Mid-Round New Release BullsOur Genomax lineup is as good if not better than it has ever been after the August 2017 proof round. Bulls like Progenesis Midnight and Westcoast Yamaska with LPI’s of 3506 and 3450, respectively are hard to beat. Still, we have a suite of new bulls for producers to consider that are also irresistible. Here is a synopsis.

Walnutlawn SIDEKICK – Abbott x McCutchenWith a +19 rating (+22 DGV) Sidekick is the highest rated Type bull available above 3000 LPI. Customers have been asking for him for quite some time. Even though quantities will be very limited for at least the next several months, this bull has been released to the market. His sire Willsbro Abbott, despite high numbers was not marketed extensively due to his HCD carrier status. Fortunately Sidekick is not a carrier. Expect exceptional Type improvement and even fancy Type too. Still, Sidekick has a very balanced profile and can be used in a wide variety of settings. Bonus: he is an A2A2 sire.

Claynook RUMMY – Abbott x Wickham Rated +16 for Type and with a well-rounded 3334 LPI rating, Rummy is another appealing HCD-free, A2A2 Abbott son for those looking to add extreme Udder (+16) and Feet & Leg (+14) improvement in a moderate frame package (+7 DS), along with notable ratings for both SCS (2.58) and Mastitis Resistance (109). This bull was truly dealt a good hand.

Claynook FARWELL – Abbott x Silver A third Abbott son, also with high LPI (3326) and exemplary Type numbers (+14 Conf, +13 Mammary, +13 F&L), Farwell is also HCD-free and A2A2, but with slightly higher Milk (+1314 kg) and perhaps a better health trait profile than his paternal brothers, especially for Milking Speed (108). He’s certainly a bull that slots in easily in lots of different scenarios and can be expected to be a safe choice on heifers too.

Westcoast ARDOR – Draftpick x MVP With many familiar bloodlines close up in his pedigree, Ardor is none-the-less packaged a little differently, as one of just a handful of Draftpick sons in our lineup and from an MVP dam which is rather unique as well. Ardor carriers the very attractive combination of Immunity+®, Robot Ready™ and A2A2 designations. In addition he is expected to deliver high Fat yields (+98 kg) and solid Type (+10) in a Durable package (112 Herd Life & 111 Daughter Fertility). Not surprisingly he is rated high for LPI (3419), Pro$ 2758 and TPI (2710).

Westcoast GRIFF – Afterburner x Jacey – Again with a slightly different background, Griff brings in some different bulls both topside and bottomside in his pedigree. We recently visited Westcoast’s Morsan barns and saw Grace, the dam of Griff, just going dry after her first lactation. A barn-full of cows like her would make a pretty awesome herd.

Griff might just be the ticket too. He is a Robot Ready™ option that ticks all the boxes. He offers high component yields with a near perfect Type breakdown including solid numbers for Rump improvement. This is one that will fit in most western Canadian herds. Give Griff and this entire enticing offering a try!

WestGen Youth Insight - by Martin RypmaFor most who don’t know me I didn't grow up on a farm. I became involved in the industry thanks to my dad, being a well-known hooftrimmer in the Fraser Valley. As I became of age I started my first year in 4-H and have competed there and in WCC events for the last 10 years. For the past 8 years I’ve also worked on multiple dairies in Western Canada and in Eastern Canada as well, connecting with breeders who I now can call great friends.

As I got involved in 4-H and WCC I developed a liking to clipping and preparing show cattle. So at first working after school and then full time I also began working shows and sales for T&L Cattle part time. After about 2.5 years of just fitting locally I started to venture out, helping strings in other Western and Eastern provinces and with a couple trips down to the states.

With the knowledge and skills learned through WCC and 4-H as well as from a group of mentors, I started to purchase my own cattle hoping to develop a "diamond in the rough!" As with any new venture it has its ups and downs but that is to be expected. This past year a huge accomplishment for me was winning the grand showman and grand champion calf honor at WCC with a heifer I bought last fall on my way home from The Royal. The feeling in the middle of the ring with an animal that you have worked all year to develop for that day is bar none something you'll never forget.

That being said, there is always a great thrill in winning, but for me the 4-H and WCC programs do so much more for young people. This industry is very people orientated and that is why I love it so much. The ribbons will fade, trophies will get dusty but the people you meet and the friendships that are made can last a lifetime. For me that is the point: the passion for this industry is shared with so many great people you can all call your friends.

