Allah Almighty says in Surah Toubah, ver se 36: ?Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar ] months in the Register of Allah [fr om] the day He cr eated the heavens and the ear th; of these, four ar e sacr ed. That is the cor r ect r eligion, so do not wr ong your selves dur ing them.?

Anas ibn Maalik (May the peace of Al lah be upon him) said: When Rajab began, the Messenger of Al lah (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: ?O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha?baan, and let us r each Ramadan.?

The word barakah in the Arabic language means grow th, increase, continui ty and something that r emains. A Muslim is encouraged to attain barakah in ever y aspect of his l i fe and takes advantage of ever y oppor tuni ty to attain barakah. The month of Ramadaan is a month ful l of barakah. I t is for this r eason i t is r efer r ed to as a blessed month (Shahrun Mubarak) and the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) advised us to take suhur before star ting to fast when he said: "Eat Suhur (pr edawn meal). Sur ely, ther e is a blessing in

Suhur."

When barakah comes into one?s l i fe, whether in one?s l i fespan, time, wealth, house, spouse, work, know ledge, or any aspect of your l i fe, then one has an abundance of good and great benefi t.

When one looks at two things, one w ith barakah and the other w ithout, the di f ference is that of the heavens and ear th.

Have you not exper ienced something which you purchased to fulf i l a need in l i fe and Allah Almighty put barakah in i t and ever yone around you benefi ts from i t and i t?s l i fespan is increased (i t doesn?t break); Then you purchase the same thing perhaps at the same time, but Al lah does not put any barakah in i t, nobody benefi ts from i t, i t does not last (breaks easi ly); The exact same commodity but one has barakah and the other is void of barakah for r easons we w i l l mention shor tly.

Barakah enter s the l i fe of a per son and makes his l i fespan as i f he has l i fespans (he l ives l ike to the age of other s e.g., he l ives for 60 years but i t is as i f he l ives for 600 years. This is barakah in time.

All praises are due t o Allah, t he

Cher isher and Sustainer of t he

universe. Peace and salutat ions

upon t he Prophet Muhammad, his

family, his companions and all

t hose who follow him.

The month of Rajab is a sacred

month in which bad deeds

commit t ed in t his month is graver

t han other months and good deeds

are mult ipl ied. I t is an indicat ion

t hat t he month of Ramadaan is

close and t hat we should prepare

ourselves t o receive t his month.

BARAKAH IN OUR LIVES

FROM THE MIMBAR TO YOUR HOME...

By Sheik Ebrahiem Tofa

Page 4: Edit or ial

You have a speci f ic time in this l i fe and others around you have the same time, but you can produce double the work than them because Allah Almighty had put barakah in your time and not in their time.

How many people earn so much money but when i t comes to the f i r st week after pay day, they are bor row ing from those who earn less than them, or their parents who are pensioners.

It is not the numbers that are impor tant but what is impor tant is to get barakah in our l ives so that i t can have a great impact and benefi t to other s.

If we look at the l ives of Sayidina Abubakr and Sayidina Umar bin Abdul Aziz in their cal iphate per iod, which was just over 2 years but what they had achieved one would imagine i t to be 20 years.

Allah gives you a single chi ld, but he does the ser vice of 100 chi ldren on the other hand Allah gives you 10 chi ldren but not one of them does anything that you can be proud of as a parent. They cannot even spend time w ith you.

What is the secret in having a successful l i fe? i t is indeed found in barakah. When barakah comes from Allah there are no l imitations.

How are we able to attain this barakah so we can solve our si tuation in our homes and l ives?

1 - When we inculcate Taqwa in our l ives then Allah w i l l grant us barakah. Al lah Almighty says in Surah Al a?raf, ver se 96: ?And i f only the people of the ci ties had believed and feared Allah, we would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the ear th; but they denied so We seized them for what they were earning?.

2- When we continuously show ing grati tude for al l the bounties.

When you consume the r izq of Al lah ? thank Allah.

When you dr ive your vehicle ? thank Allah.

When you dress yourself ? thank Allah.

When you enter your home ? thank Allah.

When you see your chi ldren ? thank Allah.

When you remember your parents ? thank Allah.

When you pray ? thank Allah.

Allah w i l l put barakah in that which He gave you and He w i l l increase you. Al lah Almighty says in Surah Ebrahim, ver se 7:

?Also call to mind when your Lor d pr oclaimed: "I f you give thanks, I will cer tainly gr ant you mor e; but if you ar e

ungr ateful for My favour s, My chastisement is ter r ible.?

Thanking Allah is with the hear t, tongue, and deed.?

Making fajr in jamaat is thanking Allah.

Ser ving your parents is thanking Allah.

Fasting mon and thur s is thanking Allah.

3- Seeking law ful sustenance.

Hakim ibn Hizam (may Allah be pleased w ith him) r epor ted: I asked the Messenger of Al lah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) for some money and he gave me. Then I asked him again and he gave me. Then I asked him again and he gave me, and then he said: "O Hakim, this money is l ike a sweet fr esh fr ui t; whoever takes i t w i thout greediness, he is blessed in i t, and whoever takes i t w i th greediness, he is not blessed in i t, and he is l ike a person who eats but is never satisf ied. (Bukhar i)

4- Moderation in spending w ithout being wasteful.

