“When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him . . . ” (Matthew 8:1–2). Imagine yourself in the midst of that multitude. Leprosy must have been an unattractive disease to push up against in a crowd. It is a literal wasting away of the body, a physical disintegration of the tis-sue. If it were suddenly healed, the results would certainly show. “And (the leper) worshipped him, saying, ‘Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.’” Listen to the utter belief in the leper’s voice. He has the same inner understanding of faith as the centurion; he is convinced it is real. “And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, ‘I will; be thou clean.’ And immediately his leprosy was cleansed” (Matthew 8:2–3).

The belief came before the miracle, not

after. Jesus was responding to faith here, faith as defined in A Search for God, an inner understanding of the law. The leper only makes the suggestion to Jesus; he doesn’t make the flat request of the cen-turion, “ . . . speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” The centurion believed, but he still needed to be con-vinced that it could actually happen. The leper was already convinced before he spoke; his faith was whole and absolute.

Suppose you had been standing be-side two blind men. “And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, ‘Thou son of David, have mercy on us.’ And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, ‘Believe ye that I am able to do this?’ They said unto him, ‘Yea, Lord.’

Then touched he their eyes, saying, ‘According to your faith be it unto you.’ And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, ‘See that no man know it.’ But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country” (Matthew 9:27–31).

Would you have wondered why Jesus told them to keep the miracle to themselves? He had made no secret of His healings. It was hardly likely to have been a psychological trick; if you tell somebody not to do something, he’ll immediately go and do it; most of us have that little failing. But suppose the blind men had been sent by His enemies, in the hope that He would fail to heal them? His enemies needed all the proof they could get that He was a charlatan. Jesus, knowing this, still healed the two men because their faith justified it. But He did not heal them to make His enemies feel small. The least of His concerns was that His enemies be discomfited; so in effect He was saying, “Keep the healing to yourselves; don’t use it as a challenge to My doubters.”

While we are considering the miracles that have to do with tangible physical deformity, suppose we follow Him when “He entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there

which had a withered hand. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day; that they might accuse him. And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, ‘Stand forth.’ And he saith unto them, ‘Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill?’ But they held their peace. And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, ‘Stretch forth thine hand.’ And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other” (Mark 3: 1–5).

Here you sense an almost negative use of His power. In the synagogue, on the Sabbath, He was watched by men who were anxious to see Him break the established law. In this case He did take their attitude as a challenge, because He was dealing with a moral issue. What more fitting place for God’s will to be done than in the synagogue, on God’s day? If His act had been “evil,” against the law, surely God’s hand would have prevented the miracle. But the miracle had happened, before their eyes. The energy that is used here, the defiance of false doctrine, is the dominating factor in this healing.
