The police were very impressed with the way competitors coped with, and accomplished the tough challenges. (More on this from our competitors). Last Friday was a real highlight on the calendar as over half of our school headed off to the Mitre 10 Tough Kids challenge at Cooks Gardens. By all accounts they had a MEGA time battling through the obstacles and zooming down water slides. And the consensus was “We can’t wait to do it all again next year!!” Today, senior students competed in the Super 6 Touch Rugby competition with the competitive team having some close games, but finally finishing in 6th place, and the non-competitive team doing well to finish in 3rd place. So well done everyone on a gallant effort. Our integrated topic for this term is “Food for Thought” which provides students with learning experi- ences and activities to develop their understanding about making healthy nutritional choices. They are learn- ing about the food pyramid as a guide to healthy eating, how to read food labels and determine the nutri- tional value of everyday grocery items, the nutrients different foods provide for our bodies, and the influence the media has on our food choices. Students enjoyed learning about nutrition with the educator from the Life Education van, and of course it’s always a treat to see Harold. Next week, we have a nutritionist visiting who will spend time with each class supporting our learning about food and nutrition. This will then be followed by a trip to Pak ’n Save supermarket with the nutritionist, where each class will carry out a range of activities, be presented with a lunchbox each, and then spend $60 selecting foods to make a healthy class lunch. Most classes are also visiting the Resource Recovery Centre (Recycling Depot) to find out what happens to our recycled waste and the benefits of this. This ties in well with our Enviro focus on reducing the waste we create from our lunchboxes. A notice went home regarding this trip but as yet we are well short of the transport and parent support needed for the trip to happen. who will go on and compete in the inter-school athletics at Cooks Gardens. So, as you can see, it’s all ‘go’ at Kai Iwi School and somewhere in between all that we are trying to carry out testing to be able to write National Standards reports and portfolios. PHEW!! Well, it’s time to close and leave room for all the other newsletter items. Have a great weekend. Cheers, Trish Wakeling

Swimming Pool –MORE HELP

I am still looking for someone who can help

look after the pool with regular visits over the

holidays. If you can help, please see me.

Tough Kids Challenge

Well done to the children who participated at

the Tough Kids challenge. I have heard won-

derful feedback about your attitude, showing

true Kai Iwi Resilience, supporting each other

and being respectful. I haven’t heard any

feedback about how our parents and teachers

went this year?

Working Bee; A fridge reminder.

Remember our working bee on the 14th. This

will mostly be to get the pool up and running

(so angle grinders would be helpful), upgrade

the netting on the pool fence, and a few jobs

around the school to clean out a shed and

tidy up a few gardens. I am hoping we can

also use this opportunity to have a BBQ and

maybe a family game of softball or cricket.

Ornamental Flaxes needed.

As we continue to develop gardens and areas

around the school, we are looking for orna-

mental flaxes. These are the type that don’t

grow over 75cm or so. If you have any that

you would be willing to donate to the school

to help with beautification projects, please

contact Wendy in the office. Ideally I would

like to be able to do this at the working bee.

GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD

The end of the year is approaching way too fast

and the amount of things still on the “to do” list is

quite scary with charter writing, strategic and

annual plans, budgets, annual and variance reports,

staff appraisals, not to mention all of the normal

teaching, learning and administrating that our staff

wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to day in and

day out.

One of the more pleasant and exciting jobs is that

the board has been working on is a grounds plan

to make our school grounds more fun, stimulating

and attractive. The activities we are hoping to put

in include new swing sets, a volley wall, an out-

door chess set, a wendy house and a new barked

area with wood, ropes and old cable reels that will

become a building and construction zone.

Along with our upcoming repaint we hope to be

able to put a new solid wooden arch and metal

logo at the entrance between the carpark and the

office. As well as more outdoor seating and plant-

ing that will provide more shade areas and beautify

our school.

As a board we have made a conscious decision to

channel funds into things that will make the biggest

difference to our students learning. Unfortunately

this means that all of the above is a longer-term

plan than we might have liked as much of it will be

done with volunteer time and donated materials.

So if you have any spare time, resources or ideas

that you may think could be useful please don’t

hesitate to talk to Stephen or myself.

We are very fortunate to have such great commu-

nity support at Kai Iwi and I would like to extend a

very big thank you to our wonderful F.O.K.I.S.

group who put in so many hours of work. And,

not only do an amazing job of fund raising for our

pool repairs but have done it in such a way as to

enable the school community to enjoy the process

so much.

The Bluelight PCT Challenge By Halsten and Antonio

Our eyes snapped open, hammered open by the looming thought of the race. But not just any race, a gruelling challenge known only to the best: the PCT challenge! We were drowned in a sea of silence as we gasped at the shocking sight of the dar-ing obstacles. Antonio’s mum assured us that we’d be alright, but our minds told us that she was wrong. Even now we can remember the awful feelings that went through our minds as we memorised the ambitious course. First came a short trailer push, loaded with a super heavy tyre. Then it was a 200m dash to a daunting balancing act. A one metre jump lay ahead, but that was nothing compared to the fence jump! Then came the switch back of cones, followed by the slip and slide (mind your head!) But an even more fearful wall lay ahead - an 8metre steel screen with hardly any noticeable grips. And after scaling that we were faced with hauling a 65kg body bag - a struggle for ten kids, let alone four! Exhausted, but pumped we hauled ourselves over to the MONSTER - a two and a half metre climb. With hearts racing we frantically scrambled over it and happily found the finish line, where we lay ex-hausted, with dead legs and exploding brains. Antonio’s mum’s shining smile soon lit up our heavy hearts. And with that, it was over. We were thrilled to represent Kai Iwi school in the PCT challenge, and we didn’t do too badly either as we actually finished fourth against twelve other teams - not too shabby for a small country school, eh?

Wanganui Bluelight PCT Challenge By Ana and Phoebe

We stumbled through the barrier-like doors ready to take on the PCT challenge, but our jaws plummeted to the ground as our golf ball eyes scanned the gigantic obstacles that stood there before us. “Kai Iwi, are you here?” Yogi asked, over the loud speakers. “Yes!” we screamed. Ryan Daniels came face to face with the dull-coloured trailer, ready to show all of us the course. “Ready, set, GO!” repeatedly echoed throughout the whole stadium, leaving our ears ringing until it was our turn. We sprang from our icy seats. As we stum-bled down the steep stairway, there glued to the nicely polished floor was a gleaming white start line that shone to the very core of our eyeballs. There wasn’t a second to waste and this was our time to shine. We launched ourselves around the 200me-tre course. The blur of the obstacles soon be-came clear as we bounced onto the metallic bal-ancing beam, lead by Antonio, then Ana, Halsten, and Phoebe. We whizzed through the course and there towering above us was the mighty window. We swung our legs over the edge trying not to smack our heads, then prepared ourselves for the titanic wall ahead. We attempted to hoist our-selves up, but FAILED!! Our second attempt was successful, but without help we wouldn’t have managed. Like demons possessed, we took hold of some handles with our sweaty hands and dragged the 65kg body along to the cone, then rubbed our hands together and grabbed the wire which flicked us over the million mile high wall. Our jel-lified legs carried us to the finish...just. Yay, we had done it. Our grins grew from ear to ear.
