PUBLISHER’S NOTE

The cargo industry is the backbone of the economy but it seldom gets the acknowledgement and recognition that it deserves. The sector needs a lot of encouragement to grow further. Hence, India Cargo Awards decided to give the much-

awaited recognition to the real heroes and the movers and shakers of the industry, people with initiative and foresight to take the cargo industry to even greater heights. These stalwarts need to be acknowledged, appreciated and encouraged in every region of the country - East, West, North and South.

As an endeavour to recognise the achievers of the cargo industry, who have worked strenuously towards taking the industry to its heights, India Cargo Awards travelled to Pune to pay accolade to the hard work of the players in West and South India.

Our top-most honour, the Gold Maya, is awarded to those stalwarts who have shaped the industry to the way it is today and created innovative ways to take the industry a notch higher.

The award ceremony is brought to life by a charismatic anchor and singer who makes everyone dance and sings to her beats. At the black-tie, Silver Service event, various performers enthral and amuse the audience. The second edition of India Cargo Awards - West & South was the beginning of a new journey of long-term association for some and renewal of a bond we share with many others.

India Cargo Awards will be travelling to various other cities in India in its subsequent edition.

After the splendid success of the first edition in Goa, India Cargo Awards - West & South, travelled to Pune to celebrate the achievers

at the regional level again. Held on August 3, 2016, at Novotel Pune Nagar Road, the evening was graced by Ajay Kumar, Director, Pune International Airport and Saudamini Naik, Gladrags Mrs India.

Kumar says, “From the economic point of view, Pune city has great potential. Last year, the air cargo sector grew around seven per cent. Domestically, the city has a lot scope as the industry is not using much of air as a mode of movement for cargo even though the domestic total flying capacity is almost thrice of the international capacity.”

Shantanu Bhadkamkar, Chairman, International Federation of Customs Brokers Association (IFCBA), joined the Gallery of Legends. Bhadkamkar can be described as a pioneer of the logistics industry with several positions in national and international trade associations and chambers, be it, China International Logistics Professional Network, FIATA, Multimodal Transport Institute WG SEA, to name a few. He has also been awarded with the Certificate of Merit for World Custom Organisation (WCO) in the 60th World Customs Day.

Manoj Singh, Vice President & Head - Cargo, Mumbai International Airport, was awarded the DDP Game Changer. He is responsible for starting a Greenfield cargo project in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

“A decade back travel was the only priority for the airport but with the changing times, the logistics industry is moving around and hence cargo is also going to be a much-talked subject,” emphasises Singh.

The Face of the Future award went to Saurabh Trikha, Director, Aargus Global Logistics. The group’s business saw almost 100 per cent growth since his joining. Trikha is a graduate in Computer Sciences from Ohio State University, USA and is now pursuing MBA.

The dignitaries appreciated the DDP Group for this initiative. SanJeet, Director, DDP Group, said, “The awards are a true specimen of the contribution of various companies and individuals to take the cargo industry to new heights. These awards recognise extraordinary effort of people who have made the

real difference. India Cargo Awards will make a difference to the industry through recognition of regional talent, thereby raising the bar.”

“Pune International Airport is also creating a separate company for cargo promotion and we will be having a full-fledged building for cargo operation within three years at the airport. Currently we are handling almost 3000 tonnes per month and as far as capacity is concerned we can operate upto 5000 tonnes in a month within the same frame. We are also starting international cargo from our airport soon,” Kumar adds.

Bhadkamkar envisions this profession to be an occupation of first choice for the new generation.

Gallery of Legends SHANTANU BHADKAMKAR

“I thank India Cargo Awards for this recognition. This event has brought out the best out of people and showcases the leaders to the audience,” says Shantanu Bhadkamkar, Chairman IFCBA. Bhadkamkar feels that the industry has not been growing as it should have from the past few years and these events give a

lot of encouragement to people to do their best and achieve above average our industry growth. He shares that the global scenario of the industry is not very optimistic. Even today, India is still doing better. Considering India’s market share in global market we should not worry too much about global slowdown. He also adds that we should become competitive, and improve the ease of doing business; that alone will bring five to six per cent growth for Indian exports.
