ChallengesWhileitwasonceatechnologythatwasapproachedwithconcernandcaution,virtualizedinfrastructureshaveproventhemselvesconvenientandcapableofdeliveringmissioncriticalapplicationsandservices.HypervisorssuchasVMwareESXi,MicrosoftHyper-V,RedHatEnterpriseVirtualization,OpenStack,andCitrixXenServerhavecomealongway,ultimatelyearningthetrustofenterpriseorganizationswhiledeliveringsignificantimprovementsinoperationalefficiencies.Whilevirtualizationhascertainlymadedealingwithserversandnetworkingeasierandmorecosteffectiveforadministrators,traditionalLUN-basedstoragearraysweresimplynotdesignedforvirtualizedenvironments.LUN-basedstoragerepresentsthelastblockadetodeliveringatrulyend-to-endvirtualizedinfrastructure,addingunnecessarycostandcomplexitytoyourvirtualizedITenvironment.

AsshowninFigure1,ESGResearchindicatesthatafterimprovingsecurityandriskmanagement,returnoninvestment(ROI)isthemostimportantconsiderationinjustifyingITinvestmentstotheorganization,followedbybusinessprocessimprovementsandreductioninoperationalexpenditures.1Itisclearthatbusinesseshaveacloseeyeoncosts,andarelookingtomakesmarterinvestments,notjustlesscostlyones.

Toeffectivelyevaluatestorageforhighlyvirtualizedenvironments,itisessentialtofirstunderstandnotonlythecapitalandoperationalcostsrelatedtothestorageinvestment,butalsothebenefitsthatthisstorageinvestmentcanenableinotherareasofthebusiness.Whileorganizationsarebeginningtocomprehendthestrongjustificationofahigherpricetagforall-flashorhybridstoragearrays,theywouldbewelladvisedtobetterunderstandhoweventheseseeminglyadvancedstoragetechnologiesmaybebuiltuponlegacystorageconceptsthatarenotidealforvirtualizedenvironments.

TheSolution:TintriVM-awareStorage(VAS)TintriVM-awareStoragewasdesignedtoprovidehigh-performancestorageforhighlyvirtualizedandcloudenvironments.Tintridatastoreseliminatetheneedtocreate,manage,map,andmonitorLUNs,planandconfigureRAIDgroupsorvolumestriping,etc.TintristoragearraysareavailableintheVMstoreT5000all-flashmodelsandtheVMstoreT800hybridmodels(flashandHDD).Tintristoragecanbeeasilyscaledoutbyaddingmorestoragearraysinaloosely-coupledfederatedpool,andsupportadvancedfeaturesthatarecommonintoday’sall-flashandhybridarrays,includingfeatureslikethinprovisioning,in-linededuplicationandcompression,instantsnapshotandrestorecapability,andqualityofservicetonameafew.Virtualmachinescanbedirectlystoredandmanagedonspace-efficientTintridatastores,enablingvirtualizationadministratorstohandlestoragetaskswithoutesotericstoragetraining.

Tintri’shands-off,automatedpoliciesgreatlysimplifystorageadministrationwithVM-levelqualityofservice(QoS)andinsight.Thishelpstoguaranteehighperformancewithoutoverprovisioningstorage,aswellassimplifyingtroubleshootingandissueresolutionacrossthevirtualizedenvironment.SevenoftheFortune15companiestrustTintristoragefortheirhighlyvirtualizedenvironmentsconsistingofvirtualmachines,virtualdesktops,databases,andDevOps.SomeofthekeybenefitsofTintriVM-awareStorageareshowninFigure2.

EconomicValueValidation(EVV)ProcessESG’sEconomicValueValidationprocessisaprovenmethodforunderstanding,validating,quantifying,andmodelingtheeconomicvaluepropositionsofaproductorsolution.TheprocessleveragesESG’scorecompetenciesinmarketandindustryanalysis,forward-lookingresearch,andtechnical/economicvalidation.TheEVVprocessconsistsoffourmainphases:Valuescoping,validation,quantification,andmodeldevelopment.

