    Scalloped Potatoes

n a large pot on the stove bring the cream of mushroom soup (follow soup instructions) to a boil and set to aimmer. Add the garlic, scallions, pepper, the single cup of cheese, and potatoes. Simmer about 15 minuteso reduce the baking time of the potatoes. Add potato mixture to a medium size casserole dish. Top with theemaining cup of cheese and bake for about 45 minutes or until the potatoes are completely tender. This is

my all time favorite holiday leftover recipe; I personally hope you all enjoy this one.

Remember when baking anything, mix the dry ingredients and wetingredients separately before combining. In a medium bowl combineeggs, sugar, canna oil, vanilla, and lastly your shredded pumpkin. In aseparate bowl combine flour, salt, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, bakingpowder, baking soda. Slowly incorporate your dry ingredients into yourwet ingredients. Add your mixture to a lightly greased loaf pan.

Bonus: During the holidays, I like to double the recipe and makePumpkin Bread Pudding. Just cut your loaves into larger cubes andplace them in a casserole dish. Make 2 boxes of the stove top pudding-- instant just doesnt taste the same to me -- and pour over the pumpkinbread. Lightly fold the pudding into the bread. Bake at 350 degrees in apre-heated oven for about 35 minutes.

Bank of America toAccept Washington StateMarijuana Revenue

    BY BRETT WILKINSStaff Writer

Although the voters of Washington state legalized therecreational use and sale of marijuana in last yearselection, the gold rush (or should we say green rush?) ofanticipated weed profits looked to be anything but a rush forcompanies looking for a legal, safe place to stash their cash.

No more. As the states Liquor Control Board has startedcollecting fees from applicants seeking to obtain licenses

to grow or sell marijuana, one of the worlds largest bankshas stepped up and announced it has no problemsaccepting deposits resulting from the sale of legal weed.

The Olympian recently reported that state TreasurerJim McIntire, who had been shopping around for a bank up

to the herculean task, ultimately turned to Bank of America, which already handles the states accounts.

Bank of America is fine with that, McIntire said of themarijuana business. They assure us thats not a problem for

    them.

But what about the feds? After all, despite recreationallegalization in Washington and Colorado, marijuanaremains listed as a Schedule I controlled substance. Its considered by the federal government to be asdangerous as heroin, LSD and ecstasy, and (if you canbelieve it) even more so than crack or methamphetamine.Any financial institutions that get involved in the weedbiz open themselves up to the wrath of a JusticeDepartment that has proved all too willing and eager

to target state-legal medical marijuana. The specter offederal drug money laundering charges looms large over anyfinancial institution that dares foray into the world of weed.

Thats where having Bank of America handle the statesfinances should come in handy, McIntire says.

Im not too worried about it, McIntire told the Olympian. Its actually one of the advantages of having Bank of Americaas your contractor. Its unlikely, I think that the federalgovernment would raid them.

Too Big to Fail or Jail, it would seem, may also translateto Too Big to Raid.

Theyre big enough to look out for themselves on this,McIntire insisted. BoA should be ready to handle tons of cash, literally, since marijuana is largely a cash business.

So far, 1,326 applications to grow, produce or sellmarijuana have been received by the Liquor Control Board. That number has more than doubled in the past two weeks.

And with the national market for legal weed projectedto be worth as much as $10 billion a year by 20 18, you canbet your last Cheeba Chew that banks big and small will bescrambling for a piece of the action.

It has come to our attention that many are purchasingtane-based lighter fluids to make backyard cannabisncentrates, and manufacturing indoors with volatilevents, causing explosions and fires.

Qualified patients can use and make hashish legallyder state law. However, the Bergen decision (2008)termined that using butane to make hash oi l is not coveredthe medical use statutes. California Health and Safety Codection 11379.6(a) makes it unlawful to engage in theemical extraction of a substance as part of the processmanufacturing a controlled substance. The charge carriesprison sentence of 3-7 years and a fine of up to $50,000.

Several explosions and fires have been reported due toHO extractions done indoors with open-air blasting methods.

cently, a 2-year-old child had to be helicoptered fromreka to Sacramento for medical treatment after a butaneplosion in his home caused severe burns on his body.

Dr. Jeffrey Hergenrather, head of the Society of Cannabi snicians, wrote in a recent issue of OShaughnessysat, Approximately 20% of the volatile fuel in a commontane lighter fluid is a combination of other hydrocarbons

cluding benzene, ethyl mercaptan, heptane, hexane, andher toxic impurities. These other hydrocarbons...dontaporate as readily and are likely to remain as residue in

the extracted cannabis...In general these chemicals areconsidered neurotoxins.

