ENGLISH as an ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE OR DIALECT recognised by SCSA for being in
Year 12 resultsBy Mathew Burt I PrincipalWe are very proud of the performance of our 2018 Year 12 cohort. They worked extremely hard to achieve great success and lived up to expectations of 'being the best they can be’. The entire Year 12 cohort fell within the expected performance band with 14% students achieving 90+ ATAR, an improvement from 2017 when we had 12% of the cohort achieve a 90+ ATAR.Once again we have had subjects that have outperformed expectations. In 2018 these were Math Methods and Physical Education Studies. The standout was English as an Additional Language or Dialect which was recognised by the Schools Curriculum Authority for being in the top 15% of all schools in the state. Our most rewarding achievement for our 2018 cohort has come in our Literacy and Numeracy improvement which is measured from Year 9 NAPLAN to Year 12 attainment. Many thanks to the
dedication of our staff we have the highest increase in Literacy and Numeracy performance for a high school in the state. An increase in achievement of 62.79% in Numeracy, compared with only 38.4% state average. An increase of 68.6% for Reading from Year 9 to Year 12, compared with 43.4% state average, and a huge increase of 75.58% for Writing from Year 9 to Year 12, compared with 52.12% state average. I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate our top performers for 2018:Jordan Bacon ATAR Dux – 97.9 and Ramida Phensuk VET DuxI would also like to publicly acknowledge the staff and students at Broome Senior High School and the Broome Cluster of schools for their hard work and dedication to building a strong culture of success. Success in Year 12 begins with a strong foundation in the early years. The community support for public education in Broome continues to grow with every success, and which reflects with a record enrolment in 2019. We cater for the community and offer a broad curriculum, both ATAR and VET, with quality face-to-face teaching. With a strong school we build a strong community.

TERM 1 REMINDERS
Mathew Burt I PrincipalNaji Gurrijin,Welcome back to all our wonderful Broome families and a very warm welcome to the families joining us for their first year at Broome Senior High School.I am pleased to say that we have had a smooth start to 2019 and avoided the weather that caused interruptions to the start of 2018 so far. Our Year 7 cohort have transitioned very well, many thanks to the combined efforts of our cluster primary schools and our student services team. I am very pleased to say our Year 7 cohort is officially our biggest ever, and I would like to thank the community and their belief in a quality public education with over 190 Year 7 enrolments. Numbers like this allow us to continue to offer a broad curriculum, targeted intervention programs and quality face to face teaching from Year 7 through to Year 12.I have spoken to the students in the first two weeks about success, in particular their individual success. I have encouraged them to set goals and reflect on their performance each and every day.My message to students and staff is no different to previous years. It is about being the best you can be, every single day. In order to be the best you can be I have asked students to identify and reflect on your strengths and weaknesses each and every day by asking these three questions.1. What did I do well today?2. What do I need to improve on today?3. What will I do tomorrow to build on 1 and 2 (my strengths and
weaknesses)?I encourage parents and caregivers to help our students set goals and reflect in order to be the best that they can be.I look forward to meeting with you all throughout 2019 and welcome discussion about your child's education.