Inthevaluescopingphase,ESGworkswithavendor’sinternalstakeholderstodiscussthewaysinwhichtheproductorsolutioncanimpactpotentialcustomers.Theseeconomicbenefitsmaybeintheformofcostsavings(lowerCapExorOpEx),costavoidance(e.g.,reducingcompliancerisk,eliminatingtheneedforprofessionalservices)increasedrevenue(e.g.,fastertaskcompletion,abilitytohandlemoredesktops),andothersoftbenefits(e.g.,increaseduserproductivity,highercustomersatisfaction).Inthevaluevalidationphase,ESGconductsin-depthinterviewswithend-userstobetterunderstandandquantifyhowthesepotentialvaluepropositionshaveimpactedtheirorganizations,particularlyincomparisontopreviouslydeployedand/orexperiencedsolutions.

Inthefinalstages,ESGblendsthequantifiedvaluesrevealedthroughthestakeholderandcustomerinterviewswithknownindustryvaluesandadditionalresearch,resultinginavalidatedsetofassumptionsonwhichtobuildascalableanddynamicTCO/ROImodel.ThisEconomicValueModel(EVM)acceptsasinputstheanswerstotypicalqualifyingquestionsregardingapotentialcustomer’sITenvironmentandbusinessneeds.Themodelthenreturnsadetailedreportofexpectedsavings,TCO,andROIoveragiventimeperiodwhencomparedtoarelevant,definedpresentmodeofoperation(PMO).AnoverviewoftheESGEconomicValueValidationprocessisshowninFigure3.

EconomicValueOverviewTintriVM-awareStoragewasdesignedspecificallyforvirtualizationandcloudenvironments,andESG’sEconomicValueValidationprocessrevealedthatTintriVM-awarestoragearrayscanprovidesignificantcostsavingsandeconomicbenefitopportunities.ESGLabfoundthatTintricanhelporganizationsinthreeprimaryareas:ByreducingcostsrelatedtotraditionalstorageTCO,bybetterintegratingwithvirtualizedenvironmentstosimplifydailyadministration,andbyprovidinggreaterinsightintodailyoperationsandpotentialissues.

ESGvalidatedTintri’seconomicvaluepropositionsthroughaseriesofcustomerinterviewswithavarietyofhighlyvirtualizedorganizationsthathaddeployedTintriVAS.Theseorganizationscoveredarangeofindustriesincludingonlinegaming,softwaredevelopment,andbiopharmaceuticals;deploymentsrangedfromsmallorganizationswithuptothreeTintriarraystolargeorganizationswith20ormoreTintriarraysatmultiplelocationsaroundtheglobe.

ThesecustomersrevealedhowTintriVM-awareStoragehadhelpedthemreducestorage-relatedTCOinnumerousways,including:

Oneorganizationsaid:

“In4Uofspace,theTintrisolutionofferedbetterperformanceforthesamecapacitythattheothervendor’ssolutiondidin17U,athalfthecost.”

Butafastandeasystoragearrayisoflittlevalueifthearrayisnotreliable.ManyTintricustomerswerethrilledwiththefactthattheyspentfarlesstimereplacingfaileddrives.Onecustomerevensaid:“Afterreplacingourprevioussolutionwherewehaveoftenhadtoreplacefaileddrives,theTintrisolutionhasbeenbulletproof.Wehadathermalissuewherewemeasuredover112degreesinthecoldaisle.TheTintrireportedthehightemperaturebutdidnotshutdownorfail,andwedidnotevenloseadrive.”

ESGalsolearnedthatoneofTintriVAS’smajoradvantageswasthatdailyoperationswerefarsimplertoadministerthantheirpreviousstorageexperiences.EverycustomerwithwhomwespokesharedthesentimentthatwithTintritheysimply“setitandforgetit.”OrganizationsspentverylittletimemanagingtheTintriarray,andmostclaimedthattheyneededlessthanonehourperweektomanage,monitor,andmaintaintheirstorageenvironment.Onecustomerreported:

“Weusedtohaveateamoffourstorageadminsdoingvarioustasksacrossmultipleinterfaces.OnceweswitchedtoTintriwewereabletofreeuptheadminstoworkonothertasks.Tintrimayberequiresonepersonatmostforlessthananhouraday.”