Al lah Almighty says in Surah Al a?raf, ver se 31: ?Childr en of Adam, take your ador nment at ever y place of pr ayer . Eat and dr ink, and do not waste. He does not love the wasteful.?

4- Truthfulness

The Prophet said, "The buyer and the seller have the option of canceling or confir ming the bar gain unless they separ ate, and if they spoke the tr uth and made clear the defects of the goods, them they would be blessed in their bar gain, and if they told lies and hid some facts, their bar gain would be depr ived of Allah's blessings." (Bukhar i)

5- Dua and to r eturn to Allah.

We should always invoke Allah Almighty for blessings as taught to us in the qunoot.

O Allah guide me among those You have guided, par don me among those You have par doned, befr iend me among those You have befr iended, bless me in what You have gr anted, and save me fr om the evil that You decr eed. Indeed, You decr ee, and none can pass decr ee, and none can pass decr ee upon You, indeed he is not humiliated whom You have befr iended, blessed ar e You our Lor d and Exalted.'"

We pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the abi l i ty to be able to attain barakah in ever y aspect of our l ives and that we can change the conditions w ithin our mar r iages, homes, fami ly, work and our l i fespan for the better.

And Allah knows Best.

QMM News l et t er - Mont hl y Commi t t e Repor t ? Febr uar y 2021 / Raj ab 1442 AH

Just as we entered the new month of February 2021, the nation was addressed by our President, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday, the 1st at 20H00 and Alhamduliellah, many of the amended lockdown restrictions, promulgated due to the 2nd wave surge in Covid19 infections, were relaxed. This meant that masjids could once

again open for religious services, albeit with a maximum of 50 mussallees inside a closed area and up to 100 outside. The amended athaan once again reverted back to its standard format when ? ?As Salaatu Alaa Fie Buyutikum? fell away and hopefully, never to be heard in the near future again, In-Sha-Allah.

The MJC and ICONS immediately met and advised the community to remain vigilant while recommending that all masjids could re-open, but that the administrators should ensure that all the legislated Covid19 protocols are adhered to. Those

masjids where the protocols

were not able to be implemented, were advised to remain closed until they could conform to it. Alhamduliellah, after our committee met, consensus was reached to open for all awqaats and Jumuah proceedings as from 4th and 5th February 2021, respectively. Even though we officially opened up for jumuah proceedings on 12th February 2021, we had quite a few mussallees who turned up on Friday, 5th

February 2021 and Alhamduliellah we could cater for the prescribed 50 mussallees for jumuah inside the masjid.

While the masjid was closed to the general public, Hadji Naaym installed some shade cloth over the adjacent outside area in the back of the masjid and we proceeded with the removal of the back dividing wall which increased the inside prayer footprint. The air-conditioning units that were donated were installed and for it to be functional, we will have to do some upgrades to our electrical supply system.

Seeing that the Covid19 protocols for religious gatherings allows for more congregants outside the premises, we will look at erecting our stretch tents while making it sturdier, to cater for the windy conditions. We are also looking at covering more of the outside areas with shade cloth to make it more bearable for mussallees who perform their prayers outside, In-Sha-Allah.

Alhamduliellah when we

re-opened the masjid for 2021, we removed the black plastic covering from the carpets which made conditions much more bearable. This however meant that the carpet needed to be sanitised more often. With sanitisation we had to factor in the drying time of the carpets, which became a bit of a challenge. The other alternative was to use fogging which was a much better solution, but it came at an increased cost. Alhamduliellah, after doing

some research and shopping, we managed to purchase an Atomizer Fogging Machine which we are able to use on a daily basis and in so doing we will be keeping the masjid germ and virus free In-Sha-Allah. We also had stands made for our laser thermometers which makes it easier to record one?s temperature. We would also like to thank one of our mussallees who installed the artificial grass on the paved area as we enter the masjid. Alhamduliellah this

enhanced the entrance to the masjid and also made the ground more conducive to performing jumuah salaah outside the masjid.

We have commenced with the remodelling of the women?s section, especially since their wudu and toilet facilities during jumuah were always a bit of a challenge. We are hoping to have this in place as soon as all Covid19 protocols are lifted and when we can frequent the masjid as per the norm, In-Sha-Allah.

February also saw the opening of our madaries which kicked off with orientation meetings between our teaching staff, administrators and our parents. Thereafter the parents were presented with the madrassa timetable and all textbooks. We started off with Zoom and WhatsApp classes but more and more parents wanted us to look at the normal classroom learning experience, especially for the lower grades. After consultation with all stakeholders it was decided to open the madrassa from 22nd February 2021, for Grade 1 and

2?s on a Monday and Wednesday, while the Grade 3 and 4?s will attend on a Tuesday and Thursday. The Saturday madrassa opened from 27th February 2021 for Grade 4 to 7?s Alhamduliellah. We will also be looking at a blended form of instruction with the further investigation of an all-inclusive E-Learning option to embrace the digital revolution In-Sha-Allah.

The Smart Bilal Application was installed whereby anyone with a smart phone can download the application and listen to anything broadcasted via our PA system from anywhere in the world. Initially this system worked fine for a couple of days but it seems that some bugs have crept in and it is currently offline. We have logged all

problems and are waiting for feedback as to when the system will become available again In-Sha-Allah. Once the system is operational and relatively bug-free, we will inform the community on how to download the application and enjoy maximum benefit thereof.

