I downloaded an image of the sailboat from the internet and used it as a pattern to cut out the appliqué, and I arranged the strips from a jelly roll in a color combination that I thought made sense for sky and sea. I cut a portion of the jelly roll strips after they had been sewn together to use on the back.

The rick rack is just sewn between the fabric strips and it's kind of "floppy".