Theabilitytospendlesstimemanagingstoragemeansthatorganizationscansignificantlyreducetheoperationalcostsofmanagingtheirstorageenvironment,freeingupITpersonneltofocusonotherareasofthebusiness,andgreatlyreducingtheamountoftimespenttroubleshootingandresolvingperformanceandcapacityissues.Someof

ESGleveragedtheinformationcollectedthroughvendor-providedmaterial,publicandindustryknowledgeofeconomicsandtechnologies,andtheresultsofcustomerinterviewstocreateathree-yearTCO/ROImodelthatcomparesthecostsandbenefitsofdeployingaTintriVM-awarestoragearrayversusadefinedpresent-mode-of-operation.Themodelallowsforachoiceofanall-flash(T5000)orhybrid(T800)Tintrideploymenttobecomparedwithachoiceofthreetraditionaldeployments:aLUN-basedtraditionalstoragearchitectureconsistingofflashand

spinningmedia;aLUN-based,next-generationhybridstoragearray;oraLUN-based,next-generationall-flashstoragearray.ThemodelconsideredthenecessaryrequirementsforrunningconsolidatedVDI,database,andgeneralservervirtualizationworkloadsthataredefinedbyparameterssuchasthenumberofusers/desktops,capacity,performance,andexpectedgrowth.TheserequirementswereusedtosizeboththeTintriandpresentmodeofoperation(PMO)configuration.ThemodelcalculatedandreportedthedifferencebetweentheTintriandPMOconfigurationsforstorageTCOCapExandOpEx(costofacquisition,power/cooling/floorspace,support/maintenance,administration)aswellasadditionaleconomicbenefitsderivedfromadvantagesresultinginimproveduserandITproductivityandfastertime-to-value.

ItshouldbenotedthatthedataandconclusionspresentedinthisreportreflecttheoutputofESG’seconomicvalueanalysisbasedonthespecificusecasesandassumptionsmodeledforthisreport.ESGacknowledgesthatchangestotheseassumptionswillleadtoadifferentsetofresults,andthereforeadvisesITprofessionalstousethisreportasonevalidationpointinacomprehensivefinancialanalysispriortomakingapurchasedecision.

PricingassumptionsforTintriproductswereprovidedbyTintri.OtherITequipmentandlaborcostassumptionswereobtainedfrompubliclyavailablesourcessuchasITvendorwebsitesandpublishedpricelists.ESGacknowledgesthatlistprices,configurationdetails,orotherdatausedasinputsmayvarydependingoninformationsources.

Example:UsingtheEVMtoPredictSavingsforaModeledOrganization

ToillustratetheeconomicadvantageofaTintriVM-awareStorageversusatraditionalstoragedeployment,ESGranasetofassumptionsthroughtheESGEconomicValueModel.Onescenariomodeledamid-marketorganizationwith2,000employeesdeployingnewstorage(orrefreshingtheirtraditionalstoragedeployment)toconsolidateIToperationsthatarecriticaltoabusinessthatcurrentlygenerates$50Minannualrevenue.TherequirementsfortheVMs,performance,andcapacityarediscussedindetailinthefollowingparagraphsandsummarizedbelowinFigure4.Figure4.VM,IOPS,andCapacityRequirementsfortheModeledOrganization

ESGassumedthatthisorganization’svirtualizationenvironmentconsistedofmission-criticalandnon-mission-criticaldatabases,avirtualizeddesktopenvironmentfor800employees,andseveralotherapplicationsandservicesrunningonVMs.ESGassumedthatthreelargedatabaseswerebeingaccessedbyupto100virtualizedserversand2,000usersatanypointintime.Thesedatabasesandvirtualmachinesrequired20TBofusablecapacityandupto40,000IOPStohandle“bursty”workloadsatpeaktimesofoperation.Theusercommunity,capacity,andIOPSrequirementswereallexpectedtogrowby10%annually.TheVDIrequirementsconsistedofasingleVDIdesktopforupto800employees.Eachdesktoprequired30GBofstorageandperformedamoderateworkloadaveraging20IOPS.Thetotalnumberofdesktopswasexpectedtogrowbyfiveannually,witha10%capacitygrowthandanear-flat3%IOPSrequirements.Finally,theorganizationmaintained40othervirtualizedserverapplicationsandservicesthatrequiredatotalofupto15,000IOPSand10TBoftotalstorage,witheachrequirementgrowingat5%annually.Theseapplicationsandservicesprovidedaccessforupto5,000users(employees,partners,customers,andwebusers)thatwasexpectedtogrowat10%annually.Withthisinformationentered,theESGEVMcalculatedthatbydeployingasingleTintriT5000VM-aware,all-flashstoragearrayinsteadofanothernext-generation,LUN-centric,all-flashstoragearray,themodeledorganizationcouldexpecttotalsavingsandbenefitsofaround$284Koverathree-yearperiod.ThesesavingsresultinanexpectedROIof196%withapaybackperiodof12months.AsummaryofthemodeledresultsisshowninFigure5.Figure5.SummaryofModeledScenarioResultsreturnedbyESGEconomicValueModel

