Beautiful EastThere is no doubt that Eastern Indonesia offers stunning nature panorama and unique culture that can be great tourism potentials. However, this does not mean that those potentials can en-courage areas in Eastern Indonesia to develop their tourism sector.A number of areas have captured this opportunity beforehand, such as West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and Raja Ampat Papua. Considering the promising opportunity, some areas have ac-tively promoted their tourism potentials.Idonesian Tourism Promotional Board (BPPI) has also seen this potential and focuses on promo-tion on potentials in Eastern Indonesia. Chairper-son of BPPI, Yanti Sukamdani said that currently,

there are many areas categorized as disadvantaged areas that have amazing tour-ism potentials and can be developed to boost the local economy.Unfortunately, most of this type of areas are still lacking in infrastructure to support tourism sector.Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar agreed that eastern Indonesia has great tourism potentials. The potentials in disadvantaged and border areas should be managed and designed into special-interest tourism. “This is perfect to be developed considering the great prospects,” said Sapta.Sapta expects that special interest tourism like adventure tourism targeting on young people can encourage them to love their country more. Thus, eastern Indo-nesia is suitable to be offered as future tourist destination if we can work together to develop the region. Let’s introduce and promote eastern Indonesia as beautiful region and worth a visit.

The sea around Komodo Island offers vibrant colors and exotic marine life which

will enchant divers and snorkelers alike as endless schools of fish ride the waterways rushing up from deep sea vents, below them the seabed is covered with a thick carpet of florescent corals and marine invertebrates, an underwater photographers paradise.

The waters that surround the island are turbulent and teeming with unparalled marine life. A ma-rine reserve has recently been es-tablished and this reserve is largely undocumented and remains un-explored. Komodo National Park was established in 1980. It was declared as a Man and Biosphere

Reserve and a World Heritage Site in 1986. KNP includes three major islands - Komodo, Rinca and Pa-dar and numerous smaller islands together totaling 41,000 ha of land contains 132,000 ha of marine wa-ters.

The corals in Komodo Nation-al park are pristine, with Mantas, sharks, turtles, dolphins, dugong, many pelagics, to the tiny pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, frog fish, you name it we’ve got it. The sites vary from gentle easy coral slopes to heart pounding adrena-lin rides, from the warm waters of the Flores Sea in the north to the chillier waters down south in the In-dian ocean, the underwater terrain is so varied with sheer cliff walls,

Flores is the most fascinating and beautiful island. Long hidden in the shadows of its more famous

neighbor Bali, the island of Flores is finally emerging as a unique destination of its own. So, after visiting the lair of the Komodo dragons, take time to marvel at some of the wonders of Flores. Here you can swim in pristine lakes and waterfalls, dive at one of the 50 spectacular dive sites, go kayaking among craggy coasts and mangrove shores, explore mysterious caves and be warmly welcomed by the island’s people in their rituals, dances and daily life.

Flores spells adventure, diving, eco-tours, and mountain climbing in-terspersed with visits to prehistoric heritage sites, traditional villages and cultural events.

Until recently, many tourists have only been familiar with Labuan Bajo, the small port located on the western-most tip of the island, and the taking off point for a visit to the last natural habitat of the prehistoric Komodo dragons, the

islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar. Situated in the province of East

Nusa Tenggara, Flores is a long is-land that contains some of the world’s best kept secrets. A chain of volcanoes stretches the length of this 450 km long and narrow island, creating complicated V-shaped valleys and knife-edged ridg-es - terrain that was near impenetrable until recently and has separated the is-land into many distinct ethnic groups.

Administratively the island is di-vided into 8 districts; West Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Nagekeo, Ngada, Ende, Sika and East Flores. Further east are the adjacent islands of Alor and Lembata.

Here you will find some of the world’s most exotic underwater life. Diving in the pristine seas of Komodo, divers find themselves swimming along with huge manta rays, dolphins and dugongs, while whales can be seen passing Flores’s east coast during their migration period.

The island itself is surrounded by

sparkling white beaches, where one beach even has pink sand. Mt. Ke-limutu, near the town of Maumere, has three different coloured lakes that can change colour from time to time.

Besides Komodo dragons, Flores has been in the world’s limelight with the discovery of the Flores hobbit, or homo floresiensis, a new hitherto un-known prehistoric human species, whose remains were found in the caves of Liang Bua.

This island is indeed ancient, hav-ing been untouched for centuries, once inhabited by prehistoric men and still living prehistoric animals, as well as containing remnants of a petrified for-est.

At the easternmost tip of the island, Larantuka is famous for its Easter-week rituals that still continue the old Portuguese traditions brought here some 500 years ago. While at adjacent Lembata , islanders hunt whales manu-ally, harpooning precariously from small boats. ***

There is not much tourism promotions conducted through film in Indonesia. Film can

actually become effective media to promote the natural beauty and cultural uniqueness of certain region to attract people to come.

“After Laskar Pelangi and Eat, Pray, Love, there aren’t any movies that give succesfull effect on tourism sector,” said Lola Amaria when becoming a speaker in a talkshow “Film as Effective Media for Tourism Promotion” in Jakarta Con-vention Center, Sunday (30/08/2014).

