HighGear 1September 2012

Wow! The Club Race is over now, but what a spectacle it was! And what a variety a senses were stimulated! The sight of virtually the entire paddock being filled up with Porsches and their transporters, flags, and tents, the sounds of air wrenches, the smells of gasoline and hamburgers cooking, and the feel of the hot sun and the cold, brief rain.

The RMR Club Race is the only event of its kind that the club sponsors each year, at its own race track near Byers called High Plains Raceway (HPR). Our club is one of the five car club owners of the track, who banded together to form Colorado Amateur Motorsports Association, otherwise known as CAMA, and CAMA was responsible for planning, designing, constructing and continuing to improve the track.

After we lost three of our local tracks in one year six years ago, it was a major challenge to get those same five clubs together to find land and to plan, design and construct a new racetrack nearer to Denver than the track at Pueblo. To make a long story short, however, the land was found and purchased, and the track and paddock were built three years ago with hundreds of donations of time and money, generous loans, and money the car clubs owned from Second Creek. It was a very spartan track, with very limited facilities, but it was a track. And, as tracks go, it was a very fine track, superior to anything in our state.

What has been so incredible is the transformation that track has gone through in the last four years from that spartan track to the incredible race venue I witnessed and experienced two weeks ago, thanks to the improvements that CAMA has made to the track, and to the huge success of our event.

The first PCA/RMR Club Race ever held at HPR three years ago on that very spartan track was exciting just because it was on a brand new track, and because the event almost didn’t happen because of the incredible organization required and the dependence on out-of-state racers that our other events don’t have. With a huge degree of volunteerism, however, much of it from the local racers themselves, and enough sponsorships, also significantly coming from the local racers, the very first event turned out to be a success.

The second race and the race last year were even more exciting from an event standpoint, because more out-of-towners entered the race, given the word-of-mouth spread of the quality of the track and the event in general.

This year, however, is where I think the event hit its peak of maturity. With a record 77 racing entrants from as far as Minnesota, Arizona and Texas, we didn’t need the BMW club to help support us. The Advanced DE entrants were numerous as well, further supporting the event. I have raced at other international tracks around the country, like Portland and Las Vegas, and aside from the race itself, nothing is more inspiring than to see all those beautiful Porsches, and all the teams busy around the paddock with their transporters and gaily painted GT3s and Cup Cars, flags flying, with tire truck employees busy mounting tires and mechanics working on their cars. That Saturday, August 11th, I found all of that and more at HPR with the paddock almost completely full! I had to marvel at how far we had come in just three years—from a thirty-six foot wide circuit of asphalt out in the middle of the prairie to a full-fledged race track. I said to myself, “Wow, this is a REAL race track!”

Thank you to all the RMR club members who helped make that happen! And a big ”Thank you” to all the volunteers, without whom the event would not have happened. Finally, a special thanks to Kathy Fricke, who has organized and co-organized this event for the last FOURTEEN years, and who is retiring after this event. We will miss her!

Larry Winkler’s “Steel Affairs”auto extravaganza! Larry Winkler purchased the Mathews Collection a while back and has now opened his own business in the former building(s). A gated parking lot, with enough room to bring in 132 Porsches, awaits us on Sept. 6, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, at 5889 Lamar St, Arvada, CO, 80003! Larry’s personal collection of cars is now on display and what a wonderful collection it is! Beer, wine, soft drinks, water and food will be provided gratis to all. There just might be a door prize or two for those arriving in a Porsche, so come one, come all, to the September RMR-PCA Membership Social. Last month’s RMR-PCA membership social was held at Stevinson Imports on south Broadway. 125 members showed up in their Porsches for food, festivities and of course, coveted Porsche door prizes! A special thank you to, Steve Burt, GM, and Mark Barnett, Porsche Sales Mgr., and the rest of the Stevinson crew for having us back for the third year in a row. They do know how to cook a good burger on the huge grill! Erik Behrendsen, RMR-PCA Program Chairman

September’s issue marks the debut of yet another new, on-going section in your favorite little Porsche Club magazine. It’ll be chockfull of useful

information about tweaking, maintaining, cleaning and improving different aspects of your autobahn burner. It’s called TechTalk.

