In this Peri-operative conference, much emphasis are made on seeing an elderly through major surgery from pre-operative phase to post discharge care (start to finish). Having to undergo major surgery often poses stress to many older adults and their families. The fear of loss of independence resulting in the need to rely on family members for care are the most common fears amongst the elderly who need an operation. Stoma is often perceived as daunting not just to the change in body image but tedious process to care for even in the younger population. In an elderly with reduced physiological and functional capacity, the care needed for stoma management may be a taken into consideration in decision making for surgery. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the considerations in stoma care for the elderly surgical patients and be able to better assist them with maintenance of their lifestyle and preserving independence. The hands-on session on ostomy products in the market will allow participants to better care for the elderly with challenged needs in stoma care.