With the increase of our WhatsApp database and the application?s size restrictions, it became more and more cumbersome to send out messages. Our secretariat with the blessings of the Masjid Committee, decided to migrate all our WhatsApp users to Telegram, which is much more user friendly and offers more functionality.

On Saturday, 20th February 2021, our Grade 1 Madrassa teachers, together with the principal and vice principal attended a workshop initiated by ICONS, at Masjid Al Mubaarak in Belhar, to discuss a unified Madrassa Syllabus for the northern suburbs. The noble intention is to have a completely unified syllabus across all grades. It is intended that the implementation would commence with the grade 1?s and thereafter be rolled out to the rest of the grades In-Sha-Allah.

Apart from benefitting the learners who intends to move amongst different madaaries in the northern suburbs, it will also create a common madrassa educational system which all educators in the northern suburbs will be okay with.

Our Archery Club re-commenced with archery practice for males and females from age 7 upwards, under strict Covid19 protocols on Saturday, 29th February 2021, at Fairbairn College from 14h30 to 16H30.

The Masjid ran its first 2021 Pre-Marital Counselling Workshop for prospective marital couples on Saturday, 27th February 2021 from 13H30 to 16H30. Alhamdulillah we had 12 attendees who thoroughly enjoyed this very informative workshop and we are hoping to run a few more during the course of the year In-Sha-Allah.

Our Beitul Maal sub-structure is still very active and with the partnering of the Parow Park Soup Kitchen, they have been seeing to the needs of the most vulnerable in our area. The Goodwood Ratepayers & Residents Association also came on board by contributing financially to our Beitul Maal

where food parcels and food are distributed to the needy in the greater Goodwood area.

Our daily broadcast of the completion of the Holy Quran via Mixlr has been running unabated for almost 1 year. Alhamduliellah, by the end of February 2021, we completed 335 daily community khatams since the national lockdown was announced.

In our quest to become more visible and transparent, we have embarked on an initiative to showcase what the different sub-structures of the Goodwood Islamic Society does and who the contact persons are. Last month we shared the information of the entire Goodwood Islamic Society and this month we want to focus on the Masjid Committee by sharing their photos with the community In-Sha-Allah.

W i l l s a n d E s ta tes Undoubtedly, we are living in trying times

with much uncertainty especially when it

comes to the issue of health and wellness.

One of the effects of the COVID-19

pandemic has been an increased awareness

regarding death, as more and more people

around us succumb to the virus coupled

with the extensive media coverage that goes

with the increased number of deaths.

Of great concern at times like these, should

be the question as to whether our estates

and affairs are in order. We all too often get

caught up in the media hype of what?s going

on around us that we fail to see the lessons

that stare us in the face. The lesson of

course being that regardless of our current

state of health or affairs, we simply do not

know when it will be our turn to ?taste

death? as Allah guarantees us in the holy

Quran (Surah 3 Verse 185).

With all the reminders we receive on a daily

basis, it should be top of our lists to ensure

that in the very least, we have a valid ?Final

Will & Testament? in place.

Here are some practical considerations

regarding your Final Will and Testament:

1. Above everything else, we need to

ensure that our Will is Shariah compliant

(assuming you are a Muslim reading this). It

is not the purpose of this article to expand

on the Shariah aspects of Wills as there is

sufficient material (both audio and written)

on the subject available. Suffice it to say that

we want to ensure that our last potential

act, that being the directions given in

respect of the winding up of our estate,

should be one that pleases Allah (SWT) and

not one that displeases Allah (SWT) by

defying the instructions given in the Quran.

2. Ensure you appoint a competent

person as executor or nominate a

competent firm of attorneys as Agent

capable of ensuring that everything is done

in accordance with Shariah and within the

framework of South African Law.

3. Keep the directions simple as this will

make life much easier for your executor

when winding up your estate.

4. Ensure that your Will is kept in a safe

place and that either your executor has a

copy thereof or your family is aware as to

where it is stored.

5. Keep a record of your Assets,

Liabilit ies, Accounts, Policies etc either in a

physical file or in a digital file that someone

has access to. This makes it much easier for

your executor to ensure that all matters are

dealt with efficiently.

6. Included in the record above, ensure

that loans taken or given, especially to

family members, are recorded in writing to

avoid any ambiguity or doubt after your

death.

The best of course is to not make

assumptions about anything. Rather consult

a competent firm of attorneys regarding the

issue of estate planning to ensure that all

matters of concern to you is dealt with

effectively.

For a simple and quick solution though, you

can find a template for a Shariah compliant

will under the downloads tab on our

website. May Allah make it easy on all of us.

And Allah know best.

Let us always be reminded of the

beautiful and beneficial Hadith

narrated from our beloved

spiritual examplar and leader,

Mohammad, Mustapha, (saws),

servant and final messenger of

Allah, who guided his companions

and family to supplicate when the

month of Rajab entered upon

them;

" O Allah grant us Barakah in the

months of Rajab and Shabaan

and bless us to enter into the

month of Ramadan" (ameen yaa

Rab)

Alhamdulillah through the

blessings and mercy of Allah

Almighty we have now entered

the holy month of Rajab, focusing

on our strategy and commitment

to meeting the blessed and

scared month of Ramadan insha

Allah. May we be blessed with

good health and honor to enter it

with our complete faith and

intentions to attain the best of

rewards for our efforts and

commitment ameen.

