Winter EDGE students went to great lengths to get the perfect group picture during the EDGE
scavenger hunt activities!
Winter EDGE Brings a
Great Start to 2017! This Winter Intersession brought quite a few
new things: lots of rain and snow for the valley, a new Visitor’s Parking area in Lot 2
at College of the Desert, and the first ever Winter EDGE Session at the Palm
Desert Campus!
As with Summer EDGE, Winter EDGE 2017 offered new and current students the
opportunity to review Math and English skills in order to better prepare them to
retake the assessment test and potentially
place into higher level classes at COD. A total of 74 students went through the
program this January, and retested before the beginning of the Spring semester.
We are very happy and excited to share that
several students retested into higher level classes and advanced themselves
academically, with a combined total of 77 levels of Math and English removed!
To celebrate their successes and
accomplishments, the Winter EDGE Luncheon took place on Friday, January 27,
2017 from 12-1:30pm in Public Safety
Academy classrooms, 19A & 19B. Those in attendance enjoyed a taco lunch and
cupcake desserts, heard from previous EDGE alumni on their experiences while in the

EDGE Club News The EDGE Club has kept very busy this past
Fall semester, planning and preparing for upcoming Spring events!
One of their recent events included a Spirit Fundraiser at Zpizza in Palm Desert. This
event took place on Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 12-9pm. Those who participated
either mentioned the EDGE Club or took in an
EDGE Club fundraiser flyer into the restaurant to purchase lunch or dinner for the day. At
the end of the night, 25% of the total funds made from the event benefited the club!

Student Spotlight: Kayley Serrano
Congratulations to our 2016 EDGE participant, Kayley Serrano, for being a recipient of the Riverside County National Date Festival, Magic Carpet Music
Scholarship!
Kayley is a music major at College of the Desert and plans to transfer her talents to Cal Baptist University to double major in Communications. Although music is her
passion and career aspiration, she also hopes to become a news anchor.
Her musical adventures began at an early age, as she enrolled in music classes
and began to audition by the age of six! Today, at the young age of 18, Kayley has already had the opportunity to showcase her musical talent through various
performances for sites and events including: Riverside County National Date Festival, Tamale Festival, Academy of Musical Performance, 2016 Air Show, and
Stage Coach, in addition to various charity and church events!
The EDGE Team would like to send a big congratulations to Kayley.
We look forward to your continued success!

Going back to school is never easy,
especially after a long holiday break. For many, the days of sleeping in and having
extra time on your hands is over, until the next break.
Nevertheless, starting a new semester or
quarter is exciting for many as well, as it brings new classes, opportunities, and
time to network and catch up with friends.
Here are a few tips on going back to
school and getting into the right frame
of mind to finish the 2016-2017 academic year strong!
Set some goals for the year or even just the semester. A good way to get
motivated for the new semester or quarter
could be thinking about the things you’d like to achieve. These might be school-
related goals, like getting good grades in certain classes, or personal goals, like
joining a club or volunteering.
Get involved. A good way to get back into things at school and possibly make
new friends is to become involved in activities or clubs.
Break the ice. It’s possible that you will
find yourself in classes with people you don’t know. Other people often feel
nervous about making new friends or being in a situation with strangers. Try
breaking the ice by asking someone in
your class to hang out after class, have coffee or join a study group.
