Community DayI hope everyone will come out for

Community Day on Saturday, August18. The fireworks show will likely bethe most up close display you will eversee.

Comprehensive PlanningProcess

The borough is in the midst of sev-eral initiatives that will have long-termeffects on the borough. Our compre-hensive plan is moving forward. Ourpublic meeting in May, seeking com-munity input, attracted almost 80 resi-dents. We are in the midst of selectinga professional planning firm that willassist in the planning and improvementof Edgewood Avenue. The goal is notonly the physical improvements them-selves, but to formulate a plan that willimpact the future of EdgewoodAvenue, Edgewood Towne Center, andthe borough owned “parcel D” adjacentto Edgewood Towne Center.

Code Enforcement InitiativeThe final initiative began in early

July. The borough is serious aboutmaintaining the quality of our commu-nity. The borough’s ability to maintainitself as a desirable place to live beginswith maintaining the value of our com-munity. While this argument can centeron public safety or tax burden I be-lieve that its most fundamental compo-nent is the quality of our housing stock

and specifically our code enforcementefforts. The borough has begun goingstreet by street inspecting properties. We will work our way through everystreet, past every property in the bor-ough. We will issue warning letters, allow time for improvements to bemade, but issue citations and takeproperty owners before the magistrateif necessary.

These inspections will focus onevery aspect of a property that fallsunder our property maintenance code. This includes curbs, sidewalks, grassand shrubs, as well as those aspects ofa property visible from the street. Wewill be fair, but apply the same stan-dards throughout every street on everyproperty in the borough. For those ofyou who have complained about spe-cific properties, please by patient. Thecitation system provides a generousamount of time to offenders, and thesystem often allows tremendous lee-way to those inclined to not take careof their property.

Oftentimes, as many of you areaware, questionable activity often cen-ters around neglected or abandonedproperties. We can allow neither ofthose to continue in this borough.Dilapidated properties have a tendencyto not stay isolated. In those areas oftown where those properties haveappeared we will stay focused in elimi-nating them. Property owners will beresponsible for maintaining their prop-erties or be answerable for their neglect.I will continue to report on our efforts.