To accommodate this new monthly article, penned by some of Colorado’s most respected experts and industry professionals, the classified area has been pruned down to just one page with ads now being limited now to just 75 words. The online classifieds (http://rmr.pca.org/staticpages/classifieds.aspx) will remain robust as ever, where photos can also be added to make them even more appealing.

I hope that TechTalk proves to be one of the more popular portions of HighGear. I also hope that it gives many of our sponsors and advertisers an extra chance to lend a bit of their automotive wisdom to the RMR membership. It’ll also be a great place to showcase new technologies, tools, tricks

of the trade, and those tried-and-true techniques that we all might be able to use on our own cars.

TechTalk kicks off with some valuable insight by none other than Walt Fricke, our very own PCA Club Race Technical Rules Chair. His article, on page 21, discusses the nuances of brakes, especially as they relate to taking your Porsche to the track or even a more gentle autocross.

Walt’s article captures his many years of experience on this matter and contains a wealth of information. I challenge any of you reading this issue not to come away with something new and insightful from reading it. This is exactly what I’m hoping all future TechTalk articles will be like.

If you have some questions you would like answered that involve the technical/mechanical aspects of your car (or you have some advice you want to share with the rest of us) please drop a quick email to [email protected]. I would love to throw your queries at our resident experts, suppliers, vendors and shop owners to elicit their input.

In June, earlier this year, Lindsay Lohan smashed her 911 into the back of a truck on a California interstate, claiming the brakes (that had just been replaced two days earlier) simply failed. Kinda like her career.

Ahhh…cooler days are approaching—well, hopefully! Summer is quickly driving by us!

We had our premier driving event, the “High Plains Thunder” Club Race /Advanced Solo DE at HPR in August. There was a good turnout of racers and DE drivers…lots of

local folks and also out-of-state drivers. This was the 20th year for the CR/DE…wow! Thanks to ALL the volunteers that made it happen!

Although summer is winding down and cooler weather is on the way, there are still plenty of upcoming events. For performance driving, there are still two more RMR DE events and one Autocross. AMR will also be having a DE at La Junta. Several tours are on the calendar. There are the Drive for the Kids, AMR’s Fall Tour to a mystery location, and the Broadmoor Brunch tour. Check the RMR calendar for the time and date and check motorsportreg.com for registration.

Please keep your membership information up to date and remember to renew your RMR/PCA membership!

Nifty name badge and colorful car badge order forms can be found on the website: rmr.pca.org.

Hope to see YOU at an RMR event, and don’t forget that it is more fun with YOU there!

RMR/PCACLUB RACE

Any Club Racer will tell you that it’s important to show well at your home race. High Plains is OUR track and we don’t want racers from OTHER regions coming to our place and out-driving us. Especially on this, the 20th renewal

of the first club race ever held. Colorado’s own Alex Welch made sure of this in Sunday’s first sprint race by outpacing the field in a dominant 36-second win over RMR’s own Robert Prilika, Michael McGrath, and Andy Wilzoch.

Tommy Dean came in 6th. Now that’s some home cookin’, folks!

Story by Mike Quigley, Photos by Bruce BellRead on...

Rocky Mountain Region was the very first region to host a PCA Club Race, at Second Creek Raceway in 1992. Since then we have hosted twenty Club Races, and along the way we have incorporated the Advanced Solo DE groups into the race weekend’s schedule. This was the 14th Club Race event that I have chaired or co-chaired over the years, and my last. Some might say, “Oh sure, you will be back next year,” but this time I deserve a rest and Walt agrees! So Brian Leary will be taking on this responsibility for the 2013 Club Race and Solo DE. Brian will need the entire support that you have all shown to me over the many years. He will bring the race to the next level and have fun doing it with all of us helping him. It takes many regional members to volunteer to produce an event of this magnitude. Co-chairs Vicki Earnshaw, Brian and I would like to thank all the committee chairs and their extended committee members for the time and effort extended for its success. Our sponsors outdid themselves this year in their support and we want to express our sincere gratitude. Our thanks go out to “Title Race Sponsors” once again for this year’s race: PCNA and Prestige Imports (Justin Adis and Dean Blackwelder, GM), along with Race Gold Sponsor GBOX of Boulder (Stan Richardson). Silver Sponsors were 3R Racing/Auto (Bob and Holly Raub) and Pendleton Friedberg Wilson & Hennessey P.C. (Cecil Morris). Bronze Sponsors were Poudre Sports Car (Steven and Zack Schroeder), Eurosport Ltd. (Greg Johnson), and Benjamin West (Alan Benjamin) and Carquip of Boulder (Tom Conway). Race Sponsors were Hanksville Hotrods (Hank Padilla), Invoice Bankers (Greg Curtiss), RG and Associates, LLC (Rick Gonçalves), Ray Newman, Walt and Kathy Fricke, and Adele Arakawa & Barry Tiller. I want to thank all of you for your kind support over the years during my stint as your Club Racing Chair and will now concentrate on getting back to my first love, Club Racing itself. Walt just bought me a new Hans device, so it’s off to the track for me once again! Warm regards to all! Kathy Fricke

