Dear Parent/Guardian,
Well folks, it seems that everyone has weathered the Halloween Season in good fashion. We were par?cularly pleased to have the large family turnout for our Trunk or Treat evening. This will become an annual ac?vity. Teachers and students are now preparing for the Thanksgiving weekend later this month. Social Emo?onal Learning (SEL) is not a new concept to educators or parents, however we are placing great emphasis on SEL ac?vi?es at school. Essen?ally, SEL aGempts to teach to the whole child. At E.B., we are known for very a strong academic program, however this needs to be expanded and balanced to meet the needs of the whole child. The emo?onal needs of learning responsibility, empathy, staying with a task even if it seems
difficult, etc. We have started to use an SEL program known as Second Steps in all grade levels. Please take some ?me at home to ask your child about the Second Steps lessons. Our school staff wishes to share with parents the value of social emo?onal learning-‐ how it can help your child at school and at home, and what parents can do at home to support school level SEL ac?vi?es. With this in mind, we will convene a Social Emo?onal Learning Parent Night on Thursday, 11/30/17 from 5:00 – 6:00 in our school cafeteria. We invite all interested parents and guardians to aGend. Our cafeteria will prepare a chili dinner for each aGendee so that our Moms do not need to cook when they go home. Also, each student who brings his/her parents to the 11/30/17 session will be awarded two Golden
Bee Tickets which they can redeem for incen?ve prizes later this semester. We will have child care available here on campus during the 5:00 – 6:00 session so that parents can focus on the SEL presenta?on. We hope to see a large turnout for this very important learning session. Please contact our school staff or myself whenever we can be of service to your family. Our school phone no. is (808) 974-‐4855. You may also contact me at my residence no. Ahhh....fall is in the air! The month of pumpkin pie, family gatherings, pumpkin pie, turkey, and pumpkin pie! (My favorite!)
It is also time for us to give thanks for the many blessings that we have in our lives. Family, friends, and our school community all enrich our lives, offer challenges for personal growth and grow wonderful relationships.
Here at EB deSilva, we have so much that has been bestowed on us: from staff and faculty that work extra hard to ensure the success of our students, to the many parents and volunteers that bring an extra layer of value and caring to our school community.
We have had a busy October, with more to come before the winter break. Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

“Veterans Day: Nov. 11”“Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation.
