BE PART OF THE PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT
IN YOUR HOME
You can make a difference in the cause of life. Whether it is
abortion, contraception, the elderly, the handicapped, immi-
grants, assisted suicide or the other causes that disrespect
life, an action by you can make a difference. Our parish Re-
spect Life Ministry is forming an email tree by which you can
do this. A complete explanation of the program will be in-
serted next week and sign up cards will be provided January
31st/February 1st. Let’s get involved!!
“GIVE US THIS DAY”
A limited number of sample copies of “Give Us This Day”, cour-
tesy of Liturgical Press, are available at the entrance to both
churches. This new monthly publication (Feb. 1st-28th) was
created to help sustain your personal prayer practices with
daily prayer for Morning and Evening, prayers and readings for
Mass each day, along with a reflection on the Scriptures and a
daily profile of a saintly witness. If you would like more info
about this publication please visit www.giveusthisday.org.
‘SOUPER’ BOWL SUNDAY
On Saturday & Sunday, January 31st/February 1st, be-
fore and after all Masses the 8th grade Confirmation stu-
dents will be collecting non-perishable foods and mone-
tary donations to benefit our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul
Society’s Food Pantry. We are joining other Rockford par-
ishes as well as the nation in an attempt to ‘feed the hun-
gry’ on Super Bowl Sunday with our own version of a Sou-
per Bowl tailgate party. Please bring non-perishable food
items to the Mass you attend that weekend. Monetary
donations will also be accepted. We need your help to
feed the hungry in our own neighborhood. With your food
donations please keep in mind that February is a tough
time for people who are faced with either paying the heat-
ing bill or eating. According to feedamerica.org, “one in
six Americans (one in four children) live in food insecure
households.” If you can help, please do so. Bear in mind
that there is a healthier way to give. Instead of donating
calorie-dense and nutrient-shy foods, try such items as
canned fruit in natural juices, canned vegetables, whole
grain cereals, oatmeal, dried fruit, cans of tuna, peanut
butter, pasta or long grain rice. Show your support by
placing your donation in the ’soup pot’ for your favorite
NFL team to win the Super Bowl or SVdP. All food and
money collected will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul
food pantry!

SUNDAYS IN ORDINARY TIME
This week the Church calendar returned to Ordinary Time. When most of us hear the word ordinary we immediately think common, routine, or normal. However, the Church reminds us that this new season we enter is anything but normal. We have just finished celebrating the Incarnation. In the face of such love (God becoming one with us), in the face of such an initiative on God’s part, nothing can ever be normal or the
same again!
The term Ordinary Time comes from the Latin root ordinals meaning counted. This reminds us that our time—our days, our months and our years—are counted or ordered. But what are they ordered around? To answer that, just look at what we have finished honoring in the seasons of Advent and Christmas: Christ coming into the world to establish the kingdom of God; Christ coming into the world to save us through his death and Resurrection; Christ coming into the world so that through his death he might be raised up to the glory of God, seated at God’s right hand, to come again at the end of time so that God’s kingdom might be completely and eternally established. This is what time is ordered around! This is what time is counted toward!—Christ’s promised return in Glory as King of all creation. This is what we are called to remember, acknowledge, and celebrate during Ordinary Time. We do this most fully when we gather around the table of our Lord and celebrate the Eucharist. For here we eat the Bread of Life and drink the Cup of Salvation, “until he comes in glory” (Memorial Acclamation).
The annual WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN
UNITY begins this Sunday, January 18, and continues through Sunday, January 25. Let us join other Christian churches in our area this week as we remember the 2015 theme Jesus said to her,
“Give Me A Drink.” (John 4:7)

MEMORIAL CANDLE INTENTIONS
Lighting candles is an ancient practice that we continue to honor today. A lit candle signifies the hope we have in our hearts and the prayers we are offering for a particular intention. In our parish we have two special ways of burning candles for the sake of prayer. Seven day candles burn before the Tabernacle and the Icon of St. Mary in St. Mary Church. They are available to be lighted for your intention & burn for one week. While we do ask for a donation of $10.00, cost should not be a prohibiting factor. Please call the parish office at 815/248-2490, to schedule.

Floral memorials dedicating the two bouquets on either side of the Tabernacle at St. Mary Church are available for loved ones—living and deceased or for special inten-tions such as holidays, anniversaries or other special events. A donation of $15 per vase will help to offset the cost of these flowers and enable you to have a beautiful floral tribute for one week. Please call the parish office at 815/248-2490, to schedule.