Out front at the start of the race are: #08 Alex Walsh, behind him are #124 Michael McGrath, #25 Tommy Dean and #1 Robert Prilika - all RMR racers.

With all this GTA Cup Car action at the front it might have been easy to overlook the efforts of another Alex (of the female persuasion), Alexandra Sabados, running in GT4R, never put a wheel wrong all weekend and over the course of the two-day event lowered the class record held by Greg Curtiss to a sterling 1:56.283! More local dominance was evident in GT4S as Mike Hemingway and Bruce McGrath each took a win. Sunday’s second sprint race was almost a repeat of race one’s domination by the other Alex but he and Prilika had to settle for second and third, losing out to a determined effort by Klaus Viljanmaa, the “Finnish Spinner,” who

Houston’s Neils Meissner finished second in both races by a combined total of less than five seconds. His dad Siggi also made his Club Race debut this weekend and found plenty of people to race with. Texan Thomas Jones kicked our butts in Spec Boxster and also took more than a half-second out of the lap record for the class. I enjoyed my time in my new-to-me SPB car and can’t wait for the Hallett Club Race where we’ll have our own run group with 20+ entries. Walt Fricke made a surprising appearance in D class and whipped up on the field taking wins in all three races. Taking 2nd Place in both Sprint races was Dick Scariano, another RMR racer from the West slope. Jim Widrig and Rick Gonçalves swept up the crumbs taking all but one of the remaining podium spots in the class for the weekend. Some of the best racing was in the SP1 class for 944 normally-aspirated cars, a true “driver’s class.” Momentum cars to the max, these buzzing bees race harder than any

also salvaged his otherwise dodgy weekend by lowering the outright Best-Ever Porsche Lap Record to a stunning 1:46.594, which he accomplished during Saturday’s 60-minute Enduro. Klaus, as many of you know, drives a 4.0-liter GTA2 Hybrid-Tribute car which he debuted last summer at the Hastings race. Driving arguably the most potent package in Club Racing, Klaus truly drives this beast like he stole it and is given to titanic 4-wheels-off excursions and spins. Just this side of being a menace, he is fun to watch and has the talent to become a pro if he can dial it back a notch or two. He has the time and the means to do it too—he would put in back to back to back Club Race weekends: High Plains followed by Mid-Ohio followed by Road America. Can’t argue with his level of commitment! The Stock Class Group featured a good showing from Chad Cox in E class, who won Sprint One and took a credible third to KC’s Richard Bennett in race two. This after completely botching both starts and making things very interesting for the rest of us. continues...

Alex Walsh (below) in the #08 car has the temperature on his tires taken, Niels Meissner (right) in the #06 tries to keep ahead of his competition,

RMR’s Tommy Dean lays down a nice lap in the #25.

others on the track. Dale Tuety had a splendid time gaining a win, a second, and a third. Vicki Earnshaw made her return to Club Racing and stuck her rented “Pink Pig” car on the third step of the podium in Sprint One, beating many seasoned racers in the process including her boyfriend Ray Newman. Probably the most laughable moment of the entire weekend came in Saturday’s third practice—the vaunted session that grids the racers for the 60-minute Enduro and also for qualifying. This is the one for which you put your game face on and really go for a good lap. Problem was as were getting ready to go out it started to rain—first a few drops, then a full-on