Lola who is also the producer of Negeri Tanpa Telinga (The Land with-out Ears) gave example that the United States is one of the countries that has successfully increased the popularity of the country through film. “Many movies produced in the United States that use the names of the areas in the country such as Leaving Las Vegas, Crazy in Alabama, Hawai Five-o, and New York I Love You,” said Lola.

Similar thing can also be done by In-donesia. “It’s true that the film industry in the United States is huge and has been recognized worldwide, but it’s not too late for Indonesia to make film as media

for tourism promotion,” said Lola.Actresses/actors, film director and

producer have also said that the shoot-ing location of Sex and The City can be a tour package. “There are tour pack-ages that invite people to see places where the film making took placec,” Lola explained.

Wiryanti Sukamdani, Chairperson of Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI) also said that in the future, films that are made to promote Indonesia should have more vulgar title. To reach the target of sales 2014 as much as Rp 3 trillion, PT Paramount Enterprise

Paramount allocates Rp 90 billion on hotel investment in Balikpapan with the total of 150 rooms. In addition to that, another mega project which is still under construction is a superblock in Bali.

“We build sky villa equipped with shopping mall, hotel and office space in Bali on a 3.5 hectare land. The su-perblock is also completed with private beach as long as 140 meters. The com-

pany is also going to develop super-block in Sumatra, which is now in the phase of looking for suitable location,” he said.

Andreas added that besides areas considered as prospective areas, ag-gressive expansion to areas outside Java is aimed to improve the compa-ny’s recurring income. The main de-velopment in Serpong is divided 50:50 with Summarecon in terms of land divi-sion, thus we do greater expansion to megaproject outside Java.

“I believe that property industry con-tinues to grow for it was only the cour-age to invest and buy property prod-ucts, which was decreasing last year. Now, consumers are more confident to invest and buy property products,” An-dreas said. (*)

Nami Island in South Korea is crowded by visitors who want to directly see the beauty of the

island used as one of the shooting place for a Korean Drama Winter Sonata. In Indonesia, there is Belitung Island in the province of Bangka-Belitung that also gained popularity after Laskar Pelangi the movie (taken from a Novel written by Andrea Hirata) was made there.

According to Wiryanti Sukamdani, Chairperson of Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), a film that dis-plays natural beauty of certain area will be very effective to promote the area as well as attract visitors.

“Tourism sells dreams and beauties that can be visualized through a film,” said Yanti when becoming a speaker in a talkshow “Film as Effective Media for Tourism Promotion” in Jakarta Conven-tion Center, Sunday (30/08/2014).

The success of certain area in gain-ing popularity through a film will be used as recommendation for BPPI to other areas as a way to pack promotion creatively.

This year, BPPI in coordination with Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) is going to visit some areas in Indonesia. “We are going to discuss

about areas and aspects that can be promoted and we’ll explain how Bang-ka-Belitung can be exposed through film,” Yanti explained.

Yanti said that film can easily trans-fer the beauty of certain area to many people. In addition, the story of the film can also introduce the local culture and tradition.

“Even if the film is no longer played in the cinema, people who are interest-ed in can still see the beauty by directly visiting the location where the film mak-ing took place,” Yanti explained.

She gave more examples. The film-ing location of Eat Pray Love in Bali is another place visited by people since the movie was made there. “People come to Bali looking for the area where Julia Robert cycling and many of them also visited the house of Ketut Liyer,” said Yanti.

Talkshow “Film as Effective Media for Tourism Promotion” is part of the series of activities of Indonesia Tourism and Creative Economy Fair held by BPPI on 29 – 31 August 2014 in Cendrawasih Hall, Jakarta Convention Center. Aceh Diving Competition (ADC) and underwater flag ceremony are planed to become annual

agenda in Aceh Province. Chairperson of ADC octowandi said this in Sabang. Ext year, both events are planned to be held in Banyak Island, Aceh Singkil regency.

“Aceh Diving Competition organiz-es diving competition, which is followed by 152 participants from Indonesia and abroad. The event was held in tourism area Gapang, Sabang. The categories competed include Fin Swimming (male and female), 5 Point Underwater ori-entation (oBA 5 Point), Bouyancy and Underwater clean up,” he explained.

ADC committee provided a total prize of Rp 55 million to winners from the category of Fin Swimming 3000, oBA 5 Point and perfect-buoyancy and two doorprize winners. The committee also held flag ceremony to celebrate the 69th Independence of the Republic of Indonesia 12 meter under the water of Gapang sea.

“The ceremony became the main ritual of ADC 2014, which was then fol-

lowed by the delivery of prizes to the winners of the competition,” octowandi said.

Public Relation Staff for Sabang Ad-ministration Board (BPKS) T Mahli Yuni said that BPKS always fully supports every important event that can improve

tourism sector in Weh Island.“We hope that international events

like this can be held as often as pos-sible in order to promote Sabang to international world as well as improve the income of the local community,” he said. (*/ant)

Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy recorded the number of tourist arrival during the

period of January – July 2014 to reach 5.32 million people. This figure increased 9.37 percent compared to the same period in 2013.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu said that the growth shows the great potentials of tourism sector together with cre-ative economy that serve as strategic economic sector in the future national economy.

