Calling all Altar Servers — “old” and new!

Fr. Hans and our Altar Server Coordinators invite you to a special afternoon retreat on Sunday,

October 7th, from 4:00-6:00pm in the church. A light dinner will be served during the event. Attending this retreat is required if you want to continue being or want to become an Altar Server. We look forward to gathering with you all! Parents, feel free to contact Lai or Fr. Hans if you have any questions.

Are you interested in being an Altar Server? You do not have to attend a Catholic school to be eligible: you simply need to be in the third grade or higher and have received the sacraments of Baptism and First Communion. Go to h-t.org/altar-servers and have your parent/guardian complete the registration form to get you on the list!

Congratulations and blessings to Nathan Cao, Kyrie Delos Santos, and Jadon Liew, who were baptized last week!

We are looking for someone to back up our bookkeeper, Lai, when she is on vacation. If you have experience with QuickBooks and ADP and are interested in getting more details about this opportunity, please give me a call at the parish office or send me an email directly. Thank you! —Ingrid

FOR THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 15-16

Hello, everyone! Grow Group returns this week! Yaaaayyyy! (booo… — quiet, Fr. Dave!)

Ally and I are working on an exciting syllabus for the year. Questions around God’s existence, the nature of God’s Providence, the problem of Evil, a psychological look at the Book of Genesis, a unit on Catholic Social Teaching: these are just some of the topics we’re hoping to cover. We’re also hoping to leave the last 15-20 minutes of each class in order to discuss “current events,” things that are happening in the Church and in the world, viewed through the lens of faith. You are all most welcome to join us — no need to have attended last year’s sessions, register, or anything like that. We’ll meet every Wednesday in the Fireside Room from 6:00–7:30pm.

Our first session is titled “Why do we Believe?” We’ll be talking about the experiences in our own lives that have led us to faith, and some of the traditional philosophical arguments for God’s existence as well. If you’d like to get a head start, take a look at this brief article that describes three dimensions of human existence that seem to point toward the existence of a Creator — creation, consciousness, and conscience:

http://cainaweb.org/caina-programs/does-god-exist/ One more week, and then The Man returns. Pray for me, that I can get all of my stuff moved out of his office and back in to my own in time!

parents! Please pray for our 70+ candidates as they prepare to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit!

C ONFIRMATION Chris Storm— [email protected]

Last week I talked about the greatest event in human history: the Incarnation, when God became a human being! Understanding this helps us to know and understand Jesus. To have a relationship with anyone, we have to know them. That is especially true with God, in the person of Jesus Christ. We are following the Jesus of the Gospels. We need to know Him: 100% human AND God. Read the Gospels as if you have never read them before. Jesus is more than the nice guy your grandma wants you to know! Read some of his radical sayings:

Lk 9:23, Mt 20:26-28, Mk 8:34-38, Mk 10:21, Lk 6:22, Mt 6:25, Mt 7:21-23, Mt 10:28, Mt 23:10, Lk 14:26

Now, do these give me a different perspective on the Jesus I want at the center of my life? Spoiler alert, YES! Now, re-read these sayings, praying that Jesus will reveal Himself to you, and trust that he will. Next week, next steps, the Gospels! Amen+

We began our weekly gatherings last week, but we still have room for a few more folks to join us! We’re kicking things off with the Book of Exodus, transition into a study of the Jewish roots of Advent, then resume our study of Exodus after the holiday break. Class is on Wednesdays from 9:00-10:30am in the Fireside room. If you’d like to join, email Erin or call the parish office so you can get a copy of the book and catch up from our first week.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED

You may have noticed the backpack number in the table above has now started to change. One school, Elmonica, received their first round of backpacks from us for this school year. Other schools, including Ridgewood, Beaver Acres, Barnes, Sexton Mountain, and our newest addition, Nancy Ryles, will all begin over the next couple of weeks. Still too early to know how many backpacks will be filled each week, but I am certain it will be well over 100. We will also continue to provide Bridges Academy food for their on-site pantry. Through this collective effort, over 500 people receive supplemental food assistance each week. As always, thank you for your generous support of this program.

Second Home for Youth, a program of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, works together with the homeless liaisons of the Beaverton School District, the Beaverton Dispute Resolution Center of the Mayor's Office, and volunteer home-providers to find stable housing for young people who want to finish their high school education. It is a community response to the difficult problem of providing housing for unaccompanied, homeless youth while they attend high school. They have an incredible 94% graduation rate. I recently attended a fund-raiser for Second Home and was so impressed as I listened to two of the youth who had gone through the program explain what it meant to them and the impact it had had on their lives. One told the story about how it enabled him to remain in this country and had completely changed his life. The other shared that she was now a junior in college pursuing a double major. Truly amazing to hear how the hosts families had formed, and transformed, their lives at such a critical time for them.