ICONS has, as usual committed in

launching special programs in our

efforts toward strengthening and

motivating our membership in

guiding their communities to

successful preparation. A great

blessing was the easing of the

level 3 regulations through which

we were now again able to focus

on our community building

efforts. Our masajid are now once

again open to at least gather for

our weekly jumuah programs,

even though with strict protocols

and regulations in place. We at

least have a platform to

communicate with our jamaa-at,

to guide, motivate and share

essential info towards

establishing stronger

relationships, and encourage

community ties.

Alhamdulillah our on-line

programs have also been

successful and was well

appreciated and benefited by our

communities. We extend our

sincere gratitude to all our

members who had offered their

personal facilit ies and expertise to

make it possible, and may we all

benefit from their unselfish

commitment towards the cause in

reaching the greater communities

of the Western Cape insha allah.

Alhamdulillah we had four

successful on-line Ghatam al

Quran programs, which was our

proposal to keep our

communities connected especially

during the lock down periods. We

received good and positive

feedback from the communities

who tuned in. Our leadership

accepted the proposal to continue

with the initiative and conduct the

program monthly, on the last

Thursday evening of each month.

Our first monthly is scheduled for

25 February 2021 insha Allah.

Imaamat council of t he nor t her n subur bs

All praises are due to Allah Almighty

who honoured us to have entered into

the sacred month of Rajab, the month

which He blessed and made sacred,

and introduced it as a means of

reminding us to seek forgiveness for

our faults, bad habits and sins.

This month of Rajab is then followed

by another blessed and sacred month,

Shahrul Shabaan, the month for the

purification of sins and bad habits.

And these two sacred months are

followed by the best of months, the

holy month of Ramadan, which is

known as the month of the

enlightenment of our hearts.

Alhamdulillah our special group has presented

its first educational workshop program on

Saturday 20 February 2021. The invitation was

extended to all grade 1 madrassah teachers and

educational practitioners who lead and support

learning in the Northern Suburbs. The purpose

and intention of this workshop is to have a

unified madrassah syllabus that can be used for

all madaris in the Northern Suburbs. It would

certainly benefit students who relocate to

another area, who will then have the peace of

mind and comfort to be accommodated at

another madrassah without having to start

over, or follow a different syllabus.

The grade 1 syllabus was presented at the

workshop by Moulana Ilyaas Samaai, who is the

co-ordinator, and he was assisted by his team,

Moulana Marwaan Cassiem who presented the

administration system, and Sheikh Nasser

Barnes who presented the teaching

methodologies. The attendance at the

workshop was excellent and all the attendees

received certification by our Ameer Sheikh

Ebrahim Tofa.

The education task team are focused on the

goal to offer continued workshops and

complete their submission and presentation of

the education syllabus to cover the syllabi

accommodating up to grade 5 by year end 2021

bi-ith nillah.

Another aim and objective of the ICONS exco is

to promote and foster stronger relationships

and interaction between the various

communities of the Northern Suburbs. Focus

was directed at strengthening the bond of

brotherhood amongst the chairpersons of the

masajid as was Alhamdulillah achieved with the

Ulamaa of the masajid of the Northern Suburbs,

through the establishment of ICONS.

Invitations were extended to the respected

individuals, and a zoom meeting is scheduled

for 6 March 2021 insha Allah.

Detailed proposals will be circulated via our

membership to their communities regarding

the way forward towards reaching our main aim

and objective, which is the strengthening and

establishment of the spiritual dimension of our

communities. We are unfortunately restricted

and governed by the current conditions of the

covid epidemic, as it has an impact on the types

of programs and gatherings we present, in

conformance with the regulations and protocols

in place due to the lock down levels. Our

membership have discussed the formats of

upcoming programs of the special nights of

Laytul Miraaj and Laylatul Baraa, as well as the

program format for Ramadan (taraweeh) and

other, but we will make final decisions after

consultations on the directive issued by the MJC

insha Allah.

ICONS herewith also extend their sincere

congratulations (alf Mabrook) to the Durbanville

jamaah for having been successful in being

awarded the grounds for the purpose of

erecting a masjid and Islamic center in the

Durbanville area alhamdulillah. May Allah

Almighty strengthen them in their efforts and

guide and bless them to propagate His Deen

and establish the spirit of Islam amongst the

people of Durbanville insha Allah ameen. We

intend to also present updates of their progress

as well as a profile of their organization in due

course.

Chi r opr act i c is a system of therapy focused on the str ucture of the body, par ticular ly the spine. Chiropractor s manipulate the body's al ignment to r el ieve pain and improve function and to help the body heal i tself .

Whi le the mainstay of chiropractic is spinal manipulation, chiropractic care may also include other tr eatments, including manual or manipulative therapies, postural and exercise education, and ergonomic tr aining (how to walk, si t, and stand to l imit back str ain).

Chiropractic tr eatment may also help people w ith other musculoskeletal r elated pains.

