NARRATIVE REPORT ON THE ON-THE-JOB TRAININGOF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ELECTRONICS COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING

A. INTRODUCTION

ECE 49 Practicum deals with the application of knowledge and skills of the students in Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering. The On-the-Job Training is a course designed to place students in the industry or company where they are expose to the actual field of work. The company/industry immersion will provide an experiential learning where the students can apply knowledge and skills in the actual place of work and at the same time expose them to the real industry practices and acquire industry practices that they will need in their future employment or lifetime career.

The ECE student who finished the required units prerequisite to the course may enroll for OJT while Irregular students who are expected to graduate at the end of the Second Semester 2014 may enroll for OJT. An ECE student must meet the required minimum exposure of 320 hours and prior to deployment they must submit all documents pertaining his/her application and acceptance for OJT. Once deployed, they will be evaluated by his/her immediate supervisor from the company periodically and at the end of the OJT they are all required to submit a final reports (weekly, monthly and narrative reports ) in order to properly document all the learnings/skills that they acquired after the OJT.

B. GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAM

In line with the thrust of Bicol University to meet the demand of the industries for technically competent and well-rounded graduates, the practicum program aims to:1. To enable the students to apply and appreciate the relevance of classroom learning to the actual work setting.2. Enable the student to gain experience, relate and apply the theories he/she learns in school to real industrial situations and problems;3. Give the students an insight of the various operations, processes, techniques and controls presently used in industry;4. Develop and instill a positive attitude, self-confidence and self-motivation required of a responsible professional in handling tasks; and5. Impress on the student the importance of human relations in the working place or environment.

C. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

Here are some of the problems encountered by the student in their conduct of OJT on their respective assignment both technical and non-technical:

1. Delay of deployment for some students due to lack of communication from the Company.2. Adjustment with the working environments and with superiors.3. The allotted hours (320 hours) for OJT is insufficient so that the student may fully immersed and learned the needed skills provided by the Company.4. Unavailability of tools to be used during repair and maintenance, since some tools is not provided by the company to the trainee.5. Lack of knowledge on particular technical skills needed by the Company.6. Lack of computers/laptop to be used during training.7. Lack of time for the assigned task.D. ACTION TAKEN

The number of hours of the OJT is just reflected from the approved BSECE curriculum of the University. Conduct of pre-deployment seminar must be given to OJT Trainees in order to tackle the issues and concerns before the trainees began their work. A regular monitoring of the OJT is being done by the coordinator in their respective agency/company.

E. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

On-The-Job Training Program is one significant aspect in a students life because it helps the students trainee to explore their knowledge and skills in actual work settings. On-The-Job Training is the first step to the actual working experience of the students. The student trainee can have the opportunity to apply what he/she learn in the four corners of the classroom and discover that there are still a lot more to learn from the actual field of work.Student trainees also helps the agency/company in terms of man power and gives them the opportunity of hiring them because they are young, fresh-minded, not expecting high salary, dedicated, updated, and knowledgeable in terms of work and attitude. With these, I recommend that Student Internship or practicum be fully supported by the University by encouraging students participate and really take it seriously to conduct OJT and be a compulsory requirement for any graduating students in the entire University.A regular revisit of the BSECE curriculum should be made for updating and taking OJT into consideration. A technical refreshing course should be given to OJT in order to test their readiness/skills prior to their deployment. More linkages must be established related to the field of specialization provided by the school in order to match the skills needed by the company.