shower. Many of us were caught out and did not fit rain tires. Dan Mayer did—well, sorta—he put Dan Carlson’s 944 street tires on his SP2 car and put up the 6th best overall time! Others on dry tires went way, way off track as they grabbed great gobs of understeer AND oversteer while hydroplaning their way around. It would all be for naught, however, as ultimately the National Steward, Bruce Boeder, elected not to use this session for gridding the Enduro—a choice that elicited both groans of discontent and sighs of relief from the racers. Thanks to all of our sponsors. We cannot put this race on without your help! I especially want to thank all of you who volunteered to help put on this event. Run in concert with the Super DE, this is no small effort and truly requires more planning and coordination than any other single thing we do save putting on the Porsche Parade. We all owe a great debt of gratitude to Kathy Fricke, Vicki Earnshaw, and Brian Leary. Kathy has announced that this will be her last time chairing the club race so give her a couple of weeks to recover and start working on her to do it “one last time.” Thanks, Kathy!

It’s hard to believe it with temperatures hovering in the 90s day in and day out, but fall is fast approaching. This year we’ll be celebrating the change of seasons with the changing of tires, the falling of leaves with falling lap times, and the end of the DE season with a traditional German celebration – OktoberFAST. Don’t despair when Autumn is in the air – it’s your chance to head out to High Plains Raceway for the last DE of 2012. Join other PCA members for all things German – fast cars, no speed limits, the oom-pah-pah of Bavarian music and Beer Thirty. Make sure you mark October 13 and 14th on your calendars and get your registration in today! OktoberFAST is a No Times DE with paid corner workers which means lots of track time. It’s the proper way to celebrate fall and give your Porsche one last hurrah before winter. OktoberFAST will be the time you’ll fondly remember when the snow is on the ground, the Porsche is tucked snugly in the garage, and cabin fever is setting in. Registration for the event will be closing September 29th, so register early to make sure you receive an OktoberFAST shirt with a custom Dave Schmidt design in your size. You won’t be able to get these anywhere else, so don’t miss your chance by waiting too long to sign up. Registration is through www.pcarockymtn.motorsportreg.com, and the registrars for the event are EJ Bennett and Penny Jenkins. It is only $250 to drive both days, or $175 for a single day (either Saturday or Sunday). Add a second driver for both days for only $225 or a single day for $150. Tell your family and friends – they don’t even have to drive a Porsche to join us for this fun event. Get your registration in now and watch your email and check the RMR website for the pre-tech inspection dates and locations. The RMR website is http://rmr.pca.org, and you can find OktoberFAST information under the “RMR Upcoming Event Schedule” on the homepage or by clicking on the “Events” tab. You can also visit the HPR web at www.highplainsraceway.com to get more information about the track and facilities, or check out some of the on-track videos posted on YouTube to get ready. By Allison Radcliffe Okay, I’ll admit it – I‘ll never turn a diamond away. However, my 1984 Carrera Cabriolet in Slate Blue Metallic (L661) makes my heart pitter patter more than any sparkly stone. My obsession with 1980s-era 911s began in high school, freshman year to be precise. I was the girl with a picture of a red 1984 930 S Turbo taped inside my locker while other lockers displayed photos of Rob Lowe from St. Elmo’s Fire. Thank goodness I was still able to get a few dates. Anyone who has known me since then has come to know that my 911 obsession is very real. By age five, both of my children could spot their Mom’s favorite car by make, year and model number. So when my husband surprised me with Lola (her name) for our 20th wedding anniversary, he scored some points, to put it mildly. He had always told me (or maybe it was me who always told him) that he was lucky my dream car was a 1980s 911 rather than a modern day sports car. Much more realistic, financially speaking. With only 44,000 original miles, a pristine black rag top and hardly a scratch on her, she is magnificent. Her quirky analog gauges and manual antenna bring a smile to my face on the dreariest of days. And the rich, tangy smell of her German leather places me squarely in the tiny back seat of my dad’s yellow 1974 Mercedes 450SL Roadster when I was little. Oh how I loved to smell that car’s leather. Clearly, my car obsession was inherited. The 911’s pure, rounded lines and iconic headlights have

always made my heart skip a beat. But who would have ever thought that her stiff manual steering and demanding manual shift would make me giddy with delight? Needless to say, I look forward to afternoons when Lola takes me to a place where no other concerns exist. Her transmission simply won’t allow my mind to be anything but fully engaged. I’ll take the sparkle from Lola’s metallic paint over the flash of a diamond any day. Lola is this girl’s best friend.

in the zone Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative

Ahhhhhhh (with a sigh of relief....). This last month has been a relatively quiet one for me in my Zone 9 travels. Still, that’s

not to say that I haven’t been busy, just a much easier time than I described in my previous column. After Parade in Salt Lake City, I was able to catch some down-time, take a breather, and get caught up on rest and some odds and ends at home.