“The contribution of this sector to the national economy continues to increase along with the growth of the sector, which is above the growth of Gross Domestic Income (GDI),” she said in Jakarta recently.

Mari said that foreign tourist arrival shows significant increase that can be seen from the cumulative number over the past seven months of January – July 2014. Thus, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is optimistic that the target of 9.3 – 9.5 million foreign tourist visits can be achieved.

She added that with the remaining time until August, Mari is optimistic that the figure will continue to increase con-sidering that tourist visit in the second semester is usually higher that the first semester.

Meanwhile, in accordance to the data from the Bureau of Statistics and Center of Data and Information Minis-try of Tourism and Creative Economy, foreign tourist visit during July 2014 reached 777,210 people or grew 8.28

percent compared to the same period last year, which was 717,784 people. However, it slightly decreased com-pared to the period of June 2013, which was as many as 851,475 people.

Based on the country of origin, the highest growth is from United Arab Emirates as many as 480.12 percent. It is followed by Saudi Arabia by 421.06 percent, Bahrain by 156.76 percent, Egypt by 70.23 percent and China by 35.25 percent.

Cumulatively, from January to July 2014 compared to the same period in 2013, Bahrain experienced the high-est growth, which is 69.68 percent. It is followed by United Arab Emirates (54.61%), Egypt (46.95%), Saudi Ara-bia (42.84%) and China (25.96%). (*)

Garuda Indonesia Airlines is going to serve three new routes in the area of intra Sulawesi and

Nusa Tenggara started on September 1. 2014. The routes are Makassar – Kolaka (South East Sulawesi), Makassar – BauBau (South East Sulawesi) and Mataram – Sumbawa Besar.

Sales and Marketing Director Gar-uda Indonesia, Erik Meijer in the press conference said that the opening of new routes is part of the continuation of company’s expansion program. It is the form of our commitment in support-ing the national economy development through the improvement of intra-areas connectivity in Indonesia.

“The new routes are served by Garuda Indonesia Explore Turboprop ATR 72-600 with the capacity of 70 passengers. I’ll give the details, the flight of Makassar – Kolaka (GA 4824) departs from Makassar at 9.05 am and arrives in Kolaka at 9.55 am. The return flight of Kolaka – Makassar (GA 4825) departs from Kolaka at 10.25 am and arrives in Makassar at 11.15am,” Eric explained.

Makassar – BauBau flight (GA 4828) departs from Makassar at 6.05 am and arrives in BauBau at 7.00 am. The return flight of BauBau – Makas-sar (GA 4829) departs from BauBau at 7.30 am and arrives in Makassar at 8.25

am. Makassar – Kolaka and Makassar – BauBau routes are going to operate once a day (daily flight).

“Meanwhile, Mataram – Sumbawa Besar (GA 4034) departs from Mataram at 1.30 pm and arrives in Sumbawa Be-sar at 2.10 pm. The return flight Sumba-wa Besar – Mataram (GA 4035) departs from Sumbawa Besar at 2.40 pm and ar-rives in Mataram at 3.20 pm. This route operates four times a week,” he said.

Garuda Indonesia is also going to add flight frequency for Makassar – Lu-wuk (return) from once a day to twice a day. It is part of the attempt to fulfill the increasing market demand, especially for Makassar – Luwuk route. (*)

Domestic airlins will maximalize the existing routes to compete with foreign airlines approaching

the ASEAN Economic Community (MEA) next year. PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk for example, choose to optimalize the routes in South East Asia region.

Ikhsan Rosan, Public Relation Manager Garuda Indonesia said that Garuda Indonesia has dominated the routes in South East Asia region such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bang-

kok. Generally, we have dominated the routes in ASEAN with the highest flight frequency like Jakarta – Singapore route, which is now served eight times per day.

“In the second half of this year, Gar-uda Indonesia is planning to open new direct route to Manila, Mumbai, London and Great Britain. Garuda Indonesia has also joined the Global Skyteam network, which has 1,064 routes in 178 countries. This step has been taken to

attract the interest of Garuda’s passen-gers,” said Ikhsan.

He added that Garuda Indonesia needs to improve its performance by boosting the number of passenger. In the first half of 2014, Garuda Indonesia experienced loss of US$ 211 million. Last year, the airline carried 25 million passengers and 4.5 – 5 million of them are international flights.

“Therefore, I hope there will be ex-pansion and improvement of the airline so that it can increase the number of passenger to an average of 10% - 20% per year,” he said.

According to Arif WIbowo, Presi-dent Director Citilink, Garuda Indone-sia’s subsidiary Citilink prioritize the domestic routes. Citilink will maximal-ize the domestic routes and to compete with other airlines, it will add the flight frequency of each domestic route to at least three flights for each route.

Agus Soedjono, Senior Manager Corporate Communication Sriwijaya Air said that the airline still focuses on the medium flight service such as providing meal facility. Through this way, I hope the regional routes to South East Asia such as Dili and Penang can have opti-mal occupancy. (*)

Foreign tourist visit to Central Java until now has reached more than 400,000 people. This figure

shows significant increase compared to the previous year, which had the total of 390,000 people.

Head of Central Java Tourism of-fice Prasetyo Ari Wibowo said that the number of foreign tourists visiting Cen-tral Java until August 2014 has reached 400,000 people. This number continues to increase since there is still plenty of

time in the next few months for foreign tourists to visit the province.