"Spinal manipulation" is a gener ic term used for any kind of therapeutic movement of the spine. Most often i t involves the application of quick but strong pressure on a joint between two ver tebrae of the spine.

In addition to spinal manipulation, a chiropractor may advise you about changing your biomechanics and posture and suggest other tr eatments and techniques. The ultimate goal of chiropractic is to help r el ieve pain and help patients better manage their condition at home.

3 Things to know

1. Chi r opr actor s don?t pr escr ibe m edicat i on

Chiropractor s do not prescr ibe medication and this al lows us to think outside the box. Many people would r ather take a pi l l than change a few l i festyle habits, but I see f inding an alternative approach as a huge posi tive because i t empowers patients to take control of their health.

A chi r opr actor m ay pr escr ibe:

- Soft Tissue therapy using dr y needling or electro-modali ties

- Adjustments

- Joint bracing or taping

- Exercise and str etches

- Ergonomic advice

- Refer ral to other medical exper ts when necessar y

Treatments general ly do not hur t. But soreness simi lar to what you might feel after a workout

is a common side effect and over time your muscles adjust.

2. Chi r opr actor s don?t just t r eat the back and neck

Chiropractor s can offer complementar y care for many common problems:

- Neck/back pain

- Headaches

- Extremity/l imb pain (sprains & str ains)

- Whiplash

- Ar thr i tic conditions

- Spor ts injur ies,

- Muscle conditions (tr igger points)

Chiropractor s tr eat problems in people of al l ages. Depending on the patient, the intensi ty and for ce of tr eatments var y. Al l patients are screened to ensure that they are good candidates for chiropractic care. For example, many older patients have some thinning or softening of the bones that would r ule out joint manipulation.

If chiropractic care is not a sui table option for a patient, we w i l l guide them to the r ight people and resources.

3. Chi r opr actor s focus on pr event ion

The goal of chiropractic care is to r estore your health over the long term, r ather than to r el ieve your symptoms over the shor t term. So a chiropractor w i l l ask how you move throughout the day (standing, si tting, walking) and how you sleep at night.

Learning how to posi tion your body at your desk, when you?re standing and moving, and when you?re in bed ? and incorporating str etches into your dai ly routine ? can be invaluable in preventing future problems.

To sum i t up, understanding what chiropractor s do is pretty simple: think of aches, pains, creaks and str ains. I f you?ve got a problem that involves your musculoskeletal system, a chiropractor can offer alternative methods of tr eatment.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious the Most Merciful. We put salutations on our Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, companions and all those who follow him until the end of time.

Sha'ban is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the month of "separat ion", so called because the pagan Arabs used to disperse in search of water. The fifteenth night of this month is known as the "Night of Records" (Laylah al-Bara'ah). Sha'ban is the last lunar month before Ramadan, and so Muslims determine in it when the first day of Ramadan fasting will be. Sha` ban is like an introduction to Ramadan and it has some things in common with Ramadan, such as fasting, reciting Quran and giving to charity.

During the month of Sha'ban the believers are exposed to the showers of Allah?s mercy and everyone receives their share of it according to their determination. The door is widely open for all forms of good deeds be it fasting, paying charity, reciting the Quran, in remembrance of Allah(dhikr), kindness to parents, helping those in need etc. Abu Dhar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: ?The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ?Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.?? However, fasting was the best of the deeds that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed during this month of Sha'ban. Usamah ibn Zaid narrated, "I said: 'O Messenger of God! I do not see you fast ing any month as much as Sha?ban.' He said: 'That is a month t o which people do not pay much at t ent ion, between Rajab and Ramadan. I t is a month in which t he

deeds are t aken up t o t he Lord of t he wor lds, and I l ike t hat my deeds be t aken up when I am fast ing." ' This Prophetic tradition teaches us the art of presentation.

The Prophet was keen to have his deeds presented before Allah the Almighty in the best possible form, and fasting is a time of high spirituality and purification. This is similar to the beauty and vividness the spring season brings to everything on the face of earth to receive summer. Spring, in both of its meanings, brings infinite goodness to everything and everyone.

Allah Almighty says, "And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so we said, "St r ike wit h your staf f t he stone." And t here gushed for t h f rom it twelve spr ings, and every people knew it s water ing place" (Quran 2: 60). In the above noble verse, Allah the Almighty informs us that a water spring came out from the solid rocks. In a similar manner, the month of Sha'ban is the gift that Allah Almighty grants to His believing servants to bring out the best of them and to wash away their sins before the blessed month of Ramadan.

During the month of Sha'ban, Allah opens the door of repentance to His believing servants, responds to their prayers, and fulfills their needs on the blessed eve of mid-Sha'ban. There are numerous hadiths which strengthen one another and which establish the merit of this night.

(/continued...)

I del iberately used the above three categor ies for a ver y interesting r eason: l inguistical ly al l three have one verb in common, i .e. khamara from which the noun Khamr is der ived. The verb khamara can be used to descr ibe any of the above actions.

Ef fect on the Fam i ly

Famil ies who have not been dir ectly impacted by a member who is an alcoholic or addict of Khamr w i l l never be able to even begin to comprehend the l iving hell such a fami ly exper iences. They are victims of a monster that shows no regard for fami ly values, fami ly r eputation, shame and embar rassment, negative social impact, no r espect for individual fami ly member?s pr ivate belongings and even household necessi ties. The l ist is never -ending.