But then it was back on the road to another of my favorite events of the year, the Rocky Mountain Region’s Club Race and Solo DE at High Plains Raceway. Having lived in Colorado for thirty years before moving to New Mexico nine years ago, I can say with a great sense of nostalgia that I do miss Colorado. There’s just something about the air and energy that found its way into my soul. So I always enjoy coming “home.”

The annual RMR High Plains Thunder event is not just great because it’s in Colorado, or because it’s put on by RMR’s finely tuned staff led by Kathy Fricke and co-chaired by PCA Club Racing Head Steward Vicki Earnshaw and chair-trainee Brian Leary. It’s always a pleasure to be around both the hosting staff and all the Club Racing and DE drivers, who show such a great spirit of camaraderie both on and off the track.

Besides my usual Zone Rep duties, this year I also served as pace car communications liaison between Race Control and the pace car driver. Our pace car was a beautiful, brand-new 981 Boxster S. Wow, what a great car! A definitive step ahead of all the recent Boxster models. This one had the PDK and all the other cool Porsche engine and chassis tuning stuff. Of course it was also

fun to be riding around the serpentine High Plains circuit with all the race cars zig-zagging in the mirrors warming up their tires and brakes, too.

This year, I saw one of my first PCA friends at the event. Early on in my PCA membership, I volunteered to be the Roadrunner Region newsletter editor. One of my very first issues included an article about (then) Los Alamos resident Bob Patterson, who was just finishing a 2-year project of rebuilding his race car from the ground up. I had heard all the stories and visited the garage where he was doing the work, and then I was lucky enough to go on some of his very first shake-down runs as a passenger. I took photos, interviewed Bob, and wrote a feature story. Then, the following year, Bob was kind enough to write a year-long, monthly column on his build process. (To see all of these articles, visit http://visionsofpower.com/pdfs/Bob_Patterson_article_sm.pdf ). Of course, building the race car was only part of the adventure, and Bob went through all kinds of travails for several years after getting it all dialed in. But this year at HPR, it was working perfectly (as far as I could tell) and he won his class in each of the races. Since I last saw him, he’s moved to Colorado, so it was great to spend some time together again and see that all his work had come to fruition.

I also had the opportunity to meet and

spend time with some of the racing Fritze family. Kim Fritze is the Zone 10 rep, hailing from Minneapolis. Her husband Keith is a Club Racer, and Keith’s brother Alan is a long-time Club Racer from Colorado. It turned out that we had haunted some of the same places and knew several of the same people. It’s always fun to see the world become a little smaller.

The very next weekend was closer to home, with a visit to the 42nd Annual Corrales Roundup, just on the outskirts of Albuquerque. PCAers Dave and Ann Stinchcomb have been hosting this event at their beautiful home in the Rio Grande bosque for all these years, and this edition was one of the best, with a so many Porsches the front yard was full and they had to park several of the cars out back. Each year there is a “featured car,” and this year it was the Boxster. So all the Boxsters were parked in the first couple rows and we did a special group photo with all the owners. A good time was had by all.

I have a little more time off from PCA stuff before heading out to my next event. In the meantime, there is a different kind of action happening in Zone 9. At the end of the year my term will come to an end and you will have a new Zone 9 Rep. Right now we have two very strong candidates who are vying for the job: Joe Warren of Rocky Mountain Region and Liz Shaw of

the Roadrunner Region. Both have been very engaged in PCA activities at the Regional, Zone, and National levels. If you meet either of them at an event, listen to what they have to say and feel free to ask questions. Your Regions’ presidents will be making their recommendations to the PCA Executive Committee in the next couple months...And come January, someone besides me will be writing this column. Stay tuned....