“Tourism Office is targeting the in-crease of tourist visit up to 10%. The potentials of Central Java are quite big. However, we realize that we’re still lack of support in terms of sufficient infra-structure and facilities. Thus, we need support of sufficient infrastructure in the future. In the near time, we’re going to invite tour operators and event organiz-ers (Eo) to see the potentials of Central

PT Angkasa Pura I is ready to provide Rp 7.5 trillion for the mega project of Kulonprogo

Airport development, which will start its construction in 2015.

Farid Indra Nugraha, Secretary of AP I said that the development of Ku-lonprogo Airport is aimed to replace Adi Sutjipto International Airport that cur-rently has experienced over capacity. With the concept of airport city, this air-port is expected to operate in 2017.

“Kulonprogo Airport construction is started from zero. In addition to physical development, it requires budget for land acquisition. AP I is going to establish a joint venture with investor GVK from India. GVK is an airport management company that successfully develops Mumbai and Bangalore Airport in India,”

Farid explained.Although there has not any agree-

ment on the percentage of share yet, the management of AP I expect to be the majority shareholder. The partner-ship has been established since 2011 through the signing of MoU in New Del-hi, India.

“Currently, the construction of Ku-lonprogo Airport has entered the land acquisition stage and Rp 900 billion has been prepared for it. The process is ex-pected to be completed by April 2015 and then the groundbreaking can be done in May 2015.

Farid added that the construction of Kulonprogo Airport is estimated to take three years. AP I estimate that the bud-get required for this mega project will reach Rp 7.5 trillion and can be more

along with the development of airport city concept. The budget is totally taken from the joint venture and not from the government.

of “quantum leap” in the tourism and creative economy sector. “The point is that tourism and creative economy should become the priority of national economic development,” said Yanti in Jakarta recently.

She expects that the idea of quan-tum leap can be implemented in tour-ism and creative economy sector in the 2014 – 2019 Cabinet. Quantum leap of

tourism and creative economy means a breakthrough to reach the target of for-eign tourist visit that set up to 20 – 15 million people by 2019.

According to Yanti, the target can be achieved through a leap in the field of human resources development and local infrastructure. In this case, hu-man resources should have profes-sional certification, competence and LSU (Business Certification Booard) to assess product, service and manage-ment.

“It is expected that through this, ser-vice, accessibility and connectivity to tourist destinations can run well so that tourists will feel comfortable and easy to travel to Indonesia,” she said.

The second step in quantum leap is by increasing the number of events and great sales in a year to boost tourist ar-rival both foreign and domestic such as Duty Free Shop to attract tourists for shopping. The events should be held not only in Jakarta, but also in other ar-eas throughout Indonesia.

Therefore, the budget for tourism promotion should significantly increase and it should be realized that tourism sector the fourth biggest contributor to national income after oil and gas, coal and palm.

Related to the idea of Jokowi to build the Sea Toll, this can help devel-oping cruise ship tourism in Indone-sia. It is expected that later there will be more harbors and marinas built to attract more cruise ships visiting Indo-nesia.

Surabaya is going to be the host for Asian Fashion Week (AFW) 2014, which will be held at Java

Paragon Hotel on 14 – 18 August 2014. According to Group President & CEo AFW Arwin Sharma, as many as 37 designers from 14 countries are ready to present their best designs in the event held annually.

“The countries that have been con-firmed to send their representatives are Russia, India, Mexico, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Vietnam, Australia and Nepal. Five designers are from Indonesia,” Ar-win said.

Arwin said that if most of fashion shows are held in indoor ballroom, AFW will be different. The organizing commit-tee chose different concept by holding the fashion show outdoor. Although it is held outdoor, not all people are allowed to enter the venue for invitation and en-trance ticket are required.

“AFW was firstly held in 2011 in Guangzhou, China. It was then followed by the same event held in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam in 2013 and then last year in Japan. Surabaya is the first city in Indonesia trusted to be the host of the event. Surabaya has attracted the

world attention through the hospitality of the people and its success in man-aging the environment,” he said.

He added that full support from Surabaya Mayor has made the organiz-ing committee has no doubt to choose the city as the host of AFW 2014. This year, Sharma is targeting 400 audi-ences per day. He hopes that AFW can fulfill its main mission, which is to inte-grate fashion of designers from all over Asia and other countries.

“The essence of fashion should be understood universally. This means that there shouldn’t be any cultural or other boundaries. If we talk about fash-ion, it is very universal. Although every design contains traditional characteris-tic, it is aimed to enrich the value of the design itself so that it can also serve as means of unity,” he said.

AFW 2014 is also planned to be at-tended by Miss India and Miss Japan as guest stars. Sharma calls it a history for this is the first time two Asian am-bassadors come in one fashion event.

Surabaya to Become Host of Asian Fashion Week 2014

The government of Japan is going to apply free visa policy to Indonesian citizens who

visit Japan started on January 2015. Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa said this after the meeting with Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Fumio Ishida in Jakarta.

