GIS 4 Schools is developing new easy to use lessons that harness the power of ArcGIS Online. The first two lessons are
listed below. Both lessons match Minnesota Social Studies standards. Future lessons are listed as well.

Lesson 1: Web Mapping Using ArcGIS Online - An Intro to ArcGIS Online
Lesson 2: Analyzing Census Data Using USA Demographics for Schools (works on smart phones)
Lesson 3a: Introduction to ArcGIS Online - Saving maps to "My Contents“ folder

AGO Lessons
Students learn how to navigate ArcGIS through a series of activities. Students are introduced to ArcGIS mapping and learn how to plot points and measure distances. Students apply their learning to wildfires in California. The city of New York Mills is the example used in this lesson, but any city can be used. This lesson is an introduction to ArcGIS as a geospatial technology tool and can be applied to the investigation of a variety of topics and areas of the world. The lesson has three files:

Lesson Overview - Provides an overview of the lesson, list of standards, Objectives and Materials needed. Introductory PowerPoint Show - Provides an introduction to GIS and a overview of the Exercises included in the lesson. Lesson Handout - "Web Mapping Using ArcGIS Online" handout that you pass out to your students. Shortened Handout

Application of ArcGIS: Web Mapping Using USA Demographics for Schools
Overview: Students will learn how to navigate USA Demographics for Schools. Students will apply their learning to develop a demographic profile of their community. The city of Hibbing is the example used in this lesson, but any city may be used. The tool can be applied to the investigation of a variety of topics and areas of the world.

Objectives: Students will be able to: Navigate ArcGIS as a geospatial technology tool including: zooming in/out, finding places, changing base maps, and exploring layers, investigate demographic data Compare demographic data for two communities and develop a demographic profile of your community

Lesson 3a: An Introduction to ArcGIS Online
Overview: Students will learn how to navigate ArcGIS as a geospatial technology tool through a series of exercises. Students will be introduced to ArcGIS mapping and how to plot points, measure distances, and navigate layers. Students will also apply their learning how to add maps to their ArcGIS My Content folder. The city of Princeton is the example in this lesson, but any city may be used. This lesson can be applied to the investigation of a variety of topics and areas of the world. Teachers can sign up for a AricGIS organization account or students can sign up for their own ESRI ArcGIS Online FREE public user account.
Lesson 3a has four files:

Overview PowerPoint Show - Provides an introduction to GIS and a overview of the exercises included in the lesson

Overview: Students will explore census data by learning how to navigate USA Demographics for Schools, which can be used with iPads or the computer. Students will apply their learning to develop a demographic profile of their community. The example used in this lesson is Princeton, but any city may be used. This lesson is an introduction to a web mapping application using ArcGIS Online as a geospatial technology tool. This tool can be applied to the investigation of a variety of topics and areas of the world. Students should be familiar with navigating ArcGIS or have had the lesson, “An Introduction to ArcGIS”. Students are encouraged to have an ESRI ArcGIS Online user account. Maps can then be saved in users “My Contents” folder and shared with others.

The tools can be applied to the investigation of a variety of topics and areas of the world. Students should be familiar with navigating ArcGIS Online and are encouraged to have an ESRI ArcGIS Online user account. Maps can then be saved in users “My Contents” folder and can be shared with others. .

Step 2: Zoom in and Click on a State
1. Legend box displays USA Pop Density data
summarized by the State boundary file.
2. Click on a state and a
summary of that state’s
Pop Density appears.
3. Click on other states to compare their Pop
Density with Minnesota’s data.

3. Data is displayed by Block Groups but it is hard to identify areas of the city. Street names would help.
Step 6: Zoom in on Princeton (Block Groups)
1. At this level USA Pop Density data is summarized by the
Census Block Groups boundary file.
4. Seeing streets would aid in locating features.
2. This is the closest you can view the map. Click on a portion of the city..

Step 15: Select Another Data Map
1. Uncheck USA Pop Density box. This closes the map so another map can be drawn.
2. Check USA Diversity Index. The new Map draws.
3. Repeat the save as process. Name this map: USA Diversity Index.
