Groundbreaking Celebration

On Thursday, June 30, 2011, faculty, staff, students, friends of the College, neighbors, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of Prescott College’s new student housing. Campus tours and refreshments were available at the Garvey Welcome Center along with a drum procession to the housing site, speeches by Prescott College President Kristin R. Woolever, Trustee and alumnus Richard Ach, and Prescott's Mayor Marlin Kuykendall.

“It’s a win-win situation for all involved,” says Jack Herring, Dean of On-Campus Undergraduate Programs at Prescott College. He explains that the school has seen a shift in the on-campus student body over the past 10 years. “More and more of our students are first-time college students coming to us straight from home. There’s a need for a lot of transitional support as these young people start their journey into adulthood. The housing is an integral and tangible piece of that support system.”

Research demonstrates that new students who live in college housing are often more successful in completing their studies. Additionally, revenue generated from housing fees will feed directly back into the College’s operational budget, providing added financial stability and the foundation for further institutional development – expanded curricular offerings, added student support staff, and further renovations and improvements to the campus.

In close consult with architect Phil Weddle of Weddle Gilmore Architects, Haley Construction Co. of Prescott will build the 104-bed facility, situated on the western end of the campus in an area bounded by Willow, Garden, and Sheldon Streets and Western Avenue, to U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold certification requirements.

The selection of Haley Construction demonstrates a “huge commitment to a Prescott business and to the community of Prescott,” says Prescott College President Dr. Kristin Woolever. “Additionally, with plans to employ practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions, we’re walking our talk about the environment and sustainability.”

With construction scheduled to be completed by June 2012, the incoming class of freshman for the following fall term can expect homes that boast passive solar design, solar photovoltaic technology, and EnergyStar appliances and high-efficiency lighting fixtures, all of which mean the buildings will generate 100 percent of their own power and still contribute energy back into the grid.

Living “water conscious” in an arid desert state is built in for students with the use of low-flow water fixtures, rainwater catchment and storage for irrigation of landscaping, and expanded parking for cars and bicycles designed for water infiltration.

And that’s just the beginning. According to James Pittman, Director of Sustainability for Prescott College, “The school has a keen interest in developing policies for future construction and renovation that go beyond LEED certification in order to validate values and methods unique to the College’s culture and bioregional identity.”

Financial Aid and American Student Assistance

Prescott College Office of Financial Aid is pleased to announce our recent partnership with American Student Assistance® (ASA) to help you and your family navigate federal student loan repayment once you leave school.

ASA is a nonprofit organization that has been in existence for over 50 years and currently manages a loan portfolio of approximately $40 billion, supporting nearly 1.7 million college loan borrowers nationwide. As one of the national guarantors for federal student loans, their default rate has consistently ranked among the lowest – 95 percent of all loans in the ASA portfolio are currently “in good standing.”

We have hired ASA as a third party servicer to assist federal student loan borrowers who attended Prescott College. They will contact you a few times during your repayment cycle, first before you go into repayment, and later if you ever fall behind in your payments. ASA has 16 dedicated staff working with student loan borrowers who attended Prescott College. These representatives are fully versed in the various repayment options as well as deferment and forebearance options. They will help you find your lender, resolve issues, change or select an appropriate repayment plan, and generally guide you through the process of managing student loan repayment.

Some answers to common questions and their contact information is below.

What can ASA do for me?

We can help you manage your money and stay on top of your student loans. Our experts will understand your situation—and offer guidance designed to find the right long-term solution for you. We can provide answers on topics like:

• How to make sense of financial aid

• How to build and maintain good credit

• What repayment options you have for your student loans

• What to do if you miss a student loan payment

Also, our website, www.asa.org, features easy-to-understand information and interactive tools—including budget worksheets and loan repayment calculators—that allow you to explore your options, address potential repayment challenges, and achieve financial success.

Why does ASA have information about me?

Your school provides ASA with this information so we can inform you of your student loan repayment options and assist you, should you need help. ASA will never sell your information to a third party—our goal is to give you the right information about your loans when you need it most.

How can I contact ASA?

You can contact ASA at (877) 523-9473 or [email protected]. Learn more about how ASA can help you succeed at www.asa.org.

Creating Justice: The Constitution and Citizen Action in the US

Under the United States Constitution, there are three significant methods of making change: citizen action, legislation, and court decisions. The motivating question for this course is how these three mechanisms interact in creating and sustaining change for social justice. We know that the legislature can create change by changing laws and creating new paradigms. Can the courts cause significant social, political, and/or economic change by how they interpret the laws? And what is the role that social justice movements play in supporting or changing the direction of change? In what ways will other segments of society respond? We will explore possible answers to these questions using a range of applied examples and two case studies: an in-depth examination of the Civil Rights and Gay Rights movements in the United States.

Instructor Judith McDaniel is a writer, academic, lawyer, and social activist. Her books include: Sanctuary, A Journey and Taking Risks.

series of three six-day retreats to provide recovery services to women veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. These retreats are funded by the Women Veterans Health Improvement Act of 2009, as a result of the growing awareness that women need reintegration services that address their specific needs and issues.

The Women Veterans Retreats offer an intensive immersion experience of supportive and challenging activities, in a peaceful natural environment. The retreats allow women to connect with other women veterans and learn tools for dealing with the post traumatic stress and other issues that commonly affect women veterans. In addition to outdoor activities and a high and low ropes course, the retreat provides a format for sharing experiences, and education about stress, resilience, and life skills.

72 women will be served in 2011, and an additional 72 in 2012. To be eligible, a woman needs to be currently in counseling at a Vet Center. The retreat, including airfare, is entirely free. The first retreat was just completed in California, and upcoming retreats are August 20-25 in Colorado, September 23-28 in Washington State. Three additional retreats will be scheduled in 2012.

“I learned how to laugh again, how to socialize, and how to let go. I’ve learned true friendship again and how to trust and accept support from those who care.”

“Attending this retreat made me realize that I am not alone with my PTSD. My anger does not control me, I can control it any way I feel fit to.”

"Ecos" Newsletter was named in recognition of both new beginnings and past memories of our "home" in

Prescott. Reconnect with Prescott College and join us in celebrating the building of new relationships!

"Our culture has forgotten that the words ecology and economics come from the same Greek root ecos, which means home. Ecology is the study of the home, while

economics is the management of the home. How can we possibly understand the relationships of ecology and

economics if we have lost the meaning of home?"

-Prescott College Professor Doug Hulmes

The Prescott College logo represents a sense of balance between the built and the natural environments. The

enclosing circle is a symbol of wholeness.

Prescott College Mission

It is the mission of Prescott College to educate students of diverse ages and backgrounds to understand, thrive in, and

enhance our world community and environment. We regard learning as a continuing process and strive to provide an education that will enable students to live

productive lives while achieving a balance between self-fulfillment and serving others.
