2014 looks to be a great year for designer gadgets.

From cool new cameras to the latest in wearable

tech, there's tons of tempting new hardware out

there. But is any of it any good?

Aside from the traditional gadgets a digital design-

er/artist must-have like tablets, printers & scanners,

cameras, a fast PC/laptop, etc. we reveal the clever

gizmos designers across the globe have been drool-

ing over this year. Will you give in to any of these

techie temptations?

BEST GADGETS FOR DIGITAL DESIGNERSBy: Alfred Jordan Baltazar

accessory that turns your Apple device into a 3D

built-in Wi-Fi. But the real fun starts when you re-

alise the Social Matic can print out your 2 x 3-inch

snaps directly onto Zink (Zero Ink) paper. So you’ll

not only have a digital record of your shots, but also a

physical one. Essentially then, it’s a modern-day Po-

laroid.

It’s widely predicted that 2014 will be the year of

wearable technology. But while we’ve already seen

so-called ‘smartwatches’ from the likes of Sony and

Samsung, we’re betting that the new Pebble Steel will

be the one to win the day.

As well as having all the cool apps and functionality,

such as being able to take calls, read messages, control

music and so on, the Pebble Steel actually looks the

part with a steel or leather strap (both are included).

And with Pebble soon to launch an app store, there’s

potentially loads of new apps on the horizon.

One for the designer parents

amongst you, Mother is a small,

Russian doll-like device that

connects to your home net-

work and, in conjunction with

son or daughter gets home, or if there’s movement

detected in the house when you’re not expecting it.

More wearable tech, the Wellograph is an activity

tracker, heart rate monitor and running watch that

gives you live information about your activity.

While the aluminium and leather design is stylish,

and the display looks gorgeous, what makes Wello-

CAN YOU TELL US WHAT MADE YOU PURSUE VIDEO EDITING AS A CAREER?Video editing is a natural progres-sion to do after shooting. Why hire a video editor when you can do it yourself and editing is so much fun! When you want to make a story, you must learn the skill to edit it according to your artistic taste and vision.

WHICH ARTISTS HAVE INFLUENCED YOU? AND WHY? One of them is my mom because I grew up tinkering her SLR camera and look-ing at her sketches. Another is my boy-friend, who worked with TVCs and is now a news video editing su- pervisor. In cinema, I love horror DQGVXVSHQVHࡌOPVbecause it teaches you a lot about pacing and timing. When there’s a deadline, you have to edit fast and you can master this by constantly editing. WHAT ASPECTS OF YOUR JOB, YOU TRULY ENJOY?You get to play god. First is creating meaning out of the mundane. It’s about creating form and struc-

ture out of chaos. Second is manipulating space and time. Third is you get to appeal to the audience’s

emotions. Lastly, the two hemispheres of my brain are working. Logic - Are the scenes connecting visu- ally (continuity) and story wise? Does it make sense? Creative and intu-itive – does it feel right? Is the timing right? How long should I stay for this shot? MANTRA OR SAYING YOU LIVE BY? In video editing, when I’m in doubt, I cut and I follow

your heart. The edits should feel right. It also applies to life. If you don’t like it or

it doesn’t work for you, remove it from your life. Don’t settle for something less than you deserve.WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST-STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS AS AN ARTIST? Strength – I don’t put out work that is not up to my standards. When I export it, I make sure I’ve done everything in my power to make it the best I can. Weakness – I work well under pressure. I love the adrenaline rush of beating the deadline. I get this rush especially when I’m doing same day edits in events.WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRA-TIONS FROM?I guess I get inspired from the material it- self. When you watch the raw footages you

try to relive what is hap-pening and you somehow know instinctively how to attack it. That idea is based on your knowledge and past experiences. So live your life! Create new experiences. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT TRIGGERED YOU INTO BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER?The excitement of knowing you can capture moments that you can keep forever. Especially today, on the digital age.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A PHO-TOGRAPHER?I was at the right time at the right place with the right people. Some-times things just fall into place. But technically speaking, it’s all about experience. Before becoming a music and lifestlye photographer I shot all the things I see. I shot a number of rallies (protests) and fes-tivals, university basketball games (NCAA for the San Beda Red Li-ons), worked in the school paper, did a lot of photowalks around Ma-nila, was a backup wedding pho-tographer, shoot parties in various clubs/bars around the metro, tried landscape photography and many more. Again, experience and learn-ing a lot from it. From how I start-ed to where I am right now, I am humbled by all the people I met and the things I’ve learned. That for me, wheter you own an entry level FDPHUDRUWKHLUࡍDJVKLSVLWԝVDERXWthe experience of shooting that you may say “I am a photographer!”.