“The free-visa policy will probably be implemented in January 2015. Thus, the Indonesian government is currently conducting the process to issue the free-visa policy for Japanese people who travel to Indonesia. We hope the free-visa policy between the two coun-tries can be done synergically,” Marty said.

According to the official website of the Embassy of Japan, on June 17th, 2014, the government of Japan has of-ficially announced the plan to apply the free-visa policy to the holders of the Republic of Indonesia’s passports.

However, the policy will be limited to e-passport holders who are planning to

stay in Japan under 15 days and have registered in the Japanese Embassy or Japanese Consulate.

The implementation and procedure of free-visa policy are still under dis-cussion. Until this process completed, Indonesian citizens traveling to Japan

still need visa in accordance to their purpose of visit.

There are several types of visa is-sued by the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia such as visa for temporary visit for traveling, business and family affairs. (*)

President Director Angkasa Pura (AP) II Tri S Sunoko said that the capacity of Soekarno-Hatta

International Airport Cengkareng, Tangerang is predicted to increase by 177% after the revitalization in various terminals at the airport completed in 2015.

“Later after the expansion and de-velopment of terminals, the capacity of the airport will become 61 million passengers or increase by 177% com-pared to the current capacity, which is 22 million passengers,” said Tri.

AP II is doing various improvement and development at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which include Ter-minal 3 Ultimate that is projected as the most modern and sophisticated termi-nal in Indonesia. After the development of Terminal 3 Ultimate completed in 2015, AP II will continue with the revi-talization of Terminal 1 and 2.

“Another development that is under preparation at Soekarno-Hatta Airport is the integrated building located be-tween Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The integrated building is projected to be a one-stop service where there are com-

mercial area, mall, hotel, parking area, train station and automated people mover system inside,” he said.

He added that previously AP II sup-ports the eradication of any forms of

criminalism at the airport area like the one revelead during the sudden inspec-tion conducted by Commission of Cor-ruption Eradication (KPK) at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. (*)

Minister of Transportation EE Mangindaan said that the ministry has prepared flight

routes of Davao, Manado and Raja Ampat and airport improvement to support tourism sector in Manado.

“Preparation is going on for the supporting routes are already avail-able, all we need to do is to prepare it,” Mangindaan said in Manado.

He said that the route of Mana-do – Manokwari is already available we well as the route of Raja Ampat. Garuda Airline is soon open those flight routes, including to Davao.

“It’s not only Garuda, Sriwijaya Air has confirmed its readiness to serve the routes and I’m going

to sign the license in the next few days,” he said.

Related to the improvement of Samratulangi Airport, Mangindaan said that the ministry has asked for the permission of North Sulawesi Governor to extend the airport. He asks the runway to be extended for another 250meter. The provincial government even offers the runway to be extended for 500 meters, but Mangindaan thinks that this requires further discussion and coordination considering that there are some consequences that should be dealt with.

The runaway expansion is also related to land acquisition and it still

cannot be guaranteed that the local people will agree. Thus, the 250m expansion is expected to get per-mission for a starter. If it is approved, then the centralization of Lion Air in Manado will be able to be imple-mented so that it can bring wider economic impact. (*)

It is still kept, cared and de-fended its originality by the government of Ende regency. Facing the wide Indian ocean, the island of Sumba in the province of

East Nusatenggara is a surfer’s paradise. The large rolling Sumba barrels usually appear between May through october when waves can be either very high and strong or very flat as breaks are directly exposed to wide open ocean swells. This kind of powerful surf, however, though very challenging, should only be ventured by professionals. However, throughout the year, swells rise from 3 to 6 feet.

Although as yet little known on the tourist map, surprisingly the island of Sumba has a number

luxurious, well frequented resorts. The Nihiwatu Resort, for example, describes itself as “the ultimate in privacy, exclusivity, views and ro-mance”, and has been awarded Indonesia’s 2nd best hotel by Tri-padvisor. Additionally there is the Sumba Nautil Resort both in the south west of Sumba, another fa-vourite with surfers.

It was at 8.30 pm when the bus we were traveling from Jakarta for six hours arrived at Tirta Sanita Spa

The campground can be reached from the city of Kuningan that is located at an altitude of 466 meters above sea level to Cigugur sub-district as far as 9 km to the West. Road infrastructure is already available from Kuningan city even though public transport to the campsite is still limited.

Palutungan is located on the south-ern slope of Mount Ciremai at an alti-tude of 1,100 meters above sea level. Entering the area, visitors are charged Rp13, 500 per person plus Rp 2,000 for motorcycles and Rp 4,000 for cars.

It was such a great time to end our activities by visiting Putri waterfall. It can be reached in about 10 minutes from the entrance gate of Palutungan. For female visitors, there is a sign put on a tree that prohibits menstruating women entering the waterfall area.

If one day is not yet enough for you to explore and enjoy the natural beauty, visitors can camp in the area provided by MCNP. “Camping provides visitors with the sensation of the cold night air, birdsong and other animal noises that accompany their camping time,” said one of the team building and outbound, Widodo.

The outbound activities were then continued by a visit to the center of the creative industry not so far away from Palutungan, namely the crafters of Angklung from Lumbu Angklung Studio owned by Kang Pendi and the producer of Jeniper (lemon squeeze) and tape (sweet fermented sticky rice) in three places, Ibu Murnah namely, Ibu Misrah, and Sri Lestari.

