstoeducation,eventhoughthebenefitsofattendingschoolhavelongbeenrecognised.Childrenwhoattendschoolregularlynotonlylearnmore,buttheyalsomakemoreconnectionswiththeirpeersandthisaidstheirrecoveryaswellastheirsocialandphysicaldevelopment.

Whenachild is ill, theyeithermissschoolcompletely,or if theyarewellenoughtogohome,theyareisolatedathomeandlackcontactwiththeirteachersandfriends.

To overcome some of these issues, many schools have turned to ICT to help themmaintaincontactwiththeirpupilswhomaybeoffschoolduetoillness,andtheLeHoprojectwassetuptoinvestigatewhichworkedbest.


Themainobjectivesandoutputs

Thespecificobjectivesoftheprojectare:

• To improve the education of ill children using ICT technologies, either via a connection withhis/herownclass/homeschool,orviaaconnectiontoavirtualclassroomofotherstudents(atadistance,athomeorinahospital).

• Tohelphospital/hometeacherstousemoderntechnologies.• ToprovidehelpfulICTsolutionsforparentsandfamiliesofstudentswithmedicalneeds.• ToanalysethecontributionofICTanddigitalmediatosupporthomeandhospitaleducation.

LeHoaimstocreateapoolofICT-basedresourcesthatcanbeusedinhospitalschooleducation,and these include a series of national and international webinars, a toolkit of resources forteacherstouseandadapt,apracticalguideforteachersaswellasmorespecialisttoolswhichinclude a scale for teachers touse tomeasure thequality of the student experience andalsoinformationabouttheHHEsituationacrossEurope.

The27thofNovember2016theChildren´sHospitalismovingfromthishospital…

…intothisnewhospital,NKS,KarolinskaUniversityHospital.

ThenewhospitalisabigchangeforusandthepeoplelivingintheareaofStockholm.Anotherbigchange forall thehospital teachers inSweden is that theSwedishParliamenthasmadenewpolicydocumentsforhospitalteaching.Duringautumn2016theNationalAgencyforeducationarevisitingmostofourhospitalschoolsforan inspection.Thepurpose istohelpallthehospitalschoolstodevelopandfindwaystoworkinaccordancewiththeguidelines.Therehasbeena lawinSwedensince1962thatthechildrenwhoaretreated inhospitalhavethe legal right to get education during their stay in the hospital. The latest policy documentsabouthospitalteachingareabouttwentyyearsold,sowewelcomethenewdocuments.

HellomembersofHOPE!MynameisAnthonyBurkeandIamthenewDeputyCMfromIreland.IamprincipalteacherofLinnDaraSchoolinCherryOrchardHospital inDublin. After seventeen yearsas a math and special education teacher in secondaryschools, I became a hospital teacher in 2012. I loveworkingasahospitalschool teacher.The job issovariedandinteresting.LinnDaraisthelargestof6MentalHealthinpatientunitsin the Republic of Ireland. The children and adolescents,who come to our hospital school, are usually teenagersbutcanbebetween6and18yearsold.Wehave24bedsintheinpatientunit,12placesinourdayhospitalandalso

haveestablishedaparttimeeducationprogramforupto20youngpeoplewhoneedadditionalsupporttoreengagewitheducationduetomentalhealthdifficulties.LinnDaraSchoolhas8fulltimeand2part-timeteachers.Our inpatient unit moved into a new purpose builtbuildinginDecember2015.We are now on the same campus as our day hospital,whichmakesitmucheasierforteacherswhoworkacrossbothsites.Weareveryfortunatetohavemodernschoolfacilities including a sports hall, fitness suite, homeeconomics kitchen, art rooms, pottery room and awoodworkroom.AspartofanErasmus+project,LinnDaraSchoolisco-hostinganinternationalconferenceontheEducationofYoungPeoplewithMentalHealthDifficultiesonMarch30/31inDublin.

Our school is really excited about this althoughit’s a lot of work! It’s fantastic to see that anumber of HOPE members have alreadyregistered to attend the conference. HellomembersofHOPE!My name is Emese Borbás and I am the new CM fromHungary.I work as a special education teacher and therapist inTabithaHospiceHouseforChildrenandYoungAdults.IamanactivememberoftheAssociationofHungarianHospitalTeachers, and I am currently working on a PhD at theEducationalSciencesDoctoralSchoolofELTE.TheTabithaHospiceHouse forChildrenandYoungAdultswas opened in September 2011. The House gives freesupportforpatientsandtheirfamiliesfromtheageof0to24.TheHouseplaysacentralroleinthemedicalsupplyofchildrensufferingfromaterminaloralifelimitingillness.

TabithaHospiceHouseforChildrenandYoungAdults is the biggest children's hospice inHungarywithitsfivebeds.Our work is sometimes difficult because ofprofessionalmisunderstandingsandthesocialfearofchildhooddeath.Weactivelyworkforchildren’s palliative care to be acknowledgedand respected.We are continuously learningand improving ourselves, and at the sametime we are sharing expertise, skills andknowledge. For new volunteers training isheldtwiceayear.

Inthebeginning,itwasnoteasy,butwearereallyproudofourwork,andtherearesomeresults of these five years:We have helpedmorethan160families.We have reachedmore than 3500 “patientdays”.The Tabitha Hospice House holds regularprograms for the siblings involved and griefcounselling for the whole family. TabithaMemoryday isorganizedeveryyear for thefamiliesingrief.