OLDER PORSCHE BRAKES FOR THE TRACKby Walt Fricke

One of the many good things about Porsche is that they have always paid close attention to the braking power of their cars. As the cars got faster, the brakes kept up with them. For street driving one needs nothing more than stock parts and fluids. If you overheat Porsche brakes on the highway you are driving like an idiot and are a menace to society and deserve to run off a cliff on a mountain road as long as you are alone. But when we take our cars onto a race track for Driver Education or racing, it is a different story. Pure beginners who are learning the ropes are usually OK with stock components, but when you pick up the pace the brakes need some help dealing with the increased thermal loads the constant heavy deceleration from high speeds creates. Like any material, brake fluid has a boiling point. When that is exceeded, it vaporizes, and it changes from a largely incompressible liquid to a compressible gas. The part still a liquid is pushed back into the brake fluid reservoir as you accelerate, so when next you step on the brakes the gaseous part has to compress back to its liquid volume before much happens at the brakes. Pumping the pedal rapidly and vigorously (aided by adrenaline) after it has hit the floor helps, but is not a good solution in the longer term. Therefore, the first step, and the simplest, is better brake fluid. When you get to the point where your brake pedal starts to get mushy and doesn’t fully engage

until you push it lower than you used to have to, you need a higher temperature brake fluid. ATE Blue/Gold is just fine for the street, but for the track you will eventually need one of the fluids with a dry boiling temperature of 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Castrol SRF and Motul are two of these, and there are a number of others. The Castrol is especially good in a street car driven in all kinds of weather, because its wet boiling temperature is over 500 degrees F. Lately, there is available a brake fluid called Prospeed RS683, the 683 being its dry boiling temperature, so it leads that pack. I’ve taken to using it, in part because it comes in half liter bottles, while the Castrol (costing about the same ounce for ounce) comes in a liter bottle, which is good if you use it on two cars at once, but otherwise means you have a half opened bottle sitting on a shelf busily trying to absorb moisture despite the cap being tightly on. For some of the later (say 1990 on) Porsches, this may be about all you need. Many models now have built-in air deflectors to get cooling air to the brake rotors. For the 3.2 911s and earlier, if not some other models, the next improvement is to remove the dust shields behind the front and rear rotors. Their function is to keep brake dust from getting on the wheel rims, but they help keep heat in the rotors, so you don’t want them. It can be a bit of a project to get some of these off, but you want to do that for a track car. But check around if you have a later car to be sure they don’t serve as air guides. Drivers have all sorts of preferences for pad manufacturer and materials, but generally these affect braking preferences, where the

pad’s friction coefficient might start to drop off with heat, and other

factors. In terms of not losing your brakes

on the track, I don’t think this is especially important as far as boiling the brake fluid

is concerned. But as your track

skills improve (or if

you are harder on the brakes than you need to be while sorting all this out), and you start to have some mushiness again, the next thing to do is to get more cooling air to the rotors. Our cars have vented rotors, so you want to direct cooling air to the center of the rotor, so it can flow out through the internal vents to the circumference. This requires a plate inside the rotor to block holes in the hub and keep the air going to the vanes, a backing plate to hold a hose end directing air to the central area and blocking off external openings, a hose to convey the air from somewhere, and a scoop or opening to pick up that air. You can buy a scoop system which mounts under the suspension A-arm, or you can make holes in the front valance (eventually buying an aftermarket valance with brake duct holes already in it). This makes a huge difference, and is de rigeur for racing. But you now have sticky track tires and are dicing with the big boys, and your wife is doing the same in the following run group, and now you are getting a soft pedal again. What to do now? Well, there are at least two more things you can do. One is to purchase or fabricate thin backing plates for the front calipers, which get the most heat. These are the same shape as a brake pad, but much thinner. After you wear a pad a little, you slip these in between the piston and the pad. Four of them are in the picture. They act as insulators, especially because the interface with the pad backing plate itself slows heat transfer from the hot pad to the fluid in the caliper. Mine are made of titanium (weren’t as expensive as that material’s name might suggest), but if you can figure out how to cut stainless steel, its thermal properties are almost as good. The other trick is to replace the stock caliper pistons all the way around with ones made of stainless steel. Again, this slows the flow of heat into the brake fluid. Doing all these things allows, for example, a stock 911 SC to be raced full tilt on the track all weekend at the head of its class with no pedal issues. The stock brake calipers are hardly impressive to look at, but can do the job just fine.

What’s in a name?

