What are the levels of organization in ecology?

• Organism: any living thing• Population: a group of one species of living things • Community: many groups of living things

interacting with one another• Ecosystem: communities of living things

interacting with non-living things • Biome: group of ecosystems that have the same

climate and similar communities• Biosphere: part of Earth in which life exists

including land, water, and air

What level do these belong to? Add these examples to your ecological bullseye

• Poison Dart Frog and Monarch Butterfly and Waterfall

• Earth

• Poison Dart Frog

• Tropical Rainforest where the dart frog and butterfly live

• One sunny day in the forest a group of deer wandering found a berry tree and began to feed off of it. The sounds of other animals were also present in the forest, some of which included owls, rabbits and eagles. The animals all shared a common living area and lived quite happily. The animals loved this coniferous forest because the water was so clean, the air was so crisp, and the rocks provided great hiding places for enemies. The sun was also very radiant in this area, which supplied warmth for the animals and energy for the plant life in this area. The animals here only lived in this area because the climate suited their lifestyle. All the animals were quite happy living on this part of Earth .

Characteristics of All Living Things (Organism Level)

A space ship lands at your house. You look inside and see a creature. You know it’s alive, but what specifically makes

it living. Discuss it with your peers

We Should…

• Poke it? • Feed it?• Shine a light on it?• Put it in the fridge?• Scream at it?• Pour water on it?

WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT ABOUT OUR ALIEN FRIEND???

Page 14: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

IT’S ALIVE!!!

• ALL OUR TESTS WILL PROVE IF THE ALIEN IS A

LIVING ORGANISM

What are the characteristics of any living thing (organism)?

• Composed of cells

• Requires energy

• Growth and development

• Reproduce

• Respond to stimuli

• Evolve and adapt

• Maintains homeostasis

• Composed of genetic material

Page 16: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things Are…

• Composed of cells

Cell: Basic unit of function in all living things

50-75 trillion that make up your body!!!!

Page 17: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things …

• Require and Use Energy – Acquire it in many ways

• From the sun, food, plants

I LIKE OREOS, ALTHOUGH I SHOULD EAT VEGGIES!

Page 18: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things …

• Grow and Develop– Change in size and

maturity (life cycle)

- Cells mature into

specialized cells

I LIKED IT WHEN I WAS A BABY CREATURE!

NOW I’M OLD AND WRINKLED

Page 19: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things …

• Reproduce– Two Types: asexual reproductionone

parent,offspring is identical to parent

sexual reproduction two parents

offspring is

not identical

to parent

I MISS MOMMY AND DADDY CREATURE WHO CREATED ME!!

Page 20: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things …

• Respond to Stimuli (environmental factor)

Examples: heat, light, cold, sound

I CAN’T STAND THE COLD! IT MAKES ME SHIVER

Page 21: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things …

• Evolve and Adapt: – population changes according to environment

change- as a group. The environment selects– for certain characteristics

MY HEAD USED TO BE ROUNDER, BUT THIS SHAPE HELPS MY POPULATION CATCH FOOD QUICKER, SO OVER TIME MY CURVY HEAD FRIENDS SURVIVED, AND NOW WE ARE THE DOMINANT POPULATION

Page 22: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things …

• Maintain homeostasis: – keeping the same internal conditions no

matter what is happening outside (externally). (sweating, shivering)

MY BODY TEMPERATURE IS 230 DEGREES ALL THE TIME, EVEN IF IT’S 20 DEGREES OUTSIDE. ISN’T THAT COOL!! Ha Ha Ha!!!

Page 23: Ecological Bulls-Eye Organize the bulls-eye small to large using the word bank –(Your Name) –1st floor 800 building –Your class grade (9 th, 10 th, 11

All Living Things …

• Composed of Genetic Material:

All living things must have instructions so that our body knows what to do. It is either in the DNA or RNA form.

What does DNA or RNA stand for?

Do Not Ask? Right Now Ask? Nah…Deoxyribonucleic Acid and Ribonucleic Acid
