Abstract

Narrative Scholarship is one of the expression strategies of academic

research raised and practiced by American ecocritic Scott Slovic Narrative

Scholarship refers to not only a writing method which mingles the scholars

experience of real life and research reading but also a writing strategy that

blends the characteristics of narrative vividness and sensitivity into description

in an organic way Narrative Scholarship is mainly characterized as-- the

attempts to explore the balance between engagement and retreat or savor

and save impelling them to strengthen each other providing the real-life

context for common literature reading and targeting at the reception by the

common readers and the maximization of the reader range

Narrative Scholarship relates to Phenomenology in two aspects Above all

both of them value the real-life world but not the highly abstract conceptual

world so they donrsquot exclude materiality at all Next they can obtain the identity

in the meaning layer without the help of abstract concept

If we analyze Narrative Scholarship by phenomenologist Roman

Ingardenrsquos theory it makes sense On the layer of representation of the object

the narrative part of Narrative Scholarship reveals the real-life world in the

context Also on the layer of meaning Narrative Scholarship seeks the identity

on the level of ecocriticism The latter reflects on two ways First of all the

narrative part retraces original experience including ldquocomplete selfrdquo and

ldquocommunity feelingrdquo Second the part of comment grants certain meaning to

the words again packs the original experience and gives the original

experience of ecocriticism as well as stimulates people to love nature and pays

more attention to the environmental problems

By analyzing Narrative Scholarship with Phenomenology we can

summarize the advantages as the following

To writer namely the critic it is easier to express his savor of nature and

life and easier to realize the dreams as an ecocritic-- saving the environment

Besides analyzing the layer of meaning can retort criticism from other critics

and improve that get rid of the highly abstract theory is not against the theory

itself thoroughly

To reader namely the public who need to know something about the

environment the narrative part makes criticism approachable supports a

buffered area to the public for understanding the ideas of ecocriticism and

makes the original text more translatable

Meanwhile as an innovation of methodology of ecocriticism it is

inevitable in the process of using Narrative Scholarship Above all to break the

limits between creation and research will produce an interdisciplinary

advantage but it will also bring about the situation that creation combines

research ponderously Then both of them will probably do harm to each other

In the next place to enlarge reader range mandatorily will possibly lead critic

himself to lose his essential attributes

Regardless of the disadvantages of Narrative Scholarship its values are

as the following Narrative Scholarship is a chase of the responsibility and the

special methodology of ecocriticism Narrative Scholarship sets a new way to

maximize the reader range and to break away from the current academic

situation which is poor popular obscure excessively rational and unpractical