So I was meeting with a lawyer, and we got onto the subject

of luxury goods and, out of the blue, he blurted out, “Taj Hayaaa?”

I said, “What?”So he repeated it, again, “Taj Hayaaa?”This time, I said, “What are you talking

about?”And, with that, he pointed to my wrist

and said, “Your watch, your watch!”“Oh,” I said, “TAG Heuer. It’s a TAG Heuer.

TAG, like tag you’re it. Technique d’Avant Garde. A company run by Mansour Ojjeh, who is also a large investor in McLaren International, although he sold the watch business to LVMH in 1999.

“And Heuer is for Jack Heuer, who ran the eponymous family-owned watch company for many years, and pretty much invented the chronograph, until he sold the company to TAG in 1985.”

“I see,” he said. “You know a lot more about this than I do.”

I laughed. Because I really don’t. I just knew the derivation of my watch. When it comes to the correct pronunciation of all sorts of things automotive, I’m as lost as my legal friend.

Take anything German.I don’t speak the language. So any

terminology is totally lost on me. I know the world is divided three ways in German,

male, female and neuter. But I’ll be damned if I know which one a car is. And English translations are no help.

Unless we read Shakespeare. Because then we know that Porsche is pronounced like the heroine in The Merchant of Venice, Portia.

But… the clouds can still thicken. Many times I’ve heard the French pronounce our favorite marque, without the “ah” at the end. And, if you know something about French pronunciation, you know that’s not necessarily incorrect… at least in France.

What, then, about Ruf? Alois Ruf? For an answer, I’ll throw this out. I read somewhere that the pronunciation might seem like a dog bark, but it’s not. Rather, it’s like the top of your house… at least in German.

Then there’s the tag line Volkswagen uses in its commercials, “das Auto.” Is that, like, really a German term? Or something the ad agency for VW dreamed up, after too many “biers” in Wolfsburg? I haven’t a clue. But I do think they should be careful, or they’ll follow the fate of Renault’s “Le Car.”

It’s no better in Italian. I once tried to impress some Italians,

when a Ferrari drove by, by saying “Che bella machina,” literally. They politely corrected me with, “Deeka, eet ees ‘Kay bella makkina.’”

I need to find them again. It took me years to master KOON-tash, and now I keep grappling with Lamborghini’s latest

i get around Dick Badler

supercar, the Aventador. In the May 2012 issue of Road & Track, they test the land-based stealth fighter, and they parse the name this way: ah-ven-tah-door.

That’s fine, but where’s the accent? There has to be an accent, right? Something you time to coincide with a tossing of one’s arm, in one big gesticulation. To me, it could fall on the second, third or fourth syllable… and still sound like you’re throwing coins in the Trevi Fountain.

The Asians seem good at anglicizing, in order to make it easier for us poor, myopic Americans. For example, I know the camera is pronounced NEE-kon in Japan. And the car is a HUN-diii in Korea.

But then they have lapses in judgment. How else do you explain the Suzuki Kizashi? It sounds like an alternative to the tempura plate, sushi on the side.

At least we don’t have to deal with, this side of the pond, some of the more esoteric nomenclature of our European cousins, cars like the Donkevoort, the Koenigsegg and the Renault Megane.

I did, however, recently have a mystery solved. I was pondering what could possibly be the pronunciation for Horatio Pagani’s latest creation, the Huayra, when I came across the answer. Dan Neil actually reviewed the car in his August 11, 2012 column in The Wall Street Journal, on Italian turf, by the way, so he has to be right. He parsed the name this way, WAY-ra.

Thank you, Dan. I wouldn’t have known.

what we doWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by particip ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities to enjoy and learn about your Porsche.

Driving Events

Non-Driving Events

TourA tour is a non-competitive driving event in which

participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR typically offers several. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.Rally

A rally is a competitive event in which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.Autocross (AX)

An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals—typically only one or two cars are on the course at any time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross

events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.Driver Education (DE)

A driver education event provides a safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement, for bragging rights, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.Club Race

A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races. As a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, a club race is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each year at High Plains Raceway which, combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

Membership Social Membership socials provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst. RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch High Gear and the RMR Web site for details. And if you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Program Committee Chair or a Board member!Tech Session A tech session is just what it sounds like—a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced

Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear. RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.Concours d’Elegance A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete. RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.