According to Teddy, the develop-ment of the creative economy in Kunin-gan became the initial pilot program of Kuningan Tourism and Cultural Office, such as collecting the batik artisans, angklung, to unique culinary vendors. In the implementation Disparbud go hand in hand with the community to make tourism villages, and communities are actively involved in the development of tourism industry in the region.

Cigugur Fish Pond

The first day activity was ended by visiting Cigugur fish pond. This is one of unique tourist destinations in Kunin-gan because in this pond, we can find a rare fish known by the local as Kan-cra Bodas or thw White Fish (the God’s Fish). This fish is the species of Labeo-

barbus Doumensis. There is a legend that makes the local people call it as the God’s Fish.

Purportedly, Cigugur that is located 3 km above the city of Kuningan, in 1430 had the name of Padara Village. At that time, the local people needed source of water. Ki Gede was then meditated and thrusted a keris (wavy double-bladed dagger) at the foot of a green hill on Mount Ciremai.

At that time, thundering sound like landslide was heard and therefore the village was named Cigugur. Water came out from the root of the tree, flew to the pond and then continued to the downstream of the village. Ki Gede then caught Kancra Bodas fish from three rivers, namely Cilutung River in Majalengka, Cisanggarung River in Kuningan and Cijolang River in the bor-der of West Java and Central Java. The fish was then put in the Cigugur Fish Pond.

According to senior officer in Kunin-gan Regency Tourism and Cultural of-fice, Slamet Riyadi, those three rivers had crystal clear water for the forests around them were still lush. The clear water made the fish lived and grew well.

Ki Gede reminded the villagers not to disturb the fish for the sake of their future generation. The locals believed that Ki Gede was a wiku or a person who has supernatural or divine power. Due to his power, his internal organ could be seen from outside.

In his old age, Ki Gede was sick and said that he wanted to die as nor-mal people. His will was then conveyed to Syekh Maulana Syarif Hidayatulah or also known as Sunan Gunung Jati in Cirebon. Even Sunan Gunung Jati was surprised to see the crystal clear body of Ki Gede. He helped him to die as normal people by guiding Ki Gede to say Syahadat sentence. Ki Gede said it once and his body suddenly disap-peared.

At that time, Islam was spread by

first Islam missionaries in Indonesia known as wali. The activities were cen-tered in Cirebon. When those wali ar-rived in Kuningan, they found a spring in Cibulan, 10 km to the north of Cigu-gur. They named the fish in Cibulan fish pond Kancra Bodas. It is thought that Sunan Gunung Jati brought the fish to Cibulan, after the fish grew and bred well in Cigugur.

Slamet Riyadi added, “Ki Gede was a leader with great vision and had an ability to see the future. He gave Kan-cra Bodas fish to be kept and not to be eaten because the fish is not suit-able for consumption. It cannot be dry fried, has lots of fat and it doesn’t taste good.”

“The life of the fish becomes the in-dicator of water, which is still clean and unpolluted. Therefore, conservation on Mount Ciremai should be done con-tinuously so that the fish can live and breed,” he said.

Both Cigugur and Cibulan are of-ten visited by people who want to spend weekends together with family or friends. The uniqueness of the pond is that people can swim with the God’s fish. They are tame and will not bite. Fish theraphy is also available here at the cost of Rp 5,000 per hour.

Cibulan Fish Pond

Different from Cigugur Fish and Bathing Pond, in addition to fish pond, bathing pool and fish theraphy, Cibulan also has seven sacred springs called Tujuh Sumur (the Seven Wells).

This tourist attraction is located in Manis Kidul village, Jalaksana sub-district, Kuningan, Cirebon, West Java. It is about 10 km from Kuningan. The admission costs only Rp 2,000 for adult and Rp 1,000 for children.

The pool covers the area of 5 hect-ares and has two big rectangular pools. The first pool has the size of 35m x 15m with the depth of 2m. The second pool has the size of45m x 15m and divided

into two parts with the depth of 60cm and 120cm.

The seven sacred springs are locat-ed at the western corner of the pools. They consist of seven small pools and each has its own name, namely Sumur Kejayaan (the well of glory), Sumur Ke-mulyaan (the well of nobility), Sumur Pengabulan, Sumur Cirancana, Sumur Cisadane, Sumur Kemudahan (the well of easiness) and Sumur Keselamatan (the well of safety).

Purportedly, there is a golden crab inside one of these pools. If lucky enough, visitors can see the crab and their wishes will come true. There is no special admission for entering the Seven Wells, but there is a charity box where people can put money.

The seven wells built around a peti-lasan (resting place), which was known as the resting place of King Siliwangi af-ter returning from the war of Bubat. The petilasan consists of piled menhir-like stone and two striped tiger statues, the symbol of Great King of Padjajaran.

“The wells are crowded by people coming for pilgrimage. They usually come on Friday night or during the Is-lamic month of Maulud. People believe that the water from the seven wells brings bless,” said the keeper of the seven wells, Iman Sariman.

He further said, “The god’s fish live in this pond since hundred of years ago. The breeding is slow, but only one or two fish died every year.”