The last speaker was from a host family. He shared how the student had come to their attention and how blessed they felt to have had the experience. The more he shared the more I began to realize the student was someone this parish knew: he and his family had lived in our Ministry House for a few months starting in February, 2017. When the rest of the family moved out of town, the student wanted to stay here and graduate. The Second Home program allowed that to happen. The student is now attending college in the Puget Sound area on a full-ride basketball scholarship and is thriving.

For more information about Second Home, please visit http://emoregon.org/second-home or feel free to email or call me. It is an incredible program that is always looking for host homes. Are you ready to GO MAKE A DIFFERENCE in a student’s life?

The CDC recommends that adults and children older than six months get their flu vaccine by the end of October. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the antibodies that protect against the flue to develop in the body, so the sooner you and your family get vaccinated, the better! Visit h-t.org/health-ministry for locations where you can get the vaccine and for more information.

National Coffee Day is Sept. 29th!

Americans drink more than 400 million cups of coffee per day! If each of us drank one cup of Fair Trade coffee, coffee farmers would receive

an additional two million dollars to help them address the serious economic and environmental challenges facing their communities. That’s two million dollars in just one day, from one simple choice! But where can you get fair trade coffee? Right here at Holy Trinity, from Equal Exchange! Contact Eileen to place your order today!

The 40 Days for Life fall campaign begins this week! The opening prayer vigil is this Sunday, Sept. 23rd, from

2:30-3:30pm at Lovejoy Surgicenter.

Upcoming Events in the Archdiocese 9/26–11/4 — 40 Days for Life fall campaign. Vigil hours at Lovejoy Surgicenter (933 NW 25th Ave.) are 7:00-7:00pm every day; to learn more, visit 40daysforlife.com/portland. October — October is Respect Life Month! T ITAN CALENDAR FOR 2018-2019

Hello to my fellow Holy Trinity parishioners!

Through the Catholic Schools Endowment Foundation of Oregon and the generous support of Catholic school champion Joe Weston, Holy Trinity Catholic School has the opportunity to raise over $80,000 for our future.

Endowment Fund Match: If we raise $25,000 for our endowment fund, we’ll receive a $25,000 match

Tuition Assistance Match: If we raise $15,000 for tuition assistance, we’ll receive $15,000 match

Donations made by HT parents are not eligible for the match program; as such, we must expand our reach for those who support Catholic education and those who seek Catholic education. We welcome donations from parents, of course, but are seeking donations from parishioners, alumni, extended families, and friends to meet our goals.

The support of parishioners is vital in the realization of our school mission. The contributions you make, in both time and treasure, create a positive impact in the lives of our students and our school at large. I am happy to answer any questions you might have; you are welcome to contact me at any time!

All the best, Ashley Sheridan

A NOTE FROM O UR P RINCIPAL

We have kicked off our only fundraiser of the year — the Titan Run! Each year, students are asked to collect pledges (per lap or a single donation) in order to raise money for our school. Each family has a goal of raising $200, and students

earn raffle tickets for awesome prizes. On October 11th, we will celebrate with running, cheering, a DJ and a school provided lunch for all. Plus, some lucky students will get to throw a pie at Mrs. Sheridan!

You can make pledges via credit card online at 99pledges.com/fund/titanrun2018, where you can select a student or teacher for your donation to be credited towards or just give to the fundraiser in general. Cash and check donations can be turned in to Mrs. Hittner at the school office. To learn more and see photos from past Titan Run events, visit htsch.org/titan-run.

Last year, we promised together that St. Andrew and Holy Trinity would “seek opportunities to jointly rediscover the power of

the gospel of Jesus Christ for our time.” We have just such an opportunity coming up in October, where we will share an ecumenical discussion on the Church, Ministry, and the Eucharist. Join us on October 2nd, 9th, and 16th and attend one or both of the sessions that will be held each day:

Holy Trinity’s Fireside Room, 10:00-11:30am St. Andrew’s Fellowship Room, 7:00-8:30pm

Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer. It does not replace other types of prayer, but adds depth and meaning to all prayer. All are invited to participate and learn more at an introductory workshop this Saturday, Sept. 29th, from 8:00-12:00pm in the Fireside Room. The workshop is hosted by Contemplative Outreach of Portland (COOP). There is a suggested donation is $35.