Ef fect on Society

Drugs alone cost the South Afr ican economy more than R40 bi l l ion in just one year in 2018. The cost of violence cost South Afr ica R145 bi l l ion in 2020 (of which drugs and alcohol abuse are major contr ibutor s). To put i t in per spective, approximately 3.6 mi l l ion low cost houses could have been bui l t w i th that money. Gangster ism and ?tur f wars? turn our areas into war zones. How many innocent l ives have been lost in the process? Once again, the l ist is unending.

From the above, which is a mere gl impse at the evi l of Khamr , we can determine the tr uth of

the words of Rasoolul lah ? when he labelled i t Ummul Khabaa-i th, the mother and source of al l evi l .

Sayyidina Abdur -Rahman bin Al-Har i th Ra said that he heard Sayyidina Uthman bin ` Affan RA saying,

"Avoid Khamr , for it is the mother of all sins. Ther e was a man befor e your time that used to wor ship Allah secluded fr om the people. Later , an evil woman fell in love with him and sent her female ser vant to him saying that they wanted him to come to her to witness something. So he went with the ser vant. When they enter ed the house, she locked the door. Inside was a beautiful woman with a young ser vant boy and some alcohol. She said to him, ` By Allah! I did not invite you to be a witness for anything, but called you to have intimate r elations with me. Kill this boy or dr ink this alcohol.' So she gave him some alcohol, and he kept asking for mor e until he [became intoxicated and] had inter cour se with her and killed the boy. Ther efor e, avoid Khamr , because it is never combined with faith, but one of them is bound to expel the other (fr om the hear t).'' (Al-Bayhaqi).

This r eal istical ly indicates how Khamr leads from one sin to another.

In our next instalment we w i l l look at three generations of Khamr abusers.

What should drive one to become a teacher? Is it the wealth that one can earn from teaching? Is it the status one can achieve by becoming a teacher? What is it that drives one to becoming a teacher?

Teaching, is a noble endeavor that one needs to consider carefully before embarking upon. It needs to be done for the correct reasons or it could become a means of destruction for oneself.

Nabi SAW forewarned us of a time in which ignorant people will be the ones teaching and they will be questioned in various issues and they will answer without knowledge, going astray themselves and leading others astray.

We should endeavor to become teachers, in order to spread knowledge, purely for the pleasure of ALLAH. This is our ultimate objective.

Knowledge has no value if it is kept for oneself. Look at Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 159 to 160:

?Verily, those who conceal that which we have revealed of clear proofs and guidance, after We

have made it clear for the people in the book, they are the ones cursed by ALLAH and cursed by those who curse.?

Even though many mufassirin mention that this Ayah is concerning the Yahud and their

concealing the description of Nabi SAW, Al-Imam Shihab Al-Din Al-Alusi mentions in his famous

Tafsir, Ruh Al-Ma?ani that it has been narrated that this Ayah was revealed concerning any such

person who conceals any law or regulation of Deen.

He then goes on to quote a Hadith, which is narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari that Sayyiduna Abu

Hurairah RA said: ?Was it not for an Ayah in the book of ALLAH, I would not ever have taught

anyone. Then he read this Ayah.?

He then also mentions a Hadith narrated in the Musnad of Abu Ya?la and the Mu?jam (Al-Awsat

and Al-Kabir) of Al-Tabrani from Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn ?Abbas RA who said that Nabi SAW said:

?Whoever is asked some knowledge and he conceals it, will come on the day of judgment

bridled with a bridle of fire.?

Knowledge is meant to be shared. This Din is meant to be shared. The whole world needs to know the teachings of Islam. And it all starts with you.

Some important tips and qualities for a teacher Teaching Qur-an and its sciences is the greatest responsibility, but also comes with the greatest rewards. For a person intending to teach Qur-an and its sciences, a few things should be essential.

Ensure the following are observed:

1. Tot al sincer it y

Nabi SAW taught that actions will be judged according to intentions and rewards will

only be given accordingly.

2. Underst anding t he responsibil i t y and consider ing it an Am anah.

Nabi SAW said that

"the sign of a hypocrite is three: When he speaks, he lies. When he makes a promise, he breaks it. And when he is trusted, he betrays.?

3. Know ing at which age or which level t o t each what t opics and subject s

Al-Imam Al-Bukhari discusses this in his Sahih when he mentions the word ?Rabbani? in

the Ayah and says:

It is said that Rabbani is he who teaches small knowledge before bigger knowledge. Meaning that he knows at which level or age group a certain aspect should be taught.

4. Not t o rush in t eaching

ALLAH even prohibited Nabi SAW from being hasty in learning the Qur-an, in Surah Al-

Qiyamah, Ayah 16. ALLAH says:

?Move not your tongue concerning it (the Qur-an) to hasten with it.?

5. Having t he proper know ledge of recit ing t he Qur -an

In order to teach the Qur-an, it is essential to know the proper way in which the Qur-an should be recited, which includes at least the basic rules of Tajwid. These basic rules of

Tajwid are Fard and cannot be compromised, as ALLAH says in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah

121:

?Those to whom we have given the book, recite it as it should be recited?