Research carried out by the Re-search and Development Center of Li-manology LIPI reveals that the fish that weighs 1kg – 15kg with the length up to 75cm is originally from Kuningan.

Slamet Riyadi added, “The group of Kancra Bodas fish only lives in the pond of Cibulan, Cigugur, Pasawahan, Linggarjati and Darmaloka.”

The five ponds are located on the foot of Mount Ciremai. The fish of god can only live in the clear and free from pollution water and this kind of water can only be found in an area which has lush and dense forest,” he explained.

According to the legend, the fish were used to be King Siliwangi’s sol-

diers who rebelled and cursed by the king to be fish. The number of fish in the pond remains the same. Whether or not the legend is true, people are afraid of taking the fish out from the pond because they believe that those who disturb the fish will get in trouble.

Director of Cibulan Nature Tour-ism, HM Didi Sutardi added, “The area around the foot of Mount Ciremai has great natural potential. In addition to Cibulan fish pond, there are plenty of tourist attractions worth of visit.”

The number of tourist visit to this place reaches 1,000 to 2,000 visitors per month and up to 10,000 visitors during holiday season or Idul Fitri. Do-mestic tourists mostly come from Ja-bodetabek, Surabaya and Semarang while foreign tourists are from German, Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

Didi hopes that there will be inves-tors who are interested to cooperate in building hotel and other environmental-ly-friendly buildings.

Linggarjati Convention Build-ing

In addition to enjoying the natural panorama, visiting Kuningan is incom-plete if you have not spent time to visit a building with high historical value, Linggarjati Convention Building located in Cilimus district, Kuningan Regency. The position of the building is exactly on the southern part of Mount Ciremai’s foot. This place can be reached by bus from Jakarta via Luragung. It is only 30 minutes from Kuningan by private ve-hicle.

“This is a historical building where the Indonesian people demanded de facto the independence of the Republic of Indonesia to the Ducth government through the Linggarjati Agreement,” said the manager of Linggarjati Con-vention Building, Sukardi.

The original building is maintained to be kept and a number of things and replica of things used during the agree-ment can be found in this building, which is not served as a museum. This building has a long history. Johanes Van Os was the first person to renovate the house and make it into family house in 1930. Previously, this was a hut be-longed to Ibu Jasitem, who was later married by a Dutch man.

In 1950 – 1975, the building was used as Linggarjati 1 Primary School. In 1985, the son of Johanes Van os, Dr. Willem Van osdanjoty Kulve-Van os who grew up here successfully made

this house into cultural heritage. The building consists of several

rooms, namely the meeting room, sec-retariat room, Lord Killearn’s bedroom, the meeting room between President Soekarno and Lord Killearn, bedroom, bathroom, dining room, ironing room and a store room.

Currently, the facilities available for visitors are parking area, food stall, prayer room, toilet, open garden and an auditorium.

Narada Art Gallery

Not only historical building, we also spent time to visit the collections of Narada Art Gallery built by Mrs. Hj Nan-ti Taufik. The gallery displays various collections of artwork such as masks, mask of Wayang Wong, clothes worn by Topeng dancers, traditional wedding outfit from Cirebon, earthenware stat-ues, bird-shaped wooden carving and many more.

The artwork displayed in the gallery located at Jl Panawuan No 121, Prima Resort Cilimus Kuningan come from Cirebon and other islands throughout Indonesia, which have topeng tradi-tion. The work of international artists such as Gaaltiero Dall’osto, mask from Lebanon and China can also be found here.

Narada Art Gallery’s collection is di-vided into three groups. The first group is Mande Caruban that consists of col-lection from Cirebon such as topeng (mask), clothes, batik, paintings, pho-tos and souvenir masks. The second group is Mande Dwipantara that con-sists of collection of masks and clothes from Java, Madura, Bali, Lombok Ka-limantan and North Sumatera. The third group is International Mande that consists of masks from Venetia (Italy), China, Lebanon and many more.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Ecconomy Mari Elka Pangestu said that as many as 3,479 artists and 1,000 supporting people involved in the Creative

Art and Cultural Parade 2014 held in Jakarta to celebrate the 69th Indonesian Independence. The participants will be assessed by eight juries.

Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy held a pa-rade with the theme of “Indonesia Bersatu” (Indonesia in Unity) that took place in the area around Medan Merdeka and the Palace, Jakarta, on August 18, 2014. The parade involved participants from 33 provinces and three com-munities including the community of Reog Pawitandirogo, Children Police Community from Bekasi and Jember Fash-ion Carnaval. The parade was also enlivened by Istiqlal Marching Band and two state-owned enterprises (BUMN).

Participants not only performed decorated cars that showed the local potentials, but also presented various creativities of the artists in a form of dances, music and other attractive performances.

The jury that consists of singers and choreographer will determine ten best performances. The best performers will achieve special award from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

During the parade, each contingent performed for 2.5

minutes in front of the main stage where the First Lady and other high officials watched the parade.

“The creative art and cultural parade is expected to in-crease creativity of performing art in a form of carnival as well as to increase people’s appreciation towards Indone-sian artworks and culture,” said Mari.