Semex® Product Development efforts focus on the creation of future bulls and bull mothers via IVF and early release semen. By genomically testing embryos to determine sex and TPI/LPI level, only the genetic outliers are kept and implanted in Semex recipients while the majority become available for purchase by Canadian dairy producers.

Incorporating Genomically Tested Female Embryos into your genetic plan is a sound strategy to help drive increased profits from your herd in the first generation and every generation that comes after.

Dairy Tours

Our group joined a Semex Farm tour

to Stone Front Dairy and Majestic View Dairy in Lancaster Wisconsin. Stone Front Dairy is owned and operated by Lyn & Andy Buttles. Andy showed us around their barns. Their farm was started in 1913 by Andy’s great-great grandfather and moved 15 years ago to expand to the current freestall barns. Andy Milks 700 Holsteins, Jersey and Brown Swiss 3x per day. They are still expanding with another new barn being built.

Majestic View Dairy is owned by partners John & Peg Haskins with Ron & Terri Abing and is run by the Abing family and their daughters Amanda and Sarah. Sarah works for Semex

and joined us as well on the tour. Majestic View has been growing agressively since 1999 and have 1,100 cows. and farm 4,200 acres of land.

We enjoyed the tours at both farms and meeting up with the tour group from Semex Brazil and Pakistan.

Our group had a fabulous time at WDE 2017 and can't wait for next year! Let us know if you want to join us in 2018!

TInterpreting a Sire Proof for FatWith increased consumer demand for higher fat dairy products we are seeing our milk marketers and dairy farmers adjust rapidly to try to fill this need. Increased scrutiny is being placed on Fat production in genetic plans across the Western Provinces, but what exactly do a bull’s proof numbers for fat mean?

In this example we will look at the popular Genomax bull Yamaska’s production proof. His proof shows 119 KGS of Fat with a +.61% Deviation. These numbers are estimated breeding values, and since an animal transmits on average half his breeding value, Yamaska daughters are expected to produce 59.5 KGS(119 divided by 2) more Fat per 305 day lactation than daughters of a 0 KGS Fat bull on a mature basis. Further, if Yamaska is mated to a female with an EBV for Fat of 60 KGS, the daughter of this mating would be expected to produce 119+60 = 179 then 179/2 = 89.5KGS more Fat per 305 day lactation when compared to the average cow in Canada, under average management. If the management level in your herd exceeds average, this willbe a conservative estimate.

Similarly for Fat % Deviation, a sire like Yamaska with a +.61% deviation would be expected to sire daughters with a Fat percentage .30% higher than a zero rated bull. Mating Yamaska to a Cow with an EBV for Fat % of +.20% we would expect that offspring to yield .61+.20 = .80 then .80/2 = +.40%. We expect this offspring to produce milk with a fat percentage .40% higher than the average cow in Canada under average management.

Manure Pit TreatmentSuper charge your lagoon with

billions of beneficial bacteria

It’s time to SUPER CHARGE your lagoon again!

Use Bactzyme to treat your lagoon so it’s easier to agitate pump and irrigate with less odour!

What is BactZyme? BactZyme is a natural blend of bacteria and nutrients. When applied to lagoons and plants, BactZyme releases enzymes that galvanize the natural digestive process of solid waste breakdown. These eco friendly enzymes and nutrients accelerate the natural biological activity and decomposition process.

What will BactZyme do?Through accelerated digestion, BactZyme will liquefy solid material so that it’s easier to agitate, pump and irrigate. A treated lagoon can be pumped lower than ever before with fewer plugging problems. Once transferred to cropland and because it’s already predigested, this manure will soak into the soil faster with less chance of caking on the field surface.

By increasing the level of bacterial activity in the lagoon, BactZyme actually prevents bad odors from forming in the manure. This will be

noticed at the time of applying the manure on the field and consequently much less offensive to neighbour’s noses and friendlier to the environment as a whole.

What makes BactZyme different from other products on the Market?

BactZyme contains only enzyme producing bacteria, where many other products are liquid bacterial stimulants that are meant to stimulate existing bacteria to better performance. These are typically more expensive and marginally effective. Bacterial products have proven themselves to be much more effective at a far lower cost. BactZyme cannot be beat for convenience. BactZyme does NOT have to be mixed with water before putting the product into the lagoon. These convenient blocks also ensure uniform application rates on a weekly or biweekly basis.

Ask your Genetic Advisor about getting started with Bactzyme today!F