Others are using naphtha, isopropanol or acetone for oralconsumable products that can be left behind in considerableamounts. Naphtha may contain benzene, listed by theAmerican Herbal Products Association as a class 1solvent with no acceptable use. CalNORML has consulted withseveral laboratories, who report they are finding impurities incannabis oils.

Another danger of dabbing cannabis oils is passing outafter a particularly strong dose. At a recent c onference, there

were at least three different emergency calls due to useof high-potency cannabis extracts. One person fainted andcracked his nose on the sidewalk, and in another reportedcase a woman broke her teeth on the floor.

    Through Chemo with cannabis

    DAVID SHOREYatient feature

BY DAVID SHOREYSpecial to the Edibles List

Among the surprises of life, I found myself withbladder cancer just after Christmas two years agoin 2011). The bladder cancer story is not a happy

one, and this past summer the team up at UCLAUrology went right on in and removed my bladder, prostate, appendix, 34 lymph nodes (four with cancer),and a host of other parts I dearly miss. This wasollowed up by chemo treatments beginning last August.

After the first dose of Cisplatin, Gemcitabine, andhree or four bags of steroids and other anti-nausea

drugs, I went to the drugs store to get the $1,000worth of more anti-nausea drugs, only to find that mydoctor had forgotten to call those in before leaving townor the weekend. This was my lucky break, thanks tocannabis infused edibles.

I have been a lifelong migraine andcluster-headache sufferer. I first switchedrom smoking pot to smoking medical potback in the mid 1980s, which helps keephe headaches at bay.

The smoking became burdensomewith the cancer, so I had alreadybeen trying out edibles. I had beeneating hash oil, but this made my tongue so stickyno pills could get past. We had capsules of CBDprominent oils, which looked like tar and felt that way in mystomach (no makers mark on these caps).

Looking for organic meds we found an all organicdispensary quite near us, on Venice at La Cienega, whichsold many edibles (Venice Finest Caregivers, 8540 VeniceBlvd.). Very prominent among edibles is a product from TetraLabs called Gold Caps, which has 25 mg of THC (and otherpotencies are available). The pills are indeed gold, and the labels professional and doctor-friendly (http://tetralabs.com).

One pill every four hours took the place of a plethora of verynasty drugs. I should say that I tolerate feeling high, which is aside effect of taking these pills regularly. Especially on chemodays, I have been taking these THC pills both by timing and by

feeling nauseous. For my own safety, I let my son do the drivingon these days.

Unlike other nausea medicines, THC pills work evenafter the nausea has settled in. About fifteen minutes after taking apill the nausea is gone. I generally lie down on the couch and snoozefor an hour or so. My wife is pleased that when I wake up I am veryhungry. I lost a lot of weight after the operation, and have beengaining it back during chemotherapy!

My oncologist was and is very pleased with the clearlyimpressive and undeniable results. He told us that he hasprescribed marijuana many times for his patients, and my chartat the UCLA hospital lists THC pills as my only nausea medicine.

I have gotten sick twice during this ordeal. Both timesit was because I felt so good that I decided not to takemy THC pills, and the next morning I woke up nauseous.

Since all of this has begun, I have been extremelyimpressed with the care I have received at VeniceFinest Caregivers in Los Angeles, Calif. Furthermore, theyare right on top of the edible offerings, and have expanded

their line of goods even while I have been a member thesepast three or four months. I am still a confirmed fan of

the Gold Caps, however, since I know that they work, and workbeautifully.

Here are the products I have mentioned, with my ownstarry grading system:

TetraLabs: Gold Caps 25 mg THC. $6.00 perpill, $30 for the 5 pill bottle) www.tetralabs.com[5 Stars]

Hash Oil: (generic) Good for many things, buthad to go once I went into the hospital. [3 Stars]

CBD-5: Also very handy, but not at all aseasy to use as the Gold Caps. The hospitaland doctors would never have been ashappy with these as they are with the GoldCaps. [3 Stars]

Various candies, cakes and cookies: Never quite sure whatthe dose is, and cant eat them anyway when feeling sick. Veryuseful on other occasions, though. [2 Stars]

About the author:David Shorey, born in 1953 in Chicago, raised his family in Maine. He had been Curator of Musical Instruments at the Library ofCongress in Washington, D.C. during the Carter administration.David has been a flute historian and dealer, a houseboat bui lder, band manager, contra-dance caller and musician, and currentlyruns an international business in antique flutes out of his CulverCity home (antiqueflutes.com).