The parade is also expected to create the wave of cre-ativity to increase the competitiveness at national level and create an event that becomes the icon of creative economy of performing art as tourist attraction. (*)

Debus is a traditional art from Banten that shows people’s skill in using the energy of

internal power. The skill enables people to be insusceptible to the attack of sharp weapon or fire. Debus performance is accompanied by music. The collaboration of music and internal power becomes a very interesting performance. Therefore, this tradition is known worldwide. Even Sepultura, a trash metal band from Brazil included debus in their performance.

Debus has now become the tour-ism icon of Banten Province. Banten Provincial Government held Debus Festival 2014 on Saturday (23/8).

ter of Tourism and Creative Economy said that cultural festival is effective way to promote tourism potentials. “Tourism is closely relared to cultural sharing, and uniqueness of culture is valuable attraction,” said Sapta in the opening of Debus Festival 2014 held in Titik Nol Mercusuar (Zero Point Lighthouse), Anyer, Serang Regency.

Banten has abundant tourism po-tentials that include natural tourism (beaches), historical tourism, cultural tourism and many more. This prov-ince is also close to Jakarta, only two-hour drive, so that it can attract tour-ists from Jakarta to visit the province.

Rano Karno, caretaker of Banten Governor said that the implemen-tation of Debus Festival in the Zero Point Lighthouse aims to remind peo-ple to the historical story of the place as well as introduce historical tour-ist attraction in Banten.

“This area is important and histor-ical point for it is the starting point of Anyer – Panarukan road built during the Dutch colonialism,” said Rano.

Promoting Banten Tourism through Debus

Indonesian Tourism & Creative Economy Fair (ITCEF) 2014 held in JCC Jakarta on 29 – 31 August

2014 is targeted to earn Rp 18 – 20 billion.

“We are targeting to have trans-action valued more than Rp 15 bil-lion just like last year, at least RP 18 to 20 billion,” said Chairman of In-donesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI) S.B. Wiryanti Sukamdani during the opening of ITCEF 2014 in JCC Jakarta on Friday (29/8/2014). The event is also targeted to be vis-ited by al least 50,000 visitors.

ITCEF 2014 is expected to be the gathering venue between tour-ism industry that consists of airlines, convention and MICE agencies, tour and travel operators, hotel, restaurants, tourism and creative economy associations, spa, tourism school and its consumers.

This year, as many as 160 par-ticipants joined the event held on the area of 3,500m2 in Jakarta Con-vention Center (JCC). It was open from 10 am to 8 pm. other activities held during the exhibition are table top, house keeping and bed set-up, table set-up, uniform parade, art & cultural performances, stand up

comedy, fashion show, and creative economy workshop.

“We also invited exhibitors from abroad representing every continent including Paraguay, South Korea, Japan, Middle East and Australia,” she said.

The involvement of foreign par-ticipants is expected to widen the market of Indonesia tourism as well as to promote Indonesia internation-ally approaching the implementation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

“We expect them to sell Indo-nesian package in their respective countries after this event,” said Yanti.

According to her, the most im-portant thing for now is the improve-ment of competitiveness and brand-ing of Indonesia tourism in order to enter the AEC, which will open the market for investment, trade and hu-man resources in ASEAN region.

“We have to be ready, ITCEF 2014 has strategic role in respond-ing to the challenge,” she said.

on the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Ecnomy Sapta Nirwandar said that under the leadership of Indonesia’s next president Joko Widodo, it is ex-pected to attract 20 million tourists until the next five years.

Bali Hotels Association (BHA) participation in the International Coastal Cleanup campaign was

another great success. The initiative saw more than 70 hotels under the BHA banner gather over 1600 volunteers to clear debris from several beaches and rivers in Nusa Dua, Legian, Kuta, Seminyak, Tabanan and Ubud. Approximately 19.5km was covered and everyone involved was proud to be part of the solution to help protect Bali’s coastal strip and waterways.

BHA held a similar program last year whereby plastic bags, containers, cutlery, cans, cigarettes and household waste as well as abandoned shoes and fishing debris were just some of the 7,565 items collected. The total trash haul ended up weighing in at over 142,6 kilograms. This year even more volun-

teers donated their time to participate resulting in 435 bags being collected reaching 1,525 kilograms in total.

event which was also supported by the Red Cross Indonesia.

As part of its fifth anniversary cele-bration, Aston Kuta Hotel & Residence once again held a blood donation event at the atrium of Lippo Mall Kuta on Sat-

urday, 30 August 2014. The event start-ed from 11 AM to 1 PM succeeded to collect as much as 57 blood bags from total 72 person registered. Unfortunate-ly, around 15 people were considered not eligible of donating blood. Since they first started their operation in 2009, Aston Kuta Hotel & Residence had held blood donation events four times.

“This blood donation event is a so-cial activity which we include each year as a part of our pre-anniversary event. Charity Run in Nusa Dua, Bali To Support A Housing Renovation Project for Needy Residents in

2014 –Eight resorts from Bali and Lom-bok announced today they have joined hands to organize an inaugural ‘Char-ity Run’ in aid of a housing renovation project

for needy residents in Mengwi, Ba-dung Regency, in partnership with Bali International Sport Week and Nusa Dua Fiesta. The Charity Run will take place on Sunday, 12 october 2014 within the Bali Tourism Development Centre, Nusa Dua on the island’s southern pen-insula.
