Encouragement to Grow: Lenten Small Groups.

ALLiSon CoChrAn

I t is common practice for christians to give some-thing up during Lent as a way to sacrifice, humble

themselves, and focus more on God’s presence in their lives. Instead of giving something up this sea-son, I would like to suggest each of us take something on as a way of deepening our faith and spiritual for-mation. This could involve reading a lent devotional every day (there are apps for that). Or it might entail attending a FPc Maundy Thursday Dinner/Worship or taking part in our four-week long Lenten Small Group series. Through these opportunities, you’ll have the chance not only to focus on your relationship with christ, but also to develop your relationships with other members at FPc. In the midst of a fast-paced and hectic world, having the chance to connect with one another and reflect on matters of faith in an hon-est and authentic way is truly a gift from God. The curriculum we will use for the four-week Lenten Small Group series is based on the sermons preached during four of the seven Sundays in lent. Each week, you’ll have the chance to reflect on the sermon and the broader theme that will guide us throughout lent – “Wrestling with God.” Two com-ponents of the curriculum will help facilitate this process. First, there will be short videos that present each of our preachers answering a few questions about their sermons. These videos are designed to give you further insight into the sermons and ideally should be viewed prior to attending the weekly small group meetings. The videos will be available via the church website. Second, a brief written curriculum will be provided for each session that gives you more background on the biblical text preached on and pro-vides a number of discussion questions. One or more group facilitators will help guide the conversation. Maundy Thursday dinners and worship are potluck (so get your best recipe out) and will have at least one pastor in attendance to lead a short service that includes communion. There are many Lenten Small Group and Maundy Thursday Dinner/Worship meeting time and place op-tions. More information, including links to register, can be found on the church’s website. For questions, contact Allison Cochran at [email protected] or 404-228-7718.

To register for any group study, go to the FPc website or contact Allison Cochran at [email protected] or 404-228-7718.

Some scholars believe lent began as a one or two day (forty hour) fast before Easter to com-memorate the time Jesus was in his tomb. Most scholars conclude, however, that it wasn’t until 325 ce at the council of Nicaea that the 40-day lenten journey many christians now observe began. Nevertheless, beginning on February 10th, we hope you will join FPc on a 40-day pilgrimage as we reflect and remember christ’s ministry on earth, christ’s death, and christ’s resurrection. Rather than give something up, we hope you will take something on, like joining a lenten small group or attend-ing one of our special lenten services. Ultimately, we pray these forty days will bring you closer to God and our commu-nity. So, come, taste, and see for yourself that the LORD is good.

Taking on Lent Ever considered taking something on, rather than giving something up?

Ann-hEnLEy SAundErS

L ent literally means “the forty” or “fortieth,” and there is

no denying the significance or prevalence of the number forty in biblical literature. The flood lasts forty days and nights (Gen-esis 7:4, 12, 17); the Israelites wander forty years in the wilder-ness before God frees them from slavery; and Jonah warns Nineveh for forty days of its destruction, just to name a few. Forty day fasts are equally common in scrip-ture, such as Moses’ forty day and night fasts on Mount Sinai (exodus 34:28, Deuteronomy 9:9, and Deuteronomy 9:18); Elijah’s forty day and night fast (1 Kings 19:7-8); the Ninevites’ forty day fast (Jonah 3:4); and Jesus’s forty day fast in the wilderness, during which he’s tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11).