He arrived armed with only his Nikon D40 and a Sig-ma 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Positioned by the tech booth at the lower box area, he signed a waiver without reading so he didn’t know he was only supposed to shoot 3 songs. He was not satisi-HGZLWKWKHGLVWDQFHVRKHWKHQJRWࡌcloser to the stage resulting in being escorted out by security because he wasn’t allowed to leave the lower box area. Nowadays, he believes it’s an easi-er load to make parents understand when their child wants to run after anything under the scope of arts. He doesn’t regret a day after gradu-ating with a diploma in Professional Photography at De La Salle-Col-lege of St. Benilde back in 2012.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?Casual, real and light. I see my work as not too artsy, even not too basic as well. It’s like I try to incorporate the realness of my subject, may it be in shooting concerts or portraits, weddings or even fashion. The more candid the better. Light, not be-cause of my last name, but for me, if a photo makes you feel so many emotions, then that is a good photo!

WHICH ARTISTS HAVE IN-FLUENCED YOU? AND WHY?Todd Owyoung. He’s a music pho-tographer based in New York. Dave Bergman, a touring music photog-rapher. It garnered at-tention from all major broadsheets and was featured on a half page VSUHDG ,W ZDV KLV UVWࡌ WLPH KDYLQJhis work published which he proudly showed to all his friends and family.

WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACED AND HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH THEM?My parents. Back when I was start-ing, photography was a question-able career. Many do not know this today, or may be they do already. Trying to make them understand that what I do and will be doing my ZKROHOLIHLVGLࡎFXOWWRH[SODLQ%XWI just kept trying not just to shoot, but convinceing them through my work that, “Hey mama and papa, I can make it as a photographer, and thank you for making it hard for me to explain” Why? It’s because as they worry about me, I strive harder for their approval of the my chosen path.

Due to the social aspects of his job as a concert photographer, he met a variety of people inside and outside the music industry. His journey with HOLA began when he met Veana Flores, the Marketing Head of the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Because of his work with concerts, she re-ferred him to the principal of Hola! WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING CONCERT AND EVENTS PHOTOGRAPHER?Know your gear. Some aspiring pho-tographers do not know how good their camera is. I started with an entry level camera, but I understood what it can do. Remember that the cam-era is a tool, and we, are in control on what we want to capture. If you want to become a concert/events photog-rapher, you have to start small. Try shooting portraits/gigs of your musi-cian friends, and/or then local bands in your area. Like what I said, I came in at the right time, met the right people, it was all timing. Also, imporove your communication skills. You never know if the person you once met in a con-cert/local gig would contact you again for future projects. Again, start small, know your gear.

A typical work day in the shoes of Magic consists of the usual getting up early, cooking breakfast, reading news online and of course, check-ing his schedule for shoots. Part of his job as a photo editor of a celebri-ty driven magazine, it’s imperative that he is updated on current news and events, and the skinny on pop culture.

People still spend tons of money on wedding photographers for exactly that reason—they want to look good in these photos. Things don’t always pan out the way you want them to, or expect them to, but you need to have faith in the idea that there is a les-son there that needs to be learned or an experience where you can gain wisdom from. And more often than not, that’s more important than whatever it is that you wished for. I guess you can also say that the journey is more important than the destination, because the lessons you learn along the way are key to what makes you, YOU! More often than not, I think

the goal itself is irrelevant.

Just like Madonna, she does what a performer does; dance and put on the facade because what she lacks

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING ART DIRECTOR?

Listen to what your contributors have to say, being an Art Director isn’t a solo ca-reer. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT TRIGGERED YOU INTO BEING A GRAPHIC ARTIST/ MULTIMEDIA INSTRUCTOR?The turning point on pursuing this career is when I realized where my passion, time and creativity are consumed on. DIGITAL ARTISTAnton Daniel “Bunny” dela Cruz (a.k.a. MountainBunny and/or Isdangcoconut) is a 3D Artist and illustrator based in Quezon City, NCR, Philippines. After earning a B.F.A. from the University of Santo Tomas—where he

studied advertising, graphic design, printmaking, and draw-ing—he worked as a graphic designer, a 3D artist and art director for several years. Since 2005, Bunny has spent much of his free time creating pen-and-ink illustrations, cartoons and three-dimensional illustrations. He believes that creating something that captures attention out of nothing is worth something, worth keeping.

MR. ANTON DANIEL DELA CRUZ, CAN YOU PLEASE TELL

US YOUR STORY?Hi, I’m Anton de la Cruz, people

call me “Bunny”, don’t ask why the name. I’m currently the program head of the Arts Department at CIIT - College of Arts & Tech-nology. Back then in the past, I

tried to be part of the industry and worked in both advertising and the BPO Game Design and Develop-ment. Even though I’m now in the academy, I still do get freelances, contractual and consultation from

the industry.

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BECOME AN ARTIST?

I do, it was part-dream, part-goal. But of course, it all begins if you

are ready for it, because responsibil-ities are greater, larger, and the risks

are heavier.