6. Underst anding t hat ikht i laf (dif ference of opinion) exist s, know ing when t he dif ference

is valid and when it is not, and respecting such differences. These differences are primarily based on varying understanding of textual evidences. If one does not know the differing views, then rather not indulge in discussions on it and confirm with those who do know.

The poet says:

People are of four types:

1. The one who knows and knows that he knows, so this is a learned person, therefore ask him.

2. The person who knows, but does not know that he knows, so this is someone who has forgotten, therefore remind him.

3. The person who does not know, but knows that he does not know, so this is someone seeking guidance, therefore guide him.

4. The person who does not know and does not know that he does not know, so this is an ignorant person, therefore ignore him.

Where would you like to be in this categorization?

I ?ddah (an act of worshipping Allah)

We have recently witnessed a drastic spike in

COVID-19 infections, in this second wave that

is characterised by the new COVID-19 variant,

a variant that is more aggressive than that

which we experienced in the first wave. The

saddest part of it all, is that under this new

wave many people including those that we

know and shared close relationships with

have been infected and affected by the virus.

Unfortunately, many children have found

themselves orphaned, and women widowed.

Numerous questions have been posed

regarding the processes women need to

follow in the event that Allah decrees death

upon their spouse.

> What is the period that women need

to undergo for I?ddah?

> Where should she stay throughout the

period of her I?ddah?

> Is she allowed to frequent a home

other than her husband?s house?

> Can she leave her home whilst being

in I?ddah?

> Does the sharia? prescribe specific

clothing type, for women to wear?

There are so many questions that need to be

answered to avoid misunderstanding and

misconception in the name of our beautiful

religion:

I w il l f ir st ly i l lust rat e t he concept I?ddah

in Islam :

Thus by definition, the I?ddah is a waiting

period by which a woman determines the

emptiness of her womb ( Al kifa tul ahyar / Al

bayjuri? ) ? a period of abstinence, or a

specified period during which, after the

dissolution of her marriage through divorce

or death, or after any other form of

separation from her husband under certain

conditions, the woman remains unmarried.

With regards to the above-mentioned

interpretations, we need to understand, that

an I?ddah is an act of worship ordained by

Allah upon each and every married woman.

Generally, the I?ddah of a woman divorced by

her husband is three cleansing cycles (Surah

Al-Baqara verse 228).

IN-DEPTHw i t h

S h e i k h N a be e l M a j i e t

Page 33: Edit or ial

If she is not pregnant or does not

experience any cycles, due to young or old

age, then the I?ddah period changes to three

monthly ( Surah At-Talaq verse 4 ) -lunar

periods- however, if the marriage was not

consummated there is no I?ddah.

For a woman whose husband has died, the

I?ddah is four lunar months and ten days

after the death of her husband ? The basis

for the above phenomenon is explained in

the following ayah.

Allah says: ?And those of you who die and

leave wives behind, they should keep

themselves (the wives) in waiting for four

months and ten days? ? .?( Al- Baqarah verse

234 ).

The above verse contains a command from

Allah to the wives whose husbands die, that

they should observe a period of I?ddah of

four months and ten days, including the

cases where the marriage was consummated

or otherwise.

The quest ion t hat now ar ises is where

should t he w ife of t he deceased husband

st ay t hroughout her I?ddah per iod?

With regard to this question there are two

views from scholars in this regard. The first

group of scholars who make up the majority

and are also the opinion of some of the

senior companions like, Omar, Ibn Omar,

Uthman and ibn Masu?d, Ummi Salama - All

four ma?tha?ib are also included . These

scholars impose upon the widow to

complete her I?ddah period in the house of

her belated husband only ? The widow does

not have the choice of spending her I?ddah

anywhere else, except her husband?s home.

The basis for their preference is taken from

the following verse, where Allah says: ?be

conscience of your Lord Allah and not exit

from your homes?( At-Talaq verse 1) ? in her

I?ddah period

The second group of scholars include the

likes of Aisha, Ali, Jabir, ibn Abas and others,

who are of the opinion that the widow has

the choice to determine where she wants to

stay and complete her I?ddah period,

whether at her belated husband?s home, or

at any other place ? where she feels safe and

settled.

Abdullah ibn Abbas said, that Allah says:

?And those of you who die and leave wives

behind, they should keep themselves (the

wives) in waiting for four months and ten

days? ? .? (Surah Baqara verse 234)

Allah in the above verse does not specify that

the widow need to stay in the house of her

husband, Allah only stipulates the amount of

time that a widow needs to be in I?ddah.

IN-DEPTH

Page 34: Edit or ial

The great Shafi? scholar Imam An?Nawawi?

says that is permissible for a widow to leave

her home at the time of need, like buying

food, business transaction and other

necessities. Scholars have different

interpretations towards the concept ?need? ?

Some includes needs to be in fear of her life,

loss of wealth through burning or stealing,

terror of neighbors might harm her and etc.

Some of the Maliki? scholars permit the

widow to leave her home during the day,

even if not for necessity purposes. Even

working or an important visitation is also

permissible, provided she returns to her

place of I?ddah to sleep.

The wear ing of adornm ent and any t ype

of beaut if icat ion t hroughout t he per iod of

I?ddah (where husband has died)

The scholars agree that it is obligatory upon

a widow to abstain from any form of

beautification and adornment. The reference

for the above position is taken from a

prophetic statement recorded in Al-Bhuhari

and Muslim.