OLNA TestingBy Cath Winfield I Deputy Principal
Since 2016, all students in Western Australia have been required to demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy by the end of their secondary schooling in order to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Students are able to prequalify for OLNA if they achieve Band 8 or higher in Year 9 NAPLAN Reading, Writing and Numeracy tests.Students in Years 10 – 12 who have not prequalified through NAPLAN are given two opportunities to achieve literacy and numeracy standards each year, through sitting OLNA tests at Broome Senior High School. The OLNA testing dates for 2019 are: Round 1: March 5-29Round 2: September 2-27The OLNA has three components – Reading, Writing and Numeracy. The Reading and Numeracy components comprise of multiple-choice questions; the Writing component is an extended response of up to 600 words. Students are allowed 50 minutes for the Reading and Numeracy components and 60 minutes for Writing. To prepare our students for the sorts of questions they can expect, and to familiarise them with the online assessment software, we provide access to practice and example tests on a secure website. The link to the secure website for practice and example tests is available on the SCSA (Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority) website at www.scsa.wa.edu.au under Senior Secondary > Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment.
Students, parents and carersIn preparation for OLNA, students are encouraged to access these practice tests from home and are also advised to develop or practice their touch typing skills prior to the writing test. For students with a disability, we have guidelines to help set the appropriate adjustments for equal access. Please contact the school if you require further information on these adjustments.OLNA practice sessionsTeaching staff from Broome Senior High School are available to support students practice for OLNA tests in room E4 on Mondays of weeks 3 and 4 of Term 1. These sessions will also run in Term 3.If you wish to find out more about these tests or which test your child is required to sit, please contact Cath Winfield (Deputy Principal) at Broome Senior High School on 9195 3100 or via email at [email protected] or your child’s Year Leader.
NEW FAMILIES BBQWEDNESDAY
27 FEBRUARY, FROM 4.30PM
All year 7 parents and new families to our school are invited to our Meet and Greet evening at the front of the school (near Student Services) under the Mango Tree.
This is a great opportunity for families to come to Broome Senior High School and have your child/children introduce you to their class teachers, meet other parents, see your child’s classrooms and the fabulous facilities on offer at the school, and enjoy a sausage sizzle.
Teachers will be available between 4.30pm and 6pm. Please pop in when you can to say hello. Tours of the school will leave from under the Mango Tree at regular intervals. We would love to see as many parents and families as possible and look forward to meeting you.

Coral Bay memories 2018By Anthony Maher I Coral Bay Camp Co-ordinator (2018)The annual Year 9 Coral Bay camp was held late last year and involved 78 fabulous Year 9 students and eight teachers. We enjoyed four action-filled days which included snorkelling the iconic Ningaloo Reef, Aqua Rush speed boat rides, manta ray chasing, glass bottom boating, sand boarding and underwater scootering around the bay. Most rewarding however, was watching the students and teachers bond over card games and sporting challenges, sharing
bakery treats and creating performances all without technology in our limited ‘chill’ time. This was certainly a camp that will be remembered for a long time.

By Neda Loh I Year 7 Coordinator
The start of Term 1 has been wonderful, with over 180 Year 7 students at Broome Senior High School. It has been delightful to see all the students excited about attending school, displaying energy and enthusiasm in their classes and establishing new friendships. In Week 2, we held a Year 7 Induction morning where students participated in activities around the school in their faction groups. The students rotated through four sessions; team building, learning about expectations and wellbeing at Broome Senior High School, an introduction to Headspace and a time capsule activity where students completed a profile about themselves. This profile will be returned to the students at their Year 12 graduation to reflect on the changes they have made during their time here at school. Our Year 7s are transitioning well into their first two weeks of high school. A reminder to parents and caregivers that if you have any concerns and/or queries please contact me on: [email protected] I am thrilled about the year ahead and am looking forward to getting to know you and the outstanding Year 7 cohort.
New year 7s are excited and enthusiastic for year ahead

An inspiring talk sends student on exchange to BrazilJacinta Bayliss I English teacherWe are extremely proud of one of our Year 12 students who has received a scholarship with the AFS Intercultural Education Organisation to complete her last year of schooling in Brazil.Navarny Dann was inspired to become an exchange student, when listening to a talk Ningali Lawford-Wolf was giving about her own exchange to Alaska when she was in high school. She applied very late last year and found out via email, just a few days before Christmas that she had been accepted. Navarny’s first choice was Canada, but she was told she had to be fluent in French to attend school there. She was given a choice of a few small European countries and Brazil. She did some research and the festive and loud culture that is Brazil spoke to her.She is very excited to be going and can’t wait to make some awesome memories. We wish her all the very best.