Oftheroughly$284Kinexpectedsavingsandbenefits,roughly$232KisexpectedasaresultoftraditionalstorageCapExandOpExsavings.ESG’seconomicmodelpredicts54%lowercostofacquisitionand79%lowercostofwarrantyandmaintenance.Thisdifferencewouldbevendor-andconfiguration-specific,andinthiscasethecompetitiveproductsanalyzedwereminimallyconfigured.Acquisitionandsupportcostsavingswouldbeevengreaterwhencomparinghybridortraditionalstoragearrayswithamorerobustconfigurationdesignedforhigherperformance.TheTCOresultsfromtheEVMmodeledscenarioareshowninFigure6.

TheTintrisolutionprovidedtotalup-frontcapitalexpendituresthatwere63%lower,whileatthesametimeproviding74%lowerOpExspreadoutoverthreeyears.Thisloweroperationalexpenseconsistedoflowerinfrastructureandmanagementcosts,aswellas74%lowerpower/cooling/floorspacecostswhencomparedwiththetraditionalarraythatrequiresmorehardware.TheTintristoragearrayiseasiertomanageonadailybasissincethereisnoneedtocreate,manage,map,andmigrateLUNsand/orRAIDgroups.Notonlyislessmanagementeffortrequired,butalsotheTintriarraycouldbemanagedbyageneralpurposevirtualizationadministrator.ESG’sEVMpredictedthatthemodeledorganizationwouldenjoya78%lowercostofdailyadministration.

ESG’smodelalsopredictedadditionaleconomicbenefitsthatmaynotatfirstbeapparent.BecauseTintriprovidesVM-levelstorageinsight,itismucheasiertomonitorandtroubleshootpotentialperformanceissueswithouttheneedforcollaborationamongVMware,network,andstorageadministrators.WithTintri,asingleadministratorcanquicklybealertedtoanypotentialissues,identifytheproblemVMs,andresolveissuesinminutes.Thismeansthatenduserscanexpecttospendlesstimedealingwithsupportissues,andITadministratorscanexpecttospendlesstimeandeffortresolvingthem.ESG’smodelestimatesthatthe31%lesstimedealingwithsupport,60%lesstimemonitoringstorage,86%lowercostofdeployment,andincreasedtime-to-valuecoulddeliveranadditional$51Kofeconomicbenefitsoverthreeyears.TheseresultsfromtheEVMareshowninFigure7.

Finally,ESG’sEVMmodelprovidedsomeinsightintootherkeystoragepurchasingmetrics.Whilemanyorganizationstypicallyconsideronlythe$/GBprovidedbyastoragesolution,cautionisadvised.$/GBwillfluctuategreatlydependingonhowcapacityandcostaredefined:forexample,usablevs.usedvs.rawcapacity,orcostofacquisitiononlyvs.allcosts.ESG’smodelcalculatedtheusablecapacity$/GBasafunctionofallthree-yearCapExandOpExrelatedcoststobe$1.69/GBfortheTintrisolutionand$2.42/GBfortheLUN-basedall-flashsolution.ApotentiallymoreusefulmetricisthestorageandmanagementcostforeachVMinanorganization.TheEVMcalculatedthattheTintriT5000wouldprovidethemodeledorganizationwithVMsatacostof$138/VMwhilethecostontheLUN-basedall-flasharraywouldbe$386/VM(nearly3Xmore).TheEVMmodelalsocalculatedthatasingleTintriadministratorcouldeasilymanageall770TBofstorage,whereastheLUN-basedall-flasharraywouldrequireasecondadministratorafteronly300TB.ItshouldbenotedthatESG’sinterviewsrevealedthatinsome