Our beloved Rasullulah (S.A.W) said: It is not

permissible or lawful for a woman who

believes in Allah and the last day, to mourn

for a deceased more than three days, but for

her husband four months and ten days. In

another narration the Prophet (S.A.W)

includes the prohibition of wearing explicit

colorful clothing, except non attracted

clothing, Khokl on the eyes and applying

perfume on her body or clothing is also not

permissible to used. Some scholars further

prohibit the wearing of any form of jewelry.

However, it permissible for her to wash and

clean herself, because that is not considered

as beautification, but rather deemed as

being part of cleanliness.

Disabled people make up 15% of the world?s population, which means that there are about 15% of disabled people in your community. This statistic may shock you as you may not be able to recall seeing many, if any, disabled person attending your workshops or classes. This is largely due to the disabled not engaging in any community activities and staying at home. People may think that disabled people live this hermit-like lifestyle due to their disability keeping them bed-bound, or being shy to step out of the house. But have you ever considered that the disabled do not join in workshops and classes because it is inaccessible and unwelcoming to them?

Yes, we may be the biggest cause as to why disabled cannot attend many classes. Whether we have knowingly or unknowingly made our workshops inaccessible to the disabled, we can make small changes today to create greater inclusion.

1- Be explicitly welcoming. As explicitly unwelcomed as disabled people were in the past, we should try everything in our power to be explicitly welcoming now. This can be done by stating on your flyer that ?ALL ARE WELCOME? or ?ACCESSIBLE COURSE?. You may think that statement is a given, but with the high stigma of disability, stating that the disabled are welcome not only invites the disabled but also states that you want them to attend and that you have created an accepting and inclusive environment.

2- Preach inclusion and acceptance. Disabilit ies come is all shapes and forms and some disabilit ies may present with vocal or physical expressions such as Tourette, speech impediments, Down?s syndrome and many, many others. Being inclusive and accepting of these expressions many take extra tolerance from you and your attendees. Open your class with a reminder for all to be respectful, tolerant, engaged and welcoming.

3- Make your venue or platform accessible. Physical accessibility is not as daunting as it is made out to be. If a venue is inaccessible, not

only does this exclude the disabled person but you also exclude their whole friend/family group too. Simple accessibility features can be put in place such as a designated disabled parking spot, a designated space in the front row of the audience or class for wheelchairs to fit in and hard-of-hearing people to sit, having enough and comfortable chairs around, allowing service animals, and having a spacious enough venue for any mobility aids and extra care givers to fit. If it is too much to have a sign language interpreter or other special accommodations for every class, then send out a request to all attendees on what their needs are so that you can specifically accommodate for those. In doing this you only accommodate for what is needed. We should also be aware that online platforms such as Zoom and Skype have accessibility issues and that you should consult the disabled attendee on how you can accommodate them online too.

4- Increase disability representation. Include disabled people in our community on your staff or board as they will give you first-hand insight and lessons on how to make your lessons, venue and class accommodating. By having a disabled person on your board, you will also create employment for the disabled, increase disability representation for your community, the disabled staff member will be a representation of your company?s inclusion, the disabled staff member will be a welcoming presence for disabled attendees, and having a disabled staff member will inspire the disabled attendees.

There are so many disabled people hungry for knowledge and willing to engage in your classes/workshops but unfortunately cannot due to the lack of accessibility and inclusion in many workshops and classes. Let us make the concerted efforts and change to include and welcome all. By making these small efforts, you and your class will truly be inclusive!

As we embark on this journey through the Holy month of Rajab, known to us as Shahrullah, the month of Allah, we think about the du?ah of the prophet Sallalahu ?alayhi wa Sallam at the commencement of the month where he asked The Almighty Allah to Bless us in the months of Rajab, and Sha?baan and grant us to reach the month of Ramadhan.

One of the highlights of this month is the journey of the Israa and the Mi?raj. A gift given to the Beloved of Almighty Allah after much sacrifice was made, as well as the loss of two personalities extremely close to Rasulullah Sallalahu ?alayhi wa Sallam, Abu Taalib as well as Khadija radhiyallahu ?anhaa. We should increase in our good actions now as we will receive rewards multiplied by the Almighty Allah.

Almighty Allah took His beloved from Masjid al- Haraam to Masjid al- Aqsaa as well as through the seven Samaawaat into the Countenance of Almighty Allah. May we be among those who will soon be able to visit these Holy Lands In Shaa Allah.

All of us were or are somehow affected in these trying times with losing a loved one or difficulties. We can find comfort in our own journey as our beloved Rasul Sallallahu ?alayhi wa Sallam said the Salah is the Mi?raj of a believer. The precious gift of Salah received in the Presence of our Creator. This should bring comfort to our hearts as this divine gift received in the heavens brought comfort to our beloved Messenger. This is our means of communication with our Creator and we have this opportunity on a daily basis. This also connects us to the holy lands as this is where the journey started. Our beloved Rasulullah Sallalahu ?alayhi wa Sallam mentions that Salah is the key to Paradise. Therefore may Almighty Allah grant us to be of those who will perform our Salah on time and find solace in praying and through this receive the key to enter paradise.

Amin yaa Rabbal Áalameen
